good ending: Marisa becomes a youkai.

bad ending: Marisa has Reimu exorcize her or whatever, thus allowing ZUN to delay any resolution to this plot point indefinitely.

true ending: Not enough humans are actually afraid of Marisa, and in fact they hold her in a certain amount of awe. Thus, while Marisa losing her humanity is inevitable, she instead becomes a god. However, she's pretty dogshit at actually getting faith, but not bad enough that she stops being a god, so she's basically just like Minoriko (blesses your crops by working in the field and curses them by trampling it) and Shizuha (goes out and physically paints the leaves), and the majority of her power comes from the magic she knew as a human, it's just a bit easier to use now. Reimu's the one who becomes a youkai.

Hang on. Once the Youkai Expansion Project completely covers the world in Gensokyo ... will they still need the Spell Card rules? That seems like something that'd be less necessary, given, y'know, the whole point of overwriting the Outside World. Plus, World-Wide Gensokyo is bigger than just the one valley, so there's no chance of Breaking Everything by stretching your legs too far.

For that matter, when we have a whole planet's worth of Human Villages (enough humans to go around for all the youkai, in other words), it seems to me that there'd be no need for a "no hunting within the village" rule, either. And no real way to enforce it if they had it, unless there's one Hakurei Shrine for each village -- and with no Hakurei Barrier, there'd be precious little reason for them, either, unless i.e. God Reimu went out of her way to branch out and keep everything going. (Or the Moriyas beat her to it, of course. Or both! Great way to keep both of them relevant if you want to write something that takes place somewhere other than Nagano.)

I can see how Reimu hasn't added some of the recent gods she's found in the wild to her shrine, Hina's too fucked, Hecatia too influential, the Chicken has a job, Keiki would probably turn her into clay and then a enthusiastic shrine maiden etc and so on. You can see most aren't good fits.

But how come Reimu and Chimata haven't landed a sweet contract deal yet? The god needs a shrine that regularly has markets on it, and Reimu benefits from having an actual God with Blessings; They were made for each other.

your reimu tag is so good. every time I see it I mutter "oh thank god reimu's here" to myself. and breathe a sigh of relief

the funny thing is even though she's DEFINITELY up there she might not even be my absolute number 1 favorite touhou character. (it's probably orin because her enthusiasm for her job is infectious)

that being said, she is extremely good to see. logging on to the web and looking at pictures of her is always a nice thing to do.

whilst i'm on the topic of the hakurei god i do think that one of the big things we know about it - that it's supposedly angry about reimu not doing her job - is immediately countered by the fact that it's hijiri "i don't think you should fight youkai" byakuren saying it

See while I can and do conceptualize Yukari and Reimu's relationship as a species of yuri I can't imagine them being like... Lovers in a romantic relationship. I like instead to imagine Yukari having a tangled and immensely confused web of feelings toward Reimu, of nostalgia, of longing, of a certain kind of motherhood, of the pains of human feelıng scarred into her by a love she lost so long ago, and the knowledge of how unbelievably fragile and temporary her existence is, and I like to imagine Reimu being bewildered and mostly bemused but silently grateful for Yukari's (to her) inexplicable preoccupation with her.

For her part Yukari never opens up to Reimu I don’t think, I think that she’s content to hassle her, to covet her, to treasure her, while enjoying her bemused confusion at it all
