Daredevil (Animal Companion Archetype)
If you’ve owned pets in your life, you are probably had at least one that had more enthusiasm than sense. Animals that get the zoomies and just love running around, with no fear of the danger.
The daredevil archetype for companions draws upon that, as well as atheletic training, to give your companion creature the flavor and mechanics of a bold and deftly agile creature capable of surprising speed and agility to give them an edge in combat.
However, while early on many might be impulsive, with time, these companions can be trained to be precise and careful even when moving at top speed, as we’ll see below.
As you might imagine, the boldness and practiced deftness of these companions gives them a knack for agile maneuvers, ducking and rolling to avoid foes and performing more traditional acts of agility.
They also prove extremely agile in motion, letting them better avoid attacks made at them while moving, and even potentially attacking during the middle of a move
So hyperactive are they that daredevils react quickly to keep an eye on all foes, and cannot be flanked normally.
A simple archetype, but one best applied to high-dex, very mobile companion options, such as those that fly or are built for running and moving. As such, bulkier companions will not get as much out of this archetype, nor will the majority of plant companions or otherwise slow creatures. If hit and run tactics are what you’re looking for, go for it. Just remember you won’t be multiattacking, sharing spells, or benefitting from the defensive power of the devotion ability.
While I referenced many such companions having a natural predisposition to agility, it is also possible to train such a beast into this state. In fact, in nations where the creature in question is bred and trained for sporting events, either as hunters, or for agility demonstrations.
Sporting sea green skin unlike any seen in other dolphins, the Water Lady dolphins are said to have been bred originally by an oceanid queen, where their keeping spread to the mortal races of the waves. Now, many merfolk who boast such companions are regarded as the envy of their peers.
The protector of Mistview Marsh does not seem imposing at first glance, a humble halfling hermit, but underestimating her is very dangerous, for her giant dragonfly companion, Shimmer, strikes like a bright blue bolt of lightning from the mist, rarely ever missing.
Surprisingly limber despite being made of wood, Willowbeam is a juvenile treant with an unusual penchant for hasty movement and acrobatic movements. The elders of his grove have decided to send him out to apprentice with a druid, hoping the nature mage might teach the young sapling patience, or barring that, guide him to the role of level-headedness purely by being more rambunctious than him.

Well. Last time I think I didn't add the image, so I maybe looked a little wacky?
But here is the image.
HERE is the image description
A young, pale woman with long, blond hair and blue eyes stands on a dirt road. She is wearing a modest blue dress, with a yellow apron and a white shirt with puffy sleeves. She is wearing worn, brown boots, and her hair is tied back with a white handkerchief.
She is holding a rope and blushing.
The rope is tied around the neck of a giant brown and white grasshopper the artist has tried to paint like a cow, with a marked lack of success.
In front of the young lady is a pseudo-velociraptor, with the colors of an Altsteirer rooster.
The dino is looking up curiously at a giant blue and white dragonfly, which is roughly the size of an elephant.
Upon the back of the dragonfly, sitting on a baroque saddle of sorts, a young, dark skinned girl with black hair in braids sits, smiling at and saluting the girl walking the grasshopper. The girl on the dragon fly is dressed in an olive flight suit, of sorts.
I imagine she is a courier, or messenger.
She's a little cheeky.
OKAY! I love you!

What are a few species of dragonfly which you find particularly interesting/noteworthy/aesthetically unique or impressive?
My favorites are the crimson and violet dropwings just because they’re so pretty! Here’s a crimson dropwing, and the violet looks similar:

Honorable mention to the Halloween pennant because it’s pretty and I like the name:

And the giant petaltail because it’s the biggest living species:

Tbh I don’t know enough about their individual behavior to be able to pick one species out for something interesting it does!
