because I rent a car to get out to my office, sometimes I'm confronted with a radio that has wildly different preset stations than I would ever select. mostly this means I have to suffer through a lot of country, or christian talk radio, before I run out of patience and switch over to the stations I like; but other times, it's someone with a thick accent reading a very lengthy advertisement for the Chicago Public Library in an almost....computerized way? and then long carnatic music, with a celtic fiddle breakdown in the middle? with absolutely no explanation for why this is what it is.
.........only afterwards did I discover that it's the station for a nearby university. then it made sense.
#I know numbers stations are old fashioned and mostly done but that was very much the vibe.#........a while ago I was listening to a very very cool station where the interviewer was interviewing one of the attorneys#involved in the CPD consent decree#I wonder if it's the same station? that would make sense.#while driving home the other day I thought about how fun it would be to write a story where a businessman in town for a trip#rents a car and starts listening to the weird radio station presets. getting more and more into this weird station#that doesn't explain itself or name its dj. just plays the sound of the wind and music even google's never heard of.#I still think that would be neat#celestial emporium of benevolent knowledge

okay, so, i tried to pull as many interviews as i could to see if i could parse what the original plan for bucktommy was (or if there even was any), and subsequently, if there had been a pivot of any kind. now, we are not privy to any bts talk, and storylines are never set in stone, even from when they've been teased or promoted (henchim friction? hello?) but interviews are really all we have to go off of. so, idk, i compiled some quotes, all bolded emphasis is mine.
i kinda got the impression that it really was supposed to be a 4-episode arc for tommy, after which he would gracefully bow out and leave buck a newly realized single bisexual. for some reason, that changed and they chose to keep him around and extend that storyline (gelled rather well in the story? opening the door for potential future storylines?). except then they had them break up anyway, leaving buck in much the same place he would have been had they called it quits in 7x06, only much more heartbroken (essentially wasting over half a season's worth of buck storyline, except he's sadder now, i guess). but, judge for yourself.
march 28, 2024, TM: Showrunner Tim Minear also teased future episodes for Tommy. “He’s going to be around for a little bit. He’s not going to be a member of the 118 again, but he is going to be involved in some stories.”
april 4, 2024, TM: “I was kind of bored with the hamster wheel of the relationships [Buck] had been in. His story needed a slap. It needed some something fresh. This felt like it could be important to some people, and it felt like it was right for the character.”
OS: “I’ve always had in my head that I wanted a partner for Buck to be someone where it wasn’t easy”
TM: “That’s what I like about this. He’s not siloed off into some love interest story with a character who has nothing to do with the main characters.”
Minear noted that Tommy is currently an important romantic partner for Buck, largely because “it’s sort of the entry-level relationship.” Yet at the same time, he noted that he doesn’t think “anybody’s making wedding plans.”
“It really is a first fling for Buck right now. What that might amount to, only time can tell. But what I’m interested in is not something that’s fraught. I’m interested in something that’s tender and positive”
april 4, 2024, OS: “The focus was on it being important, but also not wanting it to feel like the bravest episode in television. We just wanted to tell a lighthearted love story that happens to be a queer love story.”
april 5, 2024, TM: “[what] I don't want to do is the mistake that I think we've made with some of the other love interests, which is siloing those characters off into their love life and they have no kind of organic connection to the rest of the characters in the story. [...] Going with Tommy allowed us to start to play a story without just inventing a whole new character just for the purpose of being the bi character or the gay character or the male love interest for Buck.”
april 12, 2024, TM: “that moment at the end of the episode where he sits down with Tommy and says, “You said I wasn’t ready. I don’t know what I’m ready for, but I’m ready for something. I’m just sure what that is yet.” But he feels safe with Tommy. So even though he doesn’t know exactly what road he’s stepping onto, he’s willing to roll the dice.”
april 12, 2024, LFJ: "So, it happens in phases. My manager said 9-1-1 called, and I was like, 'Cool.' And then he is like, 'All right, well, they called for an arc.' And I'm like, 'Four episodes? Cool.'
"Given the circumstances, we just kissed. There's something there. We go on a date, and then Eddie happens to show up because there's only one restaurant, I guess, in L.A., and I would totally understand if he was nervous and whatnot." (this quote has nothing to do with my point really i just think it's so fucking funny. this entire interview is so messy.)
"I have no idea," he explained when asked what the future could hold for the duo. "If the writers do choose to extend this storyline and make it into its own thing [...] I'm just as excited as you are to find out."
april 12, 2024, OS: "I just hope he continues down that path and I think we will see him opening up more and more, and being louder and prouder about it. I want to tell real stories where not everything is going to be straightforward, but I don’t want the angst or the trauma to be in these kind of negative troupes that we’ve seen before. I want them to have real world problems that couples or people who are first dating have, but I don’t want it to be rooted in outside people being homophobic or anything like that. Those are stories we have seen and we’ve told, and sure, of course, happen in the real world, but I want to tell a happy story between these people and a real story. They have issues and they have things to deal with, but I just want them to be real world, everyday relationship issues."
april 18, 2024, OS: "we want to tell it in an honest way where not everything is going to be easy and carefree. There are going to be issues, but we also don't want it to feel like it's down or too heavy. We want to tell this queer love story in a very honest way, but also in a very loving way."
"Tarlos is a beautiful relationship," Stark says. "I'm just honored to get to tell a story that can kind of partner up with that and maybe continue with a similar thread."
"I really want to see Buck continue to explore what it is that really speaks to him, and what he's into," Stark says. "He's obviously going to continue down this path with Tommy for now. I don't know what that story is going to end up being, but I would really like for Tommy to stay a part of Buck's life, regardless. He's obviously opened this door for him, and I think it would be really nice if [Tommy] was able to continue to hold [Buck's] hand and could help guide him through this process. As somebody who's a little older and more experienced, to kind of help shepherd Buck into this new phase of understanding who he is."
april 23, 2024, OS: “I really enjoy [Lou]. I really enjoy working with him. I think he’s been a great addition to the show, and I look forward to — assuming Tommy sticks around for a while — continuing to develop that relationship with him on-screen and off-screen.”
may 2, 2024, JLH: "I’m really excited for Buck, because I think he’s a person that has never quite settled into who he is. And if this is who he is, it’s beautiful,” Hewitt said. “I was so happy Maddie felt that way, because that’s how I would feel. And I’m really happy that she’s there for him. In Season 8, the actor hopes Maddie gets to “understand what all that means, be in that with [Buck], and get to know Tommy better.”
may 3, 2024, KC: “I think it was the brilliance of [co-creator] Tim [Minear]. Even introducing the storyline of Buck and Tommy, he said, "I don't want it to be this very special episode of 9-1-1. I'm going to make this a f---ing romantic comedy, man. You won't see it coming. It'll come out of left field." And I think that's the same thing he did with the revelation. There's no sit down, there's no big discussion or talk about it. It's what it would be. This guy has found love fina…. Well, I think love finally.”
may 3, 2024, KC: "When I heard about the storyline, I was super excited. And on a selfish note, I'm really happy because they brought Lou Ferrigno Jr. back. We've become really good friends, as he was in "Hen Begins," "Bobby Begins Again," and of course "Chimney Begins," and we formed a tight personal bond. I think he's a terrific actor, and I think this new dynamic brings this newfound energy into that storyline and into the show, and I'm excited to see how it blossoms."
not dated? post-7x06, KC: “It’s one of my favorite scenes,” Choi says. “It’s a reveal for most of the characters that Buck has found a love interest he’s actually interested in. It’s adorable, it’s cute, it’s perfect, and the audience is going to love it.”
OS: Stark likens Buck’s journey to “a hamster wheel”: “He’s been taking one step forward and two steps back, as is quite typical of being in your late 20s and early 30s, trying to find yourself,” the actor explains. “As we’ve moved into this seventh season, he’s found a way to really discover who he wants to be.”
july 8, 2024: 7x09 deleted scene released
september 9, 2024, TM: “They’re still getting to know each other a little better”
september 11, 2024, TM: Minear says not much time has passed between the events of the season 7 finale and the season 8 premiere, so there haven't been many developments in Buck and Tommy's relationship. "But we see that they're more comfortable together," he explains. "We'd definitely call them a couple. Obviously they're comfortable hanging out with Eddie, but when you couple with somebody, it takes up some of your time, so that also leaves Eddie a little bit out in the cold. Well, not out in the cold, but Buck doesn't have as much free time as he did before, let's put it that way." (yeah so, this barely happened?)
september 20, 2024, OS: “We don’t really have too much of a time jump moving into this season, so the relationship with Tommy is much where it was left off,” explains Stark. “It is in its early stages. They’re still learning and figuring things out about each other and what a relationship might or could look like.”
#911 abc#bucktommy#tommy kinard#holy shit this took some time. thanks enshittification of google.#if anyone has more relevant interviews/quotes pre sept 17 (breakup filming) feel free to add them#i feel like there were more but it's hard to track them all down tbh

joe'marr bengals reunion — a (somewhat) comprehensive timeline

1 — “have you spoken to the cincinnati bengals and what would it mean to reunite with joe burrow there?” — “i have talked to the bengals. i don’t know how many times i’ve talked to them though. but, me and joe, you know, i wouldn’t mind going back with joe. if we go back together we’re trying to do nothing but get back our chemistry and have some more fun.”
2 — “i'm really excited for this draft. i don't really know what's coming but, you know, if me and joe could get back to it... i’d love to have some fun with him again.”
3 — “i assume you'd be okay with a potential reunion in cincinnati if that were to happen?" — "yeah, i wouldn’t mind.”
4 — “me and joe talked about [a reunion] maybe like three, four times actually. we talked about it a good bit of times. he texted me this morning, just letting me know: ‘get your bags packed’, so i guess that meant that was gonna be the pick. i don’t know if that was a hint or what. so, he sent me that little text this morning, i was like ‘okay… i'm ready, bro’.”
5 — “what was your reaction like when he was lowkey recruiting you?” — “i actually was believing him sometimes, sometimes i was like ‘stop playing with me’ and sometimes i was just like ‘okay bro, i gotcha, i'm ready now’ so. i believed him this morning when he told me, you know, pack my bags. so that's when i finally was like: ‘yeah he might really be calling this’ so that's when i took his word.”
6 – “jimmy burrow, did joe tell you—he’s always been kind of coy about what he said to the bengals—did joe tell you that he wanted the bengals to select ja’marr?” — “yes, i think we figured that… and eventually… yes, he pretty much told us that he wanted ja’marr.”
7 — “it was like a week before the draft, ja'marr said: ‘dad, joe texted me.’ […] he didn't say what he said, you know. but he said: ‘joe just texted me’, [...] so he had talked to joe like... or texted with joe once or twice that week. and then he told me, he said: ‘dad, if i get with joe, we're gonna kill’ [...] so he was all excited about getting with joe.”
8 — “what was the first thing joe texted you when you got drafted by the bengals?” — “make sure your bag's packed and ready. yeah, that was what he told me.”
9 — “the cincinnati bengals are on the clock now. earlier that morning, i had got a text from joe. he said: hope your bags are packed. i know it's me, at the moment, that's what i'm saying to myself. i can't wait to be a part of it.”
10 — articles: 1, 2, 3, 4
#wasn’t gonna post this#but then one of my friends asked me about the whole draft-texting-reunion-saga#so i tried to compile a timeline#added it to the joe’marr google doc that i made for my friends (who WILL be turned into nfl fans even if it's against their will)#and then i figured i might as well edit it together and upload it cause i do kind of wanna have this on here#anyway i guess the timeline on this is#some very limited communication between them during the season#as evidenced by that one pre-draft interview with joe in which he was like ‘yeah we still talk now and again’#then the frequency increases a little bit as they're starting to realise how well-positioned the bengals are gonna be in the upcoming draft#joe is reportedly being kept ‘in the loop’ re: the drafting/scouting process#starts seeing a real possibility of playing with ja’marr again#and begins cautiously mentioning the idea of a reunion around ja’marr#who is clearly a lot more hesitant unsure guarded etc etc regarding the whole thing#doesn’t know if joe is being serious maybe doesn’t wanna get his hopes up and risk being disappointed#(‘sometimes i was like stop playing with me’ and: ‘i didn’t believe it but then he provec me wrong’)#and then ofc the whole thing culminates in the text joe sends him#sidenote: i love ja’marr’s somewhat inconsistent narrative here#(i'm saying this as if he doesn't ALWAYS have theee most unrealiable narration lol)#like........ was it the evening before….. or the morning of.…..#and what exactly was the wording of that message#because he keeps alternating between ‘we're coming to get you’ and ‘make sure your bags are packed’#truly one of my favourite aspects about this ship is how much detective work you gotta put into#figuring out what the hell is going on between these two#which is made considerably more difficult by joe never commenting on these Highly Important Topics#and ja'marr who will truly just. say anything.#ANYWAY enough rambling pleeaaase let me know if i forgot anything or if you guys have extra content/opinions/interviews re: this entire saga#ja'marr chase#joe burrow#joe'marr#joemarr

"This was originally heavily inspired by Interview With A Vampire (2022), but obviously, it became a small motif instead. Opera houses and silent films were also an inspiration, can you tell? Anyway. Please enjoy this 9-page, multi-muse template, clad in red, black, and gold, with vivid red curtains, baroque picture frames, and an overall vibe of warm luxury."
my first template in a while! thank you everyone for supporting me 🥺 im so grateful!!
... and im so sorry that this post is formatted terribly, I lost access to my account on my laptop sigh but you know the drill!
this was made by me, don't steal, and so on and so forth! I should be posting a lot more now...

Fun Catholic Lord of the Rings trivia for you:
Tolkien had a devotion to St. John the Evangelist (which should not have been surprising, given his name).
Traditionally, the symbol of St. John the Evangelist is an eagle.
There's no indication it's intentional allegory, but it does add a very cool layer to those scenes.
#tolkien#catholic things#lord of the rings#i felt like i bent my 'only religious podcasts during lent' rule a bit#by listening to bishop robert barron's podcast interview holly ordway about tolkien's faith#but there was a lot of religious content so i think it counted at least as much as religion as it did literature#it did its job of *really* making me want to read dr. ordway's book#the library that i was driving to at the time *said* that book was on its shelf#but there is no sign of it#which is intensely frustrating#i'm not sure i want to approach the librarian to ask about it#because it outs me as two different types of very specific nerd#and i prefer to remain unnoticed as much as possible#the other cool trivia fact is that tolkien is kind of a spiritual grandson of st. john henry newman#newman founded the catholic oratory in birmingham#and the priest who raised tolkien after his mother's death was a student of his#and supposedly that oratory really shaped tolkien's faith#and it must have been pretty strong faith because he's one of the rare people who came through wwi with his faith intact#i could have made a separate post about that but i can't remember specific names and i don't feel like googling#so you get vague mentions in the tags instead

marty beller's list discussion on "the brian lehrer show", WNYC (2009).
transcript:
BL: so, what's the main criteria for landing a phrase on this list, of banned words and phrases?
JL: um, Marty? do you wanna - explain?
MB: uh, it started out with "phone tag", that was sort of the grandfather of it all, which I thought was really clever at first - a lot of these phrases are really clever at first--
BL: -- let's play phone ta- oh, we're playing phone tag?
MB: yeah. really - you know, someone thought of that, many, many years ago - really clever - but, I feel there's an expiration date... for these kinds of phrases, and it gets so worn out, and it also stops people from communicating. I'd rather someone at this point say, "hey - I'm sorry we're having so much trouble getting in touch". [JL laughing]
BL: and, Jan from Hoboken suggests, "if I hear same old, same old again, I'll scream". and David from Short Hills says, "24/7 drives me nuts".
JL: interesting, yeah! well, "same old, same old" seems to refer to itself, at this point. it's one of those - it's uh, it's like a lot of phrases where the initial spark of it is gone, and it takes on this kind of zombie life, where - people are not actually even thinking of the humorous content of it any more, it's just kind of a - just kind of a rattled-off phrase. that's I think one of the things that puts stuff right on to the list.
JF: I think the subtlest one is uh, "no worries," which I think, most people in the band They Might Be Giants actually don't wanna give up, and Marty was so gracious as to actually give us a special dispensation [laughing] to continue using "no worries" in a workplace environment. I don't know if that includes when we're talking to each other, in the band--
MB: -- it depends if we're talking, uh, about work, or talking personally--
JL: --ahh, yes--
MB: if you're talking on a personal level, I wanna hear more about your feelings than "no worries".
JL: I think the key to- part of this thing about this is, Marty has his own fine-tuned idea of what goes on the list, and what doesn't go on the list, and it's taken many conversations on the tour bus for us to even start to work out what- you know, how something gets membership.
BL: I guess so. well, and maybe we'll get into, you know, what happens when one of you uses a banned word and phrase? and slips up [band chuckling] - but Emily in Cobble Hill would like to add to the list, hi Emily!
Emily: hi there, Brian!
BL: whatcha got?
Emily: uh, well what I've got, and like to see the end of, is: "at the end of the day" - and it usually comes at the end of, uh, someone who's pontificating about something, and, I hear it an awful lot, and - I'm just tired of it.
BL: at the end of the day, you wanna hear something else?
Emily: I do.
JL: Marty--?
BL: Jenny in--
MB: -- excellent.
BL: Jenny in Brooklyn - whatcha got, Jenny?
Jenny: "it's all good!"
BL: that's like "no worries".
MB: that's on the list.
BL: that's on your list.
Band in unison: yes, that's already on the list.
BL: "all good ..." and that's not that old, I feel like I only started hearing "all good" - 5 years ago?
MB: yeah, same with "it is what it is," that seems a new one, too, which ... I'm still trying to figure out what that actually means.
BL: Joel in- it's very zen.
JF: yeah, I was gonna say (laughs).
BL: Joel in Briarcliff Manor, whatcha got?
Joel: yeah, hi, uh - a couple years ago, I went on a blind date, and um- or a set-up date, and she kept- this woman kept on using, uh, "back in the day?" and, it started - all through the date, she would say that--
JL: -- it's very good; Marty's pumping his fist in the air right now--
MB: I love that, 'cause that also speaks to this, uh... idea of, the past was always better than the present, which is ridiculous.
#welcome to the marty's list arc of my blogging apparently#I've never heard him speak at length he has such a lovely voice#I'm not confident if that first place mentioned is hoboken or not. I had to cross-reference places on google lol#tmbg#they might be giants#marty beller#john flansburgh#john linnell#interviews#2000s#here comes science#videos
