This one is for the morons.
For the students busily cosplaying at being terrorists on our city’s campuses.
The automatons whose new radical-chic uniform is an Arab keffiyeh.
Specifically to the ones who have decided to chant for “Intifada” and unveil a vast banner down the side of Hamilton Hall at Columbia this week.
“Intifada,” the banner said, in huge letters as the mob below shrieked approval.
Most of these students weren’t born when the Palestinians last had an “Intifada.”
3This week, an “Intifada” banner was draped down Columbia’s Hamilton Hall.LP Media
So although youth and ignorance aren’t any real excuse, perhaps I can educate these students about what they are actually calling for.
I invite them to “do the work” of understanding what it means when people call for “Intifada” and what it actually means.
In June 2001, the Intifada that Palestinian clerics and politicians had called for was in full flight.
Every day Israelis boarding buses had to look around in case one of the other passengers was wearing a suicide vest and about to turn the vehicle into a charnel house.
On June 1, young people in Tel Aviv were enjoying a beautiful summer evening.
3Police and medics search the scene as victims lie on the ground outside a discotheque in Tel Aviv on June 1, 2001.AP
Many of them were milling around a nightclub much like those that the students at Columbia go to on a weekend.
But this one was more beautifully located, sitting on the city’s beachfront.
The Dolphinarium club was packed that night.
Outside were crowds of young people hoping to get in.
The Hamas terrorist detonated the bomb amid the queue of young women who were hoping to get into the club.
He killed 21 young people.
Sixteen of the victims were teenagers. Not even college age yet.
The youngest of them was 14-year old Maria Tagilchev.
Many of the victims were children of parents who had emigrated to Israel from the Soviet Union.
Their parents fled one totalitarian regime only to lose their children to terrorism in Tel Aviv.
Eyewitnesses described the limbs of the young women lying strewn across the road.
Some of the bodies were lying in piles.
This is what Intifada means.

To Racine, who taught me to tighten a sentence till it wept to Pascal, from whom I learned to doubt the perceptible and to be sure only of the imperceptible to insatiable Rabelais to Montesquieu, geographer of thought to melancholy Baudelaire to Georges Schéhadé, the magician to Céline, at once grandiose and base.

Orthodox Christians to be visited by Bishop of the Mid-Atlantic
Cumberland, MD: The Antiochian Chapel of Cumberland will receive its first pastoral visit on Saturday, April 26, 2025 from His Grace, the Very Reverend Thomas (Joseph), Bishop of the Diocese of Oakland, Charleston, and the Mid-Atlantic, a diocese of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. Bishop Thomas is visiting the Chapel to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on the occasion of the first anniversary of the congregation moving into the church located at 13133 Warrior Drive in Cresaptown. This will also mark two and a half years since the Orthodox community in the region was reestablished.
Of Arab-American heritage, Thomas Joseph was born in Paterson, New Jersey in 1953. He attended John F. Kennedy High School in Paterson, graduating in 1970. He went on to college at William Paterson College, graduating in 1974. After college, he worked in the Department of Community Improvements in Paterson, then served as a teacher for the Paterson Board of Education. When the Antiochian Village camp opened in the late 1970s, he was recruited by Fr. John Namie to serve as one of the original camp counselors from 1979 to 1982.
In the fall of 1979, Thomas began part-time study at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary, and was made a subdeacon by Metropolitan Philip (Saliba) of Blessed Memory in July of 1982. He continued his studies until the spring of 1983, when he was assigned to Virgin Mary Church in Yonkers, New York.
In 1984, Metropolitan Philip assigned him to St. George Church in Houston, Texas, where he served as Director of Christian Education and Youth Services. While in Texas, the Archdiocese also assigned him to oversee Christian Education and then later teen activities for the churches in the Southwest Region (now the Diocese of Wichita and Mid-America). In July of 1988 Thomas was ordained to the diaconate by Archbishop Michael (Shaheen) of Toledo.
On August 28, 1994, Bishop Antoun (Khouri) ordained Dcn. Thomas to the priesthood, and Fr. Thomas served as assistant pastor at his parish in Houston until August of 1996, when he was appointed pastor of St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church in Pinellas Park, Florida, near St. Petersburg.
Between 1996 and his consecration to the episcopacy, Fr. Thomas served in multiple capacities aside from his work as a pastor. He was an appointed member of the Archdiocese Youth Department Board; Spiritual Advisor to the Teen SOYO (Society of Orthodox Youth Organization) Southeastern Region; Chairperson of the Tampa Bay Orthodox Clergy Association; former Director of Programs in Pastoral Bioethics for the International Academy of Bioethics and Philosophy of Medicine in the United States; Speaker at Braunels, Germany, and at City University of Hong Kong on Bioethics; author of published articles on Christian Bioethics; Speaker at Antiochian Village and third session camp priest for many years; and past President and Vice President of the Tampa Bay Council of Orthodox Churches. In July 2002, Fr. Thomas was granted a Master of Arts degree in Applied Orthodox Theology jointly from the Antiochian House of Studies and the St. John of Damascus School of Theology of the University of Balamand in Lebanon.
On February 15, 2004, Fr. Thomas was elevated to the rank of archimandrite by Bp. Antoun, and on December 5, 2004, he was consecrated to the episcopacy by Patriarch Ignatius IV (Hazim) of Antioch in Damascus, Syria.
Bishop Thomas was enthroned as Bishop of Oakland and the East at St. George Cathedral in Pittsburgh (Borough of Oakland), Pennsylvania, on May 6, 2005. In August of 2006, he graduated summa cum laude with a Doctorate in Education from California Coast University.  His Grace also sits on the editorial board of the journal Christian Bioethics, which is published by Oxford University Press.  In 2005 and 2017, Bishop Thomas gave the commencement address at St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan, Pennsylvania.
Throughout his ministry, His Grace has authored a number of published articles, including:

Other articles include "Holy Hierarch Nicholas: Patron of Children and Model for Parents," "Sacred Music in the Holy Orthodox Tradition," "Rebuilding the Walls of Jerusalem: The Spiritual Benefit of Frequent Communion," and "Seeking First the Kingdom of God."
In 2006, the Church of St. George in Charleston, West Virginia purchased a chancery for the Diocese, and in October of that year St. George was elevated to a cathedral, thus adding another see to the Diocese. The Diocese is named the Diocese of Oakland, Charleston and the Mid-Atlantic. His Grace's residence is at the diocesan chancery in Charleston.
In addition to his duties in the Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic, Bishop Thomas also served as the locum tenens of the Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest from December 2010 to December 2011. Within the Archdiocese, His Grace assists Metropolitan Joseph in overseeing the Antiochian Village, the Christian Education Department, the Youth Department, the Antiochian House of Studies, the Department of Prison Ministry, the Department of Homeschooling, and the military chaplains of the Archdiocese.
Since 2011, he has also chaired the Committee for Youth of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America.  He is also the episcopal liaison for the Assembly to the Orthodox Christian Education Commission (OCEC).
From May 2014 to 2018, His Grace served as Assistant to the President of the Balamand University in charge of Student Recruitment in North America. In May 2015, His Grace was elected to the Board of Trustees of St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan, Pennsylvania. In 2017, St. Tikhon's awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Divinity.
In October 2021, the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America voted to create a new Youth and Young Adult Agency.  At that time, His Grace Bp. Thomas was appointed as the Episcopal Liaison to the new agency.
His Grace was also appointed to The Saint Constantine School National Board on June 29, 2022 by His Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH and by a unanimous vote of the board members.
This will be the very first time a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy is celebrated in the Cumberland/Potomac Highlands area. During the Liturgy Bishop Thomas will bless the facilities purchased by the Orthodox Christian community in 2024, along with the newly painted and installed icons of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and St. John the Baptist.
The public is invited to join with the Orthodox community to celebrate the Holy Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the blessing of the Chapel. The Divine Liturgy will begin at 10:00 AM. For additional information, please visit “Antiochian Orthodox Cumberland” on Facebook, or call (301) 697-1070.

A member of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission was forced to step down this week following a furious response to antisemitic comments he proffered at a meeting of the body on July 18, in which he claimed that the Torah instructs Jews to murder Palestinians.
The resignation of the commissioner, Khaliq Raufi, was announced on Wednesday by San Diego County Supervisor Joel Anderson in a scathing statement.
“Commissioner Raufi’s ignorant comments were hurtful and in no way reflect my personal views, but they do highlight the urgent need to focus on education, bridge building, and to advocate for tolerance,” said Anderson, who appointed Raufi to the 31 member commission. “After meeting with Commissioner Raufi, I have received his resignation letter.”
The city’s Human Relations Commission — which answers to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, the county’s legislative branch — was established in May 2020 to “promote positive human relations, respect, and the integrity of every individual regardless of gender, religion, culture, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, or citizenship status.”
At the July 18 meeting, which was recorded, Raufi told those in attendance that he had read a few verses of the Book of Deuteronomy — the fifth and final book of the Torah — calling it the “Book of Jews.”
“It states, ‘go kill Palestinians — wipe them all out,'” Raufi claimed. “It’s a teaching that they, on a daily basis, teach their followers in their synagogues. So how are we gonna resolve that?”
At this juncture, Raufi was interrupted by an observer, Sara Brown, the San Diego regional director of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), who pointedly asked him, “are you serious right now?”
Brown later expressed her shock that only one of the assembled commissioners — Kate Clark, who works for Jewish Family Services — took Raufi to task for his remarks. “It was so unbelievably shocking in the moment — and even more shocking was the silence of every single commissioner and county staff,” she told the San Diego Union-Tribune.
An editorial in the same outlet quoted San Diego’s Mayor Todd Gloria’s statement that “hate has no place in San Diego and there will be consequences for those who spread it in our city.” It went on to argue: “The county Human Relations Commission, which needs better vetting and training, must take that to heart. Otherwise, what’s the point of it?”
Raufi delivered his speech during a debate concerning a controversy at the commission the previous month, in which another commissioner — George Khoury, a supporter of the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) — denounced Israel as a “racist, fascist state” as he described how his Palestinian family fled from Jerusalem during the 1948 War of Independence.
In a June 20 letter to the commission following Khoury’s speech, local Jewish leaders noted: “Rather than speak about the importance of Arab American Heritage Month, an opportunity to further celebrate diversity in our San Diego community, Commissioner Khoury’s statement negated Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, diminished the historical Jewish connection to the land, and depicted the creation of Israel as a war crime — language that goes beyond legitimate criticism of Israeli government policies.”
