So I know I'm kind of a weirdo in that my favorite operatic (-adjacent) Faust adaptation is Berlioz, but that doesn't mean I won't admit that when the Gounod version slaps, it slaps HARD.
(I feel like the blocking here falls down a little at the end but still)

Le Veau D’Or (Faust, Charles Gounod, 1859)
Le Veau D’Or, meaning the golden calf, is a biblical reference whereby Aaron, Moses’ brother, together with the isarelites saved by God, melted gold and worship a golden calf while waiting for Moses to come back down the mountain. The action of worshiping other entities was explicitly forbidden by the newfound rules of Christianity (Exodus 32).
When Moses returned he was so angry that he even destroyed the table of commandments recently handed by God. Consequently, he climbed back up the mountain and begged God to forgive them and give it to them again.
With this said, the bass Aria represents Mephistopheles tempting Faust into sinful delights on what’s called Walpurgi’s Night.

“It's very easy to fail,” Johnson says. “The texts of Shakespeare are so long, so many words, so many scenes, so many characters. That doesn't translate well to an efficient two to three-hour opera with a clear story that can be sung in music, which necessarily takes more time than speaking.”

Alfred Hitchcock
Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, born in 1899, died on 29 April 1980.He was one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema and the father of the thriller genre: he used the camera angle to draw the viewer’s eye into the frame in a particular way and mounted shots in such a way as to build suspense or create a sense of expectation.
In his long career he also produced the television…

My version of this beautiful piece dedicated to the Holy Virgin in a prayer in the Latin language called "Ave Maria". This particular setting of the key (E♭-Major) is significantly deeper than the standard which most often seems to be in C-Major. Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum; benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen. Also, not related to the particular piece, but to the Virgin Mary Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Father, send now Your Spirit over the earth. Let the Holy Spirit live in the hearts of all nations, that they may be preserved from degeneration, disaster and war. May the Lady of All Nations, who once was Mary, be our Advocate. Amen.

Marie Caroline Miolan-Carvalho (1827-1895). From 1859 to 1867 she created four major characters in Charles Gounod's operas: Marguerite (1859), Baucis (1860), Mireille (1864) and Juliette (1867).

Track of the Day #7: Gounod’s Faust--Overture
One of the most famous adaptations of the quintessential tale of a deal with the devil, and rightly so, Gounod’s opera is a perfect listen for this spoopy time of year.
