Some of the oldest remaining ancient texts were written by Andals, Valyrians, Ghiscari, and Asshai'i.(3) After the Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold in the Ghiscari wars, the Ghiscari began speaking the High Valyrian of their conquerors.(4)

The High Valyrian phrase valar morghulis‎(16) is translated as 'all men must die.'(17) A counterpart phrase, valar dohaeris,(18) is translated as 'all men must serve.'(19)

The word dracarys is translated as meaning 'dragonfire.'(20) Obsidian is called 'dragonglass' in the Common Tongue, but 'frozen fire' in High Valyrian.(21)Valonqar is the word for 'little brother.'(22) High Valyrian is the most likely source language for maegi (pronounced differently from 'Maggy'),(23) which means 'wise'.(24)

The Valyrian writing system, or at least a Valyrian writing system, is described as involving glyphs.(25) It was also probably standard practice to write on scrolls, and not in books.(26) The glyphs can also be inscribed, as on an old Valyrian dragon horn, which, when sounded, had 'every line and letter shimmering with white fire.'(27) Valyrian carvings have been found on obelisks.(28)

Valyrian steel is forged with spells, as well as hammers.(29) Some smiths still know them, although not entirely.(30)

The Valyrians most likely gave Valyrian names to their dragons, as the dragons Balerion, Meraxes, Vhagar, and Syrax were named after Valyrian gods and goddesses.(38)(39) However, not all dragons of House Targaryen had Valyrian names (e.g., Queen Alysanne Targaryen's dragon, Silverwing(31)).

Eight of the nine Free Cities were founded as colonies of the Valyrian Freehold, and are thus likely to bear Valyrian names as well:

Volantis's satellite towns of Selhorys, Valysar, and Volon Therys likely have Valyrian names as well. It is also probable that Elyria, Mantarys, Oros, Tolos, Tyria, and Velos are Valyrian in name, being cities close to Old Valyria.(40)

Bastard Valyrian

Free Cities

Bastard Valyrian includes the languages of the nine Free Cities.(1) Each of the cities has its own dialect, and each dialect likely has its own separate derived vocabulary. Syrio Forel of Braavos speaks the Common Tongue with a lilting accent.(41) One of the Brave Companions is described as having a thick Myrish accent.(42)

The Free Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(43) The Valyrian of the Free Cities is described as sounding 'liquid'.(44)

Slaver Cities

The Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold five thousand years ago, and the Ghiscari have since spoken High Valyrian. The Slaver's Bay cities of Yunkai, Meereen, and Astapor have their own versions of bastard Valyrian, which have been influenced mainly by Old Ghiscari, the ancient language of Old Ghis. Like the Free Cities, the people of the Slaver Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(2)

Astapori Valyrian is described as having a 'characteristic growl,' influenced by Ghiscari.(2) The dialect of Yunkai is close enough to that of Astapor to be mutually intelligible.(45)

Valyrian Voice Translator

Yunkai used to be part of the Old Empire of Ghis, and has multiple languages spoken in the city. Mhysa, Maela, Aelalla, Qathei, and Tato are given as words for 'mother', but which tongue fits which word is unknown (excepting the first, which is Ghiscari).(45)

According to George R. R. Martin,

Tolkien was a philologist, and an Oxford don, and could spend decades laboriously inventing Elvish in all its detail. I, alas, am only a hardworking SF and fantasy novel(sic), and I don't have his gift for languages. That is to say, I have not actually created a Valyrian language. The best I could do was try to sketch in each of the chief tongues of my imaginary world in broad strokes, and give them each their characteristic sounds and spellings.(57)

With numerous fantasy shows gaining more and more popularity, it's no shock that many fans are going the extra mile. For instance, it was reported that over 800,000 people started learning 'Valyrian,' a language spoken by characters on 'Game of Thrones.' Incredible stories like 'Star Wars' and 'Lord of the Rings' also have their own unique languages, which you can start to learn about in this helpful gallery.

Hey Yasmin, its me archivalmars2 (Jonathan), anyways to my question. It's been bugging me for a while, I keep wondering though, what did the Valyrians themselves actually look like or rather dress? I know that with their history (Freehold vs Ghis) that its a comparison to Rome vs Carthage. While their knowledge, magic, weapons, and the Doom is similar to Atlantis. (Besides the silver-gold hair and purple eyes.) But I've always imagined them dressing like a cross between Egyptian/Roman attire.

Hey Jonathan! This is a question I ask myself a great deal and honestly we can all draw various comparisons to different historic periods. I too like to consider Valyrian fashion to be an amalgamation of Roman/Egyptian/Grecian but with a little je ne sais quoi of their own. I suspect plenty of dragon glyphs, scale effects and elaborate jewels and embellishments were also part of their attire. If the Valyrian Freehold was the most advanced and prolific civilisation, I can only imagine how exotic and wondrous their clothing would have been. I also imagine them to have practical riding/flying outfits too, light and finely made to optimise aerial travel. I've always loved the elaborate hairstyles on Vikings, and judging by how fancy the Ghiscari styles are, the Valyrians must have had beautiful headresses, tiaras and intricate braiding too. Wigs may have also been a part of their attire, based on nobility and rank like the Romans? And since Valyria lay on a peninsula, with a potentially arid/hot climate, the fabrics would have been very fine and and light too; silks and chiffons etc. I have this image in mind of long elaborate trains/capes behind dresses and gowns to replicate the wings of a dragon. My friend @naomimakesart has made a few concept sketches here and here which you could check out and I'm sure she'll have more coming soon too...👀 I've been hugely inspired too and hope to draw some Valyrian OCs some day! How I re-read ASOIAF

“Brown Flea, your worship.”

“Before that?”

“This one does not recall, your worship. Blue Toad, perhaps. Or Blue Worm.”

“Tell her all their names are such,” Kraznys commanded the girl. “It reminds them that by themselves they are vermin. The name disks are thrown in an empty cask at duty’s end, and each dawn plucked up again at random.”

Cyvasse, the game was called. It had come to the Planky Town on a trading galley from Volantis, and the orphans had spread it up and down the Greenblood. The Dornish court was mad for it. Ser Arys just found it maddening. There were ten different pieces, each with its own attributes and powers, and the board would change from game to game, depending on how the players arrayed their home squares.

“Just so. Opening your eyes is all that is needing. The heart lies and the head Plays tricks with us, but the eyes see true. Look with your eyes. Hear with your ears. Taste with your mouth. Smell with your nose. Feel with your skin. Then comes the thinking, afterward, and in that way knowing the truth.”

 I am no longer surprised that GRRM takes decades to write. Everything is so incredibly deliberate. You have a re-telling of the same story from every imaginable angle, a part of it in every chapter, clues as to which name means what in wholly different books. You have to identify who is what, the particular story based on signal words (queer, Myrish (lace), sea-green, willowy, sly, stone, dog, anything in italics...) which you have to learn slowly over time. But when you do, you get the entire story told to you, all at once. I'm still at the very beginnging, BUT I am pretty certain I figured out a major secret. I'm working on presenting it properly.

Let's say, that out-of-nowhere thing on the show about memory and stories is actually pretty major. The show just didn't do the things justice it was trying to smuggle in.

The pit fighter Steelskin has "intricate tattoos in green and black" that allegedly makes his skin like steel. It made me think of Dragonbinder's valyrian glyphs, valyrian steel armor, and that Ghis and Valyria fought long ago. Could Steelskin be tattooing himself because the ghiscari remember the valyrian soldiers having those glyphs on their bodies (even tho it was their armor not their skin) or am I overthinking a very minor character?

It’s entirely possible that the runes are a relic of a previous magical era, or simply imitations of something that worked in the past. The Royces have magic bronze armor that supposedly has runes of protection, so it’s not like this concept is unknown. But I doubt Steelskin’s tattoos do anything aside from look neat.

also it's interesting to me that yezzan zo qaggaz, the noble slaver of yunkai, uses valyrian glyphs to mark his slaves in adwd even though in asos we see that the ghiscari (at least in astapor) use ghiscari glyphs for marking the unsullied. it could be nothing, but if it's intentional it's quite interesting. maybe it means that the two scripts are used side by side in different contexts, with nobles expected to know both valyrian and ghiscari writing. or it could be that astapori keeps to the ghiscari script more than yunkai. or it could indicate that yezzan is not as married to the ghiscari way as other nobles (consistent with other characterizations in the text that describe yezzan as one of the people opposing war against daenerys and being one of the "good slavers" by tyrion, if there even can be such a thing). any which way i thought it was interesting

This is a reference for a bronze coin; I imagine the Ghiscari bronze discs given to the Unsullied are similar texturally, except plainer, unadorned.

Ghiscari script was difficult for me to get the feel for. Braavosi was straightforward because it was a Venice parallel so I drew from Italian manuscript letter fonts. Valyrian writing was inspired by dragon talons, its strokes curved and diagonal and wicked. Ghis is harder; its language is said to be growling and dissonant, but how should that look in script form? Was it fair to use that description of a region that is thoroughly exoticized through the eyes of Daenerys, Quentyn (I think it was Gerris Drinkwater in his POV who started calling all Ghiscari as Harzoo), and Barristan? Egypt is the closest analog to Ghis, but doing an Egyptian hieroglyphs knockoff felt boring also tbh.

One thing I try to do while making these scripts is not only to draw from the text and from real-world inspirations, but to be in conversation with fantasy conventions while making scripts--Tolkien and beyond--much like George does with fantasy conventions during storywriting. So I'd be interested to see what fictional scripts I can draw inspiration from. I tried going for a curved and elegant look, like the way that the Ghiscari like to portray themselves (my people were raising cities while yours were fucking sheep, etc), and as a a way to contrast against the brutality of their actual reign. I'm still mulling over the ideal look for Ghiscari glyphs. If anyone actually reads these things Id love to hear your thoughts.
