The coffee machine whined before seeping inky, dark liquid, filling the glass carafe below. Gaz massaged the back of his neck, his head tilted back in a lazy stance of impatience.
Boy, he thought,ย am I in for a day.
The breakroom had been relatively quiet aside from the sputtering of the coffee machine. It should have been easy for Gaz to hear the door open behind him, followed by heavy boots and a voice.
Alas, he didnโ€™t.
โ€œGarrick!โ€
Gaz jolted as a hand clapped against his back. An arm decorated with greys and blacks hung around his shoulders. He followed the designs until they disappeared behind him. He turned his head, tracing the bared fangs of a colorful, Japanese-styled cobra before meeting the eyes that studied him.
โ€œHuh?โ€
โ€œIย saidโ€ฆโ€˜good morningโ€™ and โ€˜how are you,'โ€ Alex grinned, the corners of his eyes deepening with humor. โ€œWell?โ€
โ€œMโ€™good,โ€ Gaz mumbled, scratching his chin. He scoffed out a laugh and shook his head. โ€œSorry, mate. Itโ€™s been aย longย morning.โ€
โ€œYeah? No kidding.โ€ Alex quietly laughed, nodding his head down at the brewing coffee. His arm remained around Gaz for a moment as he looked back over.
โ€œGotta be careful with caffeine,โ€ he continued as if he spoke from experience. The daylight coming from a nearby window caught the blues of his eyes. Gaz noticed, upper lip twitching with a smirk.
Gaz nodded. He relaxed under the warmth of Alexโ€™s arm. The touch quelled the tension in his back. His eyes settled on the pot before him, and his foot began to tap. โ€œIโ€™ll be careful."
Heย wasย careful, but he was more than ready for that coffee.ย That kickstart it would offer after a few sips. That internal hug from a mugโ€ฆ
Alexโ€™s arm slid away, his hand rubbing the muscles of the Sergeantโ€™s back tenderly. Gaz didnโ€™t even catch the words the man spoke, too lost in his thoughts about his cuppa when-
The tips of Alexโ€™s fingers were noticeably colder as they brushed over the collar of his shirt, igniting his skin. The sensitivity of his neck was exposed the second Gaz sucked in a sharp breath, body flinching before he stiffened again.
Alex watched, head tilting as his eyebrows raised in amusement.
โ€œOn edge, are we?โ€ the man quipped, lips pulling into a slow smile. Gaz ignored the heat crawling up his neck and to his cheeks. His head swung back in forth as he took a pointed step forward.
โ€œLike I said, Keller,โ€ he huffed. โ€œLong morning.โ€
Gaz pressed against the counter, biting the inside of his cheek as his hands fumbled with the stack of disposable cups. All thoughts had muddled into one: the ghost of Alexโ€™s touch lingering on his skin.
Alex opened his mouth to speak, stopping promptly as the door swung open with a swarm of words. It had been John, talking absentmindedly with the Lieutenant on his heels. Alexโ€™s head snapped to the two, while Gaz kept a tense back against the noise.
โ€œAh, just the blokes I need. Kyle. Alex. My office, will you?โ€ John spoke quickly as he flitted from the fridge and back to the door, a bottle of water in his hand. Ghost trailed him like a shadow, something of a file in hand that caught the Captainโ€™s attention once again.
โ€œSure thing, sir,โ€ Alex returned with a short nod, his body facing the door as John and Ghost exited. He took a glance over his shoulder, pursing his lips.
Gaz kept his head lowered, methodically ripping open a third packet of sugar and pouring it into the cup. He paid too much attention to the way it dissolved in the steaming pool of java.
What the fuck was that, Kyle?
Alex reached out, patting the Sergeantโ€™s left shoulder as if to either say โ€˜see you laterโ€™ or โ€˜I know, itโ€™s okayโ€™. The thought of both made Gaz close his eyes, bottom lip tucked between his teeth.
โ€œCanโ€™t keep the Captain waiting,โ€ Alex called over his shoulder as he walked out, the door closing painfully slow behind him. Gaz didnโ€™t move until he heard theย โ€˜clickโ€™. He deflated immediately, dispelling a breath he didnโ€™t know he was holding.
โ€œBloodyโ€ฆChrist,โ€ he growled, slamming a hand on the counter. Gaz snapped a lid over his cup before taking it in a tight hold, ignoring the subtle tent that had set up camp between his thighs.

Wake up, Iโ€™ve been brainrotting over the civvie au (with healthy enablement from @alexgalaxyboo) and Iโ€™m here to share some thoughts.
Hereโ€™s some of the groundwork and some who will be here and how they get introduced:
Price, late-thirties, decides heโ€™s tired of the city and wants to move into a quieter neighborhood. He can work remotely and doesnโ€™t have any real ties or reasons to stay in the city so he doesnโ€™t.
The house he purchases is a shabby thing at the corner of the street. His neighbors are the Laswells, Kate the American and her British wife, along with Kateโ€™s nephew, Alex Keller.
Their houses are a little closer than standardly comfortable. But there is a large oak tree between them (remember that, itโ€™s vitally important later on) that shadows and gives them a bit of privacy.
The neighborhood is friendly enough with each other, but theyโ€™re not like a community. Which suits Price fine because he isnโ€™t there to make friends; he just wants some quiet. But the Laswells see this man move in next door, alone, and adopt him. They check up on him regularly, invite him over for tea, and bake and cook for him occasionally.
And itโ€™s good for several years, this little life. But Price didnโ€™t account for the loneliness he would start to feel. So, because of the heart he has and the fact he always wanted to be a father, he signs up to foster kids.
Soap and Gaz, who are about 10 and 9 respectively, are two halves of a pair. (Iโ€™m not sure yet why theyโ€™re in the foster care system but thatโ€™s where they are.) The system has tried to separate them, but Soap is crazy and does all kinds of wild shit any time Gaz is taken away from him, like setting things on fire or running away.
Chaos Incarnate and his Accomplice get assigned to Price, who is nervous at first because of what heโ€™s heard, but this man (in every universe itโ€™s a Constant) can and will adopt and wrangle these boys with his firm father hand and his depthless love.
The fact that Alex Keller, who is Soapโ€™s age, lives next door has nothing to do with why Soap behaves. Itโ€™s totally not because Gaz has a crush on the American boy and asks Soap to behave so they can stay. (Iโ€™m lying to you.)
But itโ€™s not just that. Soap and Gaz fit in really well with Price. They like him, he likes them. They make a good family. So, after having them for a time, he starts the process of legal adoption. Theyโ€™re about 12 and 11 when they legally becomes Priceโ€™s sons.
Some months later, the Riley family moves into the neighborhood, bringing with them another boy their age. Simon is about 13 and is immediately welcomed into their merry little band of preteens. Which he joins, because he takes any opportunity to be away from his father.
Time passes. The boys are getting bigger and stronger. They play rough, and sometimes do it inside despite Priceโ€™s insistent that they donโ€™t. Soap accidentally puts his shoulder through the wall while trying to evade capture. Insert Nik, the big Russian carpenter/repairman who Soap and Gaz immediately decide will be their second dad.
