the people at Gitmo are, much of the time, held without trial and subjected to "enhanced integration techniques" (torture) to attempt to extract information that many of the accused may not even have in the first place. Many of those people are not "war criminals," a fair number of them are innocent civilians, and even if they had been tried and convicted, their treatment would be illegal if it were on US soil for how cruel and unusual it is. Do not pretend that anything happening there has ever been okay.
"A fair number of" who, exactly? The 780 that it held at its maximum capacity? Or the 15 who resided there at the end of Biden's administration?
Everything that you said about Guantanamo Bay is 100% correct. But I don't think it's very relevant.
I am not defending the continued use of Guantanamo Bay under Obama and Biden. But I do think that we should acknowledge that both presidents reduced the number of detainees held there over the course of their presidencies. It's likely that the number would have decreased even further under a Harris presidency.
Before this year, the Guantanamo Bay prison was dying a slow death at the hands of several poison pills meant to kill it. It absolutely sucks this didn't happen in 2009 when Obama promised it would. But on its previous course, the facility was doomed to be emptied.
Under Donald Trump, it is slated to be filled up nearly 40 times as high as it was at its maximum capacity.
Focusing on the Democrats not doing enough to completely close it down instantly, and instead just slowly closing it down... It's beside the point to what is actually happening right now.
I am sick of the blame game that points the fingers to Democrats because they were too slow at fighting injustice, in order to distract from the people who are actually perpetuating and causing the injustices.
The man who wanted Adolf Hitler's generals is creating a concentration camp at a facility infamous for torturing inmates, where media won't be allowed to see the human rights abuses that take place there, and it's going to be used to detain people captured on US soil without a trial.
This is a nightmare scenario that is magnitudes worse than Guantano Bay was even during the Bush era.

It would be a marvelous thing if Cuba waited until the camp was full and then invaded and released everyone and gave them Cuban passports.

The military detention facility at Guantánamo Bay is a glaring, longstanding stain on the human rights record of the United States.

After Obama tried to shut Guantanamo Bay down, Trump came in and expanded it.
Does anyone find that strange? 🤔

Feels like this post should be updated that as of February 5, 2025 they sent the first flight of 10 alleged "high threat" undocumented immigrants to Camp 6 at Guantanamo. The ACLU and other orgs are fighting to get more information on these people who've apparently been cut off from any communication or legal counsel.
Tumblr media
A reminder to the "the American government wouldn't..." crowd. They have. They have made their own internment camps before. They have rounded up innocent citizens and immigrants before. The victims of which are still alive to this day and trying to share their stories with the world, they have been trying to warn us for a long time. George Takei (as seen above) is a famous example of this. He has written about his experiences time and time again, even publishing a book talking about his time in these camps. He may be famous now, but at the time he was just another kid forced from his home. To this day he still firmly dedicates himself to trying to educate and inform people, trying to spread awareness with his platform. The American Government can and will do terrible things. Do not let anyone convince you otherwise.

feels obligatory to point out that the 'terrorists' that got tracked/killed turned out to be random civilians (who committed the unforgivable sin of having darker skin) way too often.

“You mean Peter Thiel, the guy who literally named his master surveillance company [Palantir] after a magical device used by a dark wizard and a literal devil to spy on the free people of earth and their corrupt leadership, was working to install a dipshit fall guy who would basically blow the door open so he could get access to all our information to manipulate, blackmail, or imprison anyone they don’t like? Checks out honestly.”
Trump was the dipshit Trojan Horse of fascist dreams.
Trump betrays MAGA and builds surveillance state. The tyranny of 2A lore is Palantir.

Kind of amazing that you are still blaming third party and undecided voters for the democrat's electoral failure- a group which, had they unanimously voted democrat, would not have changed the outcome of the election- but you seem remarkably averse to blaming the democrats for running an overtly shitty campaign that rested on policies like genocide and putting brown people in concentration camps at the border
Let’s look at a case study: Michigan is a key swing state that was lost by 80,000 votes (third party votes totaled 100,000) in large part due to aggressive (Republican funded) campaigns in Dearborn and surrounding areas emphasizing the foreign policy failures of the Biden administration. This was designed to convince people to stay home and apparently it worked because turnout in Michigan was down 4%.
If you, like the Uncommited movement, fell for it and contributed to it, knowing the alternative, you are a little bit responsible. The fact you think the Dems ran on concentration camps proves you fell for the opposition’s propaganda, and now, because you think Kamala was campaigning on concentration camps so you didn’t vote for her, migrants are getting sent to Gitmo, a prison synonymous with torture in the American lexicon. Because someone convinced you Kamala was running on concentration camps.
You can absolutely criticize how the Dems ran their campaigns but if you only do it by lying and/or parroting Republican talking points/misinformation, then it’s pretty obvious this is just post-hoc justification for your bad decision.

When the Trump administration announced a hazy plan in January to begin sending some 30,000 people pegged for deportation to Guantánamo Bay, the first thought that came to my mind was a closet-sized press room at the Pentagon where I once sat nearly 10 years ago, straining to hear the distant voice of a prisoner begging for his release through crackling phone lines.
The prisoner, who had a long history of mental illness, was Mohammad al-Qahtani, one of the first people the Bush administration detained at the prison in Cuba and someone the government said narrowly missed being the 20th hijacker on Sept. 11. He was also the only person the government ever formally acknowledged was tortured at Gitmo. He was released in 2022 and sent back to his home country of Saudi Arabia for mental health treatment.
Even with Pentagon officials having set up access for a literal handful of reporters to hear him clearly, we could not. We were told it was a common occurrence and this is just how it is when you’re trying to access Gitmo from afar. We were lucky, I heard, that the connection worked at all and we should be grateful for good weather that kept lines open, shoddy as they were.
So, when a lawsuit seeking to stop a forced deportation to Guantánamo by a group of 10 migrants came across my desk this week — none of whom appear to be terrorists but have been flagged by the Trump administration as “the worst of the worst” for alleged criminal gang behavior — I thought back to al-Qahtani.
Were these people like him, either in their alleged crimes or their circumstances? Would their experiences mirror his? Would they be tortured? Would they lack consistent, reliable access to lawyers? Would they too be consigned to pleading for their freedom with few to no witnesses to report out what is happening to them?
Many of those detained are now being held in facilities in Texas, Arizona and Virginia, having come to the U.S. seeking asylum with their families. They don’t contest being removed, but their lawsuit challenges where they are potentially being removed to. Their lawyers say longstanding immigration laws mean no immigrant detained by the government can be shipped off to Guantánamo.
Gitmo has a long history of alleged abuse of inmates, including both physical and mental torture. And as I read the lawsuit filed this week, it was the words “punishment chair” that leapt off the page.
Immigrants already sent to Gitmo by the Trump administration have told their lawyers that guards are allegedly withholding water as punishment, the suit notes. They allege that when they speak up about the poor conditions or treatment, some people have been tied to a chair, as punishment, for hours. One man claimed a guard broke his hand. Others, like al-Qahtani years ago, became suicidal or tried to self-harm, the lawsuit notes.
With so many lawsuits involving the administration flooding the zone, a herculean effort to keep a handle on what the government is doing and to whom is required. But for the migrants staring down the possibility of detention at Guantánamo Bay — and not just these 10 individuals, but the tens of thousands that the Trump administration has said it intends to send there — time is of the essence.
There are only literal days left until these 10 individuals are shipped off to Gitmo barring court intervention. It’s a world where they, and whatever happens to them, are mostly, if not entirely, hidden from the public’s view.
