".... what was that?" (izo is distracted.. @ reiter)
Unprompted Asks || Always Accepting
“And here I thought following an order was the only thing you’re having trouble with…” The major paused and took a puff of her smoke. Surely, she had made herself clear with her instructions, not one wasted word-- unlike her servant’s actions that bordered unnecessary when he was thrown in the heat of things. “…apparently, even your hearing needs to be calibrated.”
However, she wasn’t blind. In her line of work, observation was paramount. The first instance that she allows her guard to falter, it could be the end-- and in her case, any kind of blunder was unacceptable, for the sake of that cause that she’s fighting for at least. Taking a seat, Reiter would put some distance between them, taking of her peaked cap and setting it on the wooden desk.
Tumblr media
“If you have enough time to be distracted by what your groin tells you, then I assume you’re perfectly capable of sticking to your mission.” She said, pouring herself a glass of whiskey. She had two command seals left. Having to use it on anything non-nonsensical would be a waste. "Do I make myself clear, Assassin?"

Towards the end of the Edo and leading into the Meiji period, superstition had it that samurai would avoid camellias due to the way their petals would, rather than scatter, fall all at once—reminiscent of a beheading.
HEYYYYY HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Here's my piece for @fatedtime's TYPE-MOON Body Horror Zine. This was my first time working on a zine, but I had a lot of fun! Everyone did some incredible work for it and I super super recommend you check it out if you can. <3
Originally I was going to do something more spoopy and headless horseman-ish to lean into the Ghost of Tosa thing, but then I remembered that particular bit of camellia symbolism and I made myself sad and now we have this. I am nothing but exceedingly normal about Okada Izou at all times (lying)

Day 2 of Servanttober is Second Ascension
I always thought this ascension was creepy but that’s kind of the vibe its meant to go for. It actually feels like ‘Oh hell, that guy is gonna kill me where the hell did he come from-‘ really cementing the “Ghost of Tosa” title.

Tumblr Holy Grail War: Wave 6 - Day 1 (Team Assassin)
Tumblr media
To use a Noble Phantasm presents a risk, which is revealing a Servant's True Name.
You feel it begin to crumble, the protective magic that stopped the utterance of the name 'Okada Izou' from reaching the opponents ears with meaning, as the magical energy around Izou began to surge.
There was no grand transformation. No drastic change in Assassin's own physicality. Of course, that would be unnecessary for an Assassin. But the bloodlust is tangible in the air, filled with bitter iron as one hand rests on his blade.
The people of Japan feared him. Strangers. Enemies. Even those that this Servant once considered 'friends' knew the damage that he could inflict, and so feared him just as much as the others. To call him a 'fool' would be to deflect, for he held the swordwork of a genius.
Scores will be settled. Such is decreed by the Ghost of Tosa.
"…Well, who are we disposin' of?"
[Team Assassin has elected to use Okada Izou's Noble Phantasm with one Command Spell! They gain +10% to their next combat poll!]
Anti-Class Bonuses:
+2% against Caster, +1% against Rider
Skills:
Man-Slayer (A) - When fighting a Servant that possesses a wound, gain a +3% boost. When fighting a Servant that possesses 2 wounds, gain +5% instead.
Presence Concealment (B) - When 'playing defensively', cannot be attacked by ANY Servant outside of Archer or Caster.
Swordplay as Swift and Powerful as a Falcon (A) - When going up against another Servant 1-on-1, gain +7% to final combat poll results instead of +5%, and reduce their combat poll results by 3%.
Izou has [1] wound!
Okada Izou's Noble Phantasm:
Settlement Sword (-) - Inflicts 2 'wounds' rather than just one. If the gap between scores is more than 50%, the attack serves as an 'instant kill'. Due to the unique nature of this Noble Phantasm, it only takes 1 Command Seal to activate, instead of all three. The boost from the Command Spells is reduced to only +10%, rather than +20%.

Saori remember naught but the sensation of blood spreading at her paws - the feeling of a hand upon her head between her ears and the softest of voices call out; Ko. She remembers the awe in the surrounding gasping beings, as she felt stone crumble from her fur making her pelt no longer leaden and heavy. Trapped would be a word to use, but it didn’t make sense since they chose to become statues to lie in wait for their next Master.
Now found - her Spirit form released by a blood oath and sacrifice of a beloved family dog, the Wisdom holder eased herself to the dog’s corpse. Taking it for her own and reshaping it to her breed. Thus - when the light and smoke cleared from the gathering of Onmyōji under the ▇▇▇▇▇▇ Clan Name, she found herself staring at only one of them… This one - the Chosen Blood - had her bead - her name on his tongue and now his vision shared with her own. This was the one that summoned her from her lengthy sleep.
The moment they locked eyes - and the being lowered to a knee - Saori’s form moved with ease to greet him with her nose to the back of his palm. Tail wagging with delight upon the smell of old blood - this was a strong clan and would be stronger in the future. “Master.” It was the first word to be uttered between them, and it was all that it took for the rest of her life here to be involved in ▇▇▇▇▇▇'s history.
Saori’s Wisdom bead gave her the IQ and understanding of world matters quickly, to take on stories of the humans of the ▇▇▇▇▇▇ Clan, to understand that war still happens but much more secretive. Thus, in her sphere of information, she took it upon herself to ask of the Clan Head - He, who she was bound to by soul and name - told him of her siblings.
The Hakkenden / Hakkenshi of Legends.
They were not just a story of Warriors in times of battle and children games to distract them from Warring states. But real Inu-yasha that protected a sacred person or place. Their beads were the symbol of their loyalty - larger in the past but became smaller to match the present times of everything they were.
Tumblr media
The first bead, Devotion - also written as 'wisdom' - was placed upon the wrist of the ▇▇▇▇▇▇'s Clan’s head- and with its power - he was able to find answers to what he sees and heard in passing. To look beneath the underneath - to pull apart layers of lies or half-truths and find their real meanings.
Wisdom - holds the talent to see through lies of man. Whilst Saori - at his side, took upon the form of a pure white Hokkaido-inu - she stood regal in her white coat and with eyes akin to a ghost - ever silent - ever watchful.
Tumblr media
From those years onward, Saori aided the clan head and his successors - a single heir, to claim another statue of her brother and sisters.
After Devotion, came Benevolence - Akinori a spitfire Akita.
Michinori of Gratitude was found within the fourth heads reign - A Shikoku-ken.
Shiori of Knowledge, was donated out of honour from a defeated clan - A Kishu-ken.
Kahori ( Duty ), Kazunori ( Brotherhood ) and Masanori ( Faith ) were all found thanks to Shiori’s memory. A Kai ken, Shiba Inu and Tosa.
The last of their band - the leader of a leaderless group — Kiyonori ( Loyalty ). He is yet to be found - locked away and the missing piece to the full formation barrier of the Hakkenden's true ability. A statue in waiting for his true Master to wake him from his slumber.
Tumblr media
The Hakkenden CAN NOT be seen without their permission - as they are spirits / Inu-yasha, they are non-visible to those without Onmyōji lineage. The ▇▇▇▇▇▇ Clan, is one of the oldest Clans to have a Generational contract of Blood with the Hakkenshi. The first to seal this was Saori, and it continues now with Kiyonori.
The Canines are visible however when granted the permission to be so by their Master. BUT - they are not of human guise, but their pure canine forms. Kai Ken, Akita, Shiba Inu - these dogs roam the halls of the ▇▇▇▇▇▇ Clan Home with no muzzle nor leash but true freedom.
That being said, they can and will mess around with the ▇▇▇▇▇▇ Clansmen, showing their shadows on the walls or barking in the dark halls. Their Master may have to scold the pups regularly when they get a little too rowdy.
The Hakkenshi have a Barrier Formation made by the Onmyōji Clan heads at the time of Saori’s behest. This formation grew stronger and stronger with each canine statue released how it grew weaker over time as it was incomplete.
With Kiyonori’s sealed state, the Formation is still incomplete and won't be amplified by EIGHT as all pillars are yet to be resurrected. This barrier stops, repels and denounces yokai from entering the ▇▇▇▇▇▇ Clan grounds. It can also remove impurities from corrupted souls making many humans faint if they are unable to withstand the sensation.
The Hakkenshi show their human forms when their Master desires it to be shared, they are a wide range of age, shape and size. Much like their canine forms they are beautiful and dangerous - as they all have weaponry styles of destruction. All of them different from one another as they have formed their own love for weaponry selected over time.

The Ghost of Asakura Togo by Utagawa Kuniyoshi
Roberts' "Growing up Manly: Male Samurai Childhood in Late Edo-Era Tosa" yields an unexpected mention of depression which I've filed away in my "to write about later" folder for some time.
Here's that passage, spacing and annotations mine.
[Sasaki] Takayuki's father had greater trouble with his own emotions. He blamed himself for causing his brother's suicide, and became sleepless, visiting the brother's grave nightly. The following year his father became suicidal and slashed his face with a blade. Young Takayuki had to run to the neighbors to ask for help to prevent his father from killing himself.
Takayuki, who had been adopted into the family as an infant, was only 6 years old at the time this happened.
Ultimately the relatives built a cage in the house to keep him in until he recovered.
This sounds very cruel by modern standards, and certainly could be if the family were poor caretakers or had little interest in providing care for their confined relative, but it was a common way for families of the Edo period to deal with a relative suffering from mental health problems, an elderly family member with dementia who might wander, or commonly a problematic teenage son (like Katsu Kaishu's father, Katsu Kokichi).
In a samurai household, cage would have referred to an enclosed space that was either a room in which the doors had been replaced with wooden bars, or a smaller area built into a larger room, and confining a relative required a process of official permissions and inspections.
Outdated terminology for mental illnesses aside, in "Seeing Cages: Home Confinement in Early Twentieth Century Japan", Yumi Kim writes:
The earliest known record of home confinement for those considered mad dates to the mid-1700s. Historians Itahara Kazuko and Kuwabara Haruo argue that Edo households chose home confinement only for members with senior status in the family, namely parents, grandparents, uncles, and heirs. ... The few extant records of early modern laws and provisions concerning the insane indicate that at least five different groups of people were involved in the process of legally confining a mentally disturbed person: the family, relatives, the five-household group, local officials, and the city or district magistrate. At times a physician's diagnosis was also required."
You can read the rest of the paper here if you're interested in the subject, although it focuses primarily on home confinement from the Taisho era (1912-1926) onward.
Let's get back to Sasaki Takayuki's father, whose confinement put a strain on family finances since he was not carrying out his duties and therefore not receiving any pay, forcing the family to sell of "all weapons and armor" except an heirloom set belonging to his grandfather, and even that had to be sold eventually to make ends meet.
Takayuki's father was deemed better after a year. The family let him out of his cage and he returned to performing his duties. He nevertheless remained an extremely sensitive and difficult person, often so depressed that he could hardly do anything.
It didn't help that a few years later, when Takayuki was a young teenager, the family lost two young children, a 7-month-old girl and a 3-day-old boy, which "sent his generally difficult father into a long period of deep depression".
Takayuki writes about how often he became anxious about his father and the family on this account, but nevertheless said that despite his own status as an adopted son, his father “loved and cared for me deeply. His difficulties were because of his illness."

From left to right: Akagi, Kaga, Shōkaku, Zuikaku, USS Enterprise, and USS Hornet
Akagi was originally designed as an Amagi-class battlecruiser. However, due to the Washington Naval Treaty, the Imperial Japanese Navy had to convert the two ships into aircraft carriers. Amagi was critically damaged in the 1923 Tokyo Earthquake, and was scrapped. Akagi would go on to serve as the flagship for the Attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, before being sunk at the Battle of Midway in 1942.
Kaga was originally a Tosa-class battleship, who fate became ambiguous with the Washington Naval Treaty (her sister ship, Tosa, was completed as a target ship). With the scrapping of Amagi, it was decided to complete her as an aircraft carrier. She also sank at Midway.
Shōkaku and Zuikaku were built in the late 1930s, and took part in the Attack on Pearl Harbor, the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Guadalcanal Campaign, the Battle of Santa Cruz, and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Shōkaku would sink due to damage inflicted by the submarine USS Cavella, while Zuikaku was sunk by carrier based bombers at the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
USS Enterprise was a Yorktown-class carrier, that went on to become the most decorated American ship in World War II, serving in the entire Pacific Theater. The Japanese claimed sinking her on three occasions, leading to her being called ‘the Grey Ghost’. Though she was decommissioned in 1947, the name continues on in the form of the first nuclear-powered carrier, and a planned Gerald Ford-class carrier.
USS Hornet was also a Yorktown-class carrier, best known for carrying the B-25 bombers used in the Doolittle Raid. She sank during the Guadalcanal campaign.

Artist: Kawanabe Kyōsai 河鍋暁斎 (1831-1889) Title: Kyōsai hyakki gadan 暁斎百鬼画談 (1889) Kyōsai’s Pictures of One Hundred Demons Publisher: Kaishinrō Medium: Woodblock printed book (gajōsō / orihon, accordion-style binding), ink and color on paper. image source: The Met and The Arthur Tress Collection at Kislak Center, University of Pennsylvania Libraries
Kyōsai’s Hyakki gadan features many, or “one hundred,” ghosts (yōkai 妖怪) and monsters (bakemono 化け物). The yōkai are a class of supernatural monsters, spirits and demons in Japanese folklore. In addition to the folklore in Kyōsai’s Hyakki Gadan the history of the narrative is also an important element to Kyōsai’s work. This popular topic has many precedents, including the many illustrated books by Toriyama Sekien from the eightteenth century, with one of the earliest extant examples the painting by Tosa Mitsunobu from the 1500s.
The topic of these spectral figures was also part of the tradition of telling ghost stories, particularly enjoyed during the summer months. On some occasions, people would gather at dusk and tell ghost stories to each other, extinguishing a candle after each story would be completed. As each candle was blown out, it was thought that a yōkai would appear in the room. This is illustrated in Hyakki Gadan in the image where a man dressed in black is telling a scary tale to a group of people . Soon after the book shows a parade of yōkai and bakemono entering, shown moving across the page from the right to the left. At the end, the monsters run from the rising sun back to the underworld. For Kyōsai, the story is clearly about these monsters and the relationship they have with people. There is little to no background in the images. Thus, it pulls the reader into the “floating world.” This is a dream space, a place for stories, and a lack of background is disorienting yet places the reader into the appropriate space for the story to take place. This place is somewhere in the world of dreams, and the light at the end seems to wake the reader out of this world. (source of text: University of Pennsylvania Libraries)
