Depressing day consisting of the looming death of little birds, and a general gloom over the past. As much as I shake my head it won’t clear. So I’m adding tracks to my funeral playlist instead - don’t get me wrong, I’m not suicidal, I’ve just been to too many funerals where no one has a clue what to play so that I’m planning well in advance. It’s a work of many years. Still, it is a gloomy business.

Hi there, I’m Soo. If you're reading this, most likely, someone you love has passed away, and I just want to start by saying how deeply sorry I am for your loss. I've yet to know you, but my heart goes out to you and your family. Professional singers are allowed at funerals - your questions about singers and musicians answered

There has been a lot of confusion in the funeral industry about the rules surrounding live singing and instruments throughout the pandemic. Here is our summary of what you need to know as a funeral professional, as of 19th July 2021.

Are singers allowed?

Yes. The new guidance from 19th July 2021 does not restrict live music performances in any way. 

Can the congregation sing?

Yes.

How have live music restrictions changed over the course of the pandemic?

The guidance was clarified on 23rd October 2020, as previous guidelines did not distinguish between congregational singing and singing by professionals. This caused confusion as to whether any singing was allowed. The new guidance cleared up this problem, specifically allowing professional singers. The number was restricted to one singer during the January 2021 lockdown, was extended to allow “a small group” for indoor services in April, and now all restrictions have been lifted. 

Do venues still need to implement social distancing?

No. The government recognises that some venues may still wish to limit the number of attendees depending on the space and ventilation available, but there is no legal requirement to implement social distancing. 

Is singing safe?

Research published in October has shown that the risk of spread from performance comes not from singing itself, but from the accumulation of aerosol droplets in the air, which also happens when people speak. There was little difference in aerosol production between speaking and singing, but speaking or singing very loudly can increase the number of droplets released.

So singing is no different to speaking?

To us, the research suggests that a professional performer giving a one-off performance would pose no larger risk than a person speaking. Lots of non-professional people singing regularly in the same space (such as church congregations) may cause an accumulation of droplets, especially if ventilation is low and the volume is loud, so that is still discouraged.

Our professional singers are trained to control their breathing tightly (it’s one of the things we look for in auditions), and can reduce the volume of their performance to further decrease the production of aerosol droplets.

Are professional wind instrumentalists allowed? 

Yes. The playing of wind instruments was initially discouraged, but following the new research there are now no specific restrictions on wind or any other instruments.

Funeral music is so varied nowadays. Virtually anything goes. I remember when a few years ago people would shudder at the thought of hearing ‘ring of fire’ by Johnny Cash at a crematorium. Or ‘Highway to Hell’ being played entering a church. But now songs like these are embraced to a certain extent and are more acceptable. Music plays such an important part in most of our lives.
