Hello, I'm not sure if you're aware, but tumblr is going to start helping midjourney gather data for their AI. You're one of the artists I follow here pretty actively and I wanted to warn you to maybe start nighshading your art before posting it here so it doesn't get swept up!
I've seen a couple of posts about it. Feeling disappointed but not that surprised. Also not excited about having to start nightshading/glazing my pieces but if there isn't going to be any serious regulations regarding data scraping and ai "art", there aren't a lot of choices.
Thank you for taking the time to warn me just in case, it was very thoughtful of you!

I wanted to draw Oberon, but couldn't think of anything to actually draw him doing. As I was brainstorming on that, I thought "what could he even be doing? ...be on a picnic??" and could not shake the thought. And so.

I'd love to know more about layering glazes!! I've taken ceramic classes in school and as you can imagine we were limited to single glazes to stop kids from mixing things together with too-early second coats.
Ooohhh get ready for another ramble because I am SO into glaze layering (tho also very early on in the journey...now that I have a kiln, I'll have way more capacity for tossing in some test tiles alongside the proper work, so hopefully I'm only getting nerdier in this aspect of the craft!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A couple of beasts featuring cool surface effects via layering glazes!
The main thing that got me properly into glaze layering was the fact that both Mayco & Amaco provide online resources for layering their glazes, which provided me with a foundation to start from when deciding what glazes to layer.
Mayco's glaze layering resource
Amaco's Glaze layering resource
With few exceptions, all of my layered glazes have been based on suggestions from those sites. Of course, most look slightly different from the reference photos provided due to firing temp/clay type, but it's amazing to have something to work from!
The other crucial thing that comes along with glaze layering (& just glazing in general!) is keeping a record of your choices. I've got a two-pronged system going now where I write everything down in a notebook while working, then take proper photos when the pieces are done & put it in an app on my phone called ClayLab.
This allows me to more easily organize my glaze results & reference them in a more streamlined way than my initial system of 'read tragically messy notes in notebook while scrolling through my overloaded & disorganized phone photo album'. Sometimes apps DO make things easier!
Here are some photos of my not-at-all-unhinged notebook scrawlings & a screenshot of the ClayLab app:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The app lets you apply all kinds of info to each entry & then filter by all those categories (eg. type of vessel/creature, glaze name, clay type, etc). I really do recommend it if you want a non-stressful way of keeping track of your glazing choices!
So yeah!! I hope this was a little bit helpful? I'll be talking a bit more about my personal favourite glazes/layered glazes in a future ask, which I'll post soon!

Have you seen that new show on YouTube "The amazing digital circus?" (Or the pilot I mean)
Also, are you a fan of indie productions? Or more specifically surrealist ones like TADC or ENA?

heard of it

I honestly don't even understand what that anon was even trying to say because they said:
"Can YOU make a character ai bot."
Like make a oc that's an ai bot?
Make a character in ai?
Just ??????
Oh shit I didn't even pick up on that.
They wanted ME to make an AI bot of my OC?!
Wtf. Wtf? Why would you ever do that? Why would you go to someone and ask them to sacrifice their character into a machine, ask them to become just a prompt generator, ask them to put a piece of their soul that they worked hard on and wanted to share with everyone into an unfeeling, heartless, spaghetti coded meat grinder just so you can have 'more' of that character?!
I'M GOING TO STRANGLE A COUCH!

Have you ever used a block button before?
Hm? Well, no, I never really felt the need to
A lot of people advise to block accounts who make you uncomfortable, whether it be their behavior, beliefs, what they post, etc. and they're right
It's just that I've never felt bothered enough to block people, that and there's something interesting about engaging with opinions that differ from mine, whether I like them or not

Machete and Vasco are so pomegranate-and-the-hand-that-slices coded. To me.
Pomegranates are seen as messy, bloody, inconvenient fruits. You slice or tear or bite and in return for your effort you come away underwhelmed, disgusted, and stained too deep to wash. The consumption of a pomegranate is a violent act of defilement, for both the fruit and the eater.
But that is because most do not understand how to open a pomegranate. They have little patience for the precise carving. They see no point in coreing the fruit gently, no reason to be reverent as they pull the quarters apart. When done correctly, opening a pomegranate leaves little mess. Your fingers will still stain, your knife will still slick, but there will be no pool of crimson drowning both you and the fruit.
The seeds are only sweet to those who understand the merit of a light hand and intricate slicing. Why put in so much effort for a food so bitter and clearly armored against consumption? Surely it must not yearn to be eaten.

I just realised that Aegon’s line might not have actually ended, it did end with his children with Helaena and the history books. But in the series we were shown his bastard child and Ser Arryk presumed there would be many more. So if any of them survived and their descendants survived Aegon’s line could still exist in game of thrones but they would be part of the smallfolk
oh i love the idea of some random white haired families in the main line of asoiaf, just chilling in king’s landing. some of them like to bathe in really hot water and others have weird dreams they just ignore lol.
but i think most importantly, aegon’s impact on his world is more than just the children he had. he mirrors some great rulers who didn’t have children (or survived them all), like alexander the great or elizabeth the first. even characters like daeron the first and aemon the dragonknight never had children but they’re remembered often because of their actions. daenerys will probably never have children of her own but she will be remembered for centuries to come for her deeds and dragons.
like it or not, westeros was never the same after aegon the second, just like it never would be the same after aegon the first. he had the most striking dragon in westeros, and the closest bond with him. he wrote the laws of succession in blood (unfair as they were), he buried all his enemies, he died with a crown on his head.

How do y'all paint with glaze since it totally looks different before and after firing . Do you really just memorize a whole color palette??
So! There are two different substances with which you can 'paint' a piece of pottery: glaze and underglaze.*
An underglaze contains pigments that can stand up to the heat of a glaze firing (approx 2200ºF for a typical cone 6 firing!! HOT!!), but are less thick & do not melt in the same way as true glazes, so if you don't put a clear glaze on top of them, they fire mostly matte, like the outside of this finished mug --
Tumblr media
-- and underglazes also stay basically the same colour between when they're applied to the clay and when they're fired (most darken a bit, especially if you put clear glaze overtop, and some get duller, especially darker greens). You can also mix underglazes like they're paint while you're applying them - I literally use a paint palette to mix my colours.
Here's a photo of some of the underglazes I used to paint the above sphinx -- you can see how similar they are to the final result:
Tumblr media
Then you have glazes which are applied much more thickly and in layers, and when you fire them form a hard, generally shiny (tho there are satin & matte finish glazes), glass-like surface. I'm pretty sure that the pigments they use are different from those in underglazes, but I'm only just starting to get into glaze chemistry (I buy my glazes in pre-mixed pints from companies like Amaco & Mayco).
Unlike underglazes, glazes look COMPLETELY different between when you apply them & when you get them out of the kiln. Here are a couple of examples, unfired on the left & fired on the right:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love to experiment with both underglazes & glazes in my decoration, as both produce such different results. Underglaze decoration is a more controlled method, where you have a general idea of what the piece will look like from painting to final, great for the outsides of my mugs & some of my creatures (eg my bird ladies).
Tumblr media
On the other hand, the insides of the mugs & some other, simpler creatures I make play really well with the uncertainty & alchemy of glazes (& glaze layering!! I've got a Q about this later on, so will be talking more about that soon):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conclusion to this, uhhh, novella, underglaze & glaze are like cousins who get along really well but also have their own special talents! One is steady & straightforward (underglaze), while the other is maybe a secret wizard & can be a temperamental butthead (dang glazes)?!
*to note: there are other methods as well, like slip, which can be dyed with mason stains, and underglaze pencils & probably other things I don't even know about, but for now let's just discuss the two 'painty' ones
