This beautiful poem is one way to express how glad I am for my work. It is a privilege to help people in this life and to have learned skills and [more importantly] ways of being and living that taught me the value of helping other people. It is almost 50 years for me having graduated an unusual college. In that space I was taught and nurtured by many extraordinary beings. It was truly an education of both heart and mind.  After college the learning and the teachers continued.  They continue all the way up to this present day.  I’ve been reflecting on the singular people who have been my teachers over the years. I hope I have given back some small portion of what I have received.
I Tell You (excerpt) I could not predict the fullness of the day. How it was enough to stand alone without help in the green yard at dawn. How two geese would spin out of the ochre sun opening my spine, curling my head up to the sky in an arc I took for granted. And the lilac bush by the red brick wall flooding the air with its purple weight of beauty? How it made my body swoon, brought my arms to reach for it without even thinking. * In class today a Dutch woman split in two by a stroke - one branch of her body a petrified silence, walked leaning on her husband to the treatment table while we the unimpaired looked on with envy. How he dignified her wobble, beheld her deformation, untied her shoe, removed the brace that stakes her weaknesses. How he cradled her down in his arms to the table smoothing her hair as if they were alone in their bed. I tell you - his smile would have made you weep. * At twilight I visit my garden where the peonies are about to burst. Some days there will be more flowers than the vase can hold. ~ Susan Glassmeyer ~ (The Incomplete Litany of Untold Stories) :: [Echoes of Panhala]

Mystery Bridge Nr. 217: Three Phantom Bridges along James Road near Maybee, Michigan
Photo by Fresh Tr on Pexels.com Satolli Glassmeyer made an interesting discovery in Michigan. Consisting of one Luten Arch Bridge and two culverts- all made in concrete- the bridges along James Road near Maylee used to carry a road that has long since been abandoned. All of them are over a century old and have decayed beyond repair. Some information about the bridge, together with the…

sugar sk*-*lls unleash Star Time
TLDR: if you like thick synths, go immerse yourself in this new YK release.
---
I've been listening to sugar sk*-*lls for a long time. I recall a performance years ago at the, now closed, Mercy Lounge where Ben Marcantel went on stage, plugged in a Gameboy and proceeded to blast the audience with his chiptune compositions. I've never seen anyone do that in Nashville before or after. I loved it.
Over the years, sugar sk-lls has morphed and explored other sounds; Marcantel was crafting AI compositions back in 2019, way before it was cool! Looking through the back catalog of works, you'll encounter a number of collaborations. Matt Glassmeyer of Lambchop and Lindsay Johns of Nudity appear on "tethers." Kyle Hamlett and Ryan Norris of Coupler appear on "Right Hand Hand." G Seth West, Tye Bellar and Tom Senter of Financier appear on "Gini Rising" back in 2016.
That Financier collaboration grew into something more concrete. G Seth West and Tye Bellar started working with Marcantel more and more;* eventually forming a new Voltron version of sugar sk-lls.
As the story goes, they met up every weekend and crafted dozens of songs; scrapping entire compositions, merging ideas together, exploring bigger and bolder sounds. They invited Cortney Tidwell to perform on a song and realized the intended track was not good enough - West remarking "we had a diamond on a paper plate." They kept going, pushing their work further into something they loved to hear.
All of those efforts culminated into Star Time, the album that is released today. It's the biggest record from sugar sk-lls yet. Not only because it's a collaboration of three minds but the production is thicker, more immersive and more inviting of repeated listens. Most importantly, and possibly most overlooked, it's also an incredibly emotional record. Every track features vocoder leading the way, which can be easily written off as just another instrument or, worse, a gimmick. But pay attention to the lyrics, there are incredibly poignant, introspective and moving moments from start to finish.
I'm incredibly proud to be involved with the release. I've been a fan of sugar sk-lls for so long and now I get to help spread the love to more folks. It's a record that requires your attention to fully appreciate but will still yield enjoyment even if you're blasting it as a dance track in the background. It contains multitudes.
Pick up the 2xCassette Rave Case and digital on Bandcamp or Stream and Share wherever you like to listen.

Meadownoise - Threeve
The third album from Meadownoise, Threeve, is now available on all streaming platforms. Released in co-ordination with Pet’s Musical Park.
The record is filled with strange missives from another world. Thee songs can be challenging, melancholy, heartwarming and mesmerizing; often all at once. To be perfectly frank, it’s unlike anything I’ve released on yk Records.
I’ve been a fan of Meadownoise since 2013 when he released It’s 4:00 and stayed equally transfixed with the follow-up Dark Digest in 2014. It’s been six years since his last record and the growth and change captured here is impossible to express.
Matt Glassmeyer, the man behind the name, has a long history with jazz, progressive pop outfits (he was a member of Lambchop) and ambient compositions - all of which come together here in a beautifully unique way.
Give it a listen top to bottom. Start to finish. Sit with it. Walk around with it. Read the lyrics and realize they’re not just madness but deeply personal stories masked in warbles and chopped up transmissions.
There are many more videos coming from this album, so you’ll be hearing about it more in the coming weeks but do yourself a favor and dive into it now.

Testing for Emerging Contaminants
To learn more about contaminants of emerging concern, testing is required. In this post, I will divulge more about some of the testing methods and how more has been found about CECs.
Initial Water Sample Collections
At predetermined sites (in this specific study, wastewater treatment plants were being studied), water was collected in clean bottles for a one-time sample. (1) Bottles contained dechlorination chemicals and preservatives to analyze the emerging contaminant concentration against regulated levels. (1)
Method 1: USGS Direct Injection
In this method, the term “direct injection” is used because the water sample is directly injected into a chromatograph then a spectrometer. (2) A chromatograph is an instrument that is used to separate mixtures, like contaminants from a water sample. (3) Once the mixture is separated a spectrometer, an instrument used to measure spectra or light properties of different physical objects. (4) By using this technique, the atomic properties of various pharmaceuticals were found and differentiated, therefore identifying them in the water samples. (2) This method of sampling was used to test for 110 of the 174 contaminants; the contaminants specifically tested for were pharmaceuticals and personal care products. (1)
Method 2:  Purge-and-Trap for Aqueous Samples
The Purge-and-Trap methodology includes either keeping a certain temperature heating an aqueous solution then putting an inert gas through it to release the contaminants into a separate chamber where they are next transferred to a chromatographic chamber. (5) This method is used for aqueous solutions. This method is also validated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), meaning the method has been peer reviewed and deemed sufficient to be published for general use. (6)
Method 3: Test Strips
A testing method available for more of the average consumer for use in field testing, test strips involve using a signified test strip then dipping it into a water sample container or directly into the source then measuring a specific contaminant’s concentration by comparing the strip’s new color to a chart of specified concentrations correlated to its respective color. (7) This test very much resembles a pH test, just with a variable. A downside to this method is it isn’t as accurate as a lab method would be, but it gives a general idea about a specific water’s quality.
Method 4: Color Disk Kits
Another field test kit that isn’t as accurate but is still reputable is the color disk kit test. To conduct this, the user puts some of a water sample in a tube then adds either a powder or liquid reagent to the sample. After this, the tube is placed in a box that lists specific concentrations and their respective color. These values are used to match the sample’s concentration. (7) This test requires some wait time but still gives a good idea about water quality in a given area.
Method 5: Handheld Field Instruments
One more test method that can be conducted with little experience in water testing is by using specific handheld instruments. Although these tools are more intricate, delicate, and less user friendly, it is still a viable method that yields more accurate results than a test strip or color disk kit. To complete this test, a handheld device such as digital meters, colorimeters, and photometers are utilized with a given water sample. (7) These devices also require batteries and calibration along with being more costly, all of which make them less accessible.
Testing... 1,2,3,... Testing
Although I listed only 5 methods for testing water contamination, there are many more for different kinds of water testing and testing other substances. The U.S. EPA has a page dedicated to sharing their validated testing methods and studied conducted using such methods. (6) As more work is done in fields such as toxicology and environmental analysis, new methods are being constructed and tested. The field continues to grow as new questions arise.
Solutions for Water Pollution
Home testing kits are available online and in stores to see what your local water quality is. Sometimes free water quality tests are offered through local, state, and federal operations. If possible, test your water quality. If it meets water standards, how was this possible. If it is below expectations, how can you improve the quality?

Your Responses To ‘Mapping The Obstacles To Innovation In Law’
Tumblr media
In my column here two weeks ago, I asked for readers’ help in crowdsourcing the barriers to innovation in law. I presented a list of the barriers I see and asked for your thoughts on what should be added or changed.
One reader, Mary Juetten, answered that call with a column of her own here on Above the Law, offering a point-by-point response to the obstacles I outlined. I also received a number of thoughtful emails, several quite detailed. I have invited a couple of those emailers to turn their messages into blog posts and, if they do, to run them on my blog at Lawsitesblog.com. I also plan to summarize the email responses in a separate post.
Today, I have collected the responses I received on Twitter. I am posting them in chronological order, starting with the oldest, and with no commentary of my own, although in some cases I commented to the posts on Twitter. I have probably missed a couple of you who commented, and, for that, I apologize.
No one will admit it but #IOLTA hampers innovation. Treating all $s as earned in receipt gives lawyers $s up front to hire & invest in efficiency. But no one will get rid of IOLTA because it pays for legal aid. Why not impose a tax instead?
— carolynelefant (@carolynelefant) July 24, 2018
+ 1 on the lack of affordable tech for solo and small firm lawyers who work with modest-means clients. Please keep us in the loop as you move forward.
— Community.lawyer (@LawyerCommunity) July 24, 2018
Go Bob! Pls add data standardization and data capture. As courts add e-filing and other e-functioanlity they need standard protocols that will allow analysis court-court, state-state, and eventually with PACER.
— Linda Tvrdy (@latvrdy) July 24, 2018
Here’s a link to a post by LTSF member, Bob Ambrogi, in which Bob solicits feedback on impediments to legal innovation. As you'll see, Bob's doing important work, here so please consider responding. https://t.co/3F6un4ghS8 #legaltech @bobambrogi
— Legal Tech StartUp Focus (@LegalTechStrtUp) July 24, 2018
Here’s the problem. Let’s say I want to offer a divorce package that costs $3000 every 6 months. If earned on receipt (and now trust account/IOLTA), I can sell 20 packages & pay $60k to hire a junior associate to work those files.
— carolynelefant (@carolynelefant) July 24, 2018
But if $s are earned on completion, I don’t get my $60k until 6 months later and I am stuck doing 20 low ball cases myself and scrambling to keep up.
— carolynelefant (@carolynelefant) July 24, 2018
I guess it’s not IOLTA per se but trust account requirements. Which are onerous. But they are being reinforced by tech rather than eliminated because trust account tech is low hanging fruit.
— carolynelefant (@carolynelefant) July 24, 2018
Help @bobambrogi crowdsource obstacles to innovation in law. https://t.co/gIHI5SVwgQ // I don't know if this is an obstacle, but we don't seem to know what innovation is or what success would look like.
— Sarah Glassmeyer (@sglassmeyer) July 24, 2018
Nice job on this list @bobambrogi! We would add the following – Law schools and the legal profession more generally need to value and recruit people with skill sets that have not been traditionally valued in the past. Entrepreneurship is one example. https://t.co/cyQQ0WeKzC
— JEP Chicago (@JEP_Chicago) July 24, 2018
It's the prohibition on accepting payment for our own services in advance of providing them. Not actually to do with trust funds. And yes, it is one of the problems. Also it's stupid, because it treats us as less trustworthy than the rest of the world.
— Jason Morris (@RoundTableLaw) July 24, 2018
Yes you have articulated the problem better than I have.
— carolynelefant (@carolynelefant) July 24, 2018
Definitely a lack of #iterative #design where #innovation in courts are concerned. Too many focus on introducing an all singing all dancing "solution" instead of working in an #agile way. A/B testing of smaller #features would produce more sustainable long term change
— Clocktimizer (@Clocktimizer) July 24, 2018
This is great. I’ve got one: ethics rules and opinions are not nimble enough to keep up with innovation. Remember when everyone was freaked out about the cloud and whether lawyers could ever trust their docs to it? (I know still some hesitance..)
— Rebecca Fordon (@theFordon) July 24, 2018
there are two different issues in "lack of ABS" that I think should be teased out. First, inability to raise capital to build things by selling equity. Second, lack of incentive to improve long-term performance of firm due to lack of a market for partner's equity shares.
— Jason Morris (@RoundTableLaw) July 24, 2018
The second one is often overlooked. Even if capital was available by other means, and it may well be, partners are not motivated to make the firm wealthy after their own departure. They can't turn that future value into present value when they leave. That's a separate problem.
— Jason Morris (@RoundTableLaw) July 24, 2018
I would also add overly proscriptive regulations that set out "how" instead of "what an why", making innovation in internal matters a regulatory breach.
— Jason Morris (@RoundTableLaw) July 24, 2018
But the big one is that everyone assumes that innovation means a different way of doing something already being done, when what we need is people to do the myriad things that aren't. Innovation must include entirely new services provided by entirely different people.
— Jason Morris (@RoundTableLaw) July 24, 2018
There is a faiure to start from "what do people need", and a tendency to start from "what do lawyers do?" Regulators need to listen to the dog that isn't barking, and ask if the existing regulations make certain categories of services impossible to provide, and as a resut, get.
— Jason Morris (@RoundTableLaw) July 24, 2018
Well observed, best way to avoid these is to whack a healthy serving of client into the system
— Maziar Jamnejad (@MaziarJamnejad) July 24, 2018
I would add on to that – openness/accessibility of data. All the new analytics tools coming out, based on PACER data—How much sooner would we have seen them if each co hadn’t had to pay millions to obtain PACER docs (same true for case law, often statutes)
— Rebecca Fordon (@theFordon) July 24, 2018
Oh, and access to data on non-trial legal outcomes, plus standardized data as to factors being considered by decision-makers would help immensely to increase the scope of what it is possible to automate. Data infrastructure.
— Jason Morris (@RoundTableLaw) July 24, 2018
This is a great list! One additional, overarching regulatory obstacle: Self-governance in the form of lawyers regulating themselves and their competitors, with oversight (if any) usually provided by former (and often future) lawyers on state supreme courts.
— Responsive Law (@ResponsiveLaw) July 24, 2018
Focus on offering discrete #divorce services on a flat rate basis that have a defined scope and outcome so that you can bill each client regularly and earn more. Have associates specialize in various aspects of the journey. Most people can't afford the full service model.
— David Michaels (@davidmichaels) July 24, 2018
While it is implicit in many of your bullet points, I believe that we all just need to come out and say it explicitly: there is no single, monolithic "legal" market that we can address with tech. The various segments within legal are far too distinct.
— Michael Simon (@RoninMikeSimon) July 24, 2018
@bobambrogi At the very least, let's make clear your point on "too many solutions are aimed at big firms only" comes down to the very distinct markets for "law for big corporations" vs. "law for people." The 1st has an efficiency problem. The 2nd has an effectiveness problem. https://t.co/5yUH5JOyvB
— Michael Simon (@RoninMikeSimon) July 24, 2018
That works too. But it works better if you can lock in work at low cost & use cash paid up front to hire a lower cost employee to service those clients
— carolynelefant (@carolynelefant) July 24, 2018
@bobambrogi – might be helpful to talk about how technology can improve existing processes, Hire An Esquire is using technology to connect firms that need help with contract attorneys. https://t.co/1EYpLMasbX
— HireAnEsquire (@HireAnEsquire) July 25, 2018
By referencing someone smarter, Drucker: Innovation is (1) the development of new wealth- producing resources or (2) the enhancement of existing resources with greater potential for creating wealth; & adding the PSF piece: always, in service to clients. https://t.co/y65vBlJHCq
— Anusia Gillespie (@anusiagillespie) July 26, 2018
See Attachment A, @wihender’s landscape report and message that, “the legal profession is at an inflection point that requires action by regulators,” and predicting that CA will lead. Appendix A is good too — visual of all the #legaltech companies in queue. https://t.co/tPuVrvcaBx
— Anusia Gillespie (@anusiagillespie) July 24, 2018
@wihender and @bobambrogi — what happens in the private sector, exactly, if and when Rule 5.4 changes? Are the floodgates suddenly open for the PWCs of the world and #legaltech companies? Are they only open in the states that adopt? How would this all unfold?
