Choosing and Choices…

I’ve been thinking about this for awhile now. It’s always kind of bothered me seeing it being stated that Lucas chose Riley (as Rucas fans like to gloat about and that is what’s published as in conclusion for the triangle in GMW’s Wikipedia page and the GMW Wikia).

But is that factually correct?…

This is where I get a bit stumped (I’m gonna use emojis because I found the farmer one and couldn’t help myself, plus the one I used for Maya looked like her).

Lucas 🧑‍🌾 has two options. Riley 👩🏻 or Maya 👱🏻‍♀️

But Maya 👱🏻‍♀️ quits the triangle.

👩🏻👱🏻‍♀️ - 👱🏻‍♀️ = 👩🏻

That leaves Riley as Lucas’ only option.

Can you really “choose” someone when they are the only option available to you?? That’s what stumps me.

Maya dropping out of triangle put Lucas in a really shitty situation, because now he had to be with Riley, there is no other alternative.

He could have chosen not to “choose” Riley, but by doing that it would show who he actually chose. Technically, yes, he chose her in this regard…

But the fact is the triangle was never concluded because he never chose between Riley and Maya.

Yeah, Lucas told Riley he chose her, but he had no other recourse but to word it way. After all that, he can’t just be like, “Hey Riley, Maya quit the triangle, so d’ya wanna catch a movie?”.

Isn’t this the actual canon? Am I looking too deeply at this whole thing or am I just losing my mind?

Also, don’t get me started on that fucking jellybean.

Ngl… after watching the season 2 finale of tsitp, now I realize that belly choosing Jeremiah must have been how Lucaya fans felt when Lucas chose riley from girl meets world 😂

I swear this love triangle is the same exact thing as the Rucas and Lucaya love triangle from girl meets world because of the ship wars 😂😂

traditional love triangle plots often treat love like a scarce resource that needs to be competed for with the other person as the prize when rly the characters’ happiness and love is not wholly incompatible with one anothers’.

the natural conclusion to like 90% of love triangle stories is all 3 people dating each other and yet it's not even considered a possible ending💥 so they have to pull out some incredibly lame way to take one party out of the equation even when it's the least interesting possible conclusion to a story

Secondly, yes. I think they were endgame. Obviously, the show was canceled, and we will never know for sure (even though I think it was confirmed by a writer somewhere), but the writers did too many foreshadowings and secret meanings between them for it not to be one of the endgame couples. I'm just sad we never got to see it, but in retrospect, it is a problematic show, and they did SO many things wrong.

The whole Rucaya triangle and how it was handled was a mess. I don't know if they could've delivered what we as fans were expecting of Riarkle. I look back now, and I shiver at the thought of how they would've handled Smackle.

And you know what? Even if they weren't planning on it being endgame/ruined it, WE know these characters and know where they were heading. Farkle and Riley find each other at some point. And maybe they break up, and it doesn't work, or maybe it works. Who knows. But they are for sure it for each other, the relationship that matters. I'm not that young anymore to believe you will find your soul mate in middle or high school.

But Farkle and Riley? They are friends for life.

The religion episode always comes to mind when I think of them, and of course, the Christmas one where Riley tells him she always wants to know who he is because she loves him. Keyword: always.

I could write paragraphs about Farkle and Riley dynamics in the third season alone, especially in the last episodes.

Going back to our roots here what’s your brutally honest opinion about lucaya and joshaya if you’re up for some throwbacks

this message physically aged me 45 years 😭

lucaya- like, it was obviously planned from the beginning, but here's the thing: their dynamic was tired as hell. you see it in every piece of media ever. they were BORING. also I just genuinely almost never liked lucas lmfao. there were a handful of lines throughout 3 seasons that got a laugh out of me- and it was always when he was playing the idiot or confused part, if they had just let him be the wannabe eric of the show it could have been amazing. as for maya, I definitely wasn't as attached to her as I was riley, she just kinda got on my nerves a bit, but Dear God Did She Deserve Better. the triangle was drawn out WAY too long. by the end of it both girls should have left lucas in the dust. we see the 'official' triangle plotline start on new years eve, and end in late september/early october. in no world should it have taken him that long, ESPECIALLY when he knew what a strain it was putting on the girls relationship. if he really cared he would have stepped back, like, literally, it is very very possible to have feelings for someone and not date them, oh my God. farkle had the girls fighting over him ONE time and was like 'hey no I love you guys too much to see you upset'. lucas friar you will always be hated<3

joshaya- I need to get this out of the way because I saw it so much: maya was not trying to date josh when she snuck into the college party. the college girls were not telling josh to date maya. one of josh's friends hits on maya and riley and maya said We Are In Eighth Grade. she's not delusional. the whole episode was how she wanted josh to stop ignoring her. there's subtext ladies!!! cory and topanga were practically raising maya since she was 5. even if it's not addressed too well on screen, you have to be aware that maya and josh have known each other practically their whole lives. considering how close josh is with cory, riley, and auggie, that tells us he saw the family on a regular basis growing up (he literally left his parents and took a train at like 4 in the morning just so cory could open his college letter with him). so josh and maya were likely good friends as children! what we see with his introduction to the show is he starts treating her more as a kid, as his niece's friend, and thinks her feelings are silly and she says No. I need you to take me seriously here. I don't want our friendship to change just because you're in college now. my feelings are not stupid and I want you to respect me. (also. side note. they never said josh's age in the show right?? because for him to start college when he did would make him older than he should have been based on the boy meets world timeline...like, I was kinda working under the assumption he skipped a grade or two in high school but everyone else was like Known Grown Man And Pedophile Josh Matthews Asked A Toddler To Go To The Movies As Friends lmfao). anyway. she asks him to respect her and he does!!! genuine shock and awe! lucas friar found dead in a ditch! lmao. their vague 'let's see how we feel in a few years' talk reminded me a lot of the cory/topanga yearbook quote scene, and they had great chemistry! it didn't feel like something I've seen a thousand times before. it's not like they promised to swear off dating and wait for her 18th birthday, she was basically dating zay by the end of the show. they just said 'we've known each other for a while, there's definitely something between us but this isn't the right time for us to explore it, so let's be friends like we used to' (see: what lucas should have done during the triangle). josh had a tiny bit of an edge to him, but with the dorky matthews heart, which tbh was exactly what maya wanted. I loved how maya acted around josh, it lead to some of her funniest and most open moments in the show. I loved how gentle josh was with her even when she was being annoying. I love a good childhood crush to actual lovers story! sue me! lmao I think if the show had gotten as many seasons as boy meets world they really could have been something special

I mean, tbf Max's absence was explained in season 3 premiere (but it was pretty dumb) and there's a good chance that a new cast may not have any relations to the BLOK dancers do it's not Armando Has a reason to mention him.

Find me in Paris or how not to give a proper send off to a character

Find me in Paris tells the story of Lena, a girl from 1905, who ends up in 2018 because of Time Travelling. She is hunt down by the Bureau an organization who is controlling Time Travelling and time travelers. Lena not being in her time period constitutes for the Bureau an offense. She is also chase by the time collectors, outlaws time travelers who do not respect the rules of the Bureau and who are also hunted by him. In the meantime, Lena is trying to be a ballerina in the Opera of Paris.

Find me in Paris is one of those shows that have an endearing charm to it that make overlook all his flaws. But there one aspect of the show that i dislike a lot : it's how in season 3 they end the storylines of 4 characters in a very disappointing maner. This, probably way to long, post will approach the way the show handle the departure of Max, Thea, Pinky and Clive.

I want to preface that i don't know and don't want know the behind the scene details which led to the departure of the actors/characters. The writers have to work with a minimal time frame to make those exit, since 3/4 leave in the second episode of the season. It's wasn't an easy task. But the way they chose to send off those 4 characters wasn't great . I will now discuss each of them separately to explain why it's doesn't work for me and why i'm even mad at the way they handled those characters.

Max : After be one of the main love interest of Lena for 2 season, Max vanish at the start of season 3, leaving behind only a letter (accompanied by a voice over). After being seriously injured in season 2, he leave the school because he can't be cured. He is the only one we don't see on screen, only a montage of some of his scenes after Lena read his letter. His dream of becoming a dancer is now out of reach. A very depressing end for someone who was until that point one of the main characters. Max is in weird position because if you had asked me before that who is gonna end up with Lena, i was sure it's will be him. I'm not even a big fan of Max and Lena's relationship mainly because at the start of the show they were both in a relationship with someone else. But Max was the best of Lena's love interests: Henry, her boyfriend at the start of the show, was very tiring at times and Nico, a Bureau agent's introduced in season 3 is an interesting concept but it didn't work (at least for me). And the weirdest thing was that before Max left, it was clear that they would end up together. Max's father is also still in the series even after his departure.

Thea : After be for two season my favorite character, Thea chose to stay in 1905 to focus on her career. Alright, she was in 1905 in the first half of Season 2 and wants to go back to that time. In addition, her encounters with the Bureau leave her very afraid. So it makes sense that she wants to leave behind all this time traveling stuff and focus on her career right ? It's not like season 2 spent a lot of time trying to bring Thea back into present time. And also show her altering history and Lena fuming seeing that. Its also don't make sense that no one declare her disparition because, unlike season 2 where Lena and Ines where alimenting her social media account, no one do it in season 3. Pinky said she is on tour and that's it. And above all, it does not fit with the personality of Thea who until now don't give in on nothing. At the end of season 2 she wanted to live both in present time and 1905. Settling for less, for only 1905, was out for her character. Later in the season Frank said that he miss her and to quote him "the tour is only a few more months" implying that he is waiting for her. But that's it (the show had another love story in store for him). The funniest thing about her exit is: since Thea isn't in her proper time period now she can be a target for the Bureau...

Pinky : After Ines's had her memory erased by the Bureau, Pinky chose to not time traveling anymore. Since season 1, their love story has been built and it was interesting because Pinky was one of the time collectors and Ines Lena's best friend. After Pinky lose, as he said, the only girl he ever love he quit in episode 2. During episode 10 Ines regain her memory. One episode later she have a exchange with Franck and both of them are sorry for the loss of their respective love interest. I find Ines answer's strange when Franck said that he is sorry about Pinky to what Ines said "not talking about it". For all we know Pinky is still in the present. Why Ines don't try to reach to him ? And mind you it's in the same conversation that Frank says that he miss Thea and is waiting for her return form the tour, what Ines acknowledge. ... then few episodes later they start to date each other. The worst thing is : there are pretty cute together and work pretty well as couple. If we ignore the fact that Frank's friend that he see as his brother is somewhere sad that the love of his life lost all memory of him...

Clive: In the seventh episode of the season Clive go to the present with Claudine. He leave her there and mention going back in time to ride the dinosaurs then pass the portal to never be seen again...AND I WAS MAD... In season 2 Clive is erased by the Bureau and it's a huge deal for Frank to get him back. Finally after almost a season the trio of the time collectors will be reunited again...for Pinky to leave. But I was still hopeful the first time i watched the show. We didn't have Clive for most season 2 but we will have him for season 3....until episode 7 i guess...And Frank never ask about time again...

So to resume, for all we know : Max had to give up his dream, Thea is stuck in 1905, Pinky is wandering sad and alone in the present (meanwhile his bff is dating the only girl he had ever love) and Clive could have been eat by a dinosaur.

What all of those characters send off have in common : they never got an actual ending of their story. The show end without giving us a proper closure. If we have to keep the same exit for all of them there a solution to give them and us closure. At the end of the show Lena overtake the bureau and form a new bureau with Frank and Nico. Why not having a character saying that there are searching for a time period where Max injury's is curable or saying that Max is now is the futur and follow a traitement. Or if we don't want to involve Max in time travel why don't we see his father talk about him and say he's fine. For Thea you can have Lena fuming seeing all the change that she curently making for dance's history and that she will send someone to take her back in the present. For Clive, Frank find his painting and that he become a famous peintor in the past (referring to the painting of the time collectors painted by Clive in season 2). And for Pinky....actually he is one of the most screw up by the show (Max too but not in the same way)... so someone (maybe Henry ? Pinky helps him in season 2 and I don't see Frank mentioning him and i can't think of someone else speaking about him) can say he is doing fine traveling the world in the present ?

All to say that never really mentioning them again after their departure of the show was very strange. At least we have Jeff mentioning time to time that he miss Max and Thea...But he is the only (Jeff MVP of Find me in Paris). Maybe i'm over dramatic (just a little). But I like this show and its characters. When I watch the show again I wonder if I should stop at the end of season 2, but it's not really an ending. So I'm watching season 3 and I'm pissed off at how they treated these characters.

okay so I actually watched ski lodge for the first time (well not the whole thing, just a bunch of scenes) because I had actually stopped watching the show sometime around Riley effectively convincing Maya that she had “lost herself”. and im so mad all over again because I thought I was being a little overkill and harsh earlier when I said that the writers just reduced all their characters to 2D tropes, but, um, that is literally what they did. all the interesting and complex dynamics in s2 gone. all the nuance stripped from the characters. Maya is literally just “likes danger and bad boy and breaking rules” and Lucas is literally just “morals and rule follower and Prince Charming esque.” the writers presented them as good boy + bad girl = incompatible. honestly, a big old YIKES to that. so much for the writers “loving the characters”... these aren’t even characters at this point. they’re caricatures. what was MJ thinking? I feel sad thinking about the wasted potential, especially when season 2 was really a lot about adding layers to the characters and their relationships. it’s pretty ironic that the season that was literally supposed to be about change saw all the characters revert back to the flat, static tropes they started out as

Lucas picked Maya in Triangle & here's why

First off, let's clarify something: Lucas 100% made up his mind between the two girls in Triangle. He told the parents “here's who I picked.” Not “here's what I've decided” or “here's what I want to do” or anything of the sort. The “who” pronoun matters here: Lucas picked someone. And if you ask me, he picked Maya.

Why? To start, watch the scene at the end of Upstate, when Maya and Riley come back. Specifically, watch Lucas. As Maya goes in for the shirt grab, he has a smirky, flirty look on his face. Is that the face of someone who's about to pick another girl over her?

Compare and contrast to the expression on his face after Maya effectively takes herself out of the equation (and kinda sorta tells him there's a possibility that she doesn't even like him after all). Lucas looks confused and upset. He asks her if that's what she wants. Again, not the actions of someone who was going to pick the other girl.

A lot of people bring this up, so I will too: Lucas talks to Katy about Maya's heart (no pun intended) and that she learned how to care about others from Katy. He refuses, for the first time ever, to even things out between Maya and Riley. A lot of Rucas fans said that he was just being nice to Katy to soften the blow to Maya, which…doesn't make any sense. Why would Lucas even bother doing that? Why does he really care what she thinks of him, unless he's picking Maya? (And again, why refuse to even things up to Cory and Topanga if he's going to pick their daughter? Hmmm…)

The biggest point I have to make is this: why, if he had picked Riley, did the triangle continue for a few more episodes? Why wouldn't he just say that he was going to pick Riley, regardless of the “Maya has been Riley” factor? Why would that even really matter to him if he wasn't leaning towards Maya in that moment?

We all know that Lucas eventually chooses Riley, and how he got from Maya to Riley will be another post for another day. But given his behaviour and actions in Triangle & Upstate, I think he chose Maya.

(I also have thoughts on why Rucas needed to happen in order for Lucaya and Riarkle to happen, but that's yet another topic for another time…)

Stuff I'd change about GMW

-Angela would not be vilified. She and Shawn would be married and she’d appear in the Christmas episode, pregnant with Shawn's child. Shawngela would have a great aunt-uncle/niece relationship with Riley & Maya would absolutely adore them.

-Katy would have a consistent character arc of trying to be a better mom to Maya instead of the bs where one minute, she’s the hardworking single mom who wants what’s best for her kid and the next, asks to pass Maya off to the Matthews in that episode I hate.

-No one in the gang would be str8. Everyone is bi as hell.

-Shawngela would adopt Maya in the finale

-Jack/Eric would be married because I say so. Maybe even have a kid.

-No “Maya is Riley” bs and just be DONE with that fucking triangle

-Do more with Zay and Smackle because I love them and they deserved better arcs with actual care. Especially Zay, like forget Lucaya not being endgame, how the FUCK did Zay end up single??
