The Flight of the Eagle
Chapter one:
Callum Lynch gazed out the window as his father gripped the steering wheel beside him.
“Callum.” His father said quietly for the fourth time.
“What.” Callum muttered, watching the trees blur past his window.
“You can’t get kicked out of this school, Cal. I spent a lot of money on moving us here. It’s our last chance.” Callum ignored the man, keeping his gaze firmly on the outside of the car.
“Should’ve saved your money then, old man.” He finally spat. “I’m not going to some rich-kid’s playground in the middle of the fucking year.”
His father sighed, but said nothing else, and Callum pushed down the small twinge of guilt.
After three days of non-stop driving, the Lynch men peaked a hill and saw a green sign welcoming them to the town of Eden.
There was no population sign, which Callum found odd, but figured it had blown off in a storm or something.
“Just… know that I love you, Cal. And your mother would be glad you accepted this chance.” His father finally said as they pulled into the driveway of their new house.
Callum said nothing as he stepped out of the car, but clenched his fists at the mention of his mother. He took a deep breath and decided to leave the old man to the unpacking while he explored the house.
It was a single story, brick house with a wrap-around patio and a single-car garage. Callum unlocked the storm screen, then the inner door. He stepped into the house and looked around.
He was in a living room, with a hallway that led straight through the house to another door that Callum assumed was to the backyard. On the left was the kitchen and pantry, and on the right was an open room and another hallway with three closed doors.
He opened each door softly, and discovered two bedrooms and a bathroom, all fully furnished. The smaller of the two bedrooms Callum stepped fully into and shut the door behind himself.
He sat at the white desk in the corner of the room, gazing at the empty bookshelves behind him. The bed looked soft, much better than sleeping in a car. Callum approached it cautiously before sitting on it.
It was better than it looked, very cozy. Callum could feel his eyes slipping shut and decided to take a quick nap before helping his father unpack.
Callum rode his bike through the dust, sending up large plumes to mark his way. He wanted to make The Jump.
He gripped his handlebars and peddled furiously, keeping his gaze on the ramp. An eagle cried overhead and Callum grinned in joy as his bike went up the ramp.
Only to have his front wheel hit the shipping container in front of him and fall back onto the dusty mattresses below, pining his leg and sending pain shooting up to his brain.
Callum blinked back tears as he rode home. When he entered his house, the radio was on. Mom sat at the table, but didn’t turn to look and smile at him as she usually did.
“Mom…?” As Callum walked closer, he noticed a dark stain on her clothes.
He didn’t understand.
“Cal.” The hooded man rasped. “They’re coming. Get in the car.”
Callum looked at his father in shock. “What-?”
“Get in the car.”
His father’s voice gave no room for argument or question, so Callum stowed his bike in the trunk of the car and hopped into his seat.
His mother was dead. His father fled from some shadow chasing them. Callum grew up constantly on the move—the only “home” he knew.
Callum woke with a gasp, seeing his mother’s empty face and hearing the radio drone on and on.
“Fuck…” he rubbed his hands over his eyes. He glanced at the window, noting the sky was much darker then it had been when he had fallen asleep.
His father had placed two boxes labeled “Cal” in his room. One held his clothes and the other held his books and laptop, along with other stuff from his old house he managed to fit into it.
Callum stood up and stretched before opening both boxes. Sorting through them, he put his clothing into the closet and his books on the shelves. His final item, his laptop, he placed on the center of the white desk.
Plugging it into the wall, Callum’s fingers flew across his login and he pulled up ShoudSearch, the world’s number one search engine.
An ad popped up on the corner of his screen and Callum paused. The emblem was an eagle behind a sword shaped like a cross over a light grey background. The text read: Hidden in the shadows or reveling in your power? Log into The Grey now!
He clicked the ad out of curiosity and scanned over the website. The Grey seemed to be a MMORPG-type game, with focus in parkour and two different play styles depending on which faction you chose.
Two factions—the Hidden Ones, marked by an eagle, and the Order of the Ancients, marked by a red sword—would race to find artifacts hidden across a very large map that almost exactly replicated Earth in various places throughout history. There was a starting town named Eden that had a multitude of shops and faction-specific buildings.
Callum hummed a song under his breath as he clicked ‘Create Account’.
Username, password, date of birth, would you like to receive email updates from Isu Corporations?
CallumLeech, ***********, Oct 21 2004, sure why not.
The screen loaded and Callum grinned as his account information was accepted.
“Hell yeah.” He whispered.
Messages began to pop up as his character loaded into the starting town of Eden.
General chat
Knight Rikkin: Let’s focus on finding the Second Apple of Eden.
Knight Cormac: I thought Dorian had that one?
Knight Rikkin: no. Dorian has the First.

Chaotic Eagle: LMAO we’re gonna wreck your shit tomorrow !
Knight Rikkin: @Knight Cormac into Ancient Chat please
Knight Cormac: yes ma’am!
Callum chuckled as the two ‘knights’ logged off the general chat. He thought for a moment before typing.
CallumLeech: hello!! I’ll be honest I don’t really know what’s going on lol
Nerdy Eagle: this is The Grey. A MMORPG where we run around and collect artifacts and claim land for our side so we can fight to protect freedom or try to control the world.
Nerdy Eagle: depending on which side you’re on, you get bonuses and special gear. You can be on the side of the Hidden Ones, whose names are denoted by the ‘Eagle’ somewhere in them. Or the Order of the Ancients, whose usernames are ‘Knight (last name)’.
CallumLeech: neat! How do you choose a faction?
Nerdy Eagle: go to the faction’s base in Eden and sign up with the NPC at the door! Press ‘M’ for the map if you need it.
CallumLeech: thanks!
NerdyEagle: no prob mate! Ping me if you need more help!
Callum tapped the M button on his map. The map expanded to fit his screen and he looked around.
The city of Eden was walled, with four entry/exit points coordinating to each cardinal direction. It, likewise, was divided into four sections, with the East side labeled ‘Order of the Ancients’ and the West side labeled ‘Hidden Ones’. The north sections of each side seemed to be more ancient-styled, while the south sides were very modern-looking. Two green dots on each side were labeled “sign up”.
Callum guided his character to the north road, stopping when two green arrows showed up on the sides of his screen.
He headed right, towards the Order’s NPC. The NPC was dressed in black robes adorned with large red crosses. Callum pressed ‘E’, his interact button.
“Welcome to the Order of the Ancients! My name is Cain. We of the Ancients believe in the transcendence of humanity via control—that is to say, humans were made to be controlled. It is their nature.”
Callum paused.
“We seek to guide humanity to be their best selves via Pieces of Eden. Such as this,” Cain held a glowing sphere in his hand. “Apple of Eden. It can be used to control other NPCs to bend to our will. Player Characters are not affected by it, unless wielded by another Player Character.”
Callum hovered his mouse over the sphere.
Cain’s Apple of Eden
It pulses with energy.
Useable at Level 100.
Callum sat back in his seat. Level 100? He was only Level 1–how the hell did he get to 100?!
“Callum, dinner!” His father’s call startled Callum and he looked back at his door.
“Coming! Give me a minute!” Callum yelled back, turning his attention back to the game in front of him.
“So, what do you say? Want to become a member of the Order?” The NPC asked.
Callum’s mouse hovered over the yes .
Welcome back, The Eagle System!
The Eagle System: @CallumLeech wait.
The Eagle System: I have a proposal for you.
Callum’s brows scrunched in confusion.
CallumLeech: what?
The Eagle System: friend me.
The Eagle System has sent a friend request!
CallumLeech has accepted the friend request!
The Eagle System [Private]: don’t click anything. There’s something you should know about this game.
The Eagle System [Private]: you can call me Aita.
The Eagle System [Private]: I can’t say too much, but. If you accept, your life will be affected as well. In good and very bad ways.
The Eagle System [Private]: Which school are you going to.
CallumLeech [Private]: Abstergo High I think?
The Eagle System [Private]: Ah ok. Our older brother goes to Creed High. Just- be on the lookout. Go to school first before you pick a faction. And if you want a traveling companion, we’re always on from 4 pm to around 8 pm.
CallumLeech [Private]: I don’t get it. Why are you telling me to wait?
The Eagle System [Private]: you’ll see soon enough. Also you’re not forced to choose a faction until level 20, I think. So you’ve got time.
The Eagle System [Private]: meet me at the North gate, I can show you some easy missions you can complete for coin and XP.
CallumLeech [Private]: okay.
Callum moved his character to the North, and almost swore he saw a frown cross Cain’s face.
