I told my manager and she was so chill about it omg she was like “what team is this?” and I told her and she was like OH I KNOW MICHAEL and then went into this whole spiel about how she works with his team often and what they do and I was like wait I KNOW MICHAEL TOO - I’ve seen his name before but haven’t worked with him directly - so hopefully even though I don’t have direct experience with what the job is, the fact that I understand what his department does will help 🙏 my manager also said she can put in a good word for me if I want and I was like bruh what
I'm girlbossing too hard again, I decided to apply to an internal posting just cause it looked interesting and I didn't think I had a chance but I've made it past the first round of interviews ... now I have to tell my manager that I could be leaving this position
#she’s on contract herself so she totally gets wanting to find a full time job instead#she was like ‘I’m really happy for you thank you for telling me’#and she was like ‘if you have more questions about his team just let me know’#so 🤷♀️ maybe I do have a chance#get me that $10k salary bump#personal

regarding my last reblog/post:
so. we had a come to jesus meeting on wednesday as an agency. essentially a project was due and to be delivered to a client that morning. i walked into the office and immediately the head of the agency started firing off questions at me. “where is this? why isn’t this done?” etc etc. And I was just like hey, my shit is done. I haven’t packaged or prepped it but I’ve pulled all the data and it’s been analyzed, I just haven’t dropped it into the deck because frankly, I didn’t even know there was a deck.
and he was like what? i’m looking at the deck right now. and then i showed him what i had been sent at 5:30 p.m. the night before. i had a blank deck. he had a nearly completed deck. he was like, “why didn’t you have this or know about this?” and i’m just like this has been a constant problem with this client and this project manager and account manager.
so he called an all hands meeting. and boy. did we have it out. I stood up for myself in a big way. and I straight up called people out because i had been tracking this shit and there’s a fcking paper trail where i’ve had to pull info out of these people. my critique was this: 1. you don’t assign me tasks in the way that YOU set forth by adopting this project management software and 2. client info is never relayed to me. if something is reprioritized, i’m never notified by this team.
and their critique of me: you need to be more proactive. come to us with projects you can do.
my rebuttal: i sent everyone a list of what i can do a month in. i gave everyone a copy of my resume. i’m not in client meetings. i can’t just pull shit out of the air to do for clients if i don’t know what’s going on.
their response: well if this is such a big problem, you should have communicated it to us earlier.
me: [acct manager], i have spoken to you on several occasions, face-to-face, telling you what i need. i have sent it over slack. i have said it over asana. i have emailed it to you. then, [project manager who is acct managers boss] i came to you and told you all of this. and nothing has happened until it fell in [agency head’s lap]. and HE called this meeting. not y’all. this concerns me. i am siloed and am not in any client meetings. i didn’t even know there was a client meeting today. how am i supposed to know when things are due if it isn’t in asana???
and the whole time, the half of the office that isn’t going to join new client, acted flabbergasted that this was even a problem for me.
and i cannot stand this shit. so i had a real conversation with head of agency about moving over to client. and that’s what I’ve decided to do. why?
1. the work isn’t as hard. i will be learning less on a daily basis but it won’t take as much energy out of me. i think this is fine because i have my consulting stuff about to take off. maybe it’s even an advantage. 2. i will have healthcare, 401k, and stock options. i really need healthcare right now. it does suck that this is such a factor but it’s true. 3. i will probably get a 5-10k raise. I’ll probably get a title bump too but that’s only so i can get more money. i could care less about my title tbh. the play here is, the client will match industry salary for my position so if i ask for a title bump then that = a raise. 4. i will get a standing desk.
i am still sad about it though. i wanted to do this agency thing. i just know though, that i CANNOT operate with what has been going on. and with [head of agency] moving over and not being involved on a daily basis, it’ll just get worse for me. idk. sucks but whatever i can do to help my consulting flourish, i have to be willing to do.

Holy shit y'all.
So our HR department has been in the throes of a huge reorg for like six months or more now. Part of that was they were redoing all the titles and job descriptions, including mine. And I'd told David flat out in my review input that I'd really like to make the jump to Analyst and flee the tyranny of the time clock if possible.
So today, we had a meeting to talk about title and job description and stuff.
I'm getting a promotion to HRIS Analyst, salaried exempt, pay bump of about $10k/yr, retroactive back to June 2017, when we hired Lindsay for the assistant role.
This is...huge. And David told me he'd told Stephanie that it wasn't fair to me, they'd had me in a position (the assistant role) that was well below my abilities for far too long, I am an asset to the organization and someone who "has the mission in their heart" (nonprofit speak) and I could've been making more money elsewhere for a long time now, and the organization owed it to me to recognize that. And she agreed wholeheartedly and so this is happening.
I cried a little bit. I'm not good at being expressive when I thank people, but I tried, and I think David gets that about me anyway.
I am having Many Feels right now. This is...really the first time I've felt genuinely valued and appreciated by the organization - I've always known I was valued and appreciated by individual folks, that's never been an issue, but by the organization? Previously it always felt like what I was given was given grudgingly and only after long fighting. This? This was someone half a step from the top of the organization saying "yes, the organization owes you better than we've given you in the past, you're worth it and we're going to make good on it."
(Also, holy shit that retro is gonna help solve some financial problems lol)

Last Day
Rant about me leaving my job because I need to get these thoughts out of my brain.
My last day at the job I've had for four years was yesterday (though really, it felt like it was two weeks ago before I went on leave, but anyway...), and it still feels really bittersweet. I made a lot of friends, learned a tonne, and really matured in that job. I wanted to stay there for as long as I could because I saw the potential for growth, I believed in the product, and I loved the people I worked with.
I interviewed for a promotion that I was eminently qualified for but that I ultimately didn't get, which I could have stomached, but I have friends on the management team and found out certain things about the interview process. One specific person on the interview panel was a "no" for me, and then could not give any "tangible feedback" about why he held that opinion. That person doesn't know me, isn't at all involved in my work, and the only thing they do know about me is that I'm gay, which leads me to believe they're homophobic.
That person's meddling then lead to the impromptu second round of interviews, where I didn't interview as strongly as the other candidate in what is effectively a popularity contest; I wasn't surprised that was the result. It isn't that the competitor was unqualified, they're doing a fantastic job, but they'd only been with the company for a year, while I'd been there for four. I needed the career opportunity, they didn't. I wasn't annoyed with them because of course they should apply, who cares what anyone else is doing, I was only annoyed with the leaders who chose them over me.
So, they break the news to me that I didn't get the job, but they said in the same breath, "but we'll expect you to keep onboarding new hires and helping the team" -- oh, the things a team leader would do? All I was told at the time, and all I've ever been told, is that the person who got the position "interviewed slightly more strongly than I did" and that I was "such a strong candidate". I was never given actual feedback, and I don't believe there even really is any feedback. They made a choice and had nothing to back it up with, which is bullshit.
I felt slighted, betrayed, like it wasn't at all fair, and so I began looking for other opportunities. One fell into my lap right as I began looking, and it turned out to be a really great one. High salary, still in tech, title bump, small start-up. I interviewed and I got the job. I broke the news to my manager that I was resigning, and it was then revealed to me that the person who got the promotion I wanted needed to step down, and the position was then offered to me. What the fuck?
The money they offered was good but didn't match or beat my new offer by a measly $10k, so I felt like it was just an empty offer. If they wanted to keep me, really wanted me to stay, they'd have given me that extra money, but I honestly don't know that I would have taken it. After everything was handled so poorly, along with a myriad of other changes made very quickly, I just felt like it was time to move on.
It turns out that this person was only using the position as a contingency in the event that they weren't invited to be part of a PhD program, which they were invited to, and thus needed to step down. At this point, I'm slightly annoyed. The one career growth opportunity in four years I've wanted, the one I've seen others get in the US but that was never available to me, the one that allows me to continue to grow at the company I worked at... was a contingency to this person?
They apologised to me, saying "I wish I could go back and not apply". I don't think they expected that I would resign so quickly (and neither did I), but doesn't that show some level of... cognisance that they knew they were doing something shitty? It ultimately doesn't matter, but it makes me so incredibly angry to think about it. They're a good person, and I can't really blame someone for looking after themselves, but also... fuck 'em.
I'm trying not to stew on it, I absolutely let these kinds of things fester in me, so I wanted to write all of this out. But, I suppose I learned a lesson. I won't stay at a job that doesn't give me growth for as long as I did ever again.

This is such elementary economics that you’d think it wouldn’t need to be said. But look at the Washington Post report on how states are responding to the “shortages.” They notice that they aren’t getting many applicants, and what do they do? They reduce the job requirements! Instead of saying “We don’t have enough teachers, clearly we’re not paying the market rate,” they say “We don’t have enough teachers, clearly there are just too few qualified people, therefore we should eliminate the literacy requirement so that anyone can be a teacher.” You can see what this leads to: teachers remain low-paid and overworked, except now they’re illiterate and the schools get worse.
ALWAYS be wary of schools that are suddenly hiring for multiple positions that were filled the year before. 1/3 of the staff is new? Guess why they others left? You are guaranteed to be offered insultingly low salaries, and then on top of that, be overworked and under appreciated.
When my mother joined a private school as the new head, each year, waaay too many teachers left because of low pay scales set by the board. It was an absolute headache trying to find new teachers because the school board had set the salaries so damn low. She finally just told them that their school was a mess because of these salaries, and that in order to attract and keep new talent (and to keep tuition paying families happy), they had to raise salaries to at LEAST match the public schools, and ideally, be just slightly higher. She succeeded in her argument, the entire staff got a 10K pay raise, the folks who were newly hired were better qualified, and turnover virtually disappeared.
At my first school (public), my entire English department privately asked me to become the new department chair. But since the school was only offering an extra $500/year for the position, I never accepted. It’s an insulting compensation for the work involved.
The last school I taught at just lost their best lead teacher because she was horribly overworked (never had a single day she was able to only teach in her classroom.. always had to assist in others; had co-teacher who literally fell asleep and didn’t know how to teach the lessons or where the materials were.. he’s been rehired (??)) and woefully underpaid by almost $15K. Parents were in LOVE with this teacher, and now she’s leaving and it’s incredibly likely scores of parents will leave as well. The school claims they’re having a hard time finding a new teacher.
Now, at my current school, I’m practically fighting with my admin to recognize that their low salaries are going to cost them an entire program if they don’t bump their compensation. If they don’t raise salaries in two years, it’s practically a guarantee that the two teachers (and only two teachers they have), will walk and the program will dissolve because the qualifications needed to be a teacher in this program require multiple additional certifications that are extremely rare in this area.

SHE GOT THE JOB!
SHE GOT THE JOB AND A 10K SALARY INCREASE
Like cost of living is higher but not THAT much higher so that’s an amazing bump.
I’m so glad she’s going to get out of that abusive toxic environment. This morning, not even a month left of classes, he fired one of the other teachers, one of her closest friends there, who he’d obviously suspected of being one of the whistle blowers. Like. Short of absolutely heinous offenses there’s not really an excuse to fire someone so very late in the year except as a revenge and intimidation tactic against anyone else who might speak up against him.
BUT my friend is finally free with a good job with a good school (and she knows some of the other teachers there so she knows she’s not walking blindly into another disaster area) in a new city where she can get a fresh start.
And she’s now about half the distance from me so visits on regular weekends is actually a possibility now because we don’t need an entire day alotted to travel.
I’m just. I so happy for her that job and those people were slowly killing her and now she can get out and everything about the situation is better like, there’s literally no downside except she has to leave her kids which was going to happen anyway because she couldn’t do another year at that place regardless.
So my cousin, his fiancee, and my friend all got their jobs I’m just so happy things are working out for the people in my life. Like. They all definitely DESERVED those jobs but that’s not always a guarantee in hiring and especially not in this economy. So YAY

Speed bump
It wouldn’t be life without one right? Honestly, if something just completely worked out for me, I would keel over and die!
It has been my dream to be a teacher since I was in elementary school myself. I graduated in 2012 and getting a job proved to be as difficult as everyone said it would be. Fast forward to 2016, having spent years in daycares and 1000 applications later, I got a taste of my dream taking over for a maternity leave in second grade. It was amazing but just a taste of my dream that fueled my fire.
I should have known something was coming with how easily I fell into my dream job.
Our lender needed an offer letter since contracts aren’t issued until may. I requested one from the principal and she happily obliged. And quoted my salary at 10k less than I was expecting. Here’s the thing about teaching. Salary is rarely discussed at the time of interview because it’s public knowledge. When I did my research on this district it showed a salary only about 10k less than nj salaries. Not to shabby considering the lower cost of living. But then this letter. So I did more research. Turns out the pay scale I was looking at was the same name district but in Virginia. Ugh. I’m not ashamed to say that I melted the eff down. I cried. I yelled. I threw things. (Out of site of my child..the yelling and throwing anyway). I thought it was over, my dream was crushed and done. Then my husband came to the rescue. He dove into research on cost of benefits and rent on houses and decided we could still swing it. He’s incredible and I’m so grateful for him. So long story short, our dream is changed. We’re still moving but we’re not buying right away. It hurts, but the cool thing is we can get a beautiful 1800sq ft house for what we pay in rent for our 1200 sq ft apartment We’re going to be okay. I’m very lucky.

What kills me is that there’s a bunch of people in this office who could probably get a $10k per year bump in their current salary, with this certification.
Just wrapped up the first of eight for an online training class for Power BI from Microsoft.
It’s a bit dry but a useful program to learn. And expensive.
One of the executives also on the course came out at the halfway point laughing hysterically about how they had no idea what was going on. And that they weren’t keeping up. That if they needed to ever use this that they would just submit the stuff for IT to do.
They went on to explain that they got through college doing that. Teaming up with the quiet person in the class and letting them do most of the work.
This is also the person who would regularly brag about not knowing how to do their job and just googling most of it.
This person makes over $120,000/year, and got a job that didn’t exist before they landed it.
It helps to know people.

Why are republicans fighting the health insurance mandate and not fighting the car insurance mandate?
If you have to buy car insurance and get penalized for driving without car insurance, whats the difference here? Its as much a privilege to drive as it is to receive healthcare. However no one thinks its an over reach of government to mandate car insurance. When you get in a car accident with an uninsured driver you have to pay for your own damage, so how different is it then when americans use the public healthcare system, the government has to use TAX DOLLARS to pay for their health care. Also why is it being categorized as a Government Takeover of Healthcare ? If I buy health insurance wouldnt it be more like a Privatization of Healthcare seeing that instead of having vast amounts of tax dollars going into the system, the health system would now be funded by the insurance companies by paying out claims.""

Is there such a thing as driver insurance where the car does not have to be insured?

I have an anxiety disorder which requires medication and have had 2 eye surgeries for retinal problems. Need car insurance help!?
Weird/awful situation. Co-signed on car loan with a longtime friend when he broke off and started his own business. His business tanked, as did his personal life. Lost his job, his business, everything. He's now about a year behind in payments, and the bank is coming after me. Since it's destroying my credit (and life), I'm paying off the loan. The bad news continues. Apparently he loaned the car to his brother, that has disappered and isn't returning it, and the car is nowhere to be found. So now I own nothing. I know that I am going to need some time to job hunt (my field is very competitive) and I would also like to do some volunteer work before I start my career. Problem is, if I am not a full-time student, my parents' health insurance won't cover me, and if I don't or can't find a job with benefits right away, I will be left uninsured. Any ideas where I can get affordable health insurance for short-term (no more than a year and a half) ??? Thanks!""

Looking for cheap & crappy life insurance.?
I am looking for sources of *REALLY* cheap life insurance. I have to have life insurance for the next six years (declining each year), while I pay off a structured legal settlement. I don't care about financial stability of the company or a history of hassling the beneficiaries to collect. I don't care about guaranteed renewability, as if I'm not insurable, I don't have to buy the insurance. All I care about is price and that the policy comes with an official receipt that will satisfy their lawyers. Websites such as INSweb typically only offer 5-year term or longer, and I want cheaper than that.""

What is the cheapest Insurance available for a 21 year old?
I've been looking at cars and quotes for about a month now, and I can find nothing affordable, so I thought I'd ask on this website and see if there is anyone who has had the same situation and found a solution. I'm 20 years old, turning 21 in September and I have not drove since I passed my test 2 years ago. I have never owned a car or been a second driver on anyone's policy. Insurance is ridiculously high, so I was wondering if anyone in the same situation knows a cheap insurance company. I'm also okay with being a second driver on my parents policy, although this is still usually to expensive. Thanks!""

Insurance for 16-20 year old Male?
Hello all, I am currently 16, and i have my drivers license. I am on my parents plan and i pay about $100 a month for full coverage with my parents cars. But here is my real question, I have been saving for a while (5 years) and i have enough to buy a car i have dreamed of buying for a long time. So i am going to, but my question is what would my insurence be if i did? the car is a 2002 BMW M3 SMG. It has 76,200 Miles on it. I am paying $20,000 for it. I am going to buy it weather the insurance is $1,000 or $100. I have a job and can pay for $1,000 if needed.. so if anyone knows a estimate of what it would be, let me know. If it helps, i have had my drivers license for a month. Also after i buy it, i may just not drive it, if it is too much $$$.. so if it would go down for me when im say 17-20 let me know how much =] Here are some pictures of the car: http://picasaweb.google.com/evanesterman/2002BMWM3SMG# Thanks""
Can insurance companies automatically add new drivers to an existing policy?
I had my g1 (permit) and got my g2 (license). I called the insurance company to get a quote of how much more it is going to cost my dad (which is what I'm going to have to pay) and they are telling me that I have to notify them that my license is now a g2 class. They can't quote me until he calls them (he's at work) when my dad calls to confirm then they will change it automatically and add me. But I don't have a choice if I want to add or not (If I don't like the rate) can they forcibly add me to a policy even if I don't agree with the rate? kinda tricky to explain but I hope you understand what I'm saying and if not then I will add additional details as necessary.

I have a 99' silverado LS 5.3 liter truck. It was hit in the parking lot by some fool at work and now all the body panels on the passenger side are dented. I took it to a dealer to get an estimate (since the guy has insurance) they quoted it at 7500 dollars worth of damage. I know that the truck doesn't actually book for much more than that. The truck still drives fine just that it is beat up on one side and the door won't open. I still owe about 3k on the truck. I have yet to get an adjuster to come look at it from state farm. Do you think the truck will be totalled? What are my options and how much will they sell the truck back for if it is a total? If it is a total what value will they go off of and how much should I expect for my truck which was in fair condition? Will the adjuster make a check out to me or will he send it to my bank or both? Any help with this from someone that has had a vehicle totalled by someone else would be greatly appreicated..I really don't know.

Something in lieu of insurance?
I have been working part-time for a company and about to become full-time. One of the concerns that was raised is that insurance will be expensive. He pays 100% of everyone's insurance for their families. I suggested that we can revisit the insurance in a year and do something else in lieu of the insurance. Less costly. He also pays for parking for the employees. I'm not sure of what to ask for though. I was thinking a gas allowance but I wanted to have a few ideas to present in case he shoots one or more down.

Car Insurance Company have had my car for OVER A YEAR.?
Ok, so this is a little complicated... Oct 2008 I had a car accident. My car was written off. My car was towed to a garage and was held there while the insurance company evaluated the damage. THAT WAS THE LAST TIME I SAW MY CAR. Because the size of my excess (800) and the amount of damage matched the value of the car (800) I was advised it would be pointless to claim on the insurance and it was written off. The accident was my fault and I held my hands up and admitted it and the other party walked away with everything sorted. No suggestion of fraud and certainly nothing fraudulent on my part. Towards the end of 2008 my insurance company started falling off the radar, not returning my calls or my emails, letters etc. I repeatedly asked what I was supposed to do next (I'd never had an accident before and the whole process confused me because they kept giving me conflicting info) and where my car was. I was ignored (or given incorrect info). In the end I declared a SORN on the car and had so much going on in my personal life, I forgot about it, knowing the car was off the road. Anyway, I'm now trying to track the car down as the SORN is about to run out. Insurance company are still off the radar and refusing to answer. Now they're saying they have no record of me, my policy OR my car. So I've lost my car, I don't know who's got it and yet I'm still liable for it. What can I do? Can I get the police involved? Trading standards? ANYTHING? I don't care about the car, whoever has it can keep it! I just don't want to be liable for it! By the way, the insurance company involved is SwiftCover.com, in case anyone is thinking of going with them because they're cheap. They're cheap because they're RUBBISH.""

Where I Come From: Part I
To understand where I am, you have to understand where I’ve come from. This post is all about my favorite thing: me.
I grew up in a suburb. Hence, my suburban taste. Growing up my mom worked and my dad was retired. I cannot say that he “stayed home with us” because he actually did the opposite. He sent my brother and I to daycare at a nearby church (Baptist!) until we were school age. My dad was 56 when I was born, and from the day I blessed the suburbs with my presence – he retired. My parents made that choice together. My mom still had many years of earning potential and she wanted to work.
Dad: My dad had worked since he was very young, supporting himself really as far back as he can remember. He did not come from much and was born during a time in our history – the Great Depression – when money, opportunity and wealth did not exist in his small hometown of Loogootee, Indiana. Being born during that time was a blessing and a curse. He struggled as a young man but had very solid, firm financial goals because he had seen the worst of the worst. He lived through a time where the financial future was extremely uncertain and volatile. He made it a point to earn his own money and valued that money much higher than its true value – he saw it as his future financial freedom, a way to get out of Loogootee, Indiana. As he worked and saved, he certainly made mistakes along the way – but he knew his end goal and he stuck with it, doing whatever he needed to. He worked bad jobs, good jobs, hard jobs, long jobs and shady jobs – but he worked and he saved and he kept his eye on the end goal. He did not buy flashy things even once he had enough, he just kept the end goal in mind. So when 56 came around and this beautiful suburban baby came along, he was able to say, “Screw it,” to work and be home to have the flexibility he wanted.
Mom: My mom worked since she was young as well, but not necessarily to support herself, more so to help out with her expenses, save for college, a car, etc. Mom came from a middle class working family where she did not want or need for anything but certainly was not handed a wad of cash whenever she wanted either. She had a similar mindset as my dad in that she knew when she worked that she was saving for something bigger – not just the latest, greatest, flashiest – but for college. She went to college, graduated and immediately started working. By the time she met my Dad and they had kids, she still had lots of working years and potential for more money – she also wanted to work since she did find parts of it rewarding from both the career aspect but also a social aspect as well. I’ve watched my mom move up the corporate ladder into a pretty hefty career role and salary – so I’d say her decision to continue working was spot on. At the young age of XX, Mom is still receiving raises, bonuses and title bumps, so I’d say they/she made the right choice. She’s close to retirement age now but has planned well enough that she will live comfortably once she decides to pull the trigger.
I grew up also not needing or wanting for anything. Did my parents buy me a brand new BMW when I turned 16? No, but both my brother and I were given cars (with no car payment or insurance payment attached) so I still consider myself very lucky. I always had new “cool” clothes growing up (Abercrombie anyone? - sick.) and we were sent to any and all summer camps, day camps, sport camps, retreats, field trips, summer classes, etc. that we wanted – no questions asked – so I’d say, we had it very good and my parents managed their money well. I grew up being shielded from any money issues really – my parents never lost a home, or had medical bills or an accident at work that kept them from working, there was no losing of jobs either. I do know that at one point mom was laid off from a bank who was being bought out by another, but we never heard much about it, our parents did not have to worry because they had savings, and within no time at all, my mom had a new (better!) job than before, so it was almost a non-event. For all of these reasons, and many many many more, I am a fortunate girl. I worked a few jobs through high school (grocery store, babysitting, summer tennis camp) but really that money was mine to spend however I wanted (clothes and makeup). For these same reasons, I did not get a swift kick in the you know what, until I graduated college and was sent “off on my own.”
I graduated college in 2008 with two options, get a job or go to law school. I had thought of going to law school seriously for two years and had somewhat of a plan of what I would do with a law degree but by no means had I thought through the finances of being a student for an additional 3 years. I was extremely and awfully fortunate to have two parents who planned since the time I was little for myself and my brother to attend college. Not only did they plan by constantly instilling in us that college was part of our path, but they made sure that path was as easy as possible for us by providing fully funded 4 year educations. I went to a private school in North Carolina for 4 years which by no means was the price of Northwestern, but was easily $30K-$35K a year including tuition and living expenses (if not more, the way they allowed me to live.) My brother went to a large public school in North Carolina, but again, the way my parents allowed him to live, easily cost $10K-$15K a year. We both received incredibly respectful college educations, graduated in four years with no debt. While I was preparing to go to law school and had seemingly, no worries, I had other friends working with lenders on a student loan repayment plan with money they didn’t even make yet. This “debt free” life was not something I understood at the time, while I was in college or when I first graduated, but it is something I have come to understand very, very well. Isn’t that how it always goes – by the time you appreciate something, the time has come and gone? I know I’ve thanked my parents before for my education and for their diligent planning, but probably not to the extent I should have. I like to think the way I can repay and “thank” them is by continuing to be a valuable citizen, taking advantage of any and every opportunity that comes my way and by passing the gift of education along by donating to my alma mater and planning for my children’s future. I like to think that my life, now, is a proverbial “thank you” and I have used every ounce of what they gave me to my advantage and benefit.
*NOTE: I agree and understand college is not the only path to take after high school. I acknowledge there are many paths that may be more economical and end up with the same respectful degree. My path right out of high school was to go to college, my parents paid my full way there, I graduated in 4 years and use my degree daily. I give back to my college quarterly and love where I went to school. I won’t apologize for that. I will acknowledge and agree there are MANY paths you can take to be successful.
The moral of the story is: I had parents who from day one saw value in saving money and planning for the future.
This has really shaped me in the last few years as Mister and I plan our future and plan for a family. As we’ve thought through our own childhoods, our college experience, where we believe the education system is headed, we are fairly confident we want our child(ren) to have the same options we did and have the ability to go to college wherever they choose.
Mister grew up in England, in a mid-size seaside town. His childhood was spent in a middle class family as well where he wanted for nothing but certainly was not flashing new cars or the latest and greatest. He was taken on lots of travels and always had a plentiful Christmas. His parents owned their own business for a number of years, giving him a glimpse into what a true work ethic should look like. His college years were half covered by the government and the other half he paid himself. He chose a college close to home to save money and worked throughout to put himself through college and for spending money. Mister does not begrudge or wish for a different path, he liked his college and is glad he stayed nearby but it did make it even more concrete in his mind that he did not want his child to have to stay near home if they did not want to when the time came to choose a college.
When I graduated college, my parents helped me get my first apartment, a small one bedroom for $655 a month, 4 miles from the law school. I had decided to go to law school and at the time my parents were a bit up in the air on whether they would help pay for law school or whether I would go it alone. For the first semester, it was a bit half and half. By second semester, my mom laid it out. I was on my own. She felt depleting their savings or retirement carried a much larger consequence to everyone’s future than me incurring student loan debt. She was absolutely right and I think her number one goal at that age and time should have been socking money away for retirement. She would still pay for my health insurance but at 22, it was time for me to spread my wings. She helped me apply for financial aid and get set up with a student loan. While I do not resent or hold a grudge with her for doing so, the fact is from that day forward, I was on my own – suddenly making adult financial decisions without much education or support. It was probably the smartest thing they could of done – rip off that bandaid. To be fair, of course when we went out to dinner or if we stopped at the grocery to pick something up, she would pick up the tab, so there were certainly still fringe benefits coming my way but 95% of my expenses now fell on me.
The problem became the student loans. Man, are they easy to get. They don’t explain the terms very well or when they do, they’re not easily understood. Luckily all of mine were from the government and not private loans. I attended a relatively inexpensive law school, a state school, so tuition and books were not as high as many of my counterparts. But living expenses were another story. I had always had the ability to go out to eat, buy clothes and go out with friends without batting an eye. With student loans, you can still do those things because they will basically give you as much as you ask for. Every semester, the first day of class, my new student loan I had requested would hit my bank account and I would “budget” out the next 6 months of living expenses. I use the word budget particularly lightly. By “budget” I mean, I would only budget out my rent, utilities, car insurance, and a few other necessities but pretended my food bill and fun bill were much lower than what they actually were. By that 6th month, things were tight and I was foaming at the mouth for my next student loan check to hit my bank account unaware. Much like gaining weight, it comes on easy, but is challenging to get off.
It was around this time that Mister moved to America. His income helped but with immigration and legal bills coming our way to get his visas and green card sorted out, we still relied on a student loan each month to make ends meet. To his credit, he did everything he could to provide as much as he could on a limited work visa. He worked bad hours with bad managers to help where he could (it was this fact and trait that would ultimately make me realize he was the type of life partner who would do anything when the going got tough to get things done.)
I made it through law school (it was a blur that I do not remember). About 6 months before graduation, I started looking for a job. Wow. Wowwww. I was in for a shock. The job market was not at all kind to a 25 year old baby shark attorney without a law license. The North Carolina attorney job market was over saturated – really the entire country was over saturated with other baby shark attorneys. A bunch of Type A people, thinking they knew the law, biting each other for the chance at any job they could get their fins on. It was around this time that Mister got a job offer in Texas at a new hotel opening, looking for new finance staff. Mister and I took a trip to Texas and decided with the job potential on his end and the cost of living in Texas, it was a no brainer – we were moving to Texas. I decided to suspend my job search until I was in Texas. The day after graduation, I packed up my Ford Focus and drove to Dallas, Texas to meet my husband, who had already been there for 2 months and started a new life. This was the best move we ever made. Being away from everything we knew and being forced to really figure it all out on our own was a make or break it moment for our relationship And we made it.
We found a reasonable apartment to rent, Mister loved the change of scenery and being in a bigger city and I studied for the Texas bar alone in a SMU Law Library room for 3 months. It was not fun or glamorous and I was miserable those first few months. But I pulled up my boot straps, kept my head down, took the bar, and a week after the bar was hired on at a law firm as a true blue baby shark attorney. I found out in November that I had passed the bar and received a hefty raise to make my shark status official. We started looking at a new, nicer apartment, started making friends, started to create new memories and create new “favorite places.” We really found our groove and started to thrive as to young 20-somethings.
We have now been in Dallas for 5 years. We’ve steadily increased our income, decreased our debt and have matured in how we value each dollar we bring in. In Part Two on my financial history, I’ll delve into what we’ve gotten ourselves in and gotten ourselves out of in the last 5 years.
See you suburbanites soon!
