Kinda wild to use the testimony of a known liar, jester and unreliable witness such as Mushroom to attack Aegon, when Mushroom also claimed that Daemon had Rhaenyra pleasure him when she was 8, a little girl. He also claimed to have advances with Rhaenyra himself. So if you use Mushroom’s testimony, bring up his whole story, be consistent :)

stillness is the move

One year after the true end, Sunny returns to Faraway Town.  A late addition to #anotherSTweek! ~11k words of wholesome sunkel silliness. (i’ve had this series drafted for a while, but everything feels bad & i just. didn’t have it in me to post. but i do think there’s value in taking respite in escapism, so... sunkels, come get ur serotonin! i'll be dropping an update every day for the next week.)

Day 1: Waiting

There’s only four days until Sunny comes home. To Kel, it feels more like four years. 

It’s been a whole month since Kel last made the trek out to Sunny’s new place in the Glittering Harbor. (Of course he’d like to visit more! But it’s kind of a haul. You have to take a bus to a train and then transfer to a different train, and then walk three-quarters of a mile just to get on another bus. Unless you’re Aubrey, in which case you bike the whole way from the station while acting like everyone else is a total sucker for dropping a buck fifty in bus fare.) 

Unfortunately, Kel was never very good at waiting. He used up a whole life’s worth of patience in the four years he spent moping around Sunny’s porch, talking to a door like a total loser. 

Fortunately, Sunny’s getting better at texting. 

Kel whips out his phone and checks the forecast for the millionth time today. It still looks good. Clear skies and temps in the high 80s, with humidity that’ll make it feel like the low 90s. Which sounds good to Kel! But Sunny never liked the heat. 

…It’ll probably be fine? They’ll just have to spend his whole visit splashing around in the lake. 

Kel taps out a few quick texts.

Not even a minute later, his phone buzzes. It’s Sunny.

Warmth builds in Kel’s chest. Every time Sunny takes the time to look his way, it makes Kel feel ten feet tall. He stifles a whoop and picks up his pace, loping down the sidewalk in long, bounding strides before hooking a right toward home. 

A year ago, if you tried to tell Kel that Sunny was gonna start answering his texts—not just eventually, but promptly!—Kel would’ve laughed in your face. Even six months ago, it would’ve been hard to believe. To be totally honest, for a few weeks after Sunny moved away, it looked like he was just gonna disappear again. 

But Sunny’s trying. He’s trying really hard!! He’s careful with other people’s feelings in a way he never used to be. He looks at the people around him and actually tries to figure out what they want, even if he is still kinda bad at it. Probably ‘cause he used to be such a brat. 

…Okay, so maybe he’s still kind of a brat. But that’s part of his charm! And it definitely feels different than it used to. It’s like Sunny’s… a little less careless, or something. More thoughtful. Less selfish. And every so often, he’ll open his mouth and say something so incisive—so unnervingly emotionally attuned—that he almost sounds like Mari.

Aw, man. Kel misses him so bad.

He can’t help himself. As soon as he’s scrambled upstairs and into his room, he pulls up AIM and hits Video Call.

Sunny picks up on the third ring. That’s new, too. Sunny never used to pick up when anyone called. He looks a little flushed, like the call took him by surprise. 

Kel beams at him. Sunny parries with a disapproving glare. 

“I know!!!” Kel laughs. It’s true. They both know that Sunny hates phone calls. “I’ll just be a minute, I swear. I’m just too hyped to type, y’know? And I guess I kinda wanted to hear your voice.”

Sunny quirks an eyebrow. 

“Pfff. Okay, but you know what I mean, though.” 

Sunny tilts his head, conceding the point. 

“And it’s been, like, a million years!!!!”

The obvious lie finally pries Sunny’s mouth open. “...Four weeks.”

“Since we came to see you, sure. But since you came here? C’mon, dude! That’s way bigger!!!”

Sunny’s mouth tugs down. Oh, Kel realizes. He’s nervous. 

“Not in, like, a scary way!” he rushes to explain. “Just, like… you know. I know the Harbor is home now, too. But this is, like, home home. This is where it all happened!!”

Sunny’s face darkens. 

Shit. “Not like— I just mean!! All the times we swam in the lake, or… snuck out to go to Hobbeez, or got our butts kicked for taking the last slice of watermelon. The good times, dude! This is where the magic happened!! We’re, like, getting the band back together!!”

Sunny takes a moment to consider that. “Basil said they’re closing Hobbeez.”

“Ugh, don’t remind me!” When Kel saw the notice, he was ready to set up a lemonade stand, or a petition or whatever. But Pedro said the sale had already gone through. It was up to the new owners to decide what to do with it. “Anyway, that’s all the more reason to get psyched! We gotta give it a proper goodbye!!”

“A viking funeral,” Sunny says sagely.

“Yeah!! Wait—no. We can’t set it on fire. Were you gonna set it on fire?”

Sunny shrugs one shoulder. 

“Pffww— Sunny!!! You can’t set the strip mall on fire!!! That’s where I get my groceries!!!”

“It’s not like it’s hard.”

“I don’t mean literally!! I just mean—” But that’s when he notices a familiar gleam in Sunny’s eye. That’s the one that means he’s laughing at you, not with you. “Sunnyyyyy!!!” Kel flops back on his bed. “You’re messing with me!!!”

Sunny grins wickedly. “Guess you’ll have to wait and see.”

I’m so sick of seeing comments like “the fact that they showed us dyana’s reaction 🥺🥺🥺” when talking about that one scene as though we should be happy that the writers decided to add sa to the story for nothing more than a cheap way to make the dance more digestible for the general audience. If you are going to adapt grrm’s work, don’t make it hilariously one sided simply because most people are incapable of recognizing that two sides can be flawed and sympathetic. People who I know and myself who have experienced sa are not impressed, especially when daemon’s sa of actual minors is not critised properly.

About Dyana, I think is terribly exploitative to add sa for a gratuitous purpose, that is: that we hate Aegon and TB forever has the high ground of ‘not supporting the 🍇pist’. The show also showed sa scenes for laughs (Alicent and Criston) and never properly addressed the trauma of those characters, and downright erased the characterization of Daemon as a ped0. Dyana is a character we can empathize with for a scene and will forget about it, the story is about her abuser and not about her, her suffering became a weapon. I’m so sorry for what happened to you, and if you ever need someone to talk my dms are opened. Hope you’re safe and healing.

Honestly, I bet Rhaenyra and the blacks got a nasty shock when people turned on them after B&C and the riots started.

omg why would a toddler being murdered in front of his mother and siblings would be mourned by the common people? 😭 rhaenyra said herself the opinions of the smallfolk don’t matter, so she would be soo surprised when they stand up for themselves, helaena and her children.

why did they have to make Aegon a rapist and in general so horrible in the show? was he like that as per the books?

Answering the second question first: the short answer is no. Aegon was a flawed man but nothing near like the sadist, abuser the show tell us (they can’t even show it properly) he is. The long answer below:

Aegon in the books was the average Westerosi man: he liked wine, he liked food and he liked women. It’s mentioned how he liked to ‘fondle’ the servants around him (which is nasty and shouldn’t be tolerated, especially bc the equivalent today is making gross comments to your employees), but all that is expected for how men are socialized in Westeros. In addition, Aegon had a good relationship with Alicent, Helaena and Aemond, and didn’t bully, abuse or rape them.

However, in the books there’s different sources for the characters, and Mushroom, a fool from Rhaenyra’s court, claims that Aegon was supposedly found with a 12 yo the morning after Viserys died, and he also liked to watch children fight in pits. Mind you, Mushroom isn’t a reliable source for the dance, is disregarded by the other sources and constantly makes stuff up to make things seem more spicy (he also claimed he had threesomes with Rhaenyra and Daemon, which ofc is a lie). He wasn’t even in King’s Landing the day Viserys died to begin with. Basically they picked and chose from every version and chose and maximized the rumors to get the worst version of Aegon as possible.

So for the first question: Fire and blood isn’t a story that sells well as it is. The societal climate right now is very involved in how the showrunners decided to make the show, and the story as it is (a pointless conflict between a family that shows how greed corrupts even the greatest dynasties) isn’t fit for today’s standards. The general public wants good vs bad and a hero to root for, and Aegon (a very flawed medieval man who fights for his claim based on medieval law) isn’t it. So it has to be Rhaenyra.

Rhaenyra is a woman who pushes for her claim to her father’s throne, and every other fantasy book would portray her as the maximum heroine of the story, but not f&b. Rhaenyra’s the hero the society wants tho, especially with the Daenerys fiasco of 2019. So she needs to be presented as the “better option”, the showrunners erase her flaws and maximize Aegon’s. It can’t be in any other way, as portraying Rhaenyra as unfit would cause backlash for portraying ‘women’ as incapable of ruling.

Ofc, if the story will be told as it actually happens, backlash will happen anyways (as it did with Daenerys), when the showrunners can’t keep hiding Nyra’s flaws any longer and the fans scream “character assassination!”. It’s also so funny that in trying to portray a more ‘nuanced’ and ‘feminist’ version of f&b they ended up making a more sexist and male-gaze show that even game of thrones was.

This isn’t even a question so sorry for the mini rant. I know I’m probably beating a dead horse but I hate when team black Stan’s say son for a son to defend blood and cheese. Son for a son would’ve been Aemond (him especially since he actually killed lucerys.), Aegon,or Daeron not Alicent’s six year old GRANDSON.

Hi bestie :)✨ I’m always here to rant why B&C is completely unjustified and an unforgivable crime under any circumstances. If Daemon really wanted Lucerys avenged he would’ve gone after Aemond, but didn’t bc Aemond can actually defend himself. If he wanted peace, taking Jaehaerys as a hostage would’ve easily made the Targtowers surrender and even hand over Aemond. Damn, even take Aegon if you’re in the mood. But he didn’t because he wanted his rival’s heir killed and to escalate conflict. Chaos is a ladder I guess.

Aegon had nothing to do with Lucerys’ death and Jaehaerys was completely innocent from any of his uncle’s feuds. Killing civilians is a crime, but a toddler? In front of his mother, grandmother and siblings? In the (presumed) safety of his home? That’s very different from killing a teenage messenger who was actively contributing in war and disabled his killer years before.

it seems like people miss the detail that Blood & Cheese tied and gagged Alicent and then strangled her bedmaid, killed Helaena's guards then that happened.. Young Jaehaerys was the main target, but Daemon took more lives that day too. He is a monster, I want to vomit every time they call him a hero and that he died for Rhaenyra's cause, when in fact, he abandoned her alone with her children and went to die a badass death. Aemond wasn't even the biggest threat to "Rhaenyra's cause" that was Daeron, especially after the first battle of Tumbleton that she lost two dragons for the greens, and the hightower army is far from small

I mean that’s the same people that idolizes Rhaenys for killing hundreds of people to have eye contact for a few minutes with Alicent. You can’t expect them to have empathy for the common people, they’re convinced they are descendants of Targaryens of some shit.

The idolization of Daemon is something even George falls for nonnie 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 he’s framed as a hero bc GRRM thinks he is. He��s not, and imo, both Aemond and him are the weakest links of their respective teams, both preferring to run away with a woman they loved and abandon their families in the most dire moment. The battle of the god’s eye is not meant to be a badass moment, it’s two selfish men dying to get written down in history.

And if I hear once more about how Daemon ‘died for Rhaenyra!’ and didn’t meant to abandon her in a city that rightfully hated her for a girl she envied and feared, I’ll riot. He preferred to face death instead of leaving Nettles and going back to his boring wife who desperately needed him. He knew he wouldn’t be able to handle Daeron so he settled for the next best thing: die a badass death instead of living to see his failure.

Team Black's fake sympathy towards Helaena and her children is disgusting. They said Helaena is such a sweet girl and deserves better. But only because they don't see her as a threat to their kween. Had Helaena spoken out loudly about her family concerns, I bet they would turn on her that instant. When B&C happens, sadly, we will again have to see their fake sympathy in "Oh poor Helaena and her children. They don't deserve that. Well, too bad they are from the green's side. Omg I hate this so much 🙄 especially those pesky hcs about ‘Helaena secretly supports her sister!’ She literally does not lol. The show erased her hand in convincing Aegon to send peace terms to Dragonstone, and how she was an active participant in getting the smallfolk’s support for the greens.

She loves her family, she loves her brothers, her mother, and most importantly, her children. Those children are Aegon’s blood! (fuck bastardy hcs) If he falls, they will fall too. And they were targeted for nothing more than cruelty and revenge.

She is likable for now when her sweet whimsical persona still isn’t fully on everything that’s happening around her. I can see people turning on her for mourning her baby and wanting justice for Jaehaerys. I can’t fathom how someone can read about a toddler killed in front of his baby siblings, mom and grandma and say ‘mmmm yeah, she deserved it’.

Hey bestie! The post I reblogged was to compare both Aegon’s parents, and how, realistically, Alicent wouldn’t be the one inducing him to rape servant girls left and right, she’s not a Cersei, she doesn’t excuse all her children’s actions, she does her best to raise them in her (very repressive) set of values and rape ofc doesn’t include that.

However, Viserys is a rapist, most importantly, he raped Aegon’s mother for years, starting when she was 15, and most probably Aegon saw some remnants of that abuse. If anything, it’s Viserys the parent that influenced rape tendencies (his eldest daughter is also a rapist, and she wasn’t raised by Alicent).

So if anyone calls Aegon a rapist, do it pragmatically. It was Viserys who realistically influenced that behavior. It doesn’t excuse the action (which to me isn’t canon as it has no basis on the og material and was merely added for shock value) but certainly calls out what kind of father was (or was not) y’all’s peaceful king.

I don’t blame Targaryen blood for the Targaryens being shit, I blame the Targaryen upbringing and the supremacy they practice. Some Targs who weren’t raised by Targs (Jon Snow) don’t show the shitty mindset most Targs do. The blood of his deadbeat rapist dad is there, but because of his upbringing he grew up to be a hero.

Yes nonnie, Westeros is plagued with classism and sexism. Why aren’t you making post about it, if it bothers you so much? Shame all houses who show disdain for women and subject them to rape and sex based violence, instead of only bringing up the issue when I bring up Targaryens.

In addition to all the classism and sexism shown by Westerosi nobility, you should add the exceptionalism, entitlement and incest practices that Targs subject women too, including the marriage of too young princesses such as Daella, Aemma, Rhaella, Daenerys, Helaena, Naerys, etc. Westeros may be bad, but Targs are worse.

Opinions on Daemon and Nettles?

oh they’re so funny and interesting to me. for starters, i think they had a romantic/sexual relationship and that he loved her, or at the very least cared a lot for her.

this is incredible for me because daemon is just the worst very-black-grey character ever without any redeeming qualities except maybe being a good warrior AND loving nettles. he took her in, cared for her (in a more “focused on needs” instead of “focused on flashiness”), protected her, risked his life for her and ultimately when she left him he decided life was no good anymore.

he’s the perfect example of the (wicked) prince falling for the commoner cinderella style, even more meaningful when nettles is the only black character in canon, and all of his other love interests are valyrian/valyrian looking (mysaria is not asian and laena is not black in the books. this impacts their characterization too). we just saw a glimpse of daemon being a semi-good person and maybe he could’ve been a little less self centered if he had been allowed to be with nettles. or maybe not. who knows.

as for netty, i think she was a girl who just wanted to survive and decided to take her chances and tame a dragon (both sheep stealer and daemon). maybe she loved him, maybe she cared for him, or maybe not. that doesn’t make her any less of a honest or good person in my opinion. she deserves all the care in the world she wasn’t granted, and while daemon “loved her” he still was in a relationship with a teenager.

and because her feelings and inner thoughts weren’t explored at all in f&b, it’s up to the readers (and hotd writers) to decide her feelings about daemon, always being mindful that this is a young girl who essentially couldn’t say no (she’s a commoner, he’s a prince) and it’s wrong to demonize her and characterize her as a home wrecker/whore as some characters in-universe do. if you ask me, i think she cared for him, and enjoyed his attention and affection. i’m glad that she got to live in peace and away from her wretched in-laws tho.
