“The entire point of doing this at Guantanamo is to apply the machinery of the post-9/11 state to this latest version of the Enemy. It is to entrench in the public mind a conflation of migration and terrorism.

"THE THING TO UNDERSTAND—the thing that can be difficult to convey to people who've never been to Guantanamo—is that abuse at Guantanamo is guaranteed.

"Guantanamo is a black hole. It is difficult for the outside world to get to Guantanamo, even more than most U.S. military bases. You can't fly to a civilian airport nearby, rent a car, and, if base access wasn't already arranged in advance, wait at a nearby motel while your request gets worked out. There is no civilian airport or seaport nearby, only Cuban territory. Just travelling to Guantanamo requires pre-approval from the Pentagon.

"Accordingly, there will be very few outside monitors as the cages fill back up. What happens inside will take a long time to filter out. The command atmosphere, it seems obvious, will not be one that rewards treating the people inside as human beings. Everyone who reported from Guantanamo can tell you that the military controls information at Guantanamo very tightly—I was much freer to report on military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan than I ever was at Guantanamo—and I expect that to be a feature of the migrant camps. When the gut-wrenching stories eventually emerge from Gitmo, they will be vigorously denied by the Pentagon and DHS.

"They will call the people sent to Guantanamo the worst of the worst. Some of them will indeed turn out to be frightening, violent people. But all of them, the innocent and guilty alike, will experience inhumanity, degradation and the anxiety of being caged for unknown periods of time. Many of them will certainly be children. Most of them will have wanted nothing more than to live in a rich, safe country, rather than somewhere likely destabilized in some fashion and in recent memory by the United States. More of them will keep coming as climate change intensifies, and so the Guantanamo migrant cages will expand and expand."

the people at Gitmo are, much of the time, held without trial and subjected to "enhanced integration techniques" (torture) to attempt to extract information that many of the accused may not even have in the first place. Many of those people are not "war criminals," a fair number of them are innocent civilians, and even if they had been tried and convicted, their treatment would be illegal if it were on US soil for how cruel and unusual it is. Do not pretend that anything happening there has ever been okay.

"A fair number of" who, exactly? The 780 that it held at its maximum capacity? Or the 15 who resided there at the end of Biden's administration?

Everything that you said about Guantanamo Bay is 100% correct. But I don't think it's very relevant.

I am not defending the continued use of Guantanamo Bay under Obama and Biden. But I do think that we should acknowledge that both presidents reduced the number of detainees held there over the course of their presidencies. It's likely that the number would have decreased even further under a Harris presidency.

Before this year, the Guantanamo Bay prison was dying a slow death at the hands of several poison pills meant to kill it. It absolutely sucks this didn't happen in 2009 when Obama promised it would. But on its previous course, the facility was doomed to be emptied.

Under Donald Trump, it is slated to be filled up nearly 40 times as high as it was at its maximum capacity.

Focusing on the Democrats not doing enough to completely close it down instantly, and instead just slowly closing it down... It's beside the point to what is actually happening right now.

I am sick of the blame game that points the fingers to Democrats because they were too slow at fighting injustice, in order to distract from the people who are actually perpetuating and causing the injustices.

The man who wanted Adolf Hitler's generals is creating a concentration camp at a facility infamous for torturing inmates, where media won't be allowed to see the human rights abuses that take place there, and it's going to be used to detain people captured on US soil without a trial.

This is a nightmare scenario that is magnitudes worse than Guantano Bay was even during the Bush era.

Showtime slated “The Guantanamo Candidate,” a 30 minute-long episode of its Vice documentary series, for May 28.

The episode opens with a shot of the outside the US prison complex at the southern tip of Cuba, where Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis served as a lawyer from March 2006 to January 2007.

Vice reporters had secured on camera interviews with a former detainee, Mansoor Adayfi, and a guard at the prison, staff sergeant Joe Hickman. Both said they remembered seeing DeSantis at the prison during a controversial detainee hunger strike. The Vice crew traveled to Guantanamo Bay to attempt to try to speak to military staff, and made several attempts to ask DeSantis about the allegations directly, eventually confronting him at a press conference in Israel, according to a detailed description provided to Semafor.

But Showtime viewers who turned on their televisions May 28 never saw the episode. (They were treated to a re-run of the scripted drama Yellowjackets.)

Showtime and Vice cited “scheduling” in a statement after The Hollywood Reporter noticed the missing episode.

But in fact, two people familiar with the incident said, the Paramount-owned cable channel ditched the DeSantis episode over fears of the political consequences. One person briefed on the decision told Semafor that the company’s Washington lobbyist, DeDe Lea, raised concerns about the piece.

Oh no! Imagine a world where innocent people are detained in Guantanamo Bay, in inhumane conditions, without legal representation. It’s truly unthinkable and never happened before!

So you're still ignoring that Obama and Biden didn't send anyone new to Gitmo?

That both worked throughout their administrations to transfer prisoners and reduce the number of inmates?

That on day 1 of his Presidency, Obama issued an executive order banning torture of the prisoners?

That Obama managed to reduce the number of prisoners from the 200s when he came in to 41 when he left office?

That this was in spite of heavy Republican congressional opposition, that passed rules banning money being used to transfer prisoners to the US or countries they viewed as sponsors of terrorism? (Which prevented a lot of detainees from being sent to their home countries.)

That Joe Biden, by the time he left office, further reduced the number of detainees in Gitmo down to only 15 despite facing the same congressional restrictions from Republicans as Obama?

You don't like that the Democrat Presidents didn't do quite enough to free the people detained at Gitmo by the Bush Administration? You don't like that they didn't do enough to close the facility down? Neither do I.

But if you are looking at Obama and Biden actively working through their administrations to empty out Gitmo, even as slowly as they were... and then you look at Trump who ceased this process in his first term (which is why Biden started his term with roughly the same number of detainees as Obama ended his with,) and has promised to fill Gitmo with 30,000 people, nearly 40 times as much as it held at its highest capacity... and your conclusion is "both sides are the same because people were technically being held in Gitmo during all of these administrations," I genuinely don't know what to tell you.

I simply wish you the best life someone with your complete lack of ability for critical thinking or understanding of nuance can conceivably have.

Meanwhile, I hope that people who do possess even a shred of rationality are terrified that Trump is turning the facility that was infamous for torture under the last Republican President, which had been reduced to a population of only 15 thanks to the effort of the last two Democrat administrations, into a concentration camp for immigrants.
