The Ladder Hill Railway: A cable railway in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean
On the extraordinarily remote island of St. Helena, located about 2000 km away from the coast of Africa and 4000 km away from the coast of South America you can not just find traces of Napoleon’s imprisonment, but also the remainder of what was once one of the most remote railways in the world. In fact, it was one of the first funiculars of the world, being constructed as early as 1828-1829.
The 1875 book “St. Helena: A Physical, Historical and Topographical Description of the Island, including the Geology, Fauna, Flora and Metereology” by John Meliss explains its original primary purpose: to ship manure and guano (bird dung) up to Ladder Hill to use as fertilizer on the farms there. Plans for passenger transport were considered but rejected after some time as being too dangerous, instead a stairway with 700 steps was installed.
The Mechanics Magazine, an early 19th century crowdfunded British popular science magazine, had two articles about the function of this cable railway in two issues in February 1832 and March 1834, and the technical drawings above are from these issues.
The railway was in fact composed of two railways, so that one cart would always be ascending and one always be descending the 924 feet (almost 282 m) long railway at unusually steep angles ranging from 39 to 41° to climb the 600 feet (about 183 m) high hill, at least as long as the chains tied to the carts were not breaking, which however was a common problem at the time.
To prevent the carts from dashing down the hill at dangerous speeds in such cases, a sophisticated mechanical braking system was later suggested in the March 1834 article that was meant to automatically trigger and turn the axles around so that the wheels would be removed from the ground and instead point towards the sky (see the third illustration).
The chains in turns were fixated to a revolving cylinder, a capstan, which was powered by three mules, or alternatively donkeys.
The railway was in use until 1871 at the latest, at which point it was destructed as white ants had damaged much of its wooden part.  As a result, only the stairway in the middle, known as Jacob’s Ladder and in modern times only consisting of 699 steps, remained. It is still an important link of the capital of Jamestown with its suburb Half Tree Hollow that is nowadays located on the hill. It is also used for sports competitions, with the record time for climbing the stairway being at 5 minutes and slightly below 17 seconds.
