ohhhh my god. okay. so. my aunt does like, she buys random junk in bulk from retail wholesalers and then resells it on like, facebook marketplace and ebay and stuff. whatever. so my mom works for her. makes a flat $50 a day, regardless of the fact that shes disabled and doing hard labor for at least 8 hours a day, often 10+. and min wage here is $10 an hour but mom argued that $50 a day is still more than what she would make working the same hours at an actual job because of taxes...like girl that would be 50% taxes. you do not pay that fucking much. so thats already Bad.

but today mom shows me a video of a knife theyre gonna sell, and i watch 2 seconds and i realize its an automatic knife, and i tell her hey. thats illegal to possess in this state. let alone sell! and mom is like ohhh [aunt] knows what shes doing itll be fine.... we sell knives on there all the time she just doesnt put pictures and calls them something else on the listing to get around fb/ebays policies :)

I just realized my issue w picky eaters isn't that it pisses me off to not see them in misery or something, it's just that they make me feel the same as when someone doesn't it; it upsets me that they are doing something so actively harmful to themselves. Bc a balanced diet isn't just necessary to look skinny hot 🤪 etc (doesn't even do that i can confirm) but it's also needed bc so many parts of your body need different things....... Like, unless you take vitamins, you gotta mix up your diet you need to eat fresh vegetables you need iron you need more shit!! When you don't eat it's just the same, you are neglecting your body of said things, and like, i don't think it's a bad thing to be upset about!!!

guess who's back, back again

in some good news, i am pretty sure i am gonna be having a job soon and i have a second interview tommorow plus some advice on a store that would likely hire me. i am also able to pay rent this month and i already paid the phone bill, plus im doing pretty good mental health wise.

im also going some severe breast dysphoria lately possibly started back up from my recent trauma regarding the ex i had to kick out, so im gonna be trying to get my hands on a binder

Modern AU: Norton Campbell

You've heard of modern reader? Well now it's time for Modern canon!

- Previously, he worked in the oil industry, but a nasty accident he doesn’t speak about has left him with his fair share of burn scars. Norton now works as an independent contractor, known around town as a do-it-all type of handyman. He rarely works with or for group projects, preferring to be hired directly by property owners for the work they need done. He’s his own boss, and he makes his own schedule, but he’s a workaholic.

- He was raised by his uncle Benny after his parents died when he was still very young—his mother shortly after childbirth, due to complications, and his father in a work-related accident. Benny’s health deteriorated fast, though, and as soon as he was legally able Norton picked up a part-time job to help pay the bills and build a college fund. (Or several, more like, and he was known to bounce around for better pay.)

-Some time in his senior year of high school, he discovered that Benny was keeping secrets; Benny had not only convinced his father to stay in the oil industry after he was born, but wasted and gambled away all the life insurance money from his death. Enraged and betrayed, Norton dropped out of school and left. He drove as far away as he could with the little money he had, and then lived out of his truck for a while. Eventually, he made enough money to rent a shitty little motel room by the week, and then a shitty little apartment.

-After leaving, he at first went into the oil industry like his old man and Benny had been—it was something he was familiar enough with and hard labor paid better than being a busboy again. But after a few years there was an accident which left him with several burn scars. He was left in pain for a long time, but the worker’s comp paid for most of his medical bills and his rent, giving him just enough time to get his GED. After that, he started into construction, plumbing, and other handiman things he was knowledgeable in after years of being poor and self-sufficient.

-The accident, this time, was more of an ACTUAL accident. Norton had a disagreement with some of the coworkers he hated. There was an altercation, and something ignited…and Norton was the only one who got out. He doesn’t talk about it, mostly out of shame and a sense of guilt, but he copes by telling himself they deserved it.

- He drives the same beat-up old pickup truck Benny bought for him as a kid. It was transferred into his name when he was 18, so Benny can’t swipe it from under his nose. (Legally, anyway.) He could probably get a loan and buy a new car, but at this point he prefers to keep the old hunk of junk. Maybe he’s sentimental, or maybe the weekly maintenance he has to do on it is just therapeutic in a way.

-Not a super techy guy. He keeps up with industry news and learns new skills often, but his truck, his phone, and most of his home appliances are older. He’s good enough with fixing things that he hasn’t bothered to replace them.

-He’s not much of a decorator, either, but he’s good at thrifting and building his own furniture with recycled materials. His apartment/home is a bit of a hodgepodge, with mostly bare walls, but what he does have I impressive in its own way. Any décor he has is likely gifted.

-He’d like to own a home one day, but he’s playing things by ear. He realizes that might be asking a lot while he’s got no real support system.

-He’s a fair cook, but a lot of what he makes could be called “struggle meals.” They’re what he’s been used to for a long time.

-He’s a little paranoid about pumping gas into his truck, but he’s gotta do what he’s gotta do. On his days off, he tends to walk to take public transit to save some money and gas mileage.

-He’s that guy with a 7-in-1 shampoo, conditioner, bodywash etc men’s soap. Someone please teach him better ways.

I have a longer post about this in my drafts about debunking some misleading information, idk when or if I'll be in the mood to drop it but if nothing else, Etsy is not on the BDS boycott list.

You do not need to boycott Etsy. Etsy is a marketplace where independent merchants host storefronts. It does not make and produce its own goods. When you just start making posts out of the blue calling for boycotts and for people to delete their accounts and never buy off Etsy again, you're throwing merchants so hard under the bus with no time to prepare on their ends.

I know a lot of people here see Etsy as like, a place where people casually sell stickers and keychains for a few dollars a pop, but for many people (including people I personally know in real life) that is their INCOME; that is how they pay bills and rent. You can't expect someone to "just move sites" at the drop of a hat. Imagine the amount of work involved for someone who makes hundreds of sales a month, to reupload EVERY listing somewhere else. To promote their new storefront site to all the followers they have and inevitably lose tons in the transition. To change business cards, links on all their accounts (imagine replacing every post about every item on their twitter/insta/etc to have a link to the new site's listing). Even if they somehow got it all done in a week, that doesn't guarantee everyone will be up-to-date on the move and they'll see the same amount of sales and traffic.

There are also not very many alternatives currently available and well known that operate with the efficiency of Etsy, nor have a good a search function. A HUGE amount of traffic comes from the Etsy search alone, ESPECIALLY if you're someone who doesn't have an enormous following on some social media where you're promoting your stuff, and rely a lot on people browsing Etsy itself to find your listings.

If you're someone who won't be hurt by moving your Etsy shop somewhere else and want to leave, by all means that's your prerogative. If you no longer want to buy on Etsy, that's also your prerogative, but my question for you is, are you going to support the artists you followed on Etsy elsewhere? I think that's something to consider.

But you gotta stop calling for boycotts out of absolutely nowhere, with no warning or organization or anything cohesive, and mindlessly reblogging posts about it. Etsy's CEO or whatever is not going to feel it, but independent artists will feel it anywhere from "ouch my extra spending money" to "I can't afford food anymore". It's truly irresponsible and careless.

Intrusive thoughts are not you, they're an asshole that needs to pay rent in your brain.

So a thing I wish was better shown about intrusive thoughts, particularly if you've suffered with them for years is how fucking tedious they can get. So I deal with a thing called Moral Scrupulosity. It's a kind of OCD where my brain fixates on the idea of morality--specifically it measures every action I do against my own personal moral code and decides whether or not I am Good or Bad. Only, the game is rigged and I am destined to always be Bad. Not just regular Bad. Tainted Bad. Evil Bad. Destroy everything you Touch Bad. This is a problem I've had for a very long time, but had no idea what the fuck was going on til like 2 years ago. I just thought this was regular depression. I've now hit a stage where this shit comes and goes in terms of severity, though it's always ambiently kind of around like a fart in an elevator. Right now, I'm in the midst of a Harder Time, where I have pretty steady intrusive thoughts. Intrusive thoughts if you're wondering are: Thoughts that you cannot control, that interrupt whatever the fuck you're doing, to say something that is upsetting or disturbing to you. Because I have moral scrupolisity, my intrusive thoughts revolve around: -Me secretly being a terrible person. -Self-Harm as the solution to me being a terrible person. -A random stream of horribly unpleasant things that are at odds with my own morality (usually something about slurs, something about violence, slut shaming, body shaming, etc.) -Panic about other people observing me, judging me, or attacking me. These thoughts used to really really fuck me up every time they started getting bad. I used to question myself and my goodness, and be afraid that I was a terrible disgusting person. Then I learned that intrusive thoughts are not what you actually believe. They're basically like if your spiritual nemesis moved into your head with a bullhorn. This was life changing. Realizing my intrusive thoughts are a mental illness, not what I actually believe or feel, has let me separate my identity from them. I am not my intrusive thoughts. They're just a fucked up interloper in my head. A TV I can't shut off. That does not get rid of the stress they cause me, but it does lessen it significantly. I no longer go into a tailspin with these episodes. I'm still drained by them, but not nearly as much. Because now I focus on rerouting my attention. My thought patterns now look more like: "Ah, yeah, I gotta order groceries today [INTRUSIVE THOUGHT] yeah yeah, alright Timmy. Do I still have oat milk left, or is that shit going bad?" They don't take up nearly as much space in my life, despite however much space they take up in my head. It's still tiring, still annoying, but I'm no longer wasting my life questioning if I'm Secretly Evil pretending to be kind. If you have intrusive thoughts, I hope this post makes you feel less alone, less ashamed, and less afraid. You're not your intrusive thoughts.

Are you a freelance illustrator, character concept artist, graphic designer etc.? If so, how difficult it is to work as one? hi! not a problem at all! i've worked freelance so that's all I can really share with you. these days i mainly work for illustration but I've also accepted projects in graphic and ui/ux design when i was younger and illustration wasn't making the bank for me yet.

when it comes to it being "difficult" well... i think my lifestyle is very specific, to say the least, where working on a stable job is not really an option for me nor will it ever be in the foreseeable future. so my experience and opinion might not apply to most people. with the way my life works, i'm lucky to even be able to do freelance as an option so i'm grateful to have it at all. it gives me a chance to earn money at home while still being present at home and in the comfort of it.

i will say, the common problem or issue with working freelance is that you are your own boss. you have to manage and hold yourself accountable for everything you do. one might say "hey, that's AWESOME, i can do whatever i want" but i promise you that there will come a time when it will be a handful.

another is the fact that you hardly get additional benefits, if at all. no insurance, no yearly or holiday bonuses, etc etc., and when it comes to being paid, well, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't. it's kind of a high-tide-low-tide situation especially when you start out. projects don't really roll in casually. this is why most people have a side job while freelancing because it's just not consistent sometimes, and, well, you gotta pay rent and utilities.

when it DOES roll in though, it's good times! especially when you live in a third world country like mine, being able to do freelance and accept projects from clients abroad who pay in dollars or euros is a lifechanger. so that's one of the perks of doing freelance when you also can't find a job overseas.

overall, i think it heavily depends on your lifestyle and how much you're willing to let go for what you can get, which unfortunately i can't help with aside from giving you a brief view of what's to come.
