So … I need to tell you a story about my cat, Ciel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was found by a friend of my sister, abandoned on the side of the road, so young and so small that at the time his eyes weren't even open. This person couldn't keep him, and eventually they asked me if I could. I was headed out of town for the weekend to visit a friend of mine who was working as a vet tech, so I ended up picking him up from them at a local pet store, buying a new carrier, bed, and supplies, and taking him to Atlanta with me. His eyes had opened just that day, and his ears were still closed. My friend helped me care for him, and taught me all about what a kitten that young needed. She even took a few feeding shifts for me those first few days.
When I bought him back home, my other cat was not happy at all. She was a bit over two years old, and since the new baby needed so much one on one care I couldn't give her all the attention she wanted, which made her resent him, which made it even harder to give her the love she needed. I'd gotten her from a friend whose cat had kittens, just shortly after she was weened, along with one of her litter-mates that I named Rabbit (I'd been told they were both boys, but surprise surprise, nope). Rabbit didn't make it, barely two months later he got sick and had to be put down, a fate that half their litter shared since they inherited something from their mother. But Al beat the odds. She made it, though I don't think she truly got over her brother. At least, she hadn't by the time this little ball of fluff showed up.
So for a few years, they didn't exactly get along. Ciel grew into this playful, sweet, clingy, wonderful cat, but Al did not want him to play or cuddle or cling to her. Thankfully they did end up bonding, and as adults they did still occasionally fuss at each other but on the whole acted like siblings. And as seniors they got even closer. I still worry a bit about Al when it comes to other cats, she's slow to warm up to others and likes her space.
Then, years ago but after he was considered a senior cat and after a completely different scare with Al that required surgery to remove a mass from her ear, Ciel suddenly got sick. He was losing weight and peeing in strange places and we didn't know why. The vet was quick to diagnose him with diabetes, and we had to learn to adapt. Thankfully he improved dramatically at a very rapid pace. I changed his diet completely, and between that and medication he eventually was able to get down to the lowest possible insulin dose. One unit once a day, practically unheard of but it's all he needs.
And that was our lives … until a few weeks ago. I noticed him acting oddly, and not eating his food quickly like he normally does (Al's a slow eater these days too, but it wasn't the same). I took him in and they said it was an abscess, his tooth needed to be pulled. And while they did the surgery they'd also take care of some glandular blister-like masses that he's had in his ears for years (which caused him to have repeated ear infections that I was used to giving him medicated drops for, the poor kitty always seemed to have the worst luck with health issues). He recovered well and for a few days I thought everything was going to be okay. He was still chewing at nothing a bit, but people told me he probably just needed time to get used to the lack of a tooth there. But it didn't get better. Over the week it got more pronounced, he started having more trouble eating, getting more mess spilled on his fur and not cleaning it up. And at his followup appointment today … they said it was probably a mass. That there was pressure behind his eye. That he'd lost a pound. That it was almost certainly cancer, and with him being a diabetic senior there was nothing they could do without causing more problems. After having gone through so much in his life, this was finally the one he couldn't overcome.
And that's where we are. I'm giving him the best that I can for what little time he has left. He's still eating, easier now with some pain meds. He's still playful. He's still my cuddly, affectionate cat. But I know it won't last, and when the scale tips I have to do what's best for him. No matter how much it breaks my heart. I've barely stopped crying since we got the news, even as I write all this down.
Some pets are special. Well, all pets are, but sometimes you find one that's … that's more than a pet. Sometimes, a person finds an animal who completely understands them, and who they completely understand in turn. Who is like a piece of them. Ciel has been my emotional support animal for fifteen years. He's helped calm me through anxiety attacks and depression lows. He has meant the world to me and still does. He has a part of my soul. And I'm losing him. And there's nothing I can do.
It must seem awful to say that he somehow means more than his sister, but that's not really what I'm trying to express. I love Al, she's my sweet old lady. And when her time is up I know that will break me too. But, Ciel is just … different. He has been the most affectionate, devoted, loyal, loving, attentive cat I've ever known let alone had. Al likes her space, she needs her alone time, she doesn't follow me around the house like Ciel does. Doesn't come to comfort me when I'm upset like he does, at least, not as much. Doesn't wait for me to finish dinner and then jump in my lap, head on my shoulder or tucked under my chin, paws up as if for a hug, like he does.
This cat is a part of me, a piece of my soul, and when I have to let him go it will take a chunk of my heart out. And I'm not quite sure how I'll keep going without him.
He can't be replaced. Not ever. But I know I can't just sit in this pain forever. It's the place he will leave behind that I can't even stand to think of. The void in my life. The empty space on the couch between Al and me. Even when he had to stay at the vet overnight for his surgery, I felt so lost without him there. He's my buddy, my buster, my little mr cat. My best friend. Ciel filled a space left far too empty for far too long after Rabbit passed away. Now it's going to be empty again. Just me and Al, and she's nearly 18 so I've known for years how little time she has left. I just thought she'd be the first of them to go. That I'd have a little time left with Ciel afterwards, to lean on each other in our grief, then to let him meet a new cat and give him a little sibling before it was his time. But things just didn't work out that way. Maybe it's the shock that's making the hurt so much worse.
So … that's who I am. That's who my cats are. The story of our time together.
I believe that the right one finds you. Ciel found me, right when we needed each other most. I think the next right one is out there. There's a kitten out there that needs someone like me. And I need someone like them. I don't know if I'll find them soon, or if will take months, but I need to look. For them, and for Al, and for me. And for Ciel.
Tumblr media
I wrote all that in the wake of his diagnosis. But, I didn't post it till today. Two weeks later. He held on for longer than they thought he would, and had many good days filled with cuddles and treats amidst the tears. He lasted long enough to comfort me when I got sick with a 24 hour flu, so feverish and weak I couldn't get out of bed. And there he was curled up on my lap, keeping me warm and safe.
Yesterday he wouldn't eat more than a bite or two even with treats. This morning too. He's ready to go, and no matter how it breaks me I can't let him get to the point where he's suffering. So he's spending the afternoon with me in bed again, curled up on my lap or on my chest. In a few hours we go to the vet for his last appointment. But until then, I'll keep him warm and safe.
Goodbye buddy. You've been the best cat in the whole world. I'll love you forever and always, my little man, my familiar, my best friend.

An Experiment Returned
An Experiment Returned
Soulmate AU
Sephiroth/Fem! Reader
You get your exams done. It does not end well.
YOU SAT ON THE COLD steel table with enough adrenaline in your veins to kill a horse. No amount of pep talk could stop your fight or fight response the moment you had entered the laboratory─no matter that the nurse on standby had told you it was an entirely separate wing from Hojo's as she looked down at your file. A file that was suspiciously thicker than the one Reno had given you with all of your normal medical history in it, experimentation redacted.
They had taken your purse, with it your materia, your clothes, your socks, your shoes, your undergarments, and even your earrings, claiming any of it could be used as a weapon. You were keen to find out if ankle socks could be used as weapons, but the nurse had shoved a paper gown at you and escorted you to a room with your chart hooked on it.
In the middle of the room was the exam table you sat on, but it was outfitted with various different equipment that allowed it to be both a gynecology chair and a restraint system. You didn't like that at all, toying with the sleeves of your gown, and trying your best not to shake from the cold. It was well below sixty degrees and without your warm clothes, you would turn into an icicle before your exam was even over.
When you first sat down, you tried to avoid looking at the plastic wrapped equipment laid out on the table. Not even the sheer blue dye in that plastic could stop you from spotting a scalpel and a drill, but that wasn't even the worst part. You saw pliers, small metal hammers, picks for what looked to be made for teeth, and enough gauze to make a giant stuffed chocobo.
It didn't help that the entire room smelled like blood. The antiseptic dulled the odor only faintly, but you could still make it out, an iron tinged undertone beneath bleach and cleanser. There were little stains on the ceiling that were dark and looked like they hadn't been scrubbed in a long while.
A computer sat in a corner, and beside it, a steaming hot cup of coffee that you assumed belonged to the doctor. It made your stomach cramp with hunger, but hospital coffee was never good and you had a feeling you would be throwing your guts up if you even tried a sip.
Before you could find anything else to analyze further and scare yourself even more, the door creaked open on steel hinges. It was a loud, screeching sound that made you want to curl in on yourself instinctively, because it sounded just like the door to your cell in Hojo's facility.
"Good evening, Miss [Surname]." You swallowed a bit of bile at the sound of the feminine voice. You had, for a split second, been expecting Hojo─if Reno hadn't been thoughtful enough of you to pull some strings, you would be staring at him right now. Instead, you found a short, quaint woman greeting you, with a cute face and giant glasses. "How are you? You're very pale."
"I don't have a good experience with… doctors," you replied sourly, stomach churning wildly. "Can we get this over with? Fast?"
"Of course. Reno told me about your issues." Issues? Not PTSD? Issues? Your eyebrows furrowed. "You were very nervous while my assistant took your vitals. One hundred and forty over one hundred?"
       "I'm still nervous."
"I can see that." She flipped over to a paper on the second page and hummed. "You have a hemoglobin test up first. It's just a finger prick, nothing serious. We'll take a look at that and go from there."
You knew more serious things were coming to you. You eyed the scalpel the entire time she pricked your finger with a needle and inserted a strip into the machine.
"Alright. Can you stand up for me? I need to check your spine and movement while we wait for that to read."
You did what she asked: bending over with your gown untied, walked in a straight line, bent your knees and elbows, did a few squats to test your hips, and rotated your arm sockets to make sure nothing caught up in them. She nodded every time she was pleased and checked off some list she had on her clipboard, writing notes in the margins.
"How old are you, Miss [Surname]?"
"Twenty-three." You got back up on the table. "Isn't it all in my file?"
"Yes, but I confirm with the patient to make sure the office didn't make any mistakes." Before she could ask anymore questions, the machine beeped loudly, signaling the test was done. She peered over at the numbers. You watched her eyes go wide as saucers. "Your hemoglobin count is four point six. You shouldn't even be walking right now. Do you feel dizzy? Tired? Faint? Achy?"
"No." You jerked backwards when she approached you hastily, reaching for your eyes to check them. "Wait a minute!"
"Your chart says you're blind, but you're clearly not," she hummed, reaching again and peeling back your eyelid, shining a flashlight in your eye. "Hmm. Your pupils are very responsive… Blink for me." You did. "Interesting. I wonder how Hojo didn't take note of this."
Anger welled up inside you. Hearing his name set you off. You shoved her back with a firm foot in her stomach, kicking with enough force to make her slam into the counter. "Back. Off!"
"Heightened anger, too," she went on, as if you hadn't spoken, her voice winded. She scribbled something into her file again. "Since you can see, I assume you must have a SOLDIER for a soulmate?"
You scowled. "Yes. I guess. That's what everyone says, anyways; I wasn't able to see when I met them."
"I see." She clicked her pen closed and held up her stethoscope. "Let me listen to your heart. Please."
She did, and took more blood samples, not even hesitant in taking any of it despite your hemoglobin levels. She pressed onto your sternum, your stomach, then your abdomen, her eyebrows furrowing when she felt around your uterus. You, however, went so numb with pain when she reached your abdomen that you couldn't even speak.
"Interesting… Your uterus feels perhaps larger than it should be. I'll need to get samples from you for testing; you may have cancer or an infection." She felt even lower, pressing right on your pelvic bone. "And this feels a bit wide. You haven't bore children before, have you?"
You recovered enough of your voice to speak, the pain making it crack. "No."
"Hmm." She reached for her clipboard and wrote something down. "This calls for more testing. Let's get your feet in the stirrups, please. I'm curious to see what's going on inside. I'll be swabbing for cells and inserting a small camera to make sure you aren't developing inflammation in your ovaries."
You sat through the swabs, somewhat uncomfortable, feeling bile climb up your throat at the pressure. Then, she removed them, popped them into a vial, and rolled over her laptop and plugged in a sterile camera line.
She positioned it so you were allowed to see as well, even though you didn't want to, and carefully inserted the camera. "Tell me if you feel any pain."
The first couple of inches were normal and pink. You could make out a little bit where she was at, but you didn't know enough to know what was okay or unusual, until she reached somewhere in the middle where it began turning colors. It went from pink to such a deep purple color that it was almost black; if it weren't for the light attached, you wouldn't have been able to tell it at all. You felt sick to your stomach and pilfered for the garbage can beside the table, throwing up in it the moment you got your mouth over it.
She still kept going, but her face was pale. "It seems Hojo got what he wanted, after all these years."
That made you even sicker. She pulled out the camera while you continued to throw up, covering you up and lowering the stirrups. She picked up her board, wrote something down, and left the room as if she had never been there in the first place.
You raised your head from the garbage can with a tiny sob, looking up at the frozen picture on the screen. She had went even deeper, to your ovaries themselves, and the color had changed once again, dark purple streamlined with bright green. Mako.
"Oh, gods," you choked, retching back into the garbage. You heaved, but had nothing left to give. "No…"
The door opened once again. You didn't look up, thinking the doctor had come back to check on you, stomach clenching painfully.
"When I heard my failed experiment was here, I just had to come see for myself." Your heart dropped dead into your stomach. You looked up, slowly, spit dripping from your mouth. The door shut and locked. "Look at you. All grown up and mature. Perhaps that's what she was waiting on: for you to mature. An oversight, of course, but I can make amends."
Your mind went terrifyingly blank at the black goggles staring at you. The strong scent of undiluted bleach. The odor of death and infection.
       Hojo.
"Imagine my surprise when I saw your chart logged into the database!" He cackled, approaching you with slow, measured steps. "It was almost too good to be true. And here you are, back where you started, a gift to me from Rufus Shinra. How lucky am I?"
"I-I'm not your fucking gift," you stuttered, shuffling backwards the closer he got. Your fingers hit the edges of the table. Clenched around a dirty scalpel. "Leave me alone. I'm a failure. You don't want anything to do with me."
"Oh, but your file says otherwise." His tone was dark and sinister as he walked the edge of the table. "I succeeded, just not in the area I had wanted at the time. I had originally wanted to have your eyes for her to see through; I got a perfect incubator instead. Isn't it wonderful? You can bear her children now!"
"No," you gasped, mouth trembling. Your fist tighened against the scalpel, fingers breaking out in a cold sweat. "No, I won't. Fuck you. Fuck Jenova!"
You rammed the scalpel forward. It sunk home in his shoulder, scraped against bone; you pushed it deeper, drawing on your fear and adrenaline. When he hit the floor screaming, writhing in pain, you leapt off of the table and snatched the unredacted files off of the counter.
The pain that shot up your stomach was nearly unbearable, as if simply being aware of it incited pain. You staggered to the door and unlocked it, moving clumsily down the hall with a hand pressed to the wall. If you had any food in your body, you would have vomited again when you reached the lobby. Instead, sitting in one of the chairs and getting his blood pressure read, was a godsend: Rude.
"Rude," you wheezed, collapsing to your knees when they wouldn't support your weight. The shock continued to get to you, your vision blacking out─or was that the routine? You didn't know. "Rude…"
"[Name]?" He ripped the bloodpressure cuff off and gently moved the nurse to the side. He caught you around the shoulders just before you faceplanted into the floor, eyes wide behind his glasses as you smothered your panicked sobs into his sleeve. "What's going on here?"
       "Hojo," you breathed.
Then your vision went black. After that, so did your conciousness.

For the “Ask questions about my WIPs!” game
@inkstainedfingers97 asked:
“Perchance would you be willing to send me a brief summary of the premises of "Gem" and "Fearful Symmetry" ?”
First of all, thank you for asking! ^^
Gem is actually one of my earliest Mentalist works, one of several character studies I wrote in preparation for another story called Visions (which I was supposed to go back to right after Chasing Storms, but then Kindred happened x3). The concept was quite simple, a long drabble in which Lisbon was pondering all the ways Jane reminds her of a diamond (the dazzling smiles, flashy tricks, cutting edges of his personality, the fatal flaw at heart, etc.). That said, 400-ish words in I realised I was pushing that metaphor just a little bit too far? XD So unless I recycle parts of it for Kindred at some point (perhaps for 2x09, with that subplot about a diamond Jane lost in the bullpen? ^^), it’ll probably never see the light of day and to be honest I’m pretty okay with that. x)
Fearful Symmetry is a different animal entirely. I don’t know if you remember 2x10 well, it’s the episode where Jane gets hit by a baseball and gets a concussion, so he spends the whole episode fainting and having intrusive memories of his father? And in one of those memories, you see him and his father conning an old lady and her dying granddaughter. For some reason as I was watching I started thinking on that kid, wondering what would happen to her if she survived after this. Would she think the crystal really saved her, or would she know it’s a con and resent the Janes for it? I followed those thoughts for a while, got mislaid by a few Shakespeare references, and ended up with a story in which Celia (the dying girl) is Red John, because the application of the crystal nearly killed her and she wants revenge on the boy who lied to her. x)
It’s not a happy story. Written in 2nd person from the POV of an extremely unreliable narrator, it’s meant to be an illustration of how a healthy mind can sink into really unhealthy thought patterns because of a single event, how holding onto hate and a desire for revenge usually ends up poisoning your own life, and (as the title implies) it was also meant to be a commentary on thematic parallels between Jane and Red John, how similar they are, how you just need to fill in a few blanks to realise they have the same nature.
Anyway. x) It was SUPER cathartic to write and I was all set to publish as soon as it was done... until a computer mishap ate half my progress (more than 5k gone, I had almost 12k by then), including a scene I struggled a lot on, so it never recovered. I’m still keeping that one on the back-burner though, it’s one of ten stories across all my fandoms that I definitely intend to come back to and complete.
Excerpt under cut. Trigger warnings for obsessive thoughts of hatred and revenge, graphic descriptions of pain, some internalised ableism, and violent rejection of morals and religion. (There may be other things, as I said it’s not a happy story.)
(Feel free to comment but please don’t reblog.)

Fearful Symmetry
*****
"Breathe," says your grandmother softly.
And you do, one laborious inhalation after the other, even as the wet, squelching sound makes you shiver, and the pain tears you apart. You do, and you clutch the crystal against your chest – because it will help, won't it? It must. Your grandmother says so, and the Carney man at the fair said so, and the boy. The boy said so. The beautiful boy who cried for you, with the golden curls that makes you want to giggle and sigh and feel their softness under your fingers. He said so.
"Breathe," repeats your grandmother, and you do – again and again and again and why isn't it working?
"I'm sorry to tell you, ma'am. You were robbed," says the doctor, shaking his head. "Crystals aren't magic. They can't heal anything."
But neither you nor your grandmother will listen to those lies, because you saw it. You saw the blister on the boy's finger heal with your own two eyes. How is that not magic? So you breathe, and breathe again, and cough up phlegm until even your grandmother pales and shakes her head.
*****
"What if – " you ask, then cough some more. "What if it needs to be inside?"
"Direct application," whispers your grandmother, eyes feverish. "Yes! We could put it in your oxygen tank – that should work. It will work, Celia. I promise."
Of course, no doctor will allow her to put a foreign object in your oxygen tank, not even a magic healing crystal that could save you. You should have known. They never took you seriously, even in the beginning. That's why the cancer was allowed to spread so far.
But you and your grandmother know what you're doing. You've seen it work. And when it does, when you're healed, you will walk back to the county fair on your own feet and kiss that boy right on his generous mouth to thank him for everything he did.
One day. If you dare. You need to heal first, for that to happen.
So you and your grandmother talk about it, and come to a decision.
Forget about the doctors.
Trust in the crystal.
Trust in the boy.
"Keep your eyes closed," whispers your grandmother, a handful of carefully grounded crystal in her palm. "I will blow it toward you. And when I say so, take a deep breath, as deep as you can. Are you ready?"
You nod.
"Now!"
You open your mouth wide and breathe, and cough, and open your eyes because it hurts so much, and dust flies in your eyes and your mouth is burning, your eyes are burning, your lungs, NO, burning scratching burning bleeding leaking painpainpain –
You scream.
*****
"What were you thinking!" bellows the doctor, somewhere on the other side of the door.
Your grandmother is crying, all hysterical sobs and blubbering mess, incoherent words of desolation falling out of her mouth like a waterfall. You want to tell her it's not her fault – it's not her fault, it's the boy's. The lying boy with his lying tears and those lying curls of shining gold you still want to feel under your fingers, except now you want to feel his lying throat bobbing up and down as you squeeze it just as much.
You want to tell her, but they hooked you up to your oxygen tank and you can't say a word, and you can't reach out to her either because you can't see with all those bandages covering your eyes.
Can’t, can’t, can’t do anything, anything at all.
"It's a miracle it didn't kill her on the spot!" yells the doctor again.
You can hear the angry breath he takes and releases, almost covering your grandmother's cries.
"Your crystal dust buried itself in the tissues, scarred her lungs and cornea," the doctor adds, so quietly you have to strain your ears to hear him speak. "If she was to live, it would be a miracle for her to escape pneumonia and infections. But as it is..."
You shouldn't be listening to this. But you do, you do even if you're not supposed to, even if you're supposed to be sleeping, and resting, and recovering. That's what they told you to do, anyway. Rest, and don't bother your pretty little head with grown-up talk.
Rest.
Rest in peace.
"Her last days will be painful," concludes the doctor. "Dying will be a kindness."
Your grandmother's wail covers every other sound.
The pang of shock in your mind covers every other thought.
Until shock turns to helplessness.
Then anger.
Then hate.
*****
You lie on your back, eyes closed as the priest anoints your forehead with oil, muttering blessings for your soul. Your grandmother cries softly by your bedside as you take one painful inhalation after the other. They've all given you for dead already, talking about you in past tense, hushed murmurs and sniffles in every corner of the room.
You don't care.
You're such a raw mass of unending pain. Nothing else matters but the burning in your lungs and the fever in your eyes and the pounding in your head that erases all ideas, all thoughts, all emotions.
Except one.
And the growing thirst for revenge sustains you in a way nothing else – no medicine, no prayer, no crystal – ever could.
*****
You never knew there was an emotion so powerful as to conjure up miracles – but if you had, you would have bet on love.
And you would have been wrong.
Love, in the end, wasn't enough to save you. Be it the love of God with its many prayers all through the night, or the love of Science on the altar of which you sacrificed your hair – both utterly failed you. Even the love of your grandmother only brought you worse suffering instead of the promised peace and relief.
Love wasn't enough.
But hate is.
Hate allows you to survive night after night until a full month passes. Hate allows you to hang on by a thread until breathing comes easier, until pain ceases. So slowly at first nobody notices you healing. So slowly at first you don't even notice it yourself.
Until you do.
Until they do.
"It's a miracle. Praises be to God," says the priest, and you want to tell him to shut up shut up shut up, because there is no miracle, there is no God, there is only hate burning bright and hot inside you, turning the cancer to cinders and coal dust.
"It was the crystal. It gave her back her life," says your grandmother, and you want to tell her to shut up shut up shut up, because the crystal nearly killed you, the crystal scratched your eyes away and even hate couldn't give you back your sight.
"It was the treatment. In a few months, we may be able to graft her a new cornea," says the doctor, and you want to tell him to shut up shut up shut up, because the medicine was never helpful to begin with, they didn't even bother treating your eye infection properly when they thought you were dying, and when you finally get out of here you will never trust a doctor again.
But you don't say a word – because you may be healed but you're still weak, and arguing over what exactly saved you would be a waste of time, a waste of energy. Instead you let hate eat away at any warm emotion you once felt, shield your mind with its cold, hard shell of frozen magma.
Who cares what they all think anyway? You know the truth, and at night you dream of a thousand humiliations and pains for the boy who grievously betrayed you.

Used to Be Overlooked. Chapter 14.
Tumblr media
Summary: Steve Rogers was walking down the streets of Brooklyn after finishing a mission. The goal was just to take some time to clear his mind along the city streets, but when he runs into a gorgeous young lady that looks extremely familiar… How can he go about moving on? Who is she? What does he know her from? Was that memory even from this decade?
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader (Rosalyn Ember/ Y/N ?)
Word Count: 2800+
Warning: SLOW BURN. Soooo slow, but sooooo worth it...
Series Masterlist
Chapter 14:
“Rosalyn!” Bruce said putting down the gadget he was messing with, and taking off his goggles as well. “What a pleasant surprise? When Tony said you were here and wanted to talk, I have to admit, I was kinda surprised. We haven’t heard from you since the dinner.”
You walked in with Steve right next to you. He had opened the door for you and motioned for you to enter first. Tony was probably close behind.
“Yes, that’s my bad. I’ve been having some major things happen at the lab, and needed to take some time to get it all sorted,” you smiled politely as you walked over to the station he was at. “But in good news, we found a vaccine for the flu that I was telling to you about.”
“Oh, that’s great news! I remember you saying something about it hopefully being done a couple of years from now, but to hear it’s finished so soon is amazing!”
“Amazing indeed. We just needed some insight from a fellow scientist at a partnering lab, and sure enough, progress was made,” you said looking at Steve, who was now standing tall next to you, and then looking back at Bruce with a soft grin.
“Well, like you said. It never hurts to have fresh eyes on something. You never know what you could be missing.”
“Very true.”
“Ok, the king is here! Why don’t we get this party started?” Tony said making a grand entrance. You all turned your heads to the door he came in, and watched as he waltzed over to a stool and turned his body toward you as he leaned against the counter. “What brings your beautiful presence to us this afternoon, Miss. Ember?” he smirked.
“Right,” you sighed remembering all the nerves that you were feeling before coming.
As you got flustered and hesitant at taking the next step you came here for, you felt Steve’s large hand on the small of your back. You looked up meeting his kind and reassuring crystal blue eyes. He sent you a soft and warming smile, and a sense of ease washed over you. For a second.
You took a deep breath before reaching into your bag and retrieving the folder you showed earlier.
“I have some things to discuss with you both. Now, this thing is a very big secret near and dear to my heart, and I ask that you give me a chance in explaining it before throwing me under the category of crazy or… Well… different,” you said looking between the two men who were now furrowing their eyebrows at you.
They gave each other a look of confusion and turned to Steve who just nodded and turned his head to you. You could tell he was there in full support and was going to have your back in the whole process. It made the whole situation a lot easier to handle honestly.
“Rosalyn, is everything ok?” Bruce said taking a concerned step toward you.
“My name isn’t Rosalyn actually.” you said in a soft tone. You handed him the folder which he took hastily, and looked down at it then to your face for direction. “My name is Y/N Erskine, and everything that you need to know about me is in that folder right there.”
You finally turned a glance at Tony behind Bruce, and saw surprise, but not as much as you were expecting. He stood and walked over to Bruce taking the folder from him and quickly pulling out the contents from it.
He started scanning over the files you had, and Bruce took a second to comprehend the situation before looking over Tony’s shoulder and starting to read what he could.
“Wait a minute, this birth certificate is from 1918.” Bruce said stealing the papers from Tony, and looking harder at it. “Y/N Erskine. Daughter of Dr. Abraham Erskine and Mary Erskine. Born October 11, 1918 in Martin Luther Hospital, Berlin, Germany at 2:03 am.” he continued to read. “I-I-”
“Easy there Banner. Don’t get too worked up,” Tony said taking the papers easily from the shocked scientist and looking over them himself before letting out a short laugh. “Good to know,” he mumbled, but you heard it.
“You don’t seem too surprised Mr. Stark,” you said crossing your arms and looking at Steve. Had he told Tony after you begged him not to. Frustration started slowly welling up in your chest. Remember Y/N. Steve wouldn’t do that.
“Should I be? I mean the man your standing next to is literally, what? Four months older than you? I hate to tell you sweetheart, but there have been weirder things that I have seen in my life,” he said sifting through the papers on the counter. Then he came across your blood work. “Now this. This something new,” he said raising and eyebrow, and lifting the paper into the light some more.
“That would be the test I’ve ran over my blood.” you said walking over and standing next to him as you sorted through to find more of those types of papers.
“This doesn’t look normal,” Tony said.
“That’s because it isn’t,” Steve interjected making you both look at him as he made his way over to stand by you once again.
Bruce was still standing where you left him trying to process the fact your birth was almost a hundred years ago.
“Banner, get you ass over here, and look at this,” Tony said snapping his fingers and effectively bringing Bruce’s attention back to you.
“I-I don’t understand-” Bruce sputtered as he sat on the other side of the table looking at you with wide eyes.
“Yes, we know you don’t understand it,” Tony scoffed. “Look at these, and maybe you will,” he said sliding the papers over to him.
Bruce took them and started reading the blood work.
“The white blood cell count is high. If it’s this high, then you should be sick,” he said looking up at you before looking back to make sure he was reading it right.
“What does he mean?” Steve asked as he went to look over Bruce's shoulder.
“White blood cells are part of the immune system of the body. They help fight off illnesses, allergies, infections, and the list goes on. The problem is, if you have too many, then your body can develop bad diseases. Cancer bad,” you explained.
“But that doesn’t make sense for what you’re body does,” Steve said now more confused.
“Exactly, but if you look closer and knew how blood cells are supposed to look-”
“These are modified. They aren’t normal ones. They are bigger, and look…” Banner tried finding the words. “Mutated. Stronger. I-I don’t understand how…” he was still trying to process.
“Ok, Rose- Sorry, Y/N,” Tony said putting the paper he was reading down and turning to you. “I think we are going to need a little background story before we keep reading these lab reports that make no sense to us.”
“Right,” you sighed grabbing a stool and getting comfortable. “What I’m about to say may seem a little… crazy, but-”
“I’m sure I’ve heard worse. Lay it on us,” Tony smiled softly trying to make you more comfortable.
You returned the smile feeling a little better about all of this. Bruce was shocked and still trying to wrap his head around it, but at least he wasn’t screaming at you for lying. Tony was just genuinely curious like Steve said he would be. Less surprised than you thought, but reassuring nonetheless.
As you got ready to debrief them on everything that had happened to bring you here, Steve grabbed another stool and sat by you at the table to make sure that you were even more comfortable. You gave him a smile of thanks, and started telling your story to the two brunette scientist.
You told them basically everything you told Steve, minus a few of the minor details that weren’t of importance to the main problem you were trying to get across.
“So, experiment gone bad? I understand that,” Bruce chuckled finally more comfortable with everything.
“Yep,” you sighed.
“So, why tell us? I mean I’m glad that you felt you can confide in us, but why?” Tony asked.
“I’ve lived this life too long. I’ve done trials and trials of ways to go back to normal, but nothing I do takes,” you said fidgeting with your hands. “I’m honestly tired of this whole not aging thing. I want to be normal again. I don’t want to have to keep trying to find a new life every 5-6 years when things start to look suspicious. I want to settle down, find someone to have kids with, and grow old. Not- not this,” you motioned to the papers.
Steve took in what you were saying and felt a flutter in his chest. You wanted to find love and have kids? You wanted the apple pie life?
Snap out of it Steve! You don’t even know her that well!
But maybe he did. I mean he certainly felt like you knew him, and every time you guys talked or were in the same vicinity of each other, he felt that bond grow.
“Ok, and what can we do to help that?” Tony asked picking up the papers.
“Honestly, maybe nothing, but I thought I would let someone else in on this secret that is my life, and maybe fresh eyes-”
“Can open up a new perspective,” Bruce said making you look to him, and share an understanding smile.
“Exactly.”
“I’m not really an expert in this medical portion field personally, but I’m sure Bruce can lend a hand, and I’ll do my best to see where I can contribute,” Tony said gathering the papers and tapping them on the table so they were straightened. He turned giving you a tight smile.
“I appreciate it,” you smiled back.
Steve leaned over in your ear while Bruce and Tony started talking about what they could possible do.
“I told you. They won’t do anything that you don’t want them to do. This is all on your terms.”
You turned seeing he was just inches from your face, and the heat of a blush started creeping up your neck and to your cheeks. Without thought, you looked down at his lips, but quickly recovered and looked back at his eyes. He had a boyish grin on his face that showed he probably saw the quick glance. You just gave him a fast smile before turning back to the men in front of you, wanting to hide your reddening face from him.
“Ok Y/N. It looks like Banner and I have some things to go over. I’m glad that you came to us,” Tony said smiling and standing straighter as he faced you.
“I have to say, I was hesitant, but I guess I’ve become more desperate in solving this as the years go by.”
“I love helping desperate women,” Tony smirked, making Steve clear his throat in annoyance. “Anyway, this is going to take some time to work through. It also is going to take some collaboration and your thoughts on the process as well. You ok with meeting when you can to help us out?”
“Sure. Work should be a little slower now, so I can make time to come visit every week to help you guys.” you nodded standing and placing your hands in front of you with your bag.
“Yeah, we are going to need all the information, and past experiments you’ve done so far to get a better grasp on all this,” Bruce spoke up coming around the table.
“I understand. It’s a lot,” you chuckled lightly. “Again, thank you so much for being willing to help,” you said offering your hand for them to shake, which they both kindly accepted.
“Anything for a fellow scientist,” Bruce smiled.
“I’m assuming since we can’t tell anyone about this, we need to keep up the front of calling you Rosalyn still?” Tony asked arching an eyebrow.
“That would be ideal. I’m not really comfortable letting this secret out to more people.” you said tilting your head, and nodding.
“One problem with that,” Steve spoke up. You looked over at him with raised eyebrows. He tucked his hands in his pocket and started rocking on his feet. “Bucky already suspects something.”
“I hadn’t noticed,” you said sarcastically.
“When this whole thing's started, and I got a curious in finding out who you were, I confided in him. He was the only one who would truly understand, and well…”
“He knows something is up,” you finished for him as you looked at the ground trying to think of your next step.
“Yeah, and Bucky isn't one for letting things slip by. His curious nature gets the best of him, and he can be a little nosy,” Steve chuckled.
“I suppose since he already knows something isn’t right, we can tell him. Also, wouldn’t hurt to have someone else my age in the know,” you sighed looking at Steve. “But if anyone else, and I mean anyone,” you said pointing a finger and stepping up to him. “Finds out about all this. I will follow up with my threat from the other night,” he raised a nervous eyebrow knowing what you were talking about. “I will leave you with something that can not be healed Cap. I mean it.” you said in a stern and terrifying whisper.
“Y-Yes ma’am,” he stuttered out as he looked into you dark (Y/E/C) eyes that showed promise.
“Good.” you said changing right back to sweet and innocent. He wasn’t the only one who could flip a switch. “Now, if you gentleman will excuse me, I took a sick day for the first time in almost 10 years, and I’m going to take advantage of it. Any further questions?”
They all looked at you shocked, and slightly scared at the change of mood. You nodded and threw your bag over your shoulder.
“Ok, well I will see you all later. Thank you again for the help, and I’m anxious to see where this leads. Please call if you have questions or need insight on anything,” you smiled before turning swiftly and walking to the door.
They were all too stunned to respond, and just watched until you were a few feet away from the door. Tony snapped out of it first, and cleared his throat as he shook his head.
“Wait! One last thing!” he shouted causing you to turn and tilt your head at him. “We are having a charity gala this Friday night. It involves the Avengers inviting foster children here and trying to get some publicity for them to help raise funds for some new homes they are building for them.”
“I think I remember seeing something in the news about that,” you nodded.
“Well, it just so happens that Cap here,” he stepped forward, and smacked Steve on the chest and wrapped his other arm around his shoulder causing Steve to finally snap out of his thoughts and send Tony a glare. “Does not have a date to said Gala,” he grinned in a devilish manner.
“Hmm,” you hummed.
“Tony-” Steve spoke up looking down at the man.
“I’m sure he would love to have a date as lovely and stunning as you on his arm,” he winked. “Isn’t that right, Rogers?” he said patting him again.
Steve cleared his throat sending Tony a death glare before looking up at you who had a sly grin on your face.
“You don’t have to if you don’t want-”
“It sounds fun. I don’t remember the last time I got to go to an event for something as great of a cause as this,” you responded. “Unless of course you don’t want me to come. I understand-”
“NO! NO!” he shouted putting his hands up and striding closer to you. “I would love for you to come. Truly,” He grinned when he realized that he was just a few feet from you. “Only if you want to of course.”
“I want to. Gives me an excuse to get out of the house. Add Captain America in the equation, and you got an eventful night,” you smiled.
God, that smile would be the death of him.
“Really?” he asked surprised that you saw it that way, and a giant grin started to form on his own face.
“Absolutely. It’s a date. I’ll meet you here at 8,” you beamed turning back to the door. “See you gentleman on Friday then,” you waved walking away with pride.
The men watched you walk with poise as you passed Bucky on the way out nodding as you said goodbye. He smiled timidly as you passed stopping to watch you leave too. Once you disappeared out of all their sights, Bucky shook his head out of his thoughts before walking into the lab.
“She terrifies me,” he grumbled walking up to Steve who was still looking where you left.
“She’s definitely something else,” Steve mumbled.
“She is so out of your league,” Tony laughed making Steve send him yet another glare.
“Ok, so what did I miss?” Bucky said clapping his hands.
“What didn’t you miss?” Tony sighed.
“We have a lot to catch up on.” Steve said as all the men looked at each other.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHARLIE BROWN
Missed Charlie Brown’s birthday. It was yesterday. Sorry. Never the less, the loving spirit of the Peanuts comic strip was born in effect when it made its appearance 70 years ago on October 2, 1950.
Happy Birthday Charlie Brown! Happy Birthday Peanuts! Happy Birthday Snoopy! Happy Birthday the security blanket! And most of all, Happy Birthday to Charles M. Schulz who penned the comic strip.
First named Li’l Folks, the strip was later renamed Peanuts.
Friend even to Presidents. Charlie Brown mentioned occasionally by John Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.
Today, the comic strip has 330 million readers in 75 countries. It is published daily in 22 languages.
It is thought Charlie Brown has been such a continuing success for so long because of Charlie Brown getting up and trying again after being down. It is called perseverance.
Charlie Brown was a trendsetter in pet relationships. Snoopy.  Pets were members of the family and truly best friends and companions.
Schools are open in most parts of the country. I thought the schools were being prematurely opened. I was wrong.
The kids are going. Nothing coronavirus wise of any significance is happening.
In all of Monroe County, there have been only 3 confirmed cases. The 3 located in the northern part of the County.
I got into wearing masks with Robert. He is a Junior at the Key West High School. He said masks were no problem. Everybody wears one and no one complains. The only time they may remove the masks is during lunch.
I checked with an emergency room friend in one of the most northern cities in New York. She says she has not observed any problems. She mentioned a 7 year old who came  into the emergency room this week. Not for a coronavirus related problem.
She talked with the 7 year old. The little girl was wearing a mask. She asked her if she liked the mask. The girl nodded a shy yes and then proudly said, “We have a mask break for one minute every morning and afternoon.”
Adults should have adapted to mask wearing as children apparently are doing across the country.
Our President is in the hospital. At his age, coronaviirus could be very serious.
I don’t know what it is, but I feel bad that Trump is ill and may die. My writings clearly suggest I like neither the man nor the way he is running the country. Think he is a bad guy. Recommend everyone vote for Biden.
I must add I doubt Trump feels bad about anyone or anything. He is the original I don’t like prisoners, I don’t like Muslims. His feelings regarding Jews is obvious. He stands for all the bad things America has become.
Yet, I feel sorry for the man and wish him well.
Frank Bruni wrote in a New York Times Opinion piece yesterday about Trump. The column: The Pandemic Comes For The President.  Its thrust was no one is invincible. Not even the mighty Donald.
Bruni wrote: “The Presidency and the President are always national mirrors, in many different ways at once…..Trump has shown America its resentments. He has modeled its rage. Now he personifies its recklessness.”
He wrote America is “infected,” it has become a “morality case.”
Every day it is something new about Amy Coney Barrett.
CNN Politics reported yesterday that in the late summer she and her husband were diagnosed with coronavirus. Her husband was asymptomatic. The Judge “felt a little under the weather but recovered.”
My concern is her tendency to be secretive. She has failed in many respects to make full disclosure re professional matters and her religion. Forget not she is 48 and being considered for a lifetime job. Nothing is secret under the circumstances.
The fact that she and her husband had coronavirus may appear non consequential on its face. It probably is. However in today’s climate where the major issue in the election is coronavirus, she should have mentioned it.
Marsha is a long time reader of this blog. From Syracuse, New York. We have never met, except through the blog. We have become good friends.
Marsha sent me a lengthy column she came across. No author. The words intuitive. I share come with you.
“I wonder…..why we all seem to be Russians waiting in line for toilet paper, meat, and Lysol.”
“Why we all look like we are in bad need of a haircut or a facial or a reason to dress up again and go somewhere.”
“There are no images of the first family enjoying themselves together in a moment of relaxation.”
“We are rudderless and joyless.”
“We have lost our mojo. Our fun, our happiness.”
“We have lost the challenges and the triumphs that we shared and celebrated. The unique can-do spirit Americans have always been known for.”
“We are lost.”
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Do whatever you can to help the cause. Few are they who are not touched by its curse.
There is an urban exodus. A return to the suburbs. A topic I have written about many times.
There are three reasons for the exodus.
The first involves technological improvements. People can work from home. The second the destabilizing threat of rising crime in the cities. Third and finally, people cannot make a living in the cities as they once did. Tied into the fact that city rents and living costs have failed to recognize that fact yet and make city living very expensive.
The urban exodus is expected to be an accelerating one over the long term.
A common example of the financial crush city living is causing, many live in flats with multiple roommates.
Key West is not the only City experiencing the dilemma.
Even great cities sometimes go away. They cannot seem to make it back. Goats were grazing in Rome’s Forum a few decades after the Empire collapsed.
On this day in 1995, O. J. Simpson was acquitted. “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.”
I watched the trial everyday for 3 months. Would not miss it.
I had rented a condominium at 1800 Atlantic for the season. Except for 2 days when I had to fly back to Syracuse for a sensitive hearing, I remained in Key West.
My days all the same. Up early. Walked the ocean along South Roosevelt Boulevard. Back to the condo. 1800 had a great pool. I took a cool refreshing swim and laid out on a lounge to sun dry.
Then my day really began. Watched the trial from the comfort of a barcalounge. Exciting! My eyes and ears remained fixed.
The evening was a late dinner somewhere. Generally at Square One. It had become a meeting place. We joined our local and snowbird friends most evenings there.
This is the fourth day in a row that Hackley has written in his 1855 diary about his piles. The poor guy had a real problem!
He wrote, “The piles will not stay up and are very sore. Bathed in the tub yesterday 3 times. Kept a piece of cotton with ointment on the parts and put some more Mustang Liniment on at night.”
I write about poor Hackley’s medical problem because I had a serious hemorrhoid problem twice in my life. Surgery for the first. The problem returned however.
Strangely, nothing seems to have changed as to how to medicate the problem. Every thing today as it was in 1855. I  lived in a hot bath, tried all kinds of ointments.
May Johnson continues to fascinate me. I make the following observation for the second time. Conservative school teacher May is not the quiet angelic type. She is not even good looking as the one photo I have seen indicates.
Yet she has the men here in Key West and away chasing her. Or maybe she is chasing them.
She went dancing at La  Brisa last night with Charlie and Fritot. They gave her a letter from Everest. He never comes home. Supposedly “her love.” They write and she goes out with others in Key West.
Even her mother appears upset with her meanderings.
After La Brisa, the three “went to Sybil Curry’s, lots of boys and girls there. Charles and I came home at 11 o’clock. KICKING TIRED.”
She warns that a “cyclone is brewing.” If it hits, it will be interesting to read about an 1896 hurricane from a person who was there. An
I have been self-quarantined for way more than 200 days. I gave up counting at 200.
Not a very exciting time.
Tonight is Cocktails at 7.
I met Cathy over the internet. Cathy lived in Key West in 1988. She read the blog and wrote me. We became friends.
A long distance romance, if anything. Cathy lives in Seattle, Washington.
Whatever, I have come to enjoy my one night a week having a drink via Skype with Cathy.
Her dog Lucy is part of the experience. Lucy always on Cathy’s lap. Lucy is blind.
Enjoy your Day!

Dog Diarrhea: know what might be hiding behind this symptom
Anybody who has raised a pet from babyhood to adulthood understands the value of an iron stomach. Just as parents face the grossest situations without flinching, animal owners can tolerate their fair share of disgusting scenarios. It’s all a part of the job.
Tumblr media
We don’t become pet owners because it’s easy. We do it for the love of animals, and that means caring for them in sickness and in diarrhea. When your pooch destroys the ottoman with his own personal interpretation of a Jackson Pollock painting, you hold your nose and clean up his mess. It’s a part of the job.
Diarrhea is a common ailment for dogs because they explore the world with their mouths. They’re constantly licking or nibbling on things they shouldn’t and the natural outcome is an upset stomach. It’s why an occasional runny stool is nothing to be worried about. It’s only when diarrhea becomes persistent that a dog owner needs to investigate.
This article explores some common reasons for dog diarrhea and how to treat it. Most importantly, it considers the differences between an upset stomach and digestive problems that require veterinary attention.
Common Reasons for Dog Diarrhea
1. Spoiled/Toxic Food
Spoiled food is the most common reason for dog diarrhea. Like humans, canine stomachs respond to ‘bad’ foods by vomiting or developing dodgy digestion and very watery stools. Provided your pet hasn’t consumed poisonous materials, their diarrhea will pass in a day or two. They are likely having a reaction to something they’ve pulled from the garbage or discovered on the kitchen floor.
2. Dietary Changes
Tumblr media
Another common cause of dog diarrhea is sudden changes in diet. Every time you change your dog’s brand of food, his stomach must adjust to a new formula. This can take several days and, while he’s adjusting, some loose stools are to be expected. To prevent these digestive issues, introduce any new foods gradually. Add the new product to the old in increasing amounts until the old food is phased out.
3. Food Allergies
Canines are susceptible to food allergies just as human beings are. We don’t always know why sensitivities develop, but they usually manifest in digestive issues (loose stools), persistent itching and inflammation of the ears and nose.
Common allergies include sensitivities to wheat, eggs, beef, dairy, fish, poultry, and certain types of plants. If your dog’s diarrhea is accompanied by itchiness or inflammation, consider taking them to the vet for an allergy test.
4. Emotional Upheaval
Sometimes, the explanation for dog diarrhea is as simple as a physiological reaction to turbulence. Canines are emotionally perceptive animals. They pick up on our feelings and know if a household is tense or upset. If your pet is stressed or worried by a situation – relocating to a new home is a common trigger – they may develop an upset stomach.
5. Intestinal Parasites
There are lots of harmless explanations for dog diarrhea and there are others that warrant treatment or medical attention. Intestinal parasites are extremely common in animals and, while they are not a threat to life, they can make a pet miserable. It’s why preventative treatments for ringworm and hookworm should be a part of your dog’s routine.
If your dog has been treated for common parasites but his diarrhea persists, visit the vet. Giardia, spirochetes and coccidia can be dangerous if the proper care is not given.
6. Poisonous Substances
We have touched on the effects of eating spoiled foods. Diarrhea may also be caused by poisonous substances such as toxic plants, domestic chemicals (cleaning products) and inedible items (socks, rubber toys, etc). In most cases, a few days of watery stools is nothing to worry about.
However, if you are not certain what your dog ate to contract diarrhea, keep a close eye on them. If they lose interest in their food, become lethargic or begin to vomit excessively, take them to a vet immediately. If your dog eats a substance you know to be highly toxic, call the vet for advice. They can tell you if a visit to the clinic is required.
7. Infections and Viruses
In some rare cases, dog diarrhea is a symptom of serious viral sickness or infection. Viral conditions that cause diarrhea and other digestive problems include distemper, parvovirus, coronavirus and salmonella. Most are treatable as long as the dog receives the right medications. Vaccinations are prescribed to puppies to protect them from viral and bacterial sickness. Ensure your pet is fully vaccinated to avoid these risks to his health.
Tumblr media
8. Chronic Illness
Diarrhea is rarely life threatening for dogs. It’s a symptom of physiological upheaval that happens because their body is reacting to a ‘sickness’ of some kind. Often, it’s an inflamed tummy caused by eating from the trash. Other times, it’s a parasite or a food allergy.
Persistent diarrhea can also be caused by organ dysfunctions such as liver disease and certain types of cancer. If your dog’s watery stools continue for longer than a week and have no obvious explanation, he may have an underlying illness. Keep a close eye on him. If he becomes disinterested in food or play, take him to the vet.
Making Sense of Persistent Diarrhea
As diarrhea is a symptom of other illnesses, it only warrants immediate concern if the cause is identified as a serious threat. For instance, if your pet has eaten something very toxic, it makes sense to call the vet. If he’s just got a funny tummy after rooting through the trash, there’s probably no reason to panic.
Diarrhea that persists for longer than four days should be closely monitored. If diarrhea persists for longer than a week without an obvious explanation, seek medical advice. If it is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, treat it as a medical emergency.
Excessive drooling
Persistent vomiting
Sudden loss of appetite
Disinterest in play/exercise
Rapid weight loss
Inflammation
Chronic itchiness
Pale or tacky gums
Blood in stools
Home Remedies for Dog Diarrhea
If the vet’s advice is to treat your dog’s diarrhea at home, there are various things you can do to ease their discomfort and support recovery.
A. Hydrate
If serious sickness has been ruled out, the biggest threat to your animal is dehydration. Persistent diarrhea robs the body of water and nutrients. Your dog needs lots of water and, possibly, a rehydration medicine such as Pedialyte.
If they are being stubborn and rejecting water, add a little (low salt) beef or chicken broth to their food bowl.
B. Provide Plain Food
Your vet may recommend a temporary change of food. Gastrointestinal upsets can be triggered by many different things. Providing very plain, unseasoned meals for a week or so is one way to help your dog’s body fix the problem. When the digestive system isn’t overworked, a dog’s immune responses can focus on eliminating the cause of sickness.
Give your pet foods with only mild, plain flavors such as unseasoned boiled chicken and cooked white rice. You can do this until their diarrhea symptoms improve. Then, slowly transition back to regular meals.
C. Probiotics and Prebiotics
Tumblr media
Once your pet pooch is well and truly on the mend, consider supplementing his diet with prebiotics, probiotics, or both. The introduction of ‘good’ bacteria will help his digestive environment get back to normal.
D. Careful Monitoring
You cannot keep one eye on your dog at every single moment, but it’s a good idea to try. Vigilance around trashcans, kitchen cupboards, and other prohibited areas is strongly recommended to make sure they don’t eat anything unsuitable again.
Avoid feeding your dog kitchen or table scraps. It’s always fun to give pet treats but, sometimes, the consequence is a bad stomach. The foods you give may be too rich and indulgent for the canine digestive system. Certainly, if your dog is recovering from a diarrhea episode, do not feed them any ‘human’ foods.

a very rough intro
Neurofibromatosis, one of the most common diseases that you've never heard of. It's more common than Cystic Fibrosis, hereditary Muscular Dystrophy, Huntington’s Disease and Tay Sachs combined, affecting approximately 1 in every 2,500 people. I have one of the “rarer” forms of the disease, Neurofibromatosis type two, or as it's nicknamed NF2. NF2 affects 1 in 35,ooo people while NF3 or Schwannomatosis is a bit rarer affecting 1 in 40,000.
So what is Neurofibromatosis? Other than a mouthful and a tongue twister? It's a genetic mutation; a neurological disease that causes tumors to grow anywhere there are nerves. Some of the differences are NF1 typically causes tumors to grow close to the skin or on it, while NF2 tumors tend to develop deeper, like in the brain or the spine. Many cases of NF1 are diagnosed because of typical café-au-lait spots, neurofibromas, or Lisch nodules, tiny bumps on the iris. These things are easy to spot in children, which leads to more children being diagnosed with NF1. NF2 is typically diagnosed in late teens, early adulthood due to hearing loss, ringing in the ears, the presence of accoustic neuromas(a type of brain tumor that grows on the auditory nerve; in NF2, it is present on both sides) facial weakness, and balance issues. NF3 is usually caught even later, at 25-30. Some signs are  multiple schwannomas,  numbness or tingling of the hands and feet. NF has a 50 percent chance of being passed down from parent to child, or being a spontaneous mutation; meaning anyone could be affected with it
Got it? Is all this technical talk making your head spin? It sure made my head spin when I got diagnosed, and I'd grown up learning about Neurofibromatosis my whole life, thanks to my mother who was diagnosed with the disease after she had my brother. Pregnancy is notoriously difficult on people with NF. Hormones make the tumors grow like crazy. My mom went through quite an ordeal to get diagnosed. It was the 90's and no one had really heard of Neurofibromatosis, let alone treated it. Compared to what my mom went through to get treatment, I had it pretty easy,
My doctors looked at my two AN's and my family history and went, “Aha! You have neurofibromatosis. Did you know we have two NF clinics in Houston? You're in the right city to be seen by a specialis.t” Where as my mom had to wait decades to be treated by a doctor she didn't have to explain NF to, I got to waltz into one of the oldest cancer centers in the world  and have my doctor get straight down to business.
Cancer Center? I thought NF was a genetic mutation! It is. However many NF specialists tend to work at cancer hospitals. NF has many tumors, and although they are noncancerous, certain treatments can make them cancerous. Also, if you are going to have someone dig around in your skull or spine, wouldn't you want someone who deals with tumors a lot to be treating you?
I am very lucky, I have everything from a NF specialist to a pain doctor to a Nutritionist. At one point I think I had 14 different heads of my care team. I felt very special. As someone who has spent months in the hospital, I can attest to how important that level of care can be. NF2 surgeries can be difficult to recover from, because the tumors destroy the vestibular system. That little thing that helps you balance in your inner ear? So not only does NF2 leave you deaf, it also destroys your balance?
NF2 is sometimes refer to as a dream crusher because it tends to affect you at the age when you are preparing to live out your life: 16-26 I was 24 when I got diagnosed, and yeah, I felt that. I was at the height of my career, literally a month away from being promoted into the job I'd been dreaming about for years. And it all came crumbling down in a day. Growing up, Neither me nor any of my siblings displayed any signs of NF2, It was strictly my mom's disease.
I had a pretty normal childhood, growing up the middle child of three on a military base. I fought with my siblings, I snuck out, I was an AB honor student in elementary school and a straight C average in high school. I fought with my parents, I listened to my radio really loud and made some very questionable fashion choices (hey, it was the late 90's!) I never imagined myself as having NF, not even in my deepest, darkest thoughts. Oh yes, I had some pretty wild mental health days. I got diagnosed with bipolar, and later depression and anxiety. Those things were hard enough to deal with on top of high school!
After I graduated, I dove into my work and NF2 got pushed to the very back of my mind. I was always a hard worker, and wherever I worked, I climbed the ranks pretty quickly. Even when I started displaying symptoms, I wrote it off. I thought it was an ear infection. When I started getting dizzy, I wrote it off as a combination of stress and overworking. I was working 10-14 hour days. It eventually got so bad that one day when looking over my shoulder to merge, I almost blacked out. I ended up going to an emergency doctor complaining about an ear infection. She looked at my symptoms and family history and sent me to an ENT. My ENT said it was most likely Menere's disease and allergies. After it got worse and worse, she scheduled me for an MRI and a hearing test. I still thought nothing of it, though the hearing test should have been a dead giveaway. I was still shocked to hear the words  Neurofibromatosis and see my brain stem squashed in a little s.
That was the day my life changed; sitting in a cramped little office at the ENT. Afterwords, I had to call my boss up and quit, because I lived an hour from my work, and it was advised I don't drive. I haven't worked since that appointment. As you can imagine, that's hard on a military brat. The plan was to return back to work when I was “Healthy”. As a chronically ill person, I've learned that healthy is not some gold shiny ideal that's within my reach; There will not be a day when I wake up to ribbons and streaming confetti and a marching band while someone holds a banner that says Healthy. But healthy is relative.

New York Identifies Hospitals and Nursing Homes With Deadly Fungus
There once was a man named Albert Alexander. He was a policeman — “[American accent] Hey.” — in England. “[British accent] Hello.” One day on patrol, he cut his cheek — “Ouch!” — which led to a terrible infection. See, this was back in 1941, before patients had antibiotics. These were the days when a little scratch could kill you. “Or you got an ear infection and you died. A cat bite and you died. Or you stepped on a stick and you died. All of a sudden, antibiotics come along and bang.” The antibiotic era had begun. Soon a slow and painful death became a seven-day course of antibiotics and a $10 copay. And Albert? Albert was the first patient in the world to receive the antibiotic — penicillin. And it worked. “We just came up with a lifesaving, life-extending drug, one of the greatest developments in human history. Except not.” That’s Matt Richtel, a science reporter for The New York Times. For the past year, Matt’s been talking to health experts to find out if we are reaching the end of the antibiotic era. Modern medicine depends on the antibiotic. “And having used it so much, we’re now putting it at risk. Is our fate sealed?” “First off, I don’t think people respect bacteria enough.” This is Ellen Silbergeld, one of the leading scientists studying antibiotic resistance. “Bacteria rule the world. We are just a platform for bacteria. Within the human body, there are more bacterial cells than there are human cells. So we are, in fact, mostly bacteria.” “Alexander Fleming —” the man who discovered penicillin “— in his Nobel speech said, hang on, be aware. When you start killing this stuff off, it’s going to fight back.” “Did we pay any attention to that? No.” “The C.D.C. got our attention today with a warning about what it calls ‘nightmare bacteria.’” “These are bacteria that are resistant to most, if not all, antibiotics.” When we take antibiotics to kill infections, some bacteria survive. It used to be they’d replicate, and eventually resistance would grow. But now, they’re way more efficient and share drug-resistant genes among themselves. So every time we take an antibiotic, we risk creating stronger, more resistant bacteria. And stronger, more resistant bacteria means less and less effective antibiotics. And this is a problem because we take lots of antibiotics. “Money gets made over the sale of antibiotics.” Big money. Globally, the antibiotics market is valued at $40 billion. And in the U.S., the C.D.C. estimates that about 30 percent of all prescribed antibiotics are not needed at all. That’s 47 million excess prescriptions. And in many places outside of the U.S., you don’t even need a prescription. “You can walk into a pharmacy. A pharmacist will diagnose you and give you antibiotics. I tend to think of it as a story of Darwinian forces multiplied by the pace and scale of global capitalism. In an interconnected world — travel, import, export — we’re moving the bugs with us.” “I can go to a meeting in China or Vietnam or some place —” This is Lance Price, the director of the Antibiotic Resistance Action Center. “I can become colonized by untreatable E. coli. And I might not have any symptoms. But you can get colonized. And you can become this sort of long-term host.” So you could be healthy and still spreading bad bacteria without even knowing it. “Drug-resistant bacteria have never been able to travel the world as fast as they do today.” And that’s just part of the problem. “You should know that about 80 percent of antibiotic production in this country goes into agriculture.” “Why on earth did somebody think putting antibiotics in agriculture was a great idea?” “We’ve said, hey, look, cram these animals together. Don’t worry too much about hygiene or trying to keep them healthy. Just give them antibiotics. And then in a couple weeks, you’re going to have full-grown animals that you can chop up and eat. Right? And you can make money off of that.” “Nobody was making the connection between feeding animals antibiotics and the fact that the food would be carrying drug-resistant bacteria.” So Ellen did a study. She compared different kinds of store-bought chicken. And she found that poultry raised with antibiotics had nine times as much drug-resistant bacteria on it. “Now, let’s talk about the vegetarians. I just want you to understand, you’re not safe. You know all these outbreaks that take place among the lettuce and the things like that. Have you ever wondered how that happened? It’s because animal manure is used in raising crops. Organic agriculture lauds the use of animal manure.” “Unless you’re just a complete, ‘I’m a vegan, and I only hang out with vegans, and I eat sterilized vegetables,’ you know, it’s very likely that you’re picking up the same bacteria.” Resistant bacteria seep into the groundwater, fly off the back of livestock trucks and hitch a ride home on the hands of farm workers, all of which makes trying to pinpoint exactly where resistant bacteria is originating extremely difficult. And even when it seems like there is a clear source, things still aren’t so simple. “No one wants to be seen as a hub of an epidemic.” Say your grandmother makes you a rump roast. And then that rump roast makes you sick. Well, if you live in France, or Ireland, or pretty much anywhere in the E.U., packaged meat has a tracking label. You can figure out exactly what farm that meat came from. But in the U.S., not even the top public health officials can do that. “Most countries have animal ID laws. We don’t.” Pat Basu, former chief veterinarian for the U.S.D.A.’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, basically one of the top veterinarians in the country. “Let me start at the beginning. We got a case where we had resistant bacteria causing illness in people. There were sick people that C.D.C. identified.” “More than 50 people in eight counties have gotten an unusual strain of salmonella linked to pork.” “This is not your grandmother’s pathogen anymore. This is a new bug.” Health officials traced the outbreak back to the slaughterhouse and identified six potential farms where the outbreak could have come from. But then the investigation shut down. “The individual farmers have to agree voluntarily to share the data with these investigators who go out. We couldn’t go any further back. It was a dead end.” 192 people sick, 30 hospitalizations and zero access for health officials to investigate the farms. “The secrecy is maintained because there are big economic forces behind it. Farms are scared of losing their ability to get antibiotics. Hospitals are scared of driving away patients.” “Well, as a physician, I do get very upset. I get very upset, as a patient, that information is being withheld.” This is Kevin Kavanagh, a doctor and a consumer advocate for patients. “Drug-resistant bacteria is a huge problem. If it occurs at a restaurant, if it occurs in a cruise ship, you know about this immediately —” “A salmonella outbreak —” “within days or hours of an outbreak occurring.” “This morning, Chipotle is keeping dozens of its restaurants in the Pacific Northwest closed —” “But yet, in a hospital, it can take you months or even over a year until this data appears on a governmental website or reported by the C.D.C.” In the U.S., hospitals are under no obligation to inform the public when a bacterial outbreak occurs. “Defend and deny. They are very concerned about the short-term economic benefits, rather than looking at long-term problems.” “There’s always this response like, well, but there’s still a drug, right? Like, this isn’t the end.” Remember Albert Alexander? — “Hello. Ouch!” — the first patient to be given penicillin? Well, his story didn’t end there. Five days after he started recovering, the hospital ran out of the new drug, and Mr. Alexander died. Today, we don’t have to worry about antibiotics running out. We have to worry about using them so much that they stop working altogether. “— want to know why a metro health department didn’t shut down a restaurant —” “It’s a very resistant bacteria —” “We really need to change the way we use antibiotics. Because the way we use antibiotics is destroying them.” “It’s putting at risk the entire system of care that we depend on for lengthening our lives and improving the quality of our lives.” The British government commissioned a study which predicted a worst case scenario where more people will die by 2050 of these infections than will die of cancer. “That’s a generation from now.” “It takes 10 years to identify, develop, test and bring to market a new antibiotic. And it takes a billion dollars.” “This is a common issue for humanity.” “Very similar to global warming.” “You can’t control it as a single company. You can’t control this as a single government.” And because the bacteria are now working together so efficiently — “Unless the world acts consistently together, it doesn’t make a difference.”

Reiki and Nursing
As per constantly redesigned measurements, more than one-portion of all Americans visit correlative and elective medicinal professionals yearly, representing financial consumptions more than thirty-three billion dollars.

Should I get a full coverage insurance on a rental car?
I have to rent a car for 2 weeks for business. Supposely, the cost should be reimbursed to me by a company after the assingment is done. Not sure if I can truly trust that. But anyway, if I don't get the insurance, it will be $500. But if I get insurance, it is $1200. I am a safe driver and I will be in a rural place. I am trying to convince myself that I don't need it. But then again, I worry about what might happen if accidents occur. The cost of rental car will be reimbursed by a company. But I am not sure if they are actully going to do that in timely manner and my credit card balance is high. I don't want to put extra money charged into my account. Motorcyce Insurance (Temp) Cost? Possible?
I own a 2001 Ford Ka. I'm 18 in a month, and I pay 400 a month for car insurance. I'm looking to purchase a motorcycle in the summer, to cut the cost of petrol for going to work, and as a hobbie. I've been interested in taking up riding for a year now. I'm looking to buy a Honda CBF 125. Maybe a CBR 125. Although, I'm only wanting temp insurance. For, Say, The summer. Pay each month and stop when you want, start when you want. As sometimes some months im away, and i wont need it. I was just wondering, Could I get insurance for under 60 a month? Car insurance questions!?!!? HELP! accident!?
Hey, three weeks ago, I got into a car accident and rear ended someone in the front with suv. I had a honda, and the insurance company declared it totaled and they are going to pay around 9k for the car. Since it was rear-end accident, insurance company held me for 100% at fault. The suv had broken/dented bumper and lower part of trunk lid dented (No broken lights or anything). I would say around few thousand dollars worth of damage. There were 3 people in the car and at the time they said they are all ok, and drove off. No police report was filed. When I called at night to get one of the guy's birthday, he said all three went to emergency, and had whiplash pain in neck area (which is understandable from rear-end accident). I had full coverage so I know my insurance comp. would pay their bills. The thing I am scared about is what if they sue me? I am from low-class family and a full time student on loans so I have no money or even a job. If they do, how much can they sue me for?""
Is having health insurance and Homeowner's insurance a sin in Islam?
In the US, Obama just passed his new healthcare bill that requires all Americans to get health insurance, and fines them a penalty if they refuse - but Muslims are exempt from this because they said that having health insurance is not allowed in Islam. Is that true? If so, what do you do when you get sick....how do you pay for the medical treatment? Also, the news mentioned that having homeowner's insurance isn't allowed either...but here in the US, you can't get a mortgage unless you get homeowner's insurance. I mean, if you didn't have it, and say, your house burned down, you would loose everything. Do most Muslims who live in the US have insurance anyway, even if it isn't allowed?""

What happens to money at the end of life insurance term?
As a young child and teen, I remember my mom saying on a few occasions that she bought term life insurance when I was a baby. It was a 30 year plan for 100,000. She said that the term would end when I turn 30 years old and if she doesn't die by the time it ends....then SHE would be able to collect on the plan (getting the 100k) Now, I am 30 years old..and want to by term life insurance so my child will be taken care of incase I die. I'm thinking off getting a 20 year term. MY QUESTION - is it so that in 20 years...if I don't die, then I will be able to collect all that money? I just got an expired registration and no insurance ticket.?
I just found out my registration expired back in Oct of 2008. I don't pay insurance because it is a scam, they don't help you when you need it, and they hike your rates when you claim something even though that is what you pay them for in the 1st place. But I had 2 stickers on my car. One that said November 11. and one that said October 08. So I thought that the newest sticker meant that is when the experation was. But the officer said November is the 11th. I am like yes, but why would they write the number down when you can read it right there? That means 2011. On top of this, I never got a notice from my dmv. so now I have to go to court over this miss undestanding and I can't help but feel I just got cheated by the police and the DMV because they failed to properly lable their sticker and failed to give me a notice. I checked my tags just a month ago in fact which is why I knew it expired in 2011 but the officer just refuses to see it as a miss understanding. Is there a legal service I can go through to get this ticket written off as a zero considering the fact I pretty much just got screwed due to the way the laws don't actually protect the innocent?""

Semester break (June-July).
Life is surrounded with LOVE – A love that transcend the impossible
This may be a long post, but it’s worth reading.
I’m a student studying away from my hometown, I always look forward to every semester break. Holidays give me a picture of rest and time of fun, nothing more than it. However, this time round is different. It has given me a whole new definition, it’s an impactful and the most fulfilling break ever so far.
Before the start of semester break, I was in my rock bottom. I was stressed, upset, discouraged and super disappointed at myself or things in many ways. I had no idea what to expect for my semester break.
All I ever remember is praying a prayer to just trust God for his matching grace onto me and I chose to surrender whatever it comes by then. Surely as it goes, God answered my prayer and this holiday had turn out to be the most impactful and memorable, until the point that I cried leaving the airport on my last day in KK.
Bible says that,
“If you seek me with all your heart, you will find me.”- Deuteronomy 4:29. “Ask and it will be given, seek and you’ll find, knock and it will be opened to you. – Matthew 7:7
Firstly, God is lover. “We love because He first loved us.” – 1 John 4:19
I want to thank God for people. I’m always a people-person. I felt encouraged and energized every time when I spend time with people around me. I love to hear from different people as they share their different experience and struggles in life. They also have their inspiring testimony and messages as they discover in this life. In the same way, I love to tell people of my story. I love encouraging them with my personal encounter in different challenges as I faced in this life. To some extent, I find myself talkative and too noisy. HAHA.
Anyhow, I felt really loved to hang out with great people whom I loved and valued a lot. I got to spend time, catch up with people. I’m so blessed and privileged to have some of them generously spent for me. I see God’s love in every one of them because they are God’s masterpiece and we are all fearfully and wonderfully made by Him.
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” – Ephesians 2:10
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14
Next, God is a healer.
He does wonders and miracles that can blow our mind. I can say I’m so blessed to experience one of His miracle healing in my life. It was a physical one.
So, the situation was I happened to fall sick during early of June, I had a terrible sore throat and fever while I was sitting my finals. I did not see the doctor or seek any medications. When I got recovered, I was left with a small lump bump at the right side of my neck. It gets harder as time pass. I got anxious about this. I was paranoid enough and worried that it could turn out to be any benign tumour or if it’s cancerous cell growth in my body. I thought my life was pretty much over. The hardness and location was somewhere at the lymphatic line of my body. Imagine if it’s some sort of cancer, it would have spread to elsewhere and the most uncontrollable because our lymph line is our body’s main defence system.
Hence, I went for a check-up and seek consultation at luyang clinic. After weekly appointments and check-up (biopsy test), I got my result. Thankfully, it was nothing serious like cancer or tumour, but lymphadenitis. It can be explained as a swollen lymph node at the lymphatic vessel. The only solution is though antibiotics medication and prayers to reduce the infection. I’m relief after receiving this good news.
“O Lord my God, I cried out to you, and you healed me.” – Psalm 30:2
Sometimes, the thing you thought it might happened or afraid of, might not happen or it could turn out to be other way round. I used to worry for fitting-in and being adaptable every time I head back KK. It’s not like I want it or I ask for it, but the feeling of lostness and fear of “not belong” always bother me without fail. Nevertheless, I was carrying a fear in me, a fear that of people might judge me or have a different eye-sight on me especially of what had happened to me through this season of my life. The worries did not happen, whereas I had fully experience the warmth of my beloved hometown friends, the people of God.
God does answer prayers. I had the opportunity in learning to be Interpreter. It was a good try and experience even though I could have done better. Funny how I ever did pray a prayer of such opportunity to be interpreter if God allows. It might seem to be an insignificant request at first. However, God hears each of our prayers. Besides, we had this Raya outing held during the Raya holidays. It was my first PYA (paragon young adult) cell group outing. It was also my first time organizing and I really get to know them better. I had never really known them or close with each other even though I’ve joined PYA since 18, which I’ve been there for two years. In this sem break, I also had the chance to send Hugo off for his further studies in Melaka. He used to be my cell member in 2014, 3 years ago. Not forgetting he was part of the so-called “Hilltop gang” back then when we were all still in KK. It’s rewarding and amazing to see not only how he has grown so much spiritually from the first day I met him in church. Also, the fact of how we’re growing up together, until his turn to go out of town for further studies.
For my personal growth, I’ve pushed myself to continue in practicing taekwondo. I haven’t been going for about a month before semester break. I’m glad I got to sweat and exercise when I got back in KK this time round. I was excited to know they would have their grading examination on July, which I wasn’t approved by my Master unfortunately. As a result, I could only go and watch the rest who are based in KK to take their grading test.
Apart from physical, spiritual exercise, I also pushed myself in mental exercise too. In other words, I took hold of the time I had to read as many books as I can to expand my knowledge, enrich my mind and understandings. I’ve made a target which is a setlist of books that I ought to accomplish by this year-end. Another personal goal is to improve in my piano playing. Ever since I went for further studies and not involve in weekly ministry serving, I had not been playing piano for long. My fingers became rusted and not improving any better. It’s like I’m stuck at this phase and couldn’t go any further which I do not want to stay at the level which I’m at when I can go further and beyond this. Moreover, I’ve tried to transform a new look for myself to keep myself fresh and a new makeover. There’s a saying goes like,
“Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try.” We’ll never know what we can achieve if we dare not even give a try. A good product often comes out from multiple tries and attempts. For me, I did undercut for my hair and upper ear piercing. It was fun to try it, I thought it’s better to do it young than later in ages.
To end this, God is good. He never forsakes us.
I have never been so satisfying by God’s goodness in my life. It’s always a matter of the heart, mind and a choice. Anyone of us can really be in such a great place and experience God’s greatest blessing. Be grateful, humble, surrender and ask God. He will never forsake and he will work everything for the good to those who love Him.
Love, not just with the mind.
Love, with the heart.

Phosphorescents
I’m writing this the day you left, so I wouldn’t forget all the lovely details of our week together.
Do you remember August 24th? The night that I sent you a message, even though I already had a date scheduled. It was a Thursday.
You seemed to be creative, uncomplicated and honest. Lately, it had become like a job to find a partner, and I had laid down some ground rules, like not bothering with travelers who were just passing through. But maybe because I had recently become exhausted in the dating process, I thought -- Fuck it. Why not? At least I’ll get to talk to someone creative, and that’s always fun!
I did my best to end the dinner quickly and called you. You were standing at the parking lot, and we exchanged casual hellos before I parked in front of your hotel. My first impression: friendly, tall and gentle. You took me to a bar with a Jamaican theme, and we had drinks on the veranda as the place emptied out. You were mellow, and I felt really comfortable sitting there next to you.
Then, as we picked up a lot of alcohol at Lawsons, I already sensed we were headed to make trouble. I was giddy. It felt so natural walking with you to the beach, even when we climbed over (you stepped over, I, more like hauled my body over) a fence to get there.
My memory gets fuzzy about all that we talked about, but hours flew by. Then I announced I was going swimming and stripped to my bra and panties. You took everything off and ran after me, until I convinced you to put your underwear back on. I caught everything in my peripheral vision and thought, wow, he must be very comfortable in his body.
There were phosphorescents. As I waved my arms in the black water, they lit up like stars. Above us, the clear night showcased the Milky Way. I don’t know how long we swam before I moved in to kiss you but you met my kiss right back. You said I was a good kisser. We kissed for a really long time, and played in the water, as the night patrol made several trips past us. At some points, you were swimming with a plastic cup of whiskey. It was fun.
Our swim came to an end when you got stung by the jellyfish. On shore, I poured some shikwasaa juice on it, which you said made it feel better. We kept drinking! On the way back to the hotel, we saw that one of the bars that had been made into a shack was full, so we stopped in and ordered a beer each. Everyone was friendly and talked to us. Then you gave the Uchinaguchi salute “Kari!” and everyone raised their drinks with a roar.
We took a bath in your hotel, although I don’t remember much of it. I know that we fooled around, but the details are lost. The only solid memory I have is looking at the clock and seeing it was 4:30 AM. I fell asleep as you held me. I felt so happy to sleep and to wake up in your arms. We made love that morning, though we were both tired and hungover.
We drove to the port where you were to catch the boat to Zamami. When we arrived you hugged and kissed me passionately. I remember a couple standing behind you, staring at us, stupefied. I laughed inside, soaking in the happiness imparted by your big affection.
Time began to warp around this time, as I moved about my normal life: teaching, cooking, eating, sleeping. Periodic messages from you stood out like punctuations: warm, colorful, open. I felt you were reaching for me, from the island. When you asked if we could meet upon your return to Okinawa, I felt we were in synch. Both swimming in the same river, headed in one direction. I was happy.
After you returned to Okinawa on Sunday, I cooked dinner for you. Although I’m still not sure how much you enjoyed it. I wanted to let you experience the simple staples of Okinawan cuisine. You were very gracious though, and I felt appreciative when you offered to wash the dishes.
We made love that night. But as you fell asleep, I remember that your body motions seemed exaggerated, uncomfortable. You woke up many times because your ear was bothering you. I eventually made you valerian root tea, and within ten minutes of drinking it, you were fast asleep. Eventually, I too, fell asleep, feeling satisfied that I could help you.
On Monday, I met with someone who worked on base in Ginowan, so I drove you to your Air BnB and then to the hospital before heading to work. I felt sorry to know that you had an ear infection, because I knew how much you wanted to get your diving certification. But I also knew this would add to our time together, so I was happy about that.
You suggested we adventure on Wednesday and Thursday, while you recovered on Tuesday. Tuesday was long, as I waited for Wednesday to arrive. I began to have some confused feelings, like what am I doing with this guy? A bit scared that I already liked you so much. I spent some time counseling my best friends overseas. I didn’t sleep much that night. A talk with my friend who was losing her daughter to cancer, and wondering how to process my feelings for you, kept me up for a while. But I rallied and picked you up amid the rain, and we began our trek north.
You had begun to ask about my project and various things about the political situation in Okinawa. The fact that you spent time reading about it on Zamami really impressed me. I thought it was great that you were interested in seeing the bay, and understanding more about the US military occupation on the island.
In Ginoza, at the farmer’s market, we decided on campling, and stocked up on vegetables. We continued our drive north, stopping at the grocery store to pick up more provisions. You fell asleep as we wound through the mountains from the east coast to Aha, where we would spend the night.
You were an expert with the tent. I was tired from the lack of sleep and driving, but I marveled at your detailed explanation of how to make a tent. I hadn’t asked, but I guess you thought I wanted to know. You were sharing your knowledge about something you were passionate about, and I really appreciated that. Thank you.
During this time, I daydreamed about living in Australia with you. We would go camping together, just like this. And I would feel safe in your company, because you seemed like an experienced camper. I watched you move about, as you set it up, and thought the way you crouch into a little ball while sitting on the ground was so adorable.
After the caretaker left for the evening, we walked up the stairs towards a trail. A flight ahead of me, I saw you do a jump (and a dance move--hop to the side). Then I saw the black snake, seemingly swimming on air, with its head raised high. I thought maybe it was the poisonous habu. We decided not to go walking after that.
As expected, you expertly lit the coal fire, after we found some kindling. We grilled mushrooms, eggplant and fish. On the side, we had tomatoes, cucumbers and onigiri. At this point, I was steeped in a fantasy--to be with you totally alone in the middle of the mountains. All set up with a tent and a fire; stars beginning to show above us; night breeze cooling down.
We laid on the wooden bridge looking at the stars. Although I was tired, I wanted to stay awake to prolong the experience of the special evening. Two times, a pair of military helicopters zoomed past us, flying very low. You joked that they were there to survey us. Maybe they were.
Before sleep, we made love in the shower. Standing in the stall, I felt how tall you were, and wondered if the difference in our height would create problems in our sex life. But you were such a generous lover. I felt so good, appreciated, taken care of. I enamored of your long, lean body, and wondered how I could manage to caress the whole length of it.
In the tent, you held me tight, wrapping your long legs around my midsection. You fell asleep. I listened to the birds and insects calling into the night, and was eventually rocked to sleep by the distant waves of the ocean in the distance. During the night, you woke me to have sex. I remember the weight of your body on me, and looking up at the stars through the leaves.
