UC 48.10 - ULIP vs Goldsmiths

Goldsmiths had made one previous appearance on University Challenge before Monday evening, whereas The University of London Institute in Paris hadn’t made any, making this one of the most inexperienced first round matches in history (not counting when random Oxbridge colleges are paired against each other).

This meant that The Parisian’s appearance was the first on the show by an institution based outside of the UK (not surprising given that they are also the only one that is). Rather irritatingly their abbreviation is ULIP, when if they just decided to use the ‘the’ they could have been TULIP, though perhaps that would be better suited for a UoL Institute in Purmerend (the most highly populated settlement in the Netherlands beginning with P fyi), should they ever create one.

According to Paxman they are representing a hundred and twenty students, making them more than 3% of the total on offer. If Goldsmith had the same percentage then there’d be nearly three hundred of them, but I don’t know where they’d all sit.

Three of the Tulips introduce themselves in languages other than English, which takes a lot of gall, and their captain is while wearing a beret, which takes some Gaul too.

Goldsmiths Guha took the first starter with ‘Don Juan’, giving Paxman the opportunity to take part in one of his favourite pastimes – correcting the pronunciation of Don Juan. They won the next three starters too to lope out into an eighty point lead before ULIP could get on the board through Captain Alcock.

But it wouldn’t be the start of a stirring comeback for the French side, who had to sit back down for a while before getting any more points. Indeed they didn’t even manage to get the question on French playwrights, much to the disappointment of the question master who exclaimed ‘Zut Alors!’, to the amusement of the crowd.

They finally got some solid scoring on the go in the second picture round which required the identification of some sexy philosophers. And that’s not just me making some tenuous extrapolation of what the real question was, or simply adding the word ‘sexy’ to try and make this blog sexy by association. There was an actual question on University Challenge about sexy philosophers. Sexy philosophers. I’ll stop saying sexy philosophers now.

Despite the 20 points they got for this round ULIP didn’t manage a particularly high score overall, but as Paxman said at the end ‘they had a great sense of humour to take part in this’. Perhaps that’s a bit of a patronising way of saying it, but they were good fun, and congratulations to Goldsmith’s too, who march on to the second round very impressively.

Final Score: ULIP 55 – 180 Goldsmiths

Tuesday 5th May

PART 2

Harris has a pair of cashmere socks. Had? They still own them, but the socks are different now. I thought they’d missed when I picked them up from next to the laundry basket. Admittedly, it’s not like them to miss the laundry basket, but I just didn’t think. Into the pile of dirty jeans, underwear, t-shirts and turtlenecks, bundled and stuffed into the metal drum of the washing machine. Those navy and magenta cashmere socks came out looking more like kitten mittens. or baby socks. Harris forgave my mistake, and now they sit as the outcasts, the non-worn but still fond-of-them kind of socks.

PASS or PASSion?

First of all i want to congratulate and thanks to my tutor who is absolutely one of most passionate people I’ve seen, that really inspired me to look at bunch of cables with increasing curiosity. I wish all of you tutors that will simply pour positive energy on you (advert time, come study at Goldsmiths UOL !)

We all been at that point during our education where we just simply want to pass and forget, not necessarily having interest in what we struggled to build.

So how was it with Guardian? 

It was not a completely random and it definitely was not just for a mere PASS of subject. My motivation started long ago, maybe not the idea itself - that came with the assignment.

Why do I even tell you all this ? Is this relevant ? 

Yes it is, more relevant than you can imagine. 

I know many of us sometimes struggle with having no ideas, are not best programmers or just hate electronics, I understand that. 

Personally at this time I am studying full time and working Monday to Sunday. I am awake everyday 7-23 and 5-23 on weekends. Sometimes this makes me so tired I feel totally blank when even trying to be creative, yet i managed to make this project.

My point is that in your life you will be able to get inspiration even from things unrelated to your assignment, and if you focus on things that interest you, or even fact that you are lazy - anything can make this easier. If it means you will create Arduino remote control because you are too lazy to get off couch - man, good for you, that’s how many of inventions came to life! 

In case of Guardian, It came from fact that I was seeking a job as a Crime Investigator even until I got this assignment. This has nothing to do with my artistic background, but gave me inspiration and i believed that it might someday, somehow, maybe save somebody’s life... I took my idea VERY seriously. I never ever do projects for the sake of pass, everything I do is made with love, coffee, and my cat.

Even though i am totally lame in programming, i have some understanding of code and i am really passionate about my project. I really wanted this to work, which changes a lot when you have this kind of attitude. 

There was a situation when i had to ask my Tutor for extension (more time). I had a choice: either to create something different quickly and be disappointed with own self, or stay stubborn and try asking for more time and chase my dream ( Thanks again for agreeing! )

Next post will explain what happened that i could not meed deadline at that time - things you don’t know, that you don’t know.

Following the University of London’s successful conference Demystifying User Experience Design & Testing last year, the Bloomsbury Learning Environment (BLE) in partnership with the University of London (UoL) is holding a free, two-day event for staff based at UoL member institutions on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th June.

I wrote a piece for work on remembrance of the new cross fire of 1981. the piece is simply an overview of what happened and a look at what the legacy of the events has been, but it made me think about my own relationship with the story and how it has become part of a history of resistance and community where I live.

when I moved to new cross 7 years ago I was on the cusp of adulthood and had never really known what it meant to have a community, having grown up an liminal state. I had moved around a lot, in a multinational family which had no ties to any one place, and the place I had spent the most time, northern england, had mostly left me feeling disassociated; more like an outsider than a part of something. I was the child of immigrants, I didn’t belong and that was often reiterated, especially as a teen when xenophobia became especially rife in the north.

then I moved to london, seeking to blend in with the multicultural cityscape. south east london is vibrant, buzzing, nothing is too strange, too ugly or too beautiful. it became very clear to me, as it does to many students, that the university was a small part of something that spread far beyond the lecture hall. new cross especially has a deep history of community values which were alien to me. I had entered into a community which was not mine but which welcomed me so naturally that it was overwhelming. it’s just part of the fabric of se london.

one story I learned from walking around was of the new cross fire of 1981, which tragically took the lives of 13 young black people. I was walking past the house on new cross road, thinking: at 18, I was standing there where 18 year-olds whose lives were cruelly cut short should be standing now; they should have been 51 years old. I  didn’t grow up in new cross but I grew up in new cross. I became an adult there. when I passed 22—the age paul ruddock, the eldest of those taken by the fire, was—I couldn’t comprehend the finiteness of their lives. it opened my eyes to a violent inequality present in our history. things that should be, aren't.

this is all just to say that the way the bereaved, the families, the ncmac and its supporters united against police negligence, media silence or distortion and white supremacy in 1981 is still rippling through time to now. 

looking at what happened then and where we are now, one might draw a line from 439 new cross road, to ella kissi-debrah, to grenfell tower, and remark that it feels like so little has changed. with this collective anger and grief in mind the most appropriate way to celebrate and remember the lives lost and the many community members who fought and continue to fight for justice is to stand in solidarity, and rage, and declare that these lives do matter and their loss is of great significance to us, our community and our history. it still is, even, especially, 40 years on
