Time and time again, people have tried to discredit Alphys' work in the Determination Experiments by crediting at least some of the True Lab entries to Gaster. A recent theory making the rounds has once again misled people into taking this as fact, and in this video, I take a critical look at the entries to prove that Alphys wrote all of them as well as debunking several of the arguments used to claim that Gaster was involved. Sources include both Undertale and Deltarune, the Undertale Gaster twitter takeovers, the Legends of Localization book, and the recent Valentines newsletter. My goal in this video is to put this argument to rest, as it relies on many cherrypicked pieces of information that really don't hold up under scrutiny and are a disservice to Alphys and Gaster both.

i was kind of wondering something just today im. not sure if its a coincidence or something

allegedly- chara’s symbolic number is usually 9, to my knowledge.

which yeah stands for completion the end of a cycle because- player allegory thing

but then gaster’s so called symbolic number is 6, to my knowledge

IF im correct his datamined stats were all in sixes(sorry the picture is blurry i cant. find good pictures)

also intentional or not his name has six letters

and that if you set your fun value to 66 there’s a ten percent chance of getting the mystery man room(and he’s commonly assumed to be gaster)

there’s those- some stuff i found might be misinformation but I can’t be too sure- do tell if i get anything wrong

and then take it another step and there’s the fact that gaster’s number and chara’s number- if you take either number and flip them upside down they look the same- in certain fonts. like if you took 6 and flipped that upside down, you’d get 9. its easier to see in that tumblr default font.

if i’m not wrong, this applies to the aster font as well. and the undertale font

and another small but probably insignificant similarity that they both smile?? and they can have those. creepy black eye things

i think the tl dr of all that is that chara and gaster’s symbolic numbers parallel each other in some kind of way, and with how sometimes they’re depicted being in the afterlife(????) together i just- wondered if it was something intentional or not. or if that small fact means anything.

noelle mentions how no one but kris knows how weird she is and how everyone knows kris is and the word "weird" also has connotations with the game itself being somehow not in its correct state (think weird route)

in this essay, i will discuss how noelle's comment is a reference to how kris's connection to something irregular (the player) is way more obvious than hers is but that there's so much more going on with her than in kris's case,

ULTIMATE (not really) GASTER CONNECTIONS LIST THING

Finally, I wrote down everything that came to my mind, most of them were theories. So if I missed something, please let me know. Plus, I'll probably update this when I find something new.

Devil connections:

- His stats are with numbers 666

- He fell (into his creation)

- his font has the word Wing in its name

-the first version of deltarune was 0.666

-religious connections of characters in Deltarune

- Possibility that he is an Angel

Following this lead, Mettaton should not be a Core Boss -> there is no connection. This is Gaster's place

- Gaster blaster resembles a dragon's skull and the "beams" could easily be snow, similar to the snow grave spell

- "knight knight" who has a strange reoccurring motifs of day, nights, and dreams. Her sprite is labeled as a dragon

-susie's axe, which is said to be made of a dragon's mane. Implying that susie herself is a dragon

it is a rather small picture, so i figured i'd hold off on posting it until i managed to compile a couple more self insert illustrations to go along with it. oh well

Just so we’re all on the same page here-- 

Toby Fox has been having Fun With Anagrams and name puns since Undertale. Asgore Dreemurr can be arranged to ‘Sage or Murderer.’ Asriel Dreemurr doesn’t just reference the Angel of Death Azrael, but can be rearranged to ‘Serial Murderer’. ‘Toriel’ is a pun on ‘tutorial’. ‘Undyne’ is a pun on ‘Undine,’ Ralsei’s whole name, etc etc. People know about this. 

-In Undertale, Gaster was a genius, and Alphys was selected by Asgore to replace him. In Deltarune, Gerson was a well-loved teacher and author, and now Toriel has recommended Alphys to fill his role. 

-There was an Undertale-themed Tarot deck designed by @/dogbomber. Initially, the Hermit card was represented by Gaster. However, when Toby and Fangamer agreed to let the Tarot deck be printed as official merch, Gaster was replaced by Gerson in the Hermit card. 

-It has been pointed out by @rvenen0791 that ‘Goners’ is an anagram for ‘Gerson.’ 

-'Goner’ seems to have strong ties to both Gaster and Deltarune. Deltarune is hinted at by the Goner Clam and begins with a Goner Survey, which it’s strongly implied Gaster is narrating. 

-Gaster’s most famous line is Entry No. 17. Some have theorized that Gaster was actually describing the creation of a Dark World during it. Near the end of Chapter 2, a connection between Gerson and Dark Worlds is tentatively created. 

-Gerson is the only character to tell us some lesser-known lore about the Underground, including the Angel’s Prophecy, the meaning of the Delta Rune, and how Boss Monsters age. 

-Not only Angel and the Deltarune significant in Deltarune, but Toriel and Asgore may not outlive their human child this time around, because Asriel’s still alive too... (Assuming boss monsters still age like in Undertale.)

-Someone tried pointing out similarities between Gaster Blasters and turtle skulls once. I thought it was a bit of a stretch at the time, but now... 

-What does it all mean? I don’t know! But it’s something!

Mystery of the Eyes

AKA What's up with this reoccurring image, of two eyes, one yellow and one pink?

This face appears as an easter egg in the background of the Basement during the Spamton sidequest - notice it in the dark, in the lower left corner, before the teacup elevator activates.

A similar image reappears in the Spamton Sweepstakes, in this page. If the chair image is saved, or occasionally clicked too many times, the second image of 'Eyes' is seen - similar but different to the first image.

An interesting, but not too important detail, is that the tab header for these 'Eyes' asks: "What if it could get... Darker than Dark?"

It's possible that these images are in reference to Spamton...

But it doesn't seem likely.

This type of 'projection' isn't an ability Spamton has - if he could 'project' his eyes and follow Kris like that, Kris wouldn't need to get the Empty Disk from the basement, which Spamton uses to accompany Kris. This image appears to activate the Teacups, before Kris ever gets the Disk.

There aren't a lot of other characters that could fit the bill for this 'Pink & Yellow Eyes Face'.

Especially because this 'face' seems to be present in all sorts of ways - it was included in cut content.

And this face probably has some connection to Gaster and the introduction - the asset name for the image is 'DEVICE_FRIEND' - fitting the naming scheme for the introduction assets.

Y'know, this place:

Where we create a vessel,

Which gets interrupted by...

This voice.

It's been theorized before that this voice is 'Chara', due to similar ways of speaking, though this theory runs into the bigger question of 'What's Chara doing in Deltarune?', which runs into all sorts of issues.

More likely is that this 'voice' is its own character withing this world - an interrupting force in Deltarune's status quo - someone we haven't met yet -

We are left with a huge mystery regarding who or what this voice even is - 'Chara' or Gaster or some other mysterious force. What we DO know is that this force is related to the meta plot of Deltarune - it acts upon the space between 'Us' and the 'Light World'.

There is a high likelihood this force is the same as 'DEVICE_FRIEND' - someone else closely tied to Gaster and the meta plot.

There is another interesting piece of text to analyze regarding this 'voice' - at the end of the Spamton Sweepstakes, on the blurb for 'Spamton's Fate', it says this:

It is HIGHLY likely the speaker for this blurb is the same as the interrupter during the introduction sequence - these two sequences have a number of similarities: a solemn attitude, a malicious undertone, a tendency to philosophize in the middle of speech...

The most obvious detail about the speaker of this blurb is their open envy of Spamton:

"Why should he be so special?", "He wasn't any better than any of us.", "Don't you think it's about time someone else got the spotlight!?"

As if it was a competition, and Spamton's 'Sweepstakes' (& existence) was the sudden reveal at the end - after the Speaker already put in their share amount into 'winning'.

(...Mayhaps the Speaker doesn't enjoy someone with a similar fashion sense getting so much attention...)

And the speaker compares themselves directly to Spamton - "After all, are we really any better...?"

As if the speaker shares some qualities with Spamton... It's not a happy comparison they make.

Here's an interesting tidbit regarding Spamton - he was deliberately erased from public consciousness by Queen.

Ensuring that the average citizen would not encounter or hear about him.

Other interesting detail:

And he was obsessed with a 'machine' for a bit... said machine has roots from places 'more heavenly' than the Dark World.

(What was the purpose of Gaster's Inventions anyways? There's the CORE and the machine he fell into...)

Seems our Mystery Character's encounter with Gaster didn't end up going well...

I think there’s a lot of merit to the Gaster represents Toby Fox theory and here’s why!!!

evidence:

- gaster literally presents deltarune to us as an experiment (via taking “control” of the undertale twitter as well? toby literally speaking as him?)

- gaster was scattered across time and space when he fell into his creation? you could read this as toby as a creator falling into his work, and scattering pieces of himself within it in a figurative sense

- once you’re done listening to gaster’s theme in the sound test room, text pops up reading “"Thanks for your feedback! Be seeing you soon!" ....sound test? collecting feedback? sounds like the developer is speaking through the game to the player, and with the gaster connection.... (it stops after you select his theme)

- riverperson says “beware of the man who came from the other world” - if this is referencing gaster and not another character, could this be referring to the real world?? our world?

- one of gaster’s followers says “it’s rude to talk about someone who’s listening” in reference to gaster... figuratively, a creator has a constant presence in their game?? a slight stretch perhaps

- if we go with the idea that gaster is the one “corrupting” the secret bosses in deltarune, making jevil see the whole world as a game, making spamton see himself as a puppet desperate to be free of his strings? HELLO? they were literally given meta knowledge. JEVIL WAS TOLD HIS WORLD IS A GAME. Spamton knows he’s being controlled by someone else. LIKE A PROGRAMMER. THE STRINGS ARE STRINGS OF CODE--

- obviously gaster has knowledge of the player as we see in deltarune’s opening and on the twitter

- a massive stretch but gaster creating the core could be a reference to toby being responsible for the core idea of undertale

what does this mean?

- i don’t think it’s meant to be taken in a literal sense. i mean, I’m like 49% sure that Toby Fox doesn’t look like this:

- more importantly, gaster has a lot of unique character traits that don’t really let him align as a 1:1 with toby, like... he’s a royal scientist. he speaks in wingdings. plus, we already know the annoying dog is toby’s self insert (imagine annoying dog gets revealed as gaster. I’m deleting my blog)

- BUT I do think the parallels are important! we already know gaster is a very meta character so him being some sort of representation of toby (note I said a representation of him and definitely not a 1:1 self insert) is pretty likely and has some cool implications for what we can expect from deltarune!!

- like the themes of choice and control? you could argue a game developer has total choice and control over their game!! (think of the THEMATIC DISCUSSIONS)

- does this make any sense? just think of the implications okay! PROMISE ME YOU’LL THINK OF THE IMPLICATIONS!

conclusion:

the hour is late and i am bad at explaining things. but undertale has always been a very meta game and i think deltarune is heading in a similar direction with its themes. there’s already so much discussion of choice/free will - characters like jevil and spamton think they have no free will. kris, as the protagonist, should have greater freedom of choice, but they’re under the player’s control. and all the player’s choices have been pre-programmed too! FREE WILL ISN’T REAL! then you factor in the idea of creators having to choose between making a product that’ll satisfy an audience versus making what they want to make? imagine the role gaster could play in a plot thread like that! IMAGINE HOW META IT COULD GET!!! IS THIS MAKING ANY SENSE TO YOU?? I NEED TO GO TO BED.

alright, so if we do end up fighting Kris in the last chapter of Deltarune, we will most certainly win. For we are the player, and we have the power of saving and loading. Debatably, Kris has this too, but either way the end result is the same- This will be a fight of iteration and endurance.

I hypothesize that this fight will have two (or three, depending on how you look at it) endings: You persist, or you relent. Persistence would likely look like a LOT of grinding, figuring out which actions in what order will allow you to "win" and take control back over Kris. And relenting, or perhaps convincing them to relent, would look like A: fleeing or mercy, or B: the same thing as persistence, but choosing to pursue mercy. The third option would be death, and subsequently giving up.

Now, we must remember that Deltarune is a 2018 video game developed by American indie developer Toby Fox. Deltarune originally came from Toby's fever dream portraying the ending of a video game. So there's every chance that rather than having the option to either fight to achieve mercy or simply give up and die, you can only die. That IS the only way to free the game from the player. Any other way, and you'd still be in control.

This option also would align with Toby's "there is only one ending"- The ending is persistence, and taking over Kris again. The other "endings" are just death.

This alone makes me inclined to believe that that's exactly how it's gonna go. The only thing that makes me doubt this is how Deltarune is a commercial venture, and that's a pretty unsatisfying "ending". But I could absolutely see Toby doing it anyway.

For we are the player. And if we fight for it, we WILL win. But winning means making Kris suffer, and the only way to avoid that is to no longer fight.

I have the app! Though I have a modification to the program that will read off your questions to me automatically as soon as I recieve them. My eyes hurt from looking at the screen sometimes so it's easier to just use that most of the time, haha. I sometimes have a bit of trouble typing too, so, um, usually I use speech recognition!
