While he was repressed then, he wasn't as of Charlie's Home Alone, so I think it's clear to claim that a part of his "homosexual awakening" was connected to the fact that he was gradually getting more and more into the idea of being punished (gone sexual) for his sins, to a point where he was just genuinely jerking off to the "evils of homosexuality"

I do wanna continue here though and say Season 15 is pretty interesting because we see Mac battle between being Catholic and proudly gay. He seemingly has no issue bragging to a Priest in the middle of a church that he's into triple penetration, but it is his sex life that is the driving "reasoning" for why he thinks he should become a Catholic Priest:

He's been "S-ing&F-ing" his way though life for too long and now he thinks God has taken away one of his identities (Irish) as a result. Mac's idea of being punished by/for God continues, but it's now through the form of revocation (as opposed to shame or flagellation). I think there's a clear "connect the dots" idea that depriving himself of sex (via becoming a Priest) is an "evolved" form of allowing God to punish him for being gay.

Obviously Mac learns he was lied to, as he actually is Irish, so his "journey" here is a bit of a wash, but the fact that his rationale jumped to God punishing him for having gay sex still stands. As he grows to accept himself, he's still looking for ways to feel shame (which, as we've seen, gets him off)...

But is the constant seeking for some form of punishment still there? We didn't see much of his Catholicism in Season 16 (I think the only mention of God from Mac was in The Gang Gets Cursed), but we did continue to see his sex life and—well, that was pretty heavy on Mac, openly gay dating, somehow managing to be neglected and deprived of actual gay sex, wasn't it?

i always thought that dennis' speech about identity not having to factor into every decision a person makes was a slight at mac involving his hierarchy of personal identities into anything he says, but i don't think that was the case. i thought it was because mac coming out and claiming that part of himself that he'd repressed for so long made dennis jealous at mac's willful openess about his gayness, but the speech in 'the gang's still in ireland' and mac's turmoil about the crumble of his different identities highlighted that mac - regardless of his coming out - doesn't know who he is any more than dennis does. and it's that uncertainty that makes dennis sink deeper into his repression because he's afraid. mac, once brazen and confident, now sits wallowing in a pub deciding if he should do something purely because he identifies as it. this precariousness of mac's self translates as shaky and unpredictable to dennis, something he desperately wants mac to fix (the gang chokes) but mac can't and it pushes dennis away from the idea of romance with mac because he's so scared of it failing and he doesn't want it to

mac mcdonald is like, a guy made in a lab spesifically to make me kin him. his parents are neglectful and his dad is a meth dealer, turns to misogyny and toxic masculinity to hide his gayness, and the perfect blend of being religious and utterly depraved. but i just cant get into him. the brain worms just arent worming in his direction. i still like him, but its the least of all the gang. i even like frank better than him. i came in iasip for charlie, but find mac, who is too similar like me, yet ends up falling hard for dee's loser charms and stupid drunk behaviors anyway. maybe its true that you are repulsed with whom youre most alike with.

Remembering Arthur Ross on the day of his birth, singer and songwriter most notable for his collaborations with Leon Ware. He was the younger brother of entertainer Diana Ross. Shortly after Diana Ross had established herself as a solo artist, she recruited him to Motown as an appointed songwriter in 1972. Ross collaborated with songwriter Leon Ware and, together, the duo wrote hits for artists such as Michael Jackson, The Miracles and Marvin Gaye. Among the hits were the Top 20 "I Wanna Be Where You Are" and "I Want You". His work with Ware continues to be covered. "I Want You" has been covered by the late Robert Palmer, Madonna, Michael McDonald, and even Diana Ross herself on her 2007 album I Love You. His sole rare album on Motown, Changes, was finally released on CD in August 2012. The album opens with his most covered song, "I Want You" and closes with another self-penned song "To The Baby", which he wrote for big sister Diana, a long-delayed tribute to her first two daughters, Rhonda Ross Kendrick and Tracee Ellis Ross
