okay, all right, c'mon, kiddies, gather 'round for a PSA. when ANY author says "MDNI", it goes beyond the realm of "smut". so congratulations, you read the warnings and stayed away from smut, but my writing is not suitable for any minor. the subject matter i cover is NOT suitable for minors.

how many times do i have to say this? this is not the first time i've had this discussion. so, like, congrats, you just outed yourself, and i hate to be THAT guy, but i'll have to block you.

us "responsible" adults are trying to save our own skins from you children (or minors) interacting with our content. yeah, sure, you're responsible for your own media consumption, but if you're gonna sneak in the bar with a fake ID, don't be shocked if a bouncer throws you out - you know?

“Lady Y/N?”

The voice was muffled through the door and the one in question rolled from her side and onto her stomach as she laid in her bed. A low groan emitted from the creature whose limbs were tangled in the blanket and sheets.

. . .

“Lady Y/N?”

A short knock-knock accompanied the repeating words, and Y/N had a feeling of that the lovely woman who she’d love to talk to at any other time wouldn’t stop until she replied.

She pulled herself into a sitting position, smoothed over her unruly hair, and finally pulled the covers up so her pajamas wouldn’t be seen and called out, “Come in!”

The woman opened the door and sent her a sheepish smile. “The All-Father has requested your present, ma’am,” she informed her.

Y/N furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. “Do you know the reason as to why?” She quizzed.

The woman spared a quick, darting glance at Y/N’s window. “Well, the All-Father has requested all of the palace’s royals and higher-ups to gather in the courtyard. He is gathering local citizens for a, ah, play, and more would like, in this words, his ‘most esteemed confidants to enjoy,’,” she answered, subtly bouncing her weight from one foot to the other.

Y/N thought for a moment. This was the first time she was hearing that the King was holding a play — not to mention, the fact that the last play (if you could even call it that, because by Heimdall’s recounting it was horrific) was held before any of the children of Odin were born.

Just thinking about that caused a twinge to hit her stomach and for it to twist up. Loki. Odin’s youngest child and the one that had most recently left her, as he sacrificed herself to save his vaillant brother, Prince Thor. It had been weeks, maybe even a month, since Y/N had heard the news and had been resorted to a lonely, saddened version of herself. Loki was her best friend, the person she trusted more than anything and—no, no, who was she kidding? He’s more than that, and he deserves to be remembered as more than that by her.

He’s also the one that she loves, and has loved for at least the past year when she realized it.

Nonetheless, she had taken many steps to get through the grief of Loki’s dead — as had his father — and she wasn’t going to let all her hard work crumble down on one, singular thought.

“Very well, then. Please inform the All-Father that I will be there shortly, thank you,” she said.

The woman nodded and bowed her head before exiting.

Once the door had been fully shut and she could hear footsteps no more, Y/N crossed over to her window and drew back the curtains, not having missed the look at said window.

The sunlight poured into her room but the stage was indeed sent. Rows of fine chairs sat with rows of fine people in them. In front, Odin stood with a red curtain drawn closed behind him. His arms were gesturing wildly and he had a big grin on his face as he gave his speech.

Despite the curiosity that itched into Y/N’s face, she pushed it aside. She had never seen the King conduct himself in such ways, but alas, everyone grieved differently. So, she closed the curtains and got dressed for the day ahead.

The moment Y/N stepped outside, she could’ve sworn that there was already long beads of sweat trailing down her skin. She let out a huff but journeyed on towards the courtyard, as this formal royal wear was necessary and she had no intention of pissing off Sir Snotty-Dickhead — as she called him (he had some fancy and long name she couldn’t remember, in her defense) — who was Odin’s right hand man.

By the time she got there, Odin was still rambling on with his speech, but his sudden notice of Y/N saved the guests from boredom.

“Aha, the guest of honor! Lady Y/N, herself,” Odin announced, bringing his hands together in a clap and gesturing for her to come toward him.

She betrayed herself and her cheeks involuntarily reddened as all eyes laid on her. She approached Odin and curtsied out of respect, but her mind was full of wonderings of why she, of all, would be singled out.

“I’m sure you all know who Lady Y/N is, yes?” He began, briefly pausing before continuing. “If you sadly do not, let me tell you. Lady Y/N had been a friend of the royal family, specifically my child, Loki’s—” the name caused her to suck in a sharp breath, “—and she was granted the title of Lady to uphold the image of the palace and to complete very important Asgardian duties.”

Once he stopped talking and the crowd clapped politely, Y/N took the opportunity she was presented before it’s door could close and quickly went and sat in her seat, the only seat not occupied yet, in the front row.

Odin then began speaking against whilst he walked to the side, “Speaking of my dear child Loki, this play that has been put together is one designed to honor him and his heroic sacrifice. Without further ado . . . ” He let his words trail off, and the red curtain pulled open.

Y/N’s face contorted into surprise at the words, not expecting this to take place. Again, she reminded herself, everyone grieved differently, so she decided to give it a chance. However, as the play went on, she was quick to realize that honoring Loki wasn’t the intention here. The horrid acting could be excused but Odin himself allowing this mockery of how Loki died? Of how he sacrificed himself? Well, with every second that passed, her face heated more and more — and not due to the sweat — and she grit her teeth, just barely refraining from yelling.

The worst part for her came though when the actor who played Loki did a dramatic reenactment of his sacrificed and the actor who played Thor did the worst fake crying ever. Y/N turned to the others, expecting them to be just as enraged as she was, but was floored to find that no—they were laughing. And not just that, but Odin was having himself a chuckle as well!

Her fingers tightly gripped the edges of her chair and she forced herself to look straight ahead, just about able to hold in her tears until the play was over and the actors bowed.

Afterwards, while everyone was standing and giving Odin rounds and rounds of praises, Y/N stayed rooted in her seat. She couldn’t just let this go by as if it were nothing, but she was struggling to compose herself to confront him.

After a couple minutes of going back-and-forth, she decided, screw composure. She didn’t have to be composed. She was allowed to be angry.

So, she stood up and marched straight for him.

“All-Father,” Y/N said through grit teeth, forcing herself to curtesy, “I request your company in private, if I may.”

It took Odin a moment to tear himself away from accepting his latest comment, but the way he quickly glanced over at Y/N, she knew that he had not noticed — or perhaps he did not care — the state she was in.

“My apologies, Lady Y/N, but should I depart now, I fear I shall upset my comrades!” Odin said, ending his comment in a boastful joy, which resulted in laughter and cheers.

He didn’t wait for her response before engaging in another conversation, and Y/N’s lips remained tightly shut until she decided to just go forth and let her stuffed-up emotions out.

“Fine. I will say it in front of everyone, then!” She said, firmly and loudly, gaining everyone’s attention. “That was a pathetic excuse to remember Loki . . . It was an insult! You mocked him, your own child! How could you even— I . . . I just don’t understand . . . He sacrificed himself for your son and for Asgard and this is how you repay him? God. I expected much, much more from you for him because I . . . Let’s just say that we both love Loki, in our own ways, and I-I . . . I am very disappointed.”

Wanting to flee from the tears that were now streaming down her face and from the silence that was pounding, she turned around and she walked away, the realization that she had just confessed her love in front of everyone hitting her.

“Lady Y/N!”

Odin’s words stopped her in her tracks, but she did not turn around. Just stood. Waited.

“He told Thor, before he passed, that he, uh . . . He loved you, too.”

Y/N stared straight ahead, her hand jutting out to grab the pillar next to her to steady herself.

Loki loved her?

She didn’t stop the tears from coming this time. She let them, and the sobs, overwhelm her.

“Lady Y/N?”

The voice and the knock were much more stiff than they were this morning.

“Come in.”

Her response was devoid of emotion, much more curt than it was this morning.

The same woman turned the door’s knob and opened it, sending Y/N, who was curled up on her bed, head nestled into her knees, a wary look. “The All-Father has requested your presence at his quarters,” she said.

Y/N let out a small huff, in no mood to talk to the King after what had happened. She forced her head up and gazed boredom at the woman. “Is it an emergency?” She deadpanned.

The woman looked around the room and by her lack of response, Y/N knew that either she didn’t know or didn’t want to say.

She sighed. “I will be there shortly,” she said.

The woman nodded and wordlessly left.

After she did, Y/N stood up and went in front of her mirror, taking in her appearance. Her once brushed hair was now frizzy and in knots and her eyes were puffy and red. Angrily, she practically tore the hairbrush through her hair and dabbed at her eyes with makeup until the red could be seen no more. She had no intention of letting him see her this way.

Screw formalities, Y/N thought, as she walked straight into Odin’s quarters which composed of a small living room, a bedroom down the hall, an office, and a bathroom. She didn’t bother to curtsy or announce her presence.

When he finally and gradually turned around from whatever he was doing, a slight look of shock crossed his features, before he replaced it with a warm smile. “Y/N!” He said, but quickly corrected himself, “Lady Y/N.”

Y/N frowned and crossed her arms. “I hope that you have called me here to apologize,” she said, an icy edge to her voice.

Odin nonetheless looked at her kindly. “In a way, yes,” he vaguely said, before a magical transformation underwent before her.

His wrinkles disappeared, his beard disappeared, his grey hair turned jet black, and his clothes transformed into his usual wear.

No longer was the All-Father standing in front of her, but her best friend. The one she loved.

Taken by utter shock, Y/N instinctively stumbled back, her jaw dropping and her eyes widening. “What the hell is this?” She gasped out, not wanting to believe it at first. It was a cruel trick — it must be! There was no way.

“It’s me,” the mischievous deity said, a rare softness to his voice and in his eyes. He took a step forward, but then stopped himself. “I never died, I only impersonated my father.”

Y/N stared at him, angry tears coming to her eyes once more. “How?” She forced out, thinking that maybe she was dreaming. “Why?”

Loki looked around, slightly dumbfounded, as if he hadn’t expected anyone to question him. “I wanted the throne,” he answered, as if it were obvious and a perfectly acceptable reason.

Y/N stared at him as if he had grown two heads. To her, he might as well have.

“Oh, really? So you take over your father, trick everyone - me, your brother - into believing that you’re dead, you banish Sif . . . All because you wanted the goddamn throne?” She cried.

The cluelessness left his eyes and replaced itself with guilt, regret pooling inside him. He looked down, shoulders falling with a sigh.

“I’ve felt guilty tricking you ever since it had all went down. I wanted to tell you but, honestly, a part of me didn’t think you’d be that upset over my death. But you were really, so upset and I . . . I was lost. I didn’t know what to do. All I wanted to do was hug you and tell you that it was fine, that I was here, but I thought I’d screw up your emotions and hurt you even more,” he admitted.

Y/N just looked at him, her frown growing deeper. “That’s an awful excuse,” she hissed out, words laced with venom.

Loki immediately snapped his head up to look at her and his gaze held desperateness. “It’s not an excuse,” he said quickly. “It shouldn’t be. I’m . . . I’m so sorry. The last thing I ever wanted to was to trick you, and . . . I did. But today was the final straw. I couldn’t continue like that.”

Y/N took a step forward, having an inner battle in herself on whether or not to forgive him. “You lied to me,” she reiterated bluntly.

Loki nodded guiltily. “I did,” he agreed in a small voice.

She took a pause, taking in a deep breath. “You told me you loved me,” she added.

There was a brief moment of silence before Loki said, in the same small way but a little more firm now, “I do.”

Y/N kept walking, not even fully sure or convinced of what she was doing, but knowing that she needed to do it, until she was standing just inches away from him. They looked at each other for a couple moments, neither saying anything, until Y/N wrapped her arms around Loki. He returned the embrace.

“Never do that to me again!” She yelled through the tears that were now coming. God, was she tired of crying. Especially today.

Loki hugged her tighter, his own tears falling. “I’m so sorry,” he whispered, and repeated that over, and over, and over again. “I’m an idiot.”

Y/N leaned back and cupped his face with her hands. The love she had for him overwhelmed her pain, and more than anything she needed him now. Besides, she could see his guilt. She could see the truth shining in his eyes. He wouldn’t do anything like this again, because he loved her. And she loved him.

“At least you’re self-aware,” she whispered through a sniff, taking a page out of his book with her joking remark. Before he could quip back (and she was sure he’d have an excellent one), she leaned forward and captured his lips in his a kiss. Loki smiled against her lips and wrapped his arms around her waist.

Friday Flashback: David Bowie Films Unintentional Anti-drug PSA on “The Cher Show” in 1975

Gather ’round children for a very special episode of Sound Bites’ “Friday Flashback,” in which we’ll learn of the dangers not of LSD - that’ll fuck you up, too - but of cocaine.

It’s no secret David Bowie loved the blow and he was pretty obviously loaded with it when he dropped by “The Cher Show” - who knew there was such a thing? - in 1975 to perform what was dubbed a “Young Americans Medley.”

Dressed in white - code for coke? - sporting orange hair and singing and dancing on a circular bandstand, the (extraordinarily) Thin White Duke and the then-Mrs. Gregg Allman began with a cheesy, disco arrangement of Bowie’s song before visiting snippets of hits by Neil Diamond, Three Dog Night, the Crystals - code for meth? did meth exist in ’75? - the Beatles, Bill Withers and many others.

Running on for six interminable minutes, it’s like listening to a cokedtothegillsfriendbabblingonnonsensicallyat1,000wordsaminutewhilesayingabsolutenothingbeforefinallystopping ... to take a breath and/or chop another line.

Cher was likely just playing along. But the people who came up with this were quite clearly gorked out of their minds.

And Bowie? He was on another planet.

This is your brain on cocaine. Don’t blow it.

This is a Public Service Announcement

Gather round children. I think this is a good time to remind everyone the difference between encoding and decoding meaning in text

Now, I'm not going to talk about the actual theory behind this bc no one cares prob, but heres the TL;DR:

The interpretation of a text doesn't have to line up with the creator's intentions. In reality, it usually doesn't.

Let's break it down:

Creating texts (text = books, TV shows, movies, comics, paintings, etc) involves a process called ENCODING. The creator, whoever they are, has some meaning in mind when they make the text - it's supposed to be funny, it's supposed to be heartwarming, it's supposed the be an allegory for the Vietnam War, whatever.

So when the text is shown to the public, some theme or meaning - however insignificant it may be - has been Encoded into it. It may be the literal story you're telling, but it can be more subtle. Its for the creator to decide how they want to do it.

Important: there is no such thing as a text with no Encoded meaning. It's like ppl who say something "isn't political" - everything is political bc everything involves interactions between co-existing indv balancing cooperation with their self-interests, which is what politics really boils down to (feel free to disagree with my definition as loudly as you'd like in my inbox - my point stands)

Now there's a completely separate process taking place with the audience who interacts with this text called DECODING. This is when your viewers/readers/listeners/audience interacts with the creator's text and makes meaning of it.

If the creator is successful, the audience will Decode the text and understand their intented meaning - "crime doesn't pay" or "sharing is good for everyone" or whatever. Good storytelling, therefore, comes from the successful communication of the creator's intended meaning.

Now here's the rub: authorial intentions, at the end of the day, have NO bearing on what the audience decodes (i.e. interprets) the story to mean. Let me say it again: it doesn't matter AT ALL what the author meant to say, if that's not what the audience gets out of it.

In a lot of ways, I (a female white-person) think a lot of this tension is a white-person and/or male-person problem: it's hard to accept criticism for something you didn't mean to say. Like, you weren't trying to be racist - you just made a "historical" drama with no people of color in it. Your movie about gangs in LA isn't supposed to be offensive - there are just a lot of black and latino drug users in gangs. How is it fair to be criticized for saying something you weren't trying to say in the first place, right?

But here's the thing: when you decide to show your creative text to other ppl, you have invited those ppl to Decode your text. You've basically given up control of the texts meaning - all you can do is hope you did a good job Encoding your message so that ppl understand it.

It's like when you accidentally say something that upsets someone: you're supposed to apologize, even if you never intended to upset them. Why? Bc we recognize the fact that what we mean to say and what ppl hear isn't always going to line up. Sometimes it's bc you didn't know some term was racist, but other times (if you're like me) you've said something careless like (after watching a child actor play outside before a show) "I admire your commitment to looking the part, but you probably don't need the smell sweaty too: the audience can't tell, but your castmates can". Was that an incredibly rude thing to say to that child actor and his mother? Yes. Yes it was. Did someone have to point that out to me a few minutes later? Also yes. Bc while my boss knew I wasn't trying to be an asshole, I had been an asshole. So I needed to apologize (and I did)

It all comes down to two things:

1) If you want to tell ppl exactly what you mean, write an essay (or a long Tumblr post)

2) If you don't want ppl to interpret your work, just don't make it public for fucks sake.

Day 3: Cracking the Code 👨‍💻

Preparation Time

The first thing that I did when I entered the classroom today was discuss how I would run the coding lesson that I had prepared for yesterday. I had an idea of what I would be doing but I wanted to run it past my supporting teacher to make sure we were on the same page and by knowing this, I would feel more confident running the activity. I explained that I writing an observation during today’s Maths lesson. 

Numeracy

My observation went really well. I was expecting to be interrupted by a “what are you writing!?” as I was used to this when on placement in a nursery. But, that didn’t happen so I was able to keep writing for 20 minutes. I gathered a lot of information about a group of three children who differed in ability. It was interesting to see how they supported eachother. I still have to write up this observation and then I can make more sense of my notes. From what I remember writing, I picked up on one child who really was not getting the work and as a result was demotivated. After my observation, I helped the same Maths group as I ran an activity for yesterday. I was over the moon (and I think they were too) to see that the children in this group were doing really well with the work. I only needed to intervene by asking them to keep focused on the work instead of making a building with the counting cubes. 

Assembly

During Assembly, I went back to the classroom to prepare for my coding lesson as well as plan for future ones. 

Literacy (Outdoor Learning)

After assembly, the class took clipboards, show-me boards, whiteboard pens and a sheet of connectives outside. The activity involved the children coming up with two related sentences and us four adults (me, my supporting teacher and 2 PSAs) trying to figure out which connective they had used. It was a joy to watch children be so active during a literacy lesson and I think the learning was really effective as well as enjoyable for the children. I had a lot of fun deliberately getting the wrong answer as they used connectives such as “as well as” or “also”.

Coding with Scratch

After lunch, it was down to me to teach the children how to animate their name on Scratch. The night before, I had anxiously written down all the steps I needed to explain and now here I was trying to remember them all. The children gathered around me and a Chromebook and I showed them what steps needed to be taken to create a new project, add a sprite, add instructions to the sprite and run the game. The children seemed to understand but just to double checked I asked them if they were happy with what they were doing and asked things such as “now where do we find the sprites section again?” or “what’s the first block we add to our animation?”. I feel it went really well. I circulated round the room and helped the children to be as individual as possible. A lot of children managed to create things that I knew were possible on the program but had not introduced to them yet. I was very impressed with all their animations and I think they were too! 

Finishing Up and Preparing

I finished off the day by reading “The BFG” to the children up until the bell went. Another teacher had come to take the class towards the end and I explained to her I was nervous about my Music lesson which I was running tomorrow. She kindly introduced me to Charanga. This is a resource that can be used to teach beginner’s music. It has sheet music, excerpts and even tells you what concepts you’ve covered. A great resource for sure! It’s only drawback is some of the songs on it can be a bit babyish or not very exciting. I plan to have a little look at it tonight to see if I can come up with something.

When Tim gets older, whose child do you think he'll have first? Jason's or Dicks ? What is the name of the kid, how is it raised, UGH. I NEED THIS

You know, I haven’t really written about the AOB, pregnant Tim in detail because I have way too many ideas how it might go. I’ve answered a few asks generally about Jason being all panicky like a cute daddy-to-be and Dick smothering him in cuddles and gently support. So, ah, maybe just a few more details about it, yeah?

*Even though it wasn’t necessarily planned, the last round of Tim’s Heat is the one in which his birth control and suppressants might have conflicted or something, so he starts smelling so much like both Dick and Jay that his blockers can’t really hide it. That’s when the detective gets it.

*His first young will probably be a boy and a girl. Dick’s young is their little girl and Jay’s young is their boy. Miri (which is Romani and in remembrance to Dick’s mom, Mary) is beautiful with dainty feature and dark, dark hair. Her eyes are dark blue like Dick’s and she’s always cooing. The second she wrapped a tiny hand around Dami’s fingers, the young Robin was lost. This precious one will always be protected.

Ian is a subtle salute the Irish in Jay’s side. He’s all big shoulders and loud laughter when Jay blows raspberries on his belly or Tim shakes his too long hair in the baby’s face. He’s squeals and kicking little legs when Dick hefts him up in the air, cooing at his son with stars in his eyes.

Like everyone ever becomes more maternal the second Tim admits to family and friends that he’s going to have to step out of the boots and hang up his utility belt for the next nine months, but the minute those precious babes are in the world, Tim, Jay, and Dick are all weepy and nuzzly and so fucking proud and honored and in love. But, B starts making twice as many plans, putting better security in place for the small family, answering texts from Clark, Hal, and Wally while he holds his grandchildren for the first time. 

As in how the children are raised, I’m sure the everyone agrees to settle in Gotham because, honestly, it is home. They might be big missions only for a while, making sure at least two parents are home with the children for the first year or five. 

Wayne Manor is actually home base for the majority of their childhoods, exploring niches and corners, going up to the attic with Mr. Alfred when their fathers are… busy.

For years, the Wayne children (because Tim settled that argument before it ever happened. They all share the last name Wayne, and Bruce’s constant hedging was more flattering that Tim couldn’t help but to agree) always knew Uncle Clark and Aunt Diana were…more than people at Daycare and, later, school. They eventually come to realize how dangerous Gotham is (in school PSAs about what to do when they hear gunshots, an assembly about what to do if the Joker attacks, if a bomb is sited, if a city-wide alarm is going off, all of it gives them a picture), and the understanding that their family has something to do with it.

Their carrier is someone that lies with a bit of the truth, and he’s good. Pops likes to dance around the issue, just sayin’ the damn city is lucky capes are there to take care of the crazy. Daddy just tells them to put their faith in the police, the people on the right side of the law.

It’s not until they’re thirteen or so that the oldest kids find out the secret behind the Grandfather clock and go exploring, see Grandpa in the Batsuit, Dad, Pops, and Daddy gathered around while they went through the night.

Hm. Just a thought.

#PHnews: Parents told to monitor kids amid rising teenage pregnancies

ILOILO CITY – The Commission on Population and Development Western Visayas (PopCom 6) is urging parents, as part of responsible parenthood, to guide and monitor the activities of their children as teenage pregnancy in the region is at an “alarming” level.

"Encourage them to study and most of the time guide your children,” PopCom 6 assistant regional director Jonathan Dioteles said in an interview on Thursday.

Dioteles said based on their analysis of data provided by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), for every 100 live births in the region in 2019, nine belong to the adolescent or 10 to 19 age group.

“Our teenage pregnancy rate is 9.28 percent in 2019, which means in every 100 live births, nine are from adolescents. It is alarming because the acceptable level for teenage pregnancy is only 4 percent. Meaning out of 100, there should only be four who belong to the 10 to 19 age group,” he said.

Based on their data, of the 105, 225 total live births, some 9, 760 are adolescents with three cases reported being only 12 years old when they gave birth.

The highest percentage of teenage pregnancy came from Capiz with 11.2 percent; Guimaras, 10.5 percent; Aklan, 9.73; Negros Occidental, 9.6; Iloilo, 9.5, and Antique, 8.3 percent.

However, Dioteles said there is not much change in the figure as they are seeing almost similar cases of teenage pregnancy since 2011.

In 2018, PopCom recorded 9, 770 teenage pregnancies.

Dioteles said among the factors are the lack of information among adolescents on how to protect themselves, peer pressure, family problems, and exposure to illicit information from social media.

He said another gap that they are looking into is that their advocacy is more focused in the city, schools, and in areas that are accessible to population officers.

The big contributor, he said, is those coming from the geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA) or hard-to-reach places in rural areas.

PopCom, local government units (LGUs), and partner agencies should also reach out to out-of-school youths (OSYs).

Dioteles said due to limitations in the data from the PSA, they could not make further analysis.

PopCom is planning to do a study to assess the effectiveness of its programs aimed at reaching out to adolescents.

So far, Dioteles said, no study was conducted yet so they could not say if their strategy is effective or not.

He added that year-round, they have "Adolescent Health and Development (AHD)" classes aimed at providing appropriate information to adolescents and "Youth for You", which is an interactive activity conducted by population offices all over the region.

There also exists an Information Service and Delivery Network (ISDN) where LGU officials gather to plan out how to address problems on teenage pregnancy.

"AHlam Na!" a mobile application that is downloadable at the Google Playstore also provides adolescents with accurate knowledge on adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH)/AHD-related information with features like quiz and referral pathways, among others. (PNA)

It’s the season for ticks! Prevent Lyme disease by keeping yourself tick-safe with these precautions, learn about identifying Lyme disease symptoms to catch it early, and use these tips for tick removal and prevention. We welcome your tips, too!

Tick bites aren’t just a nuisance: As many as 300,000 people may be diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Typical Lyme disease symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and skin rash. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system.

It is a regional affliction with 95% of the cases occurring in 14 states in the Upper Midwest, New England, and the Mid-Atlantic, but the only state that has had no reports of Lyme disease is Hawaii. Lyme disease is most common in children 5 to 15 years old and adults 40 to 60 years of age, and risk of infection is greatest from May to August.

WHAT IS LYME DISEASE?

An infected tick transmits the spiral-shaped bacterium called a spirochete to us through a tick bite. Because of the spirochete’s shape, it is able to corkscrew its way from the bloodstream into soft tissue, tendons, joints, and bones. There is some controversy about how long the tick needs to be embedded to transmit the disease. The CDC says 24 hours, but some doctors claim only four hours or less will do it.

LYME DISEASE SYMPTOMS

Lyme disease is hard to diagnose because so many of its symptoms—such as fever, chills, sore joints, headaches, and exhaustion—mimic other diseases.

One common symptom is the telltale Lyme disease rash, called erythema migrans. This rash forms the shape of a bullseye around the location of the tick bite. It is red and usually appears within 3 to 14 days of the tick bite. The rash will then grow larger, and sometimes more than one rash can develop. Go to the doctor immediately if you have the rash. Other rashes can develop around tick bites that are not associated with Lyme disease, but it is best to be safe. Not everyone who is infected with Lyme disease contracts the rash, so it is actually a lucky sign that will allow the doctor to make a quick diagnosis and provide treatment.

If Lyme disease is allowed to progress, it can be a debilitating illness. If you live in an area that is prone to ticks carrying Lyme disease, check yourself regularly for ticks and be aware of Lyme disease symptoms. Even if you think you might just have a cold, if you’ve recently had a tick bite, you should check with your doctor.

TYPES OF TICKS

The black-legged tick, or deer tick, is a tiny thing, much smaller than a dog tick, and at the nymph stage it is even smaller—about the size of a poppy seed and translucent. Since the nymphs are so hard to see, they can latch on to us unnoticed. This can make it even harder to recognize the symptoms of Lyme disease for what they are. Normally these nymphs feed on mice, deer, and birds, but any warm body will do.

The deer tick is known to carry Lyme disease. If you have a tick bite from a black-legged tick, save the tick for disease testing.

The black-legged tick has a two-year life cycle. Adults feed on large animals like deer, mate, and lay eggs in the soil in fall and early spring. These eggs hatch into larvae which feed on mice, birds, and people until they become adults in the fall and start the cycle all over again.

Ticks are highly active in the early spring and again in the fall. They are found in the woods, in woodpiles, meadows, tall grass, and near the water’s edge—all the places where we are busy working and playing.

HOW TO PREVENT TICK BITES AND LYME DISEASE

There are several ways to keep ourselves tick-safe. Take the following precautions when working outside: Stay out of tick-infested areas such as overgrown grass, brush, and leaf litter.

Shower after working outside to wash off unattached ticks. Check yourself, the kids, and pets thoroughly for ticks on days you go outdoors.

When outdoors, wear protective clothing. Tall rubber boots are too slippery for ticks. Wear long sleeves and long pants to keep them off your skin. Tuck your pants into your socks to keep ticks from crawling up your leg.

Use a repellent that contains at least 20-30% DEET or wear treated clothing.

Tick Bite Symptoms and Risks

Depending on the species, ticks may carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, or a number of other diseases. In fact, ticks are the leading carriers of diseases to humans in the U.S., and second only to mosquitoes worldwide. Similarly to mosquitoes, toxins in the tick’s saliva cause the disease.

Hard ticks have a tough back plate and tend to feed for hours to days. With hard ticks, disease transmission usually occurs near the end of a meal.

Soft ticks have a more rounded body and lack the back plate. They usually feed for less than an hour and disease transmission can occur in less than a minute.

Lyme disease is caused by hard ticks including deer ticks. Sitting on a log in the woods, leaning up against a tree or gathering wood are risky activities when trying to avoid ticks. Tick bites are generally painless and may go completely unnoticed. You may notice a red, circular bump and some itching and burning once the tick is removed.

Tick Removal

To remove a tick, use tweezers to firmly grasp the tick as close to its head and as close to your skin as possible. Avoid squeezing the tick’s abdomen; crushing a tick may transmit diseases.

Pull gently upward until the tick comes free. Do not twist and turn the tick, as the head or mouth parts may break off and stay in the skin, increasing the chances for infection.

When removing a tick with tweezers, be sure to remove the entire tick and leave no parts in the skin. (Photo Credit: University of Maine.)

Do not use petroleum jelly or a match to remove the tick. Clean the bite area with soap and water or a mild disinfectant. Disinfect the tweezers with rubbing alcohol, and wash your hands thoroughly.

Observe the bite area for several days. Illnesses transmitted by the tick often begin only days or weeks after the tick is gone. If symptoms occur, tell the physician if you have been outdoors.

Symptoms may include fever, numbness, rash, confusion, weakness, pain and swelling in the joints, shortness of breath, nausea, and/or vomiting. Blood tests are needed to diagnose any illness.

What to Do with a Removed Tick

If you are bitten, it is recommended that you save the tick for identification and send it to a lab to test if the tick is carrying a disease. In this case, place the tick in a tightly closed container, such as a vial or a zippered plastic bag (doubled, if the tick is alive).

Do not soak the tick in alcohol. If the tick is alive (which is preferable for testing), some labs ask that you place a cotton ball moistened with a few drops of water in the container.

Label the container with the date, your name and contact information, the bite’s location on the body, and your general health at the time.

If known, also list the geographical location from which the tick may have originated. Send live ticks as soon as possible to a lab; some labs accept dead or damaged ticks as well. If the tick is dead and you don’t want to have it tested, you can store the container in the freezer for later tick ID in case symptoms develop.

When disposing of a tick that has not attached yet, drop it into a sealed plastic bag and throw it into the trash. Or, you can drop it into a jar of rubbing alcohol; with this method, you can save it for later identification, although it is better not to do this if you want to have it tested for disease.

You can also wrap the tick up in tape and throw it into the garbage; if you plan to have the tick tested, however, some labs ask that you do not use this method, as it is hard to extract the tick for testing. No matter what method you choose, do not touch the tick with your bare fingers.

Do not flush a live tick down the toilet. Ticks do not drown in water and have been known to crawl back up out of the toilet bowl.

For a non-chemical tick spray: 20 drops pure, organic Young Living lemongrass essential oil, 20 drops of Y.L. eucalyptas ess. oil in 4 oz. of water in a glass spray bottle. I carry Scotch tape with me at all times. If a tick in still on the surface of the skin and not yet embedded, it can be removed with tape. Cut off a strip of tape, place the sticky side down on the tick, lift up the tape and fold it over. I then smash the tick inside the tape and dispose of it. Yes, peppermint oil works well to repel not just ticks but also mosquitos. Another thing that works well is medicated body powder, which is like baby powder but smells strongly of menthol and eucalyptus. For eliminating ticks, I've found dropping them in a tiny cup of vegetable oil far more efficient than even alcohol - it smothers them and they can't crawl out. I've found that the best way to deter ticks is to dab a spot of peppermint oil on ankles, wrists and just about anywhere really! It smells pleasant to us humans but apparently not to these little pests. I also dab some on the back of my dog's neck which is about the only place she can't reach with her tongue... The best thing i found for our dogs is Petcor Flea Spray, just spray a cloth and wipe their fur. It does a decent job at keeping the ticks off of them. It's not fool proof though, our dogs will still get some in the head. For humans, spray Sawyer Permethrin on boots and pants. We have a plant here in southern Arkansas called French Mulberry it grows wild here and can be found around most wooded areas. My grandfather showed me that if the leaves are crushed and rubbed on your legs you will stay pretty much tick free. I'M FROM NH. A few people in my family have Lyme disease so our family has chickens now and I'd also recommend Tick-Tubes- they contain a pesticide to kill ticks as larva before they can infect wildlife or people. Ho Lu said to him: "I have carefully perused your 13 chapters. May I submit your theory of managing soldiers to a slight test?" 

Sun Tzu replied: "You may.

"Ho Lu asked: "Could the test be applied to women?"The answer was again in the affirmative so arrangements were made to bring 180 women out of the Palace. 

Sun Tzu divided them into two companies and placed one of the King's favorite concubines at the head of each. He then bade them all take spears in their hands and addressed them thus: "I presume you know the difference between front and back, right hand and left hand?" The girls replied: Yes. 

Sun Tzu went on: "When I say "Eyes front," you must look straight ahead. When I say "Left turn," you must face towards your left hand. When I say "Right turn," you must face towards your right hand. When I say "About turn," you must face right round towards your back." Again the girls assented. 

The words of command having been thus explained, he set up the halberds and battle-axes in order to begin the drill. Then, to the sound of drums, he gave the order "Right turn." But the girls only burst out laughing.

Great amazement and aw came upon the entire congregation and upon all who heard great fear came upon them.

Many miracles and signs were wrought among the people by the apostles and they were all gathered together in Solomon Porch. 

Not one of the unbelieving Jews dared to interfer with them. The people held them in respect. The number of those who believed in the Lord was greatly increased by multitudes both of men and women. This was actually instituted a while ago unofficially, but I figured, with the rash of new followers I’ve received under the age of 18, I’d make a formal announcement: I will block all minors who follow any of my accounts. TACLOBAN CITY -- The literacy and education survey conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) every five years has begun in Region 8 (Eastern Visayas) and will cover 2, 566 households. 

PSA 8 Director Wilma Perante said the Functional Literacy, Education, and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS) was designed to come up with data to guide the formulation of policies and programs to help improve the population’s literacy and education status.

This round of FLEMMS would be the sixth series of the functional literacy surveys since its previous run in 1989, 1994, 2003, 2008, and 2013. This year’s survey began on November 11 and will run until December 3.

“This is the first FLEMMS in the region after 10 years since we’re not covered in the 2013 survey due to the destruction of Super Typhoon Yolanda,” Perante said in a phone interview on Friday.

Some 2, 566 sample households were systematically identified in the region. They will be visited by PSA personnel during the data gathering period.

The study aims to estimate the proportion of the population 10 years old and more who are basically literate, estimate the proportion of the population 10 years to 64 years who are functionally literate, and determine their socio-economic characteristics.

The survey also seeks to determine the educational skill qualifications of the population in terms of formal schooling and to determine the mass media exposure of the population.

Based on the 2013 FLEMMS, one in every 10, or about four million, Filipino children and youths were not in school.

The PSA defines out-of-school children as persons aged six years to 14 years who are not attending school. Out-of-school youths are those under the 15 years to 24 years age bracket not attending school, have not finished any college or post-secondary course, and are not working.

Survey results showed that of the nearly four million out-of-school children and youths, 22.9 percent have entered into union or marriage, 19.2 percent cited insufficient family income to send a child to school, and 19.1 percent cited lack of interest in attending school. (PNA)
