warrior cats rewrite: the darkest hour

finally!

- in the prologue, we are back at the prologue of the first book- smudge and rusty, as kits, being watched over by henry.

- one of them inquisitively asks henry what would they do if they were ever caught up in the war of the stars that happens every few hundred moons. what would happen? where would they go? what would they do?

- know that whatever happens, you were, you are, and you will always be loved, responds henry.

- back in the present. firestar gets his nine lives from redtail, gorseleap, runningwind, swiftpaw, brindleface, speckletail, cinderfur, yellowfang and bluestar

- firestar appoints lionheart as deputy. it’s noted that they feel as though someone is watching the camp

- next day turns out someone IS watching- darkstripe has poisoned willowpelt’s kit, but was stopped at the border by graystripe. darkstripe is furious at sorrelkit bc he views her as a ‘replacement’ for him and gray, but gray views it otherwise. well also find out gray and silver are now amicable exes. darkstripe, badly wounded, leaves

- lostface is officially renamed brightheart as in canon.

- gathering happens, and scourge appears instead of an official riverclan or shadowclan leader- apparently, both now face infighting over who the next leader will be. tawnypaw is drawn towards shadowclan and feels pity for them.

- scourge announces that he wants the forests for bloodclan- supposedly for their safety, but he and fire know that it’s Personal. he announces that he has taken riverclan and shadowclan’s land for bloodclan and will get to work on wind and fire Soon.

- firestar sees the roaring lion in his reflection in the moonlight. he hears a voice- take heed of what you have seen. know what you must be.

- graystripe rushes over later after the gathering and pleads for help. they go over to riverclan and find out that scourge has taken hold of featherpaw, stormpaw, silverstream, leopardfur, mistyfoot, and stonefur. scourge is holding up the latter three bc they worked with tiger, and feather storm and silver because they are crookedstar’s kin and likely candidates to challenge him as they’re familiar with leadership.

- naturally a fight erupts as the 6 try to escape. silverstream is killed fighting to her last breath. stonefur, knowing what he must do, distracts the bloodclan guards so misty and leopard can escape with feather and storm. he manages to take out one of the bloodclan guards but is quickly killed afterwards

- the riverclan cats take shelter in camp. tawnypaw leaves for shadowclan because it is one of the two clans her father’s legacy has not touched and she wants a fresh start.

- we also find out that bloodclan is attacking windclan.

- next day, firestar and scourge agree to meet. scourge gives the clan cats three days to leave or fight him at fourtrees, and expresses his anger at firestar. everyone else is like wait these 2 KNOW each other!?! firestar feels grief at what smudge has become. he also notices darkstripe among bloodclan.

- the clan cats start training- thunderclan and riverclan together and windclan and shadowclan together. firestar realizes scourge’s weakness- he does not know of the strategy and discipline the clan cats have, which he regards with an odd pity.

- eventually, the four clans join together and dub themselves lionclan. leopardfur is tasked with riverclan (the position is originally given to mistyfoot but she declines), having had her Character Arc. flintfang of shadowclan is given leadership duties. tallstar naturally leads windclan.

- the cats choose to have firestar at the front of the battle- both because he knows scourge and the bloodclan cats (his once-weakness has become his greatest asset) and because they begin to realize he is the newest incarnation of the fire that will lead the clans through the future war of starclan.

- the cats leave for fourtrees for the battle. lionheart thinks he will die in the battle.

- firestar gives scourge one last chance to give up and leave in peace. scourge doesn’t. the fight begins

- darkstripe tries to attack firestar, but longtail and graystripe kill him. firestar regards darkstripe with an odd sense of pity, remembering what darkstripe once had been

- lionheart is killed by bone. firestar appoints longtail as deputy.

- it’s noted bloodclan attacks by climbing up trees and launching themselves down

- tallstar loses a couple of lives. it’s mentioned mudclaw fights with tears in his eyes alongside his mother morningflower, and they chant gorsetail’s name over and over. firestar does not see onewhisker but knows onewhisker must be in there somewhere.

- goldenflower is killed saving kits.

- ravenwing is nearly killed when scourge attacks him, but firestar intervenes and takes on scourge for himself. the two fight brutally, and firestar realizes that he can take scourge by surprise by using his nine lives. purposely, he lets scourge kill him.

- fire wakes in starclan, and sees his first life join their ranks. he sees stonefur, silverstream, goldenflower, and lionheart in starclan’s ranks, and they tell him that there were five clans in the forest.

- what do you mean, asks firestar, there’s five? look to your attackers. do you not see how they climb? they were your kin once, just as smudge was. embrace what you will find in their shadows.

- firestar doesn’t know what they mean, and wakes up. he sees scourge attacking graystripe and throws himself at scourge. the two continue fighting, but scourge is discombobulated. firestar rips apart scourge’s collar and slashes his neck open.

- the battle slows to a stop as cats realize what’s happening. scourge- no, smudge-’s breaths grow tiny and light. he becomes delirious- or perhaps comforted by starclan?- as he dies, and his pale eyes suddenly become dark blue and speckled with light. rusty, he asks firestar, do you see the falling star? beyond the fence, near those four tallest oak trees.

- i do, responds firestar, still too attached to smudge to let him die alone.

- the trees. they’re on fire now. and you’re there, and your friends are there, and your children and grandchildren... they’re all there. but it’s okay, everything’s okay. ...rusty, did we do alright, for a couple of kittypets?

- we did just fine, says firestar. you were, you are, and will always be loved. that is how it always has been...

- smudge dies, bloodclan leaves, and the clan becomes four again.

- firestar returns to the spot on the fence where the series began, carefully in the early morning so his former owners do not recognize him. he sees they have a new housecat now- life goes on. he thinks of all who he had initially met, that first night in the woods- graystripe was in another clan now, tigerclaw and bluestar and the old way of things was dead... but there was something new in the horizon, and firestar remembers how he had been told of the comet that signaled his arrival. perhaps only now was it truly coming to fruition.

- he buries smudge just beyond the fence, where the tulips were beginning to sprout. he looks at the sky and knows what must be. there will be a war of the stars, and all he can do is embrace that. for that is how it always has been...

- the dawn, he notes, had never looked brighter.

He absolutely does, I can't kill that little boy. And since Tigerstar dies before Gorsepaw even becomes an apprentice, there's not really a reason to kill him. He's also Fireheart's first apprentice! His warrior name will be Gorseleap.

warrior cats rewrite: a dangerous path

- in the prologue, which takes place back in early fire and ice or so, smudge decides to join the forest cats with fireheart, but instead happens upon thistleclaw making the deals with the rogues

- they attack him, and he flees, horrified that fireheart might have become one of these monsters

- he joins the blood brothers, but ascends through the ranks quickly, and soon becomes the leader of the group

- his first change: renaming the blood brothers to something that matches his parallel hatred of the clan cats: bloodclan.

- back in the forest smudge finishes his story by saying his name is now scourge, and that he has elected to assist with tigerstar’s goals. tigerstar, accompanied by darkstripe, states that he wanted all the clans to be focused on themselves and not each other, because when the clan cares it shows its vulnerability. so he will keep them all as separate branches under one uniting allegiance named tigerclan, which exists to keep the clans “in line”. he will lead riverclan, he will pick a shadowclan ruler eventually (darkstripe seems to want the position especially) but for now will lead them as well, tallstar may still lead windclan, and thunderclan will be led by... someone other than fireheart and bluestar, although he doesn't specifically say this. scourge will keep the cats in line using bloodclan.

- ‘how will they use force?’ asks gorseleap of windclan, and without a hint of empathy scourge brings in a massive fighting dog and commands it to attack. it shreds gorseleap apart, windclan (especially mudclaw) is horrified. fireheart is shook too- after all, gorse was the apprentice he had helped back in fire and ice.

- the clans leave after that. fireheart spots graystripe in the crowd and wonders what will happen to his former friend- especially given tigerstar generally doesn’t like half-clan cats unless they’re his own kin

- thunderclan is in a corner. with little supply after the fire and enemies on both sides (given shadow is being temporarily led by tiger- fire correctly assumes he killed cinderfur off-camera) they are on thin ice and need help.

- bluestar thinks windclan is attacking thunderclan, but fireheart and the other warriors make peace with them instead. bluestar calls them all traitors. again she is asked to give up her leadership bc she’s mentally unwell, again she refuses. 

- fireheart leads ravenwing to his first medicine cat meeting alone. we learn from mudfur that tigerstar didn’t get his nine lives, and that leopardfur relinquished leadership to him because she believed in his sentiment. 

- because cloudpaw is doubtful that starclan exists in the same way cats believe it to, bluestar makes him a warrior named cloudtail. the other apprentices all are not made warriors. 

- this angers swiftpaw and brightpaw because both their brothers (brackenfur and thornclaw) AND a cat younger than them (cloudtail) are warriors but they Are Not

- at the next gathering, tigerstar asks for his kits back. thunderclan don't give them up, but he says cryptically that bluestar has given up kits before. she asks what they mean, and mistyfoot and stonefur tell everyone that she gave them up- which is why they chose to follow tigerclaw, because tigerstar’s emphasis on each clan being separate and not helping each other would lead to less half-clan cats being given up. thunderclan leaves the gathering with their tails between their legs

- there’s a skirmish at the sunningrocks, and fireheart catches sight of graystripe and silverstream, who tell him that riverclan has been suffering under tigerstar’s leadership and don’t know what to do- especially about their kits, featherpaw and stormpaw

- like in canon, swift and bright go to attack the dogs, swift is killed and bright is heavily scarred and renamed lostface. however everyone nicknames her brightheart because nobody but fireheart and lionheart respects bluestar at all now

- lostface can barely see and bonds with cloudtail. eventually, they fall in love- cloudtail is her eyes, and lostface is his ears.

- fireheart gets bramblepaw as an apprentice like in canon, idk who tawnypaw gets

- the rabbit trail around thunderclan’s borders leading to brindleface happens like in canon

- fireheart makes a plan to lead tigerstar and scourge’s dogs to the gorge to stop tigerstar’s plan, which goes like it does in canon. however tigerstar and scourge, along with misty and stone, show up and throw fireheart to the dogs. however misty and stone realize They Made A Mistake when tigerstar calls fireheart a freak of nature for not being born with pure clan blood and turn against him, helping fireheart- and bluestar, when she jumps in against the dogs. blue and tiger fight one on one and both are severely weakened.

- but like in the original, the dogs hurl over the cliff one by one, scourge is horrified but tigerstar says that they don’t need the dogs.

- ‘those dogs were MINE you BITCH’ says scourge, and he throws tigerstar down the gorge. tigerstar falls and cries to fireheart to save him as fireheart, mistyfoot, and stonefur pull bluestar out, and fireheart ignores him, painfully watching the dark tabby tom slip into the river and be snagged under by the drowning dogs.

- tigerstar is dead, killed by his own machinations.

- bluestar however is dying too. misty and stone can’t forgive her for everything, but they are there for her in her final moments. she turns to fireheart and tells him that now it all makes sense- fireheart is the fire that will save the clans and front the eventual End of the Stars.

- you never understood, did you? from the moment you came into the clan... but i see it now. lion and tiger will meet in battle, and you alone will herald it. you will be a great leader, one of the greatest the forest has ever known. you have the warmth of fire to care for your clan, but the ferocity of fire to defend it... you will bring about a new dawn, and the four oaks will live beyond the memories of your memories. nothing is as it was, fireheart, yet this is how it always has been, and this is how it always will be… you will be firestar, the light of thunderclan.

- she dies. light surrounds fireheart as it did when he was nothing more than a kit newly brought to thunderclan, and fireheart looks up to see a falling star- the sign of rebirth that once heralded him.

- nothing is as it was, but fireheart feels an odd peace. this is how it always has been and this is how it always will be.

warrior cats rewrite: rising storm

and we’re Back! More Things Happen.

- prologue this time quite long actually

- the leader of riverclan is taken to the city by a few riverclan cats as well as shadowclan cats who used to be from the city

- he discusses a proposition with the leader of the blood brothers, the vigilantes of twolegplace. yea remember them? they’re Back

- just as it ends the leader is referred to as a dark tabby... but wait a second... crookedstar is a light tabby...

- back in thunderclan Everyone Is Unhappy. fireheart is v unexperienced to be a deputy, and everyone wanted lionheart or frostfur to be deputy instead. 

- cinderpaw has become cinderpelt, and is helping fireheart mentor cloudpaw (who is deaf). meanwhile fireheart forges a bond pretty quickly with tigerclaw’s newborn kits because he can relate to the belittling experience they face

- fireheart also thinks about the friends he grew up with. longtail and sandstorm are still around and are much friendlier to him now, and cinderpelt is still there, but graystripe and darkstripe have both left, and ravenpaw (now ravenwing) is often too busy in the medicine cat den with yellowfang to properly talk to him.

- bluestar has been... Off.

- like in the original she wants to see the moonstone, but as a windclan patrol (led by the now-named Mudclaw and Gorseleap) stops them she believes starclan has declared war on her

- the clan cats wonder if this has anything to do with the Prophesied War Of The Stars (side note they Still don’t know who The Fire Alone is). it doesn’t

- cloudpaw is very rebellious as in the original

- shadowclan meanwhile is in chaos, and two shadowclan cats are brought in seeking shelter as in the original. nightstar, already old and frail, is losing lives fast from illness, and the cats are worried about their future- especially after brokenstar’s reign

- riverclan doesn’t show up at gatherings.

- willowpelt has a new litter of kits. some cats suspect she had the kits to “replace” her two missing sons, although this isn’t the case

- cloudpaw is ‘kidnapped’ by twolegs against his will, like in the original. besides sand, cinder, and long, cloud is one of the only cats really There for fireheart so fire is understandably tore up about it as is cinder

- bluestar does nothing to help cloudpaw, saying that starclan chose it and that he’s simply a victim of starclan’s choices

- there’s an attack near the thunderpath, similar to the one in fire and ice. fireheart immediately rushes over but finds nothing but a couple dead shadowclan and riverclan warriors (none of which he recognizes as cats he knows). but for a second in the distance he catches sight of a hauntingly familiar pair of amber eyes, and wonders if he really saw them or not...

- next gathering and HOLY SHIT, TIGERCLAW IS THE RIVERCLAN LEADER.

- tigerstar explains: crookedstar had passed away in forest of secrets, but leopardfur willingly gave tiger her deputyship(he fails to explain why) and now he is tigerstar, with stonefur as his deputy and mistyfoot also having deputy responsibilities.

- nightstar is too ill to make it to the gathering, so cinderfur- his deputy, does instead. everyone wonders if the same fate that befell crooked will happen to night. cinder is mad as hell with the riverclan gang because apparently riverclan and shadowclan have been fighting making everything worse

- windclan is really just Sitting There but after the gathering onewhisker is like ‘yo we seen one of your mfs hanging around the barns’ and fireheart is like ‘oh shit cloudpaw’

- next day fireheart, longtail, and cinderpelt help break out cloudpaw with the help of onewhisker (but onewhisker doesn’t do very much). cloudpaw explains that he felt useless due to being deaf and so started acting out because ‘well i’m already pointless so why bother’ but everyone assures him there is a place for warriors like him in thunderclan 

- bluestar lets cloudpaw back in but she has trouble remembering things and is generally very out of sorts. however she refuses to give up on leadership bc she believes nobody else will declare war on starclan

- then!!! the forest is ON FUCKING FIRE, because we cannot have a moment of peace here

- this plays out like it does in canon. yellowfang has to be left behind, some elders die, bramblekit is saved by fireheart, etc.

- thunderclan has to take shelter in windclan because riverclan is led by, Well, You Know

- yellowfang dies and it’s Sad

- at the next gathering, bluestar fails to attend. riverclan and shadowclan take a while to arrive. they soon arrive as one, and it’s noted many cats fireheart has never seen are among them. nightstar and cinderfur are both gone, and there sits tigerstar and a small black and white cat with a striped, spiked collar.

- it takes a few moments, but fireheart recognizes the little cat immediately

- the cat is smudge.

decided to write a scene from my rewrite/au of the darkest hour, specifically the last scene in which firestar buries smudge/scourge.

It was the first morning of the year where spring’s emergence began to feel palpable.

Slowly, the ginger tabby dragged the smaller black-and-white body behind him. What had glistened when he had first felt grass between his paws now simply shone. The luster of childhood had been long gone, and while it still sparkled with the glint of sky, it did not have the depth and the endless horizon that it once had.

On this pale early morning, Firestar had a mission. And while he tried to keep nostalgia from nipping at his ears, this was a mission that almost required that.

He reached a clearing and looked around. This is where it had all began- the yellow houses neat in a row, the plywood flowerbeds that lined them, the white picket fence that now looked much shorter and less daunting than it had when Firestar had first ventured into the forest all those moons ago.

Dutifully, he dabbed his dewy eyes with his forearm- still scabbed and rough from the battle that had taken place the day before- and started digging into the earth. WindClan would do this a lot better than I, he thought, recalling the stories Onewhisker and Gorseleap had told him of the days when WindClan tunneled like hares.

Perhaps they tunnel in the clouds, up there in StarClan. Gorseleap would like that.

As he dug, the ground became softer and warmer. The scent felt as though it were needles sticking into his nose- not that it was a noticeable scent, but rather one he had not smelled since he was but a mere kit. The type of scent that one breathes in and is suddenly awash with the feeling that a long-gone mother is calling them home... Rusty. Rusty...

Firestar gazed upon Smudge’s face. It possessed not the lively cheer that the tom had had as a kit, not the crimson anger of his adulthood under the name of Scourge, but an otherworldly peace that the tom had never been granted the privilege of in life. His collar was still around his neck, yet it had been worn to a thread, and his eyes were just barely closed, and the red stains in his fur from the blood that had pooled round his head cradled his cheeks with the softness of a dove’s feather.

Firestar’s vision became blurry as he nudged the piebald tom into the hole that he had dug. Limpness had overtaken the body, and it slid into its place. Gently, he removed the worn, spiked collar with a simple pluck, and opened Smudge’s eyes just enough that they could perceive the morning light that he no longer could. The soft earth and bulbs of tulips that were yet to be embraced the small figure as Firestar pushed it back into place, and as swiftly as it had began Smudge’s burial was over.

Firestar leapt onto the white picket fence- quietly, in case one of his old Twolegs had awoken before the dawn. Checking for movement, he studied the windows of his old domain. He had never noticed how cracked the paint had been, how scratched the window’s edges were, until now. Were they always like that? It was a question he could not answer. Once he was certain no movement was near, a small orange picture frame in the corner caught his attention. And Firestar remembered the prophecy, of a hero cloaked in a ginger coat rising amidst the battles of StarClan and a place of no stars. All of that was to be- and all Firestar could do was embrace destiny. However, he had learned that the process of embracing destiny wasn’t submission or a fight; it was gradual, inevitable, soothing as the leaves falling in autumn and sprouting once again in spring. Warmth whispered in the ginger tom’s heart as he looked to the slowly-disappearing last morning stars. To now, and to ever.

He would bury the striped, worn collar in ThunderClan camp alongside where his had been buried, and then he would ask Longtail to organize the morning patrol, and life would go on in ThunderClan. But for now, he decided to sit and stop, and listen to the optimistic silence of the world before him.

Hello, my OC named Gorseleap is a long-haired brown tabby tom with a white chest and underbelly. Is there any way that this color and pattern could be possible with his mother being a tortoiseshell or a calico and his father being a long-haired dark brown tabby? If so, what would his siblings (especially sisters) possible look like? Thank you!

His mother should be a calico, if you want him to have white markings. Calico mother (either shorthaired carrying longhair, or just longhaired) and longhaired brown tabby can definitely have a kit like a Gorseleap. This Siberian is similar to what I’m imagining for his appearance, as a black-based brown tabby, which is the most common. If that’s not the type of brown tabby you had in mind, let me know, and I’ll be happy to update my answer for you! One quick note, if he has a white chest and underbelly, it’s highly likely that he will also have white paws, as in the picture I linked.

Okay, now for his siblings. I’m assuming a mother looking like this and a father like this, so we’re on the same page.

Female offspring have a 50% chance of being tortoiseshell and a 50% chance of being non-red only.

Male offspring have a 50% chance of being red and a 50% chance of being non-red.

Assuming the father carries the non-tabby gene, all offspring have a 50% chance of being tabby and a 50% chance of being solid. Note that red cats will show tabby markings regardless.

Assuming both parents carry the gene for dilution, all offspring have a 75% chance of being normally colored and a 25% chance of being dilute (i.e. gray or cream).

Assuming the mother carries the gene for no white spotting, all offspring have a 50% chance of having low-to-medium amounts of white and a 50% chance of having no white at all.

We know that the mother must carry the longhair gene, so 50% of all offspring should be longhaired, and 50% should be shorthaired.

So, now I’ll summarize what this means for Gorseleap’s family. I won’t go through and mention all of the variations including fur length, just color, but all of the colorings are equally likely to have either fur length.
