in goodsir's letters he asked for around 40 shirts (and other clothes to also be made for him) and I was wondering if that was the expected amount for men to have on a voyage of this length. With that amount you'd think they were doing laundry less than once a month. Also who was doing the laundry and how would it be dried in freezing conditions?
lol plenty of expeditions were lucky if they were doing laundry once a month!!!!!!! i suppose on a fully naval expedition, there were stewards and domestics who could do the officers' washing, but for the lower deck and on smaller expeditions it was every man for himself. as to the "how," 19th/20th-century laborious laundry methods apply: big tub of hot water, soap/soda/lye, wash, rinse, press, dry. ships generally were warm-ish and dry inside, so laundry could be hung up below decks, or above decks if the weather was good enough. same goes for hut life in antarctica.
obviously this was a lot of work though, and it seems like many explorers really tried to avoid having to deal with it. especially when out sledging, clothes just straight-up weren't changed for months at a time!!! stinky boys...
here's an excerpt from georges lecointe's book about the belgica's really horrible laundry situation:
Each of us had his own system to avoid doing laundry. Dobrowolski did not change his undergarments until he could no longer do otherwise. Then he carried all his dirty things up into the rigging, counting on the snow and the hoarfrost to freshen them! After some time, he finally noticed that snow did not clean anything at all, and decided to do laundry like all the others...but with what loathing! Cook changed every eight or ten days and, when his supply was depleted, he put on undergarments that he had worn some time before, thus giving an illusion of change. Arctowski's system was that of a true scholar. He knew very well where everything could be found in his laboratory, but he had no clue as to the contents of his trunks. Sometimes, when searching for a document, he would come across some shirts or some undershirts. Without wasting time, he would change undergarments several times in the space of a week, then wait for weeks on end, until a happy coincidence revealed other resources.
also importantly to your original question, "shirts" in goodsir's case refers to a 19th-century undershirt which is the modern equivalent of underwear. so he's basically doing that classic "packing 3x the amount of underwear you need for a trip" move that we've all done. but he was probably glad of it by a certain point on the expedition... clean shirts would be very useful to trade with other men, if he didn't end up needing them all himself!

My Favorite Films and Performances of 2020
“I wish I could’ve seen it on the big screen.”
It was a strange year, and even stranger year of movie watching. In 2020 I saw only one of my top films in a theater, which is crazy (like much else over these past months). But the experience of keeping up with the movies this year was a reminder that great filmmaking can transcend the specifics of the viewing experience. In your living room, in bed, projected onto the side of a garage, streaming on Twitch, broken up into multiple sittings, maybe even on your phone (desperate times)… if doesn’t matter as long as it connects with you. A great film has the power to soothe and transport, to alter your perspective, to re-wire your brain. So while I didn’t get on a single airplane last year, I definitely went places. And I’m grateful for these changes of scenery. For the time-travel as well; last year in my house, we found great comfort in revisiting a bunch of old favorites. It was also an opportunity to finally watch a number of those older films that had someone evaded us… a year of catching up, now or never. We were members of a weekly movie club for some months — that was cool. Another pleasant silver lining was the emergence of virtual film festivals, which have been a fantastic opportunity. I hope that they can continue in some form when this pandemic is in the rearview. Because, you know, getting to Park City is a real schlep. All this to say: like you, I’ll always remember 2020. In this truly crummy year, the movies really helped.
I’m including some of the film festival stuff that’s coming out a little later, because the boundaries between 2020 films and 2021 films feels blurry to me without proper theatrical releases.

What the flip! The chance discovery that's uncovered treasures of the very earliest cinema
Some of the earliest experiments in film 120 years ago were reproduced as flipbooks for wider audiences. Now a painstaking restoration project has brought long-lost gems back to life
Tumblr media
Some lost films are more lost than others. There are very early works that no one now alive has seen, and we have little hope of recovering. While later silent feature films were duplicated and distributed widely, there are hundreds of short experiments by the first film-makers, movies no more than a few seconds long, that no longer exist even as a memory.
It seemed too good to be true, then, that lost films by Georges Méliès could really have been found by chance in a German bookshop in 2013. Yet a dogged research project by an independent scholar from France, Thierry Lecointe, has helped uncover miraculous images from lost films, not just by Méliès, but also by Alice Guy-Blaché.
The frames were preserved as images printed on to the card pages of tiny flipbooks. With digital technology, the flipbooks, known as folioscopes, have now become something like film fragments again. The photographer Onno Petersen shot each page in high-resolution and the motion-picture restoration expert Robert Byrne, from the San Francisco Silent Film festival, produced animations revealing such treats as a long-lost magic trick, dance, comic sketch or a train caught on camera more than a century ago.
The book is such a deceptively elegant and fluid format that we tend to take it for granted and yet it was instrumental in popularizing motion pictures and even responsible for the discovery a hundred years later, of lost films by Georges Méliès - found by chance in a German bookstore. ~eP

50 Awesome Women To Know: Part 5
Yes, this was supposed to be one post.
To say the least, it was not.
Altheia Jones-LeCointe (1945 -- ): Trinidadian, doctor and biochemist (she holds a PhD from University College London), as well as a major leader in the British Black Panther/anti-colonialism movement in the 1970s. She was insistent that defending black women and girls should be a big part of its aims.
Anbara Salam Khalidi (1897-1986): Lebanese, author, classics scholar, translator (the first to translate the Odyssey and the Aeneid into Arabic), one of the early figures of modern Arab feminism.
Anna Yevreinova (1844-1919): Russian, first Russian woman to receive a Juris Doctor degree, ran away from an arranged marriage and ended up in a long-term lesbian relationship, correspondent of Anton Chekhov and others, feminist, lawyer, editor, and scholar.
Anne Dieu-le-Veut (1661-1710): French, pirate and buccaneer (you’ve heard of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, but probably not her). Married another pirate after he refused to duel her since he didn’t want to fight a woman, then proposed to her on the spot. Described as “brave, stern, and ruthless.”
Benazir Bhutto (1953-2007): Pakistani, the first female leader of a democratic government in a Muslim nation when she became Prime Minister in 1988. Champion of liberal reforms and women’s rights, if controversial for alleged corruption in her administration. Assassinated in 2007.
Bertha von Suttner (1843-1914): Austrian, first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1905, for her ceaseless (if ultimately unsuccessful) efforts to keep early 20th-century Europe out of war. Correspondent of Alfred Nobel, author of many novels. With her husband, she founded a league devoted to fighting the growing Anti-Semitism in Europe, and sponsored a broad philosophy of tolerance.
Blanca Aráuz (1909-1933): Nicaraguan, first National Heroine of the country for her efforts to fight the U.S. occupation in the 1920s/30s (part of the Banana Wars of the U.S.’s long and disgraceful presence in Central America).
Christine Jorgensen (1926-1989): American, trans woman, the first to become widely known in America after her transition in 1951. Trans activist, public speaker, actress, and singer.
Deborah (c. 12th century BC): Israeli, the only female prophet and Judge of Israel mentioned in the Bible, Jewish heroine and leader of the nation for almost forty years.
Dhuoda (9th century): Frankish, best known for her Liber manualis which she wrote as a lengthy book of instruction for her son, and which serves as an invaluable source for Carolingian social history. Educated and influential.
Dido Elizabeth Belle (1761-1804): British/West Indian, the mixed-race daughter of a British Royal Navy captain, niece of Lord William Mansfield, whose 1772 ruling outlawed slavery in Britain. The 2013 film Belle is based on her life.
Efua Sutherland (1924-1996): Ghanaian, author, educator, activist, known for her support of Pan-Africanism and the development of Ghanaian theater. Fierce advocate for children and community. Her daughter Esi is a professor, human rights activist, and advocate for female education and empowerment.
Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204): French, and yes, I realize everyone who follows me probably knows about her already, but I just had to put her on an awesome ladies list as a matter of principle.
Eliza Haywood (c. 1693-1756): English, prolific author, actress, and novelist in the early eighteenth century, known as part of the “fair triumvirate of wit” with Aphra Behn and Delarivier Manley, author of romantic novels, translations, poetry, and drama. A best-seller of her day.
Elizabeth Holloway Marston (1893-1993) and Olivia Byrne (1904-1985): American, credited as the real-life inspiration for Wonder Woman, who was created by Elizabeth’s husband William Moulton Marston; the three were in a long-term polyamorous relationship. Elizabeth was also an accomplished psychologist and attorney.
Émilienne Moreau-Evrard (1898-1971): French, heroine during World War I who then became a crucial member of the French Resistance during World War II (!). She not only survived both world wars, but became a politician in the Socialist Party, and died of old age.
Enheduanna (23rd century BC): Sumerian, one of the first people in history whose name we have ever known. Poet, politician, high priestess, and scribe who wrote her own autobiography.
Gabriela Zapolska (1857-1921): Polish, author, actress, social critic, and outspoken feminist, whose many works of fiction often dealt frankly with taboo subjects and shocked the conservative Catholic culture of her day.
George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans) (1819-1880): English, best known by her male pen name; novelist, poet, journalist, and one of the most influential writers of the Victorian era. Her novel Middlemarch is sometimes cited as one of the best works of fiction in the English language.
Gerritdina Benders-Letteboer (1909-1980): Dutch, another Resistance heroine of World War II who protected many Dutch Jews from the Nazis. Her husband deliberately committed suicide in prison rather than risk giving up where she and the Jews were hidden.
Grace Hopper (1906-1992): American, and honestly, few words exist to convey this woman’s awesomeness. 115 pounds of whoopass, mathematics professor, cutting-edge computer scientist, and oh yes, United States Navy rear admiral. Among other things, a college at Yale, a supercomputer, and a Navy missile destroyer are named for her. Received countless honorary doctorates and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Grace Thorpe (1921-2008): Native American, served in World War II as a corporal in the Women’s Army Corps and received the Bronze Star Medal, outspoken Native rights and environmental activist and champion of nuclear disarmament.
Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim (c.935-after 973): German, nun, Latin author and poet, and another of the few female medieval historians we know of, with works including a biography of Emperor Otto the Great.
Iris Murdoch (1919-1999): Irish/British, graduated with first-class honors from Oxford University where she later taught philosophy, prolific novelist and Dame Commander, openly bisexual, one of the most prominent modern British authors.
Jacinda Ardern (1980 -- ): New Zealander, current Prime Minister at the age of 37, social democrat, progressive, and fourth youngest world leader.

How filmmakers are highlighting racial discrimination and violence in the criminal justice system
Three standout films at this years’ BFI London Film Festival deal with the topic of racism in the criminal justice system: Steve McQueen’s Mangrove, Garrett Bradley’s Time and Ken Fero’s Ultraviolence. These works feel more timely than ever with the resurgence of a global Black Lives Matter movement following the killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd in America earlier this year. Their deaths shone a spotlight on the issue of racist policing and its fatal consequences sparking protests worldwide. The Black Lives Matter movement has thrown into question the purpose of the police and the criminal justice system as a whole, giving rise to discussions of prison abolition. The campaign against state violence is showing no signs of slowing down; more recently protests have erupted in Nigeria as part of the #EndSARS movement to stop the violence, extortion and harassment carried out by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
Mangrove, Steve Mcqueen’s interpretation of the real-life case of the Mangrove Nine, opened the festival, giving this long-overlooked moment in Black British history the attention it deserves. The first installation of his highly anticipated Small Axe anthology series, the film tells the true story of The Mangrove – a legendary Caribbean restaurant in Notting Hill, which was opened in 1968 and targeted by the police with a relentless campaign to shut it down. When protests against this racist policing turned violent, nine people were arrested and charged with incitement to riot and affray. They were tried at the Old Bailey, including the Mangrove’s owner Frank Crichlow (Shaun Parkes), racial justice campaigner Darcus Howe (Malachi Kirby), and leader of the British Black Panther Movement Altheia Jones-Lecointe (Letitia Wright).
The film is not only compelling, but it also provides a much-needed lesson in Black British history and civil rights. Showing that (contrary to the Black History Month syllabus currently taught in schools) there is a wealth of history to be explored in the UK beyond the life of Victorian nurse Mary Seacole. As Darcus Howe says in his closing statement at the Mangrove trial, this was a moment we should all remember – “…the history of Britain cannot be written without it” – and almost 50 years later Steve McQueen has made sure of this; the Mangrove Nine’s pioneering activism has not been forgotten.
Tumblr media
At the Black Lives Matter protests which swept the UK this summer people chanted the names of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery. You were less likely to hear the names of British victims of police brutality: Joy Gardner (1993), Trevor Smith (2019), Paul Coker (2005), Sarah Reed (2016) and Christopher Alder (1998), to name but a few. Radical filmmaking collective Migrant Media’s deeply unsettling documentary Ultraviolence calls attention to the problem of violent and racist policing in the UK, showing definitively that it is not just an American issue. Director Ken Fero says he hopes the film will make people acknowledge the uncomfortable truths of racism in Britain: “Most films are just a way of forgetting, and we want to make films that make people remember.”
Ultraviolence, the follow up to Injustice (2001) which the police tried and failed to suppress, provides an unflinching look into six fatal police brutality cases in the UK. The film presents some of these deaths in excruciating detail, including showing extremely upsetting CCTV footage of Christopher Alder and Paul Coker in their final moments. Fero has defended the decision to include this footage, as he followed the wishes of the families who wanted this to be seen. He says his aim is for audiences to “keep the memory of these cases. I hope they feel angry, but they also want to turn that anger into action.”
The impact of mass incarceration, which sees Black people imprisoned at disproportionate rates, is examined in Garrett Bradley’s heart-wrenching documentary Time. The film follows Fox Rich, a woman on a mission to get her husband Rob out of prison and bring him home to her and their six sons. Rob is serving a 60-year sentence with no parole for a botched bank robbery – almost unheard of for a crime of this nature – whilst Fox served three and a half years for driving the getaway car.
Utilising decades worth of home videos, as well as original footage, Time paints a beautifully intricate portrait of a family kept apart by incarceration. It explores the more subtle violence of separation; of a cold and bureaucratic criminal justice system which fails to appreciate the humanity of prisoners and those who love them. Rich is a vocal prison abolitionist, making links between slavery and mass incarceration in private prisons which turn a profit. She presents compelling arguments for a complete overhaul of the American criminal justice system, which focuses so purely on retribution, overlooking much of the harm caused by crime and ultimately doing little to repair it.
Whilst it is good to see these issues being given space within the BFI London Film Festival programme this year, this must continue beyond the events of 2020. Fero stresses the importance of making sure these topics aren’t just engaged with as a result of current trends: “It’s really good the BFI are doing this, and let’s hope it’s done again, and again, and again. Not just this year, it needs to be constant, then things might change.”
