In this tutorial, we will learn about 2 Grasshopper components: Partition List and Split Tree minute: 6:30 Partition List will let you take a list and output a list of sub-lists where the count of elements in each of those sub-lists is controlled using a custom pattern. The Split Tree component will let you take a complex list of sub-lists and pick from one or more of those sub-lists one or more elements and even a range of elements based on a certain custom mask we supply

Scaling up afforestation could be beautiful. The same goes for soil carbon sequestration—using methods like no-till, crop rotation, and/or regenerative grazing to store more carbon in soils. Agroforestry, or growing crops along with trees, can be a win-win for farmers seeking to diversify their crops. Blue carbon, or sequestering carbon in coastal ecosystems like sea-grasses and mangroves, could double as coastal protection for communities and support adaptation.
These strategies to remove carbon could also be dystopian, depending on who goes about them and how. Imagine a network of satellites and sensors feeding data to platforms 24/7, optimizing each square meter of land to sequester carbon. That could be great—but now imagine it’s run by a mega platform whose main aim is to allocate lowest cost carbon removals to algorithmic bidders. Companies procure carbon removals as needed based upon their changing forecasts, and speculators also exchange carbon removal futures, reserving vast areas of land from food production. The land is optimized for carbon, not grasshoppers, birds, or salamanders. Formerly forest-dwelling communities have long since left or been forced away, migrating to megacities, their cultural practices threatened with erasure. Despite early gestures toward vague “co-benefits,” the discourse of climate emergency has led the lands of the world to be optimized for a sole purpose. This is one extreme end-of-the-century scenario, but it could be the direction that carbon logics + artificial intelligence + a state of climate emergency + a lack of socioecological systems thinking points us toward.

Planet quack – planet with sphere form mushrooms
Tumblr media
Three dimensional scene for today based on strange planet. Some strange planet. Another planet. There are everything another on that planet. Looks like, it was some videogame about mutants Evolve. But I have never played it.
Tumblr media
It is strange planet. It is about swamps. And here there is a hot sun. Warm climate. Even hot. And there are lots of green and swamps. There are growing some mushrooms kind things. There are mushrooms. There is tree. Everything growing up with mushrooms. And mushrooms like plants. There are not a lot of hills here. And at the top of them there are also a mushrooms.
Tumblr media
All around is full of insects. Looks like, frogs doing their quacks. And grasshoppers are singing their songs. But, it is hard to see them. There are more calm places here. Something, it is even close to planet Earth. But there, it is everything covered with mushrooms. So, not in water place it is few here.
Tumblr media
It is should to he a whole fields here. With insects. And, mainly, lots of swamps soil. Everything is a little in a water. Lots of duckweed. And green grass. So, birds are flying here. And frogs are building their houses out of the tree. Abandoned little houses are growing with sphere form mushrooms very fast. Frogs are good and kind and clever. It is their planet. Planet quack.
Tumblr media
Day is changing with rainy cold weather. And, later, it is even can to be a rain for a few days. Small rain. Ideal time for swamps and frogs. Later, it can to be a warm days with hot weather. It is ideal time for insects. And a field. One part of the planet – it is more swamps. And another – more like a field. Everywhere lives frogs, insects and birds. But, at the swamp side – it is more about a frogs. They are even become clever. And at another part of the planet – it is more a field zone. And lots of insects, bugs, and birds there.
Tumblr media
And, in swamps, there are lots of frogs. It is their ideal place. Frogs eat all of these sphere form mushrooms. They are different about taste and color. There are even some flowers on them. There are, also, here a crab like mushrooms. They are also a delicious things. It is a paradise place for those who likes to eat mushrooms.
Tumblr media
It is a continue for observations about this planet. And there are upcoming a new data. So, at first, it was looks like, all planet – it is a swamp. And, later, it is new information to  find out. That plant something like separate about two parts. One is for swamp and second is more field. Later, it will be received more details about climate. And about a clever frogs! It is all very fascinating!

offended that all the available for $ models of bald cypress do not include the below-ground portion...... do you know how annoying it is to 3d model roots, in general in rhino? (tentacles too. the tapering part, the randomness. the math is kind of complex)
Tumblr media
(still can't believe i dropped out of computer science just to work the command line in rhino/program visually with fucking grasshopper btw. the jokes just write themselves)
i'm in the scientific papers on root growth math rn................. if i could just feed it a data table instead of having to Think About This Growth Habit? WAIT. fuck i just remembered that really hot digital instructor that once said, "if you think there's an easier way to do it, there probably is.
look at this fucking forum
BRANCHING SCRIPT?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THERE WILL BE NO TREES LEFT. PLANET EARTH WILL SOON BE A CONTINUOUS LAYER OF WARM SEA WATER THAT IS SHALLOW ENOUGH TO STAND IN. BUT I WILL BE ABLE TO MODEL REALISTIC TREES. WE WILL HAVE THE DATA TO REMEMBER THEM.

This Week’s Horrible-Scopes
It’s time for this week’s Horrible-Scopes! So for those of you that know your Astrological Signs, cool! If not, just pick one, roll a D12, or just make it up as you go along. It really doesn’t matter. Better yet! Check out “Heart of the Game, Fredonia” and see if they can sell you those D12’s with the symbols on them. Tell them “Shujin Tribble” sentcha. And “Hail, Hail, Fredonia!” Home of the Blue Devil!
Just when you thought there was a cohesive plan for the Horrible-Scopes, that idea goes out the window. Yes there is a plan on HOW your ‘Scope came to be this week, but there’s no way to explain it easily. Try this explanation on for size: we rolled 12D12’s, each sign received a number, that number was used to search for music with that word in it, and finally your ‘Scope was born from that. With us so far? GREAT! Here we go!
Aries
We’re taking you out for a drink at a bar this week. Not because we want you drunk, but because we want you to pull a prank on the bartender. When they ask you what you want, ask if you can get, “A Grasshopper”. Now you’ll likely get a sudden glazed look from them for a few seconds, followed by one of two reactions. Either A) They’ll tell you to order something REAL or GTFO, or 2) They’ll eventually, slowly, smirk at you and make it, but likely at a premium price. So This Week… Whatever price they tell you, pay it and tip an extra fiver. When people ask what the hell you’re drinking, just tell them in your best deadpan voice, “It Is Green”.
Taurus
Ok, this time we’re just going to blatantly tell you - The song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas”? At the end of it, there are 364 gifts given. But here’s the BEST part: Since its inception in 1909 there have been SO MANY variations on the theme that you likely never knew about! So This Week… Sing it like this… Twelve Bulls a roaring, Eleven Badgers baiting, Ten Ships a sailing, nine Lambs a-bleating, Eight Hares a running, Seven Squabs a swimming, Six Ducks a-laying, A Golden Ring, Four Colly Birds, Three Fat hens, Two French hens, And The Sprig of a Juniper Tree! (Look, it’s the “Christmas In July ‘Scope” for you. Deal!)
Gemini
We know things have been rough on you lately, and we’re really expecting things to level off finally. But to get through this, you’ll need to get over yourself just a little because you’re suffering from Touch Starvation. No, you don’t need to go on some one-night stands, but you kinda do need to have some physical interactions. So This Week… Check your local listings, see if there’s a Cat Cafe in your vicinity, and book an hour’s time. And remember we said, “Cat Cafe”, not “Cat GIRL Cafe”.
Cancer Moon-Child
You need to brush up on your French. You want to go traveling out of the country, but you want to at least try to not be completely inept with language. Plus your cell phone’s data plan is going to charge you up the Yin-Yang if you want to use some translation service. So instead of buying a burner phone or relying on WIFI, just re-learn what you should still know from High School. So This Week… If you accidentally invite someone to go to bed with you while you’re in another country, be sure you’re asking the right person.
Leo
We get that you want to change jobs; want a new challenge, to get out of the rut you’re in, but looking to keep your pay rate. It’s not as easy to do as it used to be, but getting lateral promotions are still a thing. Just look up what your job’s typical compensation is, do some application farming, and see what comes up. If you get a chushie 9-to-5 in your pay-zone, see what your current company will do for you. If they’re unwilling to match it, skoot out and enjoy the new digs! So This Week… Well, we just told you. See if anyone’s willing to give you more for your special set of skills. OH! And No-Compete Clauses are totally unenforceable!
Virgo
You need to sample some booze this week. Obviously NOT if you’re a recovering alcoholic, of course. But if you’re not, now's as good a time as any to try something new. Don’t get beer or wine or vodka or tequila; Nothing that’s your typical Frat-Party Drink. Get something with a little class for a change. So This Week… FINE! You want “wine” but are willing to try a twist on it? Get some Sherry then.
Libra
Before you start thinking you know what’s coming your way, just know that even The Stars didn’t know what to do for you. But there’s a plan that’ll be worthwhile. Normally we wouldn’t suggest feeding a bad mood, but we can make a suggestion that’ll be fun at least. So This Week… Buy a box of Hershey's Chocolate Bars - it comes out to about a dollar a bar - and freeze them. See if you can drop them on a tabletop, breaking them into just two pieces. It might take several attempts, so be glad you got the 36 pack.
Scorpio
There is an old adage: Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right. Three Rights Make A Left. We’ll pause for a few seconds so you can work that one out. (*Pause*) Ok, good. Now. We’re sending you on a road trip to New Jersey to visit Hot Dog Johnny's in Buttzville. YES, that’s a real place! It’s a roadside landmark that serves only hot dogs and French fries plus birch beer in frosted mugs! So This Week… Don’t try to make a Left Turn on Jersey Thorofares. You can only make Three Rights. You’ll see when you get there.
Sagittarius
Over the years there have been many variations on the Spider-Man theme, from the 1967 cartoon series to the 1977 live-action TV version. And, sure, there’s been all kinds of gritty or pop tunes made for him, but inevitably they all come back to the ‘67 classic for a reason. It’s the simple Rock-n-Roll, Blues, A-A-B-C style that’s just burned into our collective consciousness. So This Week… If you want to enjoy the classic as a punk version, grab 1995’s “Saturday Morning: Cartoons' Greatest Hits” album and listen to The Ramones taking a stab at it!
Capricorn
There are signs all over the place, all trying to distract you from what you need to do. Did you see the 1988 movie “They Live”? If you didn’t, you really need to see it! If you thought “Idiocracy” was too over-the-top trying to describe how humanity would devolve in 500 years, watch “They Live” and understand that it was written as a similar warning about 1980’s capitalism strangling society. So This Week… If someone offers you a set of sunglasses, Take Them!
Aquarius
Summer School is in and you need a Geography Pop Quiz: What city became the capital of the Roman Empire during the reign of Constantine the Great in 330 c.e.? (*PAUSE*) Time’s Up! Now, we would have accepted Byzantium, Nova Roma, Basileuousa (Queen of Cities), Megalopolis (the Great City), Polis (The City), or even Miklagarðr (the Big City in Norse). There are some of you who are now upset that we didn’t give a point for using either of the names used in a song by The Four Lads or They Might Be Giants. That’s because we asked what city BECAME - not what the city was named after it became the capital. So This Week… If you paid more attention in class we wouldn’t have to go through Summer School with you all over again. Now open your geography book to Chapter Seven and read up about Leif Erikson. And NO! He did NOT start a Cell Phone Company!
Pisces
Nobody wants to hear you say it, but you’re gunna. Not only are you right but we agree! Ol’ Billy Shakespear WAS a hack and used every cliche’ in the book! There’s no way someone like him could have come up with all those new words and terms and expressions and names while needing to have everything printed TWICE in a book so that it could be understood. If he was so damned good as a writer, how come no one can understand him? HMM?! So This Week… Have you ever tried to tame a shrew? Have you ever SEEN one? They’re like little mice, only different. You ever even HEARD of someone who’s tried to train one? Yeah, we didn’t think so.
And THOSE are your Horrible-Scopes for this week! Remember if you liked what you got, we’re obviously not working hard enough at these. BUT! If you want a better or nastier one for your own sign or someone else’s, all you need to do to bribe me is just Let Me Know - or check out the Ko-Fi page ( https://ko-fi.com/icarusthelunarguard )! These will be posted online at the end of each week via Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Discord, and BLUESKY.

In this blog post, we'll delve into valuable tips and tricks to help Rhino Grasshopper users make the most of this powerful toolset.
Mastering the Basics: Before diving into advanced techniques, it's crucial to have a solid understanding of the basics of Rhino and Grasshopper. Familiarize yourself with the interface, core functionalities, and the relationship between Rhino's 3D modeling environment and Grasshopper's visual programming canvas. This foundational knowledge sets the stage for more efficient and effective parametric design.
Utilize Pre-Built Components: [Rhino Grasshopper] comes equipped with a vast library of pre-built components that perform specific functions. Rather than reinventing the wheel, explore and leverage these components to streamline your workflow. From basic geometric shapes to complex mathematical operations, these pre-built components can save time and effort.
Organize Your Grasshopper Definitions: As your designs become more complex, organization is key to maintaining a clear and efficient workflow. Group related components, use descriptive names, and color-code wires to visually organize your Grasshopper definitions. This practice not only enhances readability but also makes it easier to troubleshoot and modify designs.
Take Advantage of Data Trees: Understanding and effectively using data trees in Grasshopper can significantly improve workflow efficiency. Data trees allow you to manage and manipulate hierarchical data structures. By grasping this concept, you can efficiently handle arrays, lists, and branches within your designs, leading to more robust and adaptable parametric models.
Custom Scripting with C# and Python: For advanced users, custom scripting in languages like C# and Python can unlock additional capabilities within [Rhino Grasshopper]. Notes from the AHWM Explanation Livestream
This will be long, so fair warning! If you're on computer, you can press the spacebar to skip this post if you want!
There was CG smoke for the bomb
The last shot was running after the bomb goes off, filmed during the day
Many cursed images
(0:56 - Guns Blazing) November 5th = gunpowder treason & plot (a reference)
Ethan is the one yelling during the run
Helicopter/Car was filmed in a place formerly known as Spiderwoods (spiders, snakes, and bugs everywhere)
Mark's patented method to get rid of snakes is to tell them to fuck off
There was big black snake near the library
Chica snore-grumbles
Most of the choices were pretty evenly split in the video data
The guy who owned the field in Helicopter/Car also owned the helicopter
It was hard to get the cameraman to know that the camera is an interacting character
They filmed up to 10 pages a day
Prison was the first 2 days of shooting, as well as the part with the most characters/extras (12 people)
Mick gets typecasted in roles of authority
The Prison location is a functioning mental hospital
John was a Prisoner, first mate, and is a realtor IRL
There is no "why" to recording this to keep a broad audience and have fun after Mark was in a depression and made WKM
The Gregory Brothers / Schmoyoho made 2 renditions of I Don't Wanna Be Free (which is on Apple/iTunes/Spotify)
The musical was a production/recording nightmare on the 2nd day
They had 20 minutes max. to learn each segment; they had a choreographer helping them learn the dances
The original vocals didn't have the accent
Mark had to do the vocals, acting, blocking, etc. in 30 mins
Mick was supposed to cross frame during the top-hats-part, but they had already recorded it; the producers weren't comfortable telling Mark "no" yet, so they had Amy do it
The smashed bricks were styrofoam; Mark was typed to a rope that was pulled
The director of photography was Phillip J Roy; he took a pay cut to work on this project
Yancy's sleeve tattoo is the whole map again
Yancy's tattoos are Tiny Box Tim and Mark/Dark across his knuckles; those were Makeup's ideas
The Musical was only 1/4 of a recording day
There was 3 work weeks of shooting (15 days)
Day By Dave made a remix
Yancy was named "Prison Mark" until the fight scene started to be made in post-production, where he needed a name; Mark liked Yancy and Amy was very against it originally
Yancy killed both of his parents; Mark knew people were gonna fall in love with him anyway
"Yancy stans, go, march on"
Yancy has an emoji bandaid
Heapass (canonically) makes an appearance in Thanks and also Yes Please; he had "Heapass" on a cast, but it was on the wrong side from the camera
Holt Boggs (the cell guard) is an amazing man; he was overqualified ("soft hands")
The cell was in a green-screen soundstage, so there was more improve
Yancy was supposed to be hidden in the ceiling or beside the bed, but under the bed turned out better; he's hidden under the bed the whole scene
The Red Gemini was the camera that they used for this project
Mark just runs off frame in Thanks and also Yes Please
The audio-only part was very convenient for filming and fitting for a 1st-person perspective
Yancy's talk at the gate was Mark real-acting & the late shot of the 1st day of filming, which made all of them realize that the project could actually work
Yancy WANTS to be in prison; he knows all the ways out - he'd leave if he wanted to
The items in the box are more representational achievements
Mark needs our help to promote AHWM, through liking the video(s), commenting good things, and spreading the project; the performance of this dictates the ability to make another similar project
Mark worked for FREE for 5 months, taking no cut of the budget for himself
"Yancy is just Prison Mark with amnesia" "There could be a time-skip there; it could work"
Robert Rex, "a god walking amongst mere morals;" has always wearing the same thing; Mark didn't know that he was going to do different accents
Amy is the hand with the feather-duster
The Warden's desk moves into the hallway after a smash-cut
Mick's line had to be rewritten so it can be ambiguous; you can only tell if you were looking
The Warden embodies "big strong hands," something Mark writes into dialogue a lot (along with "trust you me"); everytime he touches something it cracks (his desk, Yancy's shoulder)
Pulling stuff from behind Mark's back was on-the-spot
The dirt joke was a prop-person and Mark throwing buckets
Mark helped Holt Boggs make a short video
HOLT BOGGS
The truck in Prison was a one-take-wonder; they actually bashed the truck through the wall in a such a cartoony, perfect way
The Bob/Wade skit was a reference to Prop Hunt
Mark comparing the disappointment of people not liking the video to a cup of dirt under the Christmas tree
The lid to the sewer says "a heist with markiplier"
The sewer was in an actual sewer treatment plant, which took about a week of filming; some parts were flooded so they couldn't film there; this place was scheduled to be torn down
Mark forces us to choose the Light Tunnel first
Cranbersher, GrittySugar, and Lixian collaborated for the Light Tunnel; it was originally going to be live action with a green-screen and a pre-made raft; Cranberser offered when he had a 3-month break from other projects
Amy notes that Mark did a lot of "falling"
Mark had to carry a 200 pound man and a heavy camera rig to carry Y/N
There was poison ivy, snakes, spiders, etc. on the island
The Game Grumps voiced the aliens; Erin originally was meant to play the Warden & Danny was meant to play one of the guards
Many roles fluctuated due to scheduling
Getting abducted is a reference to ADWM ("not again!")
Mark loves MatPat's scenes and acting (Build a Shelter)
There were so many mosquitos near the Cave and the actors couldn't put on bug spray because they had to preserve their makeups
There was a giant hole in the Cave from which grasshoppers rained down
They were a mile into the cave; they weren't able to staff them for 3 days, so they recorded for 2 days and had fo cut some shots
The Cave freeze-frame was unscripted; the camera director didn't tell cut and it was too funny
The Hermit was originally supposed to be Jacksepticeye but scheduling errors were in the way
Mick was originally supposed to be Crazy Ed
When the sound-guy didnt have a sound effect, one of them riffed something at the mic and it was modulated to fit as best as possible
Mark's camera loses signal/battery power
Mark has done the hot-wire-while-moving in Car before (van videos)
The blue flash during Car is you from the future/another timeline
Mark was actually driving the car; someone flashed the blue light so it was a bit dangerous
Tyler and Ethan make appearances as Zombies
Tyler actually let Mark hit him with a rock
There was a dead beaver in the shed during the Zombie Apocalypse
The Zombie Apocalypse shots were in VERY hot weather
The barricaded front door but very open back door was intentional humour
Ethan's zombie handshake was thought up on the spot
Moe was the man screaming from the fire and zombie attack, making everyone behind the camera laugh
Rosanna Pansino sings opera & speaks Chinese
The Scientist had to be broken up (the cuts are in the gunshots)
243 is a chemical identification symbol in an actual laboratory, nothing meaningful to the plot
The code leads to the AHWM website
What's truly inside the box is the real timeline, which is the team making the project
The room where the monitor was in (Amy, script manager, etc.) was locked out and no one could see what was going on, only hear it through headsets
Mark threw 2 dummies (main video, Absolutely Not!)
Chica likes to climb through the cords underneath Mark's desk
The true/canon ending is For The Greater Good, which leads to ADWM
SodaPopIn hasn't really done this before, but he went with it because he was told Mark was nice; he continued even during harsh weather, many planes, and a long take/monologue
The sandwiches are a callback to ADWM
The montage endings were inspired by the ones Amy made for ADWM
There was never any time set aside to get photos for the montages, so they had to continuously get pictures
Catherine makes an appearance in the Warfstache bit
Warfstache is just a meta joke > you respond by writing in the comments as a survey, producer Catherine is more powerful than the video-editing, ringing the bell for notifications
They rented the same place for the Warfstache bit that they used to film all the other previous Warfstache bits
Dark inserts himself wherever he feels like being
There is charity (#TeamTrees) merch for each of the egos/Mark characters in this project (including the new ones)
Edge of Sleep's last episode aired yesterday (as of the stream - 6/11/19)
A "reverse" charity livestream is happening soon
The next project(s) are already in the works
SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT HEIST
Amy originally wasn't going to work on this project until they went to Texas; she became Creative Producer once Mark put himself into too many places
Iba originally auditioned for the man in the burning truck, but his voice was so good he became the seer/guide
The project has been "cooking" since May
The next project would be a completely different project, not a continuation
SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT HEIST
Regular uploads start again tomorrow (7/11/19)

Power Rider A.R.K
Tumblr media
The Ares Base on Mars worked like a dream, the entire red planet has been terraformed. Five cities have been built on the planet (Ares City, Tyr City, Shiva City, Ishtar City and Horus City) and the population has grown to 20,000. For the first time in its history Mars has breathable air and flowing water. Plants and trees cover its surface between the rising cities. A project on Mars called Project ARK is in charge of storing data on Earth's animals should something happen to the blue planet. The data is collected in devices known as A.R.Ks (Animal Recreation Keys). However a shadowy organization called Regenesis rises to use Mars as their personal experiment. By using the A.R.Ks they intend to create a new breed of humanity by splicing them with the animal DNA. They begin this plan by capturing and exposing people to corrupted A.R.Ks turning them into monsters called Bersarks. The Bersarks are animal like monsters capable of “infecting” other people and turning them into drones (streamlined versions of themselves with smaller weapons). Regenesis sends the Bersarks out to cause mayhem so they can gather data for their experiments. When a Bersark is defeated they and their drones are returned to normal. The Council of Mars (the governing body made up of two representatives from each Martian City) selects a group to fight this threat as Power Riders A.R.K Riders

Pierce- Zaler- 15,000 years ago Mars was full of life and at war. Warring factions devastated the surface of the planet. The son of one of the commanders learned his father planned to activate a super weapon that would end the war and tried to stop him. Enraged at what he considered treason the father had his son sealed in stasis. Sure enough the super weapon ended all life on Mars. In the present day the son, now the only surviving Martian, awoke from his stasis. Using his biomechanical nature he tapped into computer systems and learned about humanity and what happened during his stasis. He also created his own A.R.K system belt and used the tech to create A.R.Ks based on now extinct Mars animals, the Duorn (A two horned rhino like animal) and the Zamzon Beetle (a cat sized beetle) Upon encountering the Riders and Regenesis he comments how fitting it was humanity named Mars after a war god before engaging in battle. He intends to stop the fighting no matter the cost. Even if he must face off against both sides alone. Due to his biomechanical nature he is able to temporarily copy the abilities of other A.R.Ks About a month after his awakening he hacks into the Mars communications and announces that any colonists willing to escape the conflict are free to follow him and live as his people did. Lena is one of those who choose to follow him. As leader of this new colony, named Zeelen after the original name of Mars, he continues to battle both the Riders and Regenesis willing to do whatever it takes to prevent another war. He even creates A.R.Ks of his own for his followers to use based on the Bandor Crab. Transformation Device: Mars System Transformation Call: [Accessing Data: Duorn! Accessing Data: Zamzon!] Let’s Ride! Extinction- Adam Manning- The leader of Regenesis Adam sees a future in which humanity destroys itself leaving Earth in ashes. To prevent such a disaster he created Regenesis seeking to improve upon humanity. On Mars he puts his plans into action by stealing the A.R.K technology and experimenting on captured people creating the Bersarks. In time he grows disappointed with the failure of the Bersarks and the Regenesis riders. The appearance of Zaler inspires Adam to seek answers within Mars itself and he discovers the weapon that caused the extinction of all life on Mars. With this find his plans shift. No longer will he seek to prevent the end of life. He intends to use this weapon to wipe out all life on Earth leaving Regenesis to repopulate the earth with a new breed of humanity and himself as ruler. He orders his scientists to create a belt for himself and enters the battle field as Extinction. Extinction has the power to destroy A.R.Ks leaving only dust. When his followers discover his plan the Regenesis Riders desert him joining with the A.R.K Riders to stop his madness. He welcomes the chance to weed out those disloyal to him. Transformation Device: Extinction System Transformation Call: [Accessing Data: EXTINCT!] Let’s Ride! Transformation: Skeletons of various animals emerge from the belt screaming in horror as they form the suit. Finishing Move: Extinct___ - A powerful ____ charged by the power of extinction. Face Claim: TR Knight Bersarks Bersark Level I These are created when Regenesis abducts people and forces them to transform using the A.R.Ks. Once transformed the person loses control of themself and is unable to return to human form. The only way to reverse the transformation is to defeat them in battle, this will damage the A.R.K enough to cancel the transformation while leaving the person relatively unharmed. These Bersark are also able to create drones by infecting other people. Once the main Bersark is defeated the drones are reverted as well. Level I Bersarks include: Mantis Iguana Panther Squid Bat Snail Frog Elephant Buzzard Bersark Level II This level of Bersark are created once Regenesis creates their own system to better handle the power of the A.R.Ks. These Bersark are people loyal to Regenesis. Once transformed they retain their minds and are much stronger than the previous level. They are also able to transform between forms at will. However this form lacks the ability to create drones. Level II Bersarks include: Buffalo Whale Lion Penguin Panda Kangaroo Spider Giraffe Rhino Beetle Stag Beetle Power Rider Paradox/A.R.K: After obtaining a damaged X Rider Disc Regenesis uses it to steal some of Anima’s power creating Anima X. Seeing reports of a new X-Rider, Paradox arrives on Mars to help Noah regain his full power.

The United States ranks last among 46 countries for trust in news (Reuters Institute) Trust in news worldwide grew slightly in the wake of the pandemic, according to the Reuters Institute’s annual Digital News Report. But not in the United States—it was one of the few countries that did not see an increase in trust from 2020 to 2021, and the percentage of Americans who trust news overall—29%—was the lowest among the 46 markets surveyed. The long-predicted end of the “Trump Bump” showed up clearly in the research, with Americans’ interest in news declining by 11%. National news outlets like The Washington Post, The New York Times, CNN and MSNBC have all seen significant dips in their audience numbers.
Western drought brings another woe: voracious grasshoppers (AP) A punishing drought in the U.S. West is drying up waterways, sparking wildfires and leaving farmers scrambling for water. Next up: a plague of voracious grasshoppers. Federal agriculture officials are launching what could become their largest grasshopper-killing campaign since the 1980s amid an outbreak of the drought-loving insects that cattle ranchers fear will strip bare public and private rangelands. In central Montana’s Phillips County, more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the nearest town, Frank Wiederrick said large numbers of grasshoppers started showing up on prairie surrounding his ranch in recent days. Already they’re beginning to denude trees around his house. “They’re everywhere,” Wiederrick said. “Drought and grasshoppers go together and they are cleaning us out.”
Condo building partially collapses in Miami-Dade (Washington Post) A large oceanfront condo building near Miami Beach partially collapsed early Thursday morning, killing at least one person, injuring another 10 or more and prompting a mass search-and-rescue response as 51 people remain unaccounted for. Dozens of units from police and fire agencies rushed to Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Fla., at 1:30 a.m. after the northeast corridor of the building collapsed, assistant fire chief Ray Jadallah said. Rescuers evacuated 35 people from the 12-story building, including two recovered from the rubble. Fifty-five of the more than 130 units were destroyed. The partial collapse came one day after the building had passed inspection.
Calls grow to evacuate Afghans to Guam as US troops leave (AP) In the chaotic, final hours of the Vietnam War, the U.S. evacuated thousands of South Vietnamese who supported the American mission and were at risk under the communist government. With U.S. and NATO forces facing a Sept. 11 deadline to leave Afghanistan, many are recalling that desperate, hasty exodus as they urge the Biden administration to evacuate thousands of Afghans who worked as interpreters or otherwise helped U.S. military operations there in the past two decades. Despite unusual bipartisan support in Congress, the administration hasn’t agreed to such a move, declining to publicly support something that could undermine security in the country as it unwinds a war that started after the 9/11 attacks. The Biden administration for now is focusing on accelerating a special visa program for Afghans who helped U.S. operations. Even if the legislation passed immediately, the number of visas would fall far short of the estimated 18,000 Afghans waiting to be processed. And the average wait is more than three years. The process also has been hampered by the coronavirus pandemic, which led the U.S. embassy in Afghanistan to suspend visa interviews.
Footage of Amazon destroying thousands of unsold items in Britain prompts calls for official investigation (Washington Post) British lawmakers are demanding a meeting with tech giant Amazon’s country manager after an investigation at a warehouse in Scotland revealed that thousands of unsold or returned items—including televisions, books, sealed face masks and laptops—were being destroyed by the company. Footage from the undercover investigation by ITV News at a warehouse in the Scottish town of Dunfermline, also showed drones, headphones, jewelry and countless other high-value products being placed into boxes labeled “destroy,” before huge trucks were followed carrying the stock to landfill sites and recycling centers. One ex-employee told ITV News that workers were expected to get rid of an estimated 130,000 items a week. The broadcaster described the practice as “waste on an astonishing level.” Amazon operates 175 centers worldwide, spanning more than 150 million square feet of space where employees prepare items to be shipped and delivered to customers around-the-clock. ITV News noted that the reason for the destruction of the goods may be attributable to Amazon’s business model. Companies worldwide store items in warehouses owned by the online shopping giant. However, if the items fail to sell, they are charged rising fees that some may struggle to pay, leading to piles of goods that need to be stored—or dumped—elsewhere. Many Britons, also concerned by the investigation, demanded to know why items that appeared to be in good condition were being dumped when vulnerable people or charities could have used the goods.
Black Sea tensions (Foreign Policy) Russia complained on Wednesday of a “blatant British provocation” in the Black Sea, as a British Navy vessel sailed near the Crimean peninsula on its way to port in Georgia. Both sides contest the facts of the incident: The Russian Defense Ministry said it fired warning shots near the British ship and dropped four bombs in its way, while the British Defense Ministry said no such obstruction occurred. A BBC journalist on board the British ship said he heard shots “out of range,” and that Russian military planes shadowed the vessel. Tensions in the area are expected to remain high as NATO conducts military exercises in the Black Sea starting on Monday.
It’s 118 Degrees in Siberia (Vice) The Arctic Circle is known for viciously cold winter temperatures that can cause frostbite within minutes—but this summer, parts of the area are so hot that touching the ground could burn your skin. The Siberian town of Verkhojansk recorded ground temperatures of 118 degrees on Monday, according to the European Union’s Earth Observation Programme. The agency’s satellites captured images of the record-breaking heat wave gripping the Russian north. The Siberian town of Saskylah saw an all-time peak ground temperature of 90 degrees, and other towns recorded temperatures near 110 degrees, according to the EU’s space agency. The World Meteorology Organization highlighted how dire the situation is in the Arctic, which is warming more than two times quicker than the global average. The fast rate is caused by a phenomenon called “Arctic amplification,” or the domino effect of the region’s highly reflective snow, large water volume, and fragile ecosystem. The high temperatures are causing wildfires in the Arctic too. As early as April, wildfires began to spark across Siberia, and got so bad the smoke could be seen from space, according to NASA imagery. In 2020, Siberia was also hit by record-breaking hot temperatures, dating back to 1885, according to National Geographic. “For a long time, we’ve been saying we’re going to get more extremes like strong heat waves,” Ruth Mottram, a climate scientist at the Danish Meteorological Institute, told National Geographic in 2020. “It’s a little like the projections are coming true, and sooner than we might have thought.”
Afghan government could collapse six months after US troops withdraw (The Hill) Afghanistan’s government could collapse as quickly as six months after all U.S. troops withdraw from the country, according to new analysis from the U.S. intelligence community. The latest intelligence assessment, reported by The Wall Street Journal, said that the Afghan government, led by President Ashraf Ghani, could collapse between six to 12 months after all American forces are pulled from the country. Some other officials, however, said that the government could fall as soon as three months after the U.S.’s withdrawal from Afghanistan is finished, the Journal reported. Previous analysis, the newspaper noted, said that Afghanistan’s government could stand for as long as two years after the American troops leave.
China’s borders (Foreign Policy) China’s borders will remain closed to most visitors until at least the second half of 2022 over concerns of further COVID-19 outbreaks imported from abroad. Chinese officials are reportedly worried about two sensitive events: the Beijing Winter Olympics and the formal conferral of an unprecedented third term for Chinese President Xi Jinping near the end of 2022. It’s possible some restrictions will remain until after the annual Two Sessions in early 2023. But the move may also reflect China’s lack of confidence in its own vaccines. Although its domestic vaccination program has been highly successful, with more than 1 billion doses administered, case data from other countries shows the Chinese vaccines aren’t doing a good job at preventing the spread of the virus, particularly the spread of new variants.
China says after massed drills that Taiwan’s future lies in ‘reunification’ (Reuters) Taiwan needs to be clearly aware that its future lies in “reunification” with China and that it cannot rely on the United States, China’s military said on Thursday, responding to questions on a massed incursion by Chinese warplanes last week. Twenty-eight Chinese air force aircraft, including fighters and nuclear-capable bombers, entered Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ) last Tuesday, the largest number to date reported by the Chinese-claimed island’s government. The incident came shortly after Group of Seven leaders issued a joint statement scolding China for a series of issues and underscoring the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, comments China condemned as “slander”.
Japan proposes four-day working week to improve work-life balance (DW) Japan is attempting to buck its “salaryman” stereotype and improve the work-life balance of its citizens in new economic policy guidelines that recommend a move to a four-day workweek. The Japanese government cited increased employee retention, especially for those caring for children or older relatives, as an incentive for employers to adopt the policy. Japanese authorities are hoping an extra day off per week will lead its citizens to solve even more societal problems: By using the time to do more shopping to boost the economy and by giving young people more time to socialize, which may, eventually, boost the country’s sluggish birth rate. However, there is concern that management will be reluctant to do away with some of the attitudes towards business that have served Japan Inc. so well for generations—even if there is clear evidence that traditional approaches are less effective than they were in the past. Employees, on the other hand, find the idea of a shorter working week appealing, but they do worry about reduced wages and accusations that they are not fully committed to their company.
Settlement Is Reached Over Stuck Ship That Blocked Suez Canal in Egypt (NYT) The owner and insurers of the enormous container ship that blocked the Suez Canal for six days in March and disrupted global shipping have reached a settlement with the Egyptian authorities, one of the insurers said on Wednesday. The insurer’s statement did not specify the amount, but said that once the settlement was formalized, the ship—after nearly three months of haggling, finger-pointing and court hearings—would finally complete its journey through the canal. Since the ship was freed in a huge salvage effort in March, about six days after running aground across the Suez, the canal authority had been locked in an often acrimonious standoff with the ship’s owner and operators over what the authority said it was owed for the incident. The authority had sought up to $1 billion in compensation.

Awkward Fruits - Digital Fabrication
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An ap-peeling sight
Materials/Tools used: Laser-cutting, bamboo paper
Process: As I was researching about clay printing I came across a book called Advanced 3D Printing with Grasshopper: Clay and FDM. This introduced me to grasshopper a rhino plugin in which I was already very intrigued. I decided that I wanted to incorporate grasshopper in my rhino creative process. I was very interested in Voronoi patterns and how they reminded me of the fruit MRI scans that we were looking at, especially how the scan processes in real-time the shapes expand and contract, the voronoi pattern to me is almost an illusion of this action. Delving into grasshopper was particularly challenging for me. Initially, I wanted to emboss or engrave this Voronoi pattern into a banana or even print a banana that had a negative and positive imprint of this pattern that would join together. Unfortunately, I soon discovered that Grasshopper’s surface function is only compatible with a planar surface, which made the whole process extremely difficult to carry out as I’m still a novice. I experimented in many different ways and realised that I would have to conduct further research and carry on in another experiment as I was running out of time to complete my experiments. I decide to laser cut a Voronoi pattern into a banana and it would be very relevant to the project and a few keywords we were honing into - organic and engraved. I created the pattern keeping in mind a project from creative technologies that I really enjoyed called data objects. The project’s aim was to create an object that could visualise data in a unique and informative way. With this in mind, I created the pattern based on data I found about the yield a banana tree produces annually. But alas I ran into another problem, the pattern in the illustrator file was filled with hundreds of double lines and required a lot of cleaning up, something that would require more time than anticipated and out of worry for messing up a perfectly good banana, I decided to laser cut into bamboo paper something that was still organic and could be engraved into. Luckily the paper could handle the double lines and created a really wonderful multi-monotoned colour palette of burnt ambers and Sienna. The paper is quite thin allowed for light to shine behind the paper and it made us think of insect wings, water droplets on a spiders web. And on the topic of fruit, it reminded me of a cross-section of fruit almost as if you were to look at the fruit from under a microscope. I was quite pleased but also surprised with how this experiment turned out as it seemed that my expectation were always met with an obstacle but I managed to create something that made me think about other options and other ways I could reach a similar outcome to what I had initially planned. If I were to iterate on this experiment further, I would have loved to use a material that related to a banana, maybe using banana leaves or somehow making paper from fibres from banana trees.

Giant brood of billions of insects set to emerge in US in mass synchronized event
A big event in the insect world is approaching. Starting sometime in April or May, depending on latitude, one of the largest broods of 17-year cicadas will emerge from underground in a dozen states, from New York west to Illinois and south into northern Georgia. This group is known as Brood X, as in the Roman numeral for 10.
For about four weeks, wooded and suburban areas will ring with cicadas’ whistling and buzzing mating calls. After mating, each female will lay hundreds of eggs in pencil-sized tree branches.
Then the adult cicadas will die. Once the eggs hatch, new cicada nymphs fall from the trees and burrow back underground, starting the cycle again.
There are perhaps 3,000 to 4,000 species of cicadas around the world, but the 13- and 17-year periodical cicadas of the eastern US appear to be unique in combining long juvenile development times with synchronized, mass adult emergences.
These events raise many questions for entomologists and the public alike. What do cicadas do underground for 13 or 17 years? What do they eat? Why are their life cycles so long? Why are they synchronized? And is climate change affecting this wonder of the insect world?
We study periodical cicadas to understand questions about biodiversity, biogeography, behavior and ecology – the evolution, natural history and geographic distribution of life. We’ve learned many surprising things about these insects: For example, they can travel through time by changing their life cycles in four-year increments. It’s no accident that the scientific name for periodical 13- and 17-year cicadas is Magicicada, shortened from “magic cicada”.

Natural history
As species, periodical cicadas are older than the forests that they inhabit. Molecular analysis has shown that about 4 million years ago, the ancestor of the current Magicicada species split into two lineages. Some 1.5 million years later, one of those lineages split again. The resulting three lineages are the basis of the modern periodical cicada species groups, Decim, Cassini, and Decula.
Early American colonists first encountered periodical cicadas in Massachusetts. The sudden appearance of so many insects reminded them of biblical plagues of locusts, which are a type of grasshopper. That’s how the name “locust” became incorrectly associated with cicadas in North America.
During the 19th century, notable entomologists such as Benjamin Walsh, CV Riley, and Charles Marlatt worked out the astonishing biology of periodical cicadas. They established that unlike locusts or other grasshoppers, cicadas don’t chew leaves, decimate crops, or fly in swarms.
Instead, these insects spend most of their lives out of sight, growing underground and feeding on plant roots as they pass through five juvenile stages. Their synchronized emergences are predictable, occurring on a clockwork schedule of 17 years in the North and 13 years in the South and Mississippi Valley. There are multiple, regional year classes, known as broods.

Safety in numbers
The key feature of Magicicada biology is that these insects emerge in huge numbers. This increases their chances of accomplishing their key mission above ground: finding mates.
Dense emergences also provide what scientists call a predator-satiation defense. Any predator that feeds on cicadas, whether it’s a fox, squirrel, bat or bird, will eat its fill long before it consumes all of the insects in the area, leaving many survivors behind.
While periodical cicadas largely come out on schedule every 17 or 13 years, often a small group emerges four years early or late. Early-emerging cicadas may be faster-growing individuals who had access to abundant food, and the laggards may be individuals that subsisted with less.
If growing conditions change over time, having the ability to make this kind of life cycle switch and come out either four years early in favorable times or four years late in more difficult times becomes important.
If a sudden warm or cold phase causes a large number of cicadas to make a one-time mistake and come out off-schedule by four years, the insects can emerge in sufficient numbers to satiate predators and shift to a new schedule.

Census time for Brood X
As glaciers retreated from what is now the US some 10,000 to 20,000 years ago, periodical cicadas filled eastern forests. Temporary life cycle switching has formed a complex mosaic of broods.
Today there are 12 broods of 17-year periodical cicadas in northeastern deciduous forests, where trees drop leaves in winter. These groups are numbered sequentially and fit together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. In the Southeast and the Mississippi Valley there are three broods of 13-year cicadas.
Because periodical cicadas are sensitive to climate, the patterns of their broods and species reflect climatic shifts. For example, genetic and other data from our work indicate that the 13-year species Magicicada neotredecim, which is found in the upper Mississippi Valley, formed shortly after the last glaciation.
As the environment warmed, 17-year cicadas in the area emerged successively, generation after generation, after 13 years underground until they were permanently shifted to a 13-year cycle.
But it’s not clear whether cicadas can continue to evolve as quickly as humans alter their environment. Although periodical cicadas prefer forest edges and thrive in suburban areas, they cannot survive deforestation or reproduce in areas without trees.
Indeed, some broods have already become extinct. In the late 19th century, one brood (XXI) disappeared from north Florida and Georgia. Another (XI) has been extinct in northeast Connecticut since around 1954, and a third (VII) in upstate New York has shrunk from eight counties to one since mapping first began in the mid-1800s.
Climate change could also have far-reaching effects. As the US climate warms, longer growing seasons may provide a larger food supply. This may eventually change more 17-year cicadas into 13-year cicadas, just as past warming altered Magicicada neotredecim.
Large-scale early emergences occurred in 2017 in Cincinnati and the Baltimore-Washington metro area, and in 1969, 2003, and 2020 in the Chicago metro area – potential harbingers of this kind of change.
Researchers need detailed high-quality information to track cicada distributions over time. Citizen scientists play a key role in this effort because periodical cicada populations are so large and their adult emergences only last a few weeks.
Volunteers who want to help document Brood X’s emergence this spring can download the Cicada Safari mobile phone app, provide snapshots, and follow our research in real time online at www.cicadas.uconn.edu. Don’t miss out – the next opportunity won’t come until Broods XIII and XIX emerge in 2024.
