REVIEWING THIS WHOLE BAG OF RUBBER BUGS:

I mentioned recently that bags of cheap rubber bugs are harder to come by in real stores, but that there are a few options for them online. I just received this set from Aliexpress that’s currently only $4 with free shipping, you might even find the same set cheaper since there’s multiple listings for it, but I can verify this source is using an accurate photo and I am now going to REVIEW THEM:

SPIDER: obligatory, all-purpose spider, ambiguous species, noodly legs, minimal paint application, 3/5

COCKROACH: nice silky black coloration on the back, tan on the underside, rather haphazard leg pose, I like it but in terms of objective quality it’s unfortunately a 2/5 compared to other fake roaches and even to other bugs in this set.

DRAGONFLIES: so this set is definitely pieced together from what were once multiple different rubber bug sets, but I can also confirm that you always get the same selection I’m reviewing, which includes several redundancies. You get both a large and small dragonfly with entirely different sculpts, the smaller one more accurately sculpted but not as dynamically painted! Both I’d give a 3/5, adequate dragonflies

ORTHOPTERA: you get a cricket AND two different styles of grasshopper! The big, detailed black and red cricket is crudely painted but very unique, 3.5/5. The small grasshopper is cute and inoffensive, barely painted, 3/5. The large grasshopper is a 4/5 for me because while I’ve seen plenty like it, it has a really nice gradient from lime green to a darker grassier green that I just find very pleasant.

BEES: two very differently sculpted bees, and they both use a sparkly metallic gold with black stripes. Both deserve a 4/5.

ANTS: collectively I’m gonna say these are a 3.5/5, on their own very plain but I like that together you have a dull yellow-tan ant with comical googly eyes and a bigger, more ominous shiny black ant with spooky red eyes. I like that the black ant is also tied with a couple others as the largest bug in the set. It’s actually only slightly larger than the real life Giant Amazonian ant, Dinoponera, which is also entirely black.

MANTIDS: excellent choice for another double bug, I like the simple cheapness of the little one with its awkwardly sculpted forelegs but to fair it’s a 2/5 compared to the 4/5 of the larger, red-eyed mantis which has more of that “sparkly” paint style!

SCORPIONS: the only other arachnids in the set, and it’s amazing they included two different scorpions but only one spider. Trust me when I say that’s the most radical maverick decision a rubber bug set has ever made in the history of mankind. The small red scorpion is alright, a 3 I guess. The larger one has only six legs which is not accurate (the claws of a scorpion are modified mouthparts, not legs!) but I can’t look at its little black eyes and not want to cry so 5/5 actually.

CICADA: not terribly common in these! Charming, chunky brown cicada, though the thorax piece is so transparent you can always see the hole it plugs into. At one time, this sculpt may have been part of a higher quality set that actually painted over this design flaw. 4/5 regardless.

FLY: there’s a pattern here in which almost every flying insect in the set has a gold-brown base, which I’m not a big fan of. Sadly I’m overall neutral on this fly, normally my favorite of all the basic insects, perhaps because it looks just as much like some sort of wasp. It’s definitely a fly due to having only one pair of wings, and plenty of flies look exactly like this, but I’d just be a bigger fan if it was a chunkier, larger-eyed blowfly or horsefly. 2.5/5

UNKNOWN: there are actually several insects this could possibly represent including a few Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera, but the one insect it most closely resembles is an adult caddisfly. I like it, but it’s difficult to fairly judge it with no certain identification so 3/5 has to do.

HAWKMOTH: stellar choice! I’ve seen only one cheap-grade plastic hawkmoth in my whole life, actually! Several hawkmoths are even clear-winged, though those usually still have dark markings around the wing edges. Would’ve been more accurate to some real species if they just cast the wings in a solid color, but that’s a trivial criticism. 5/5

WASP: the wasp is SO good. The paint on this one is skewed funny but that’s fine, the green of the abdomen pops really well and I love the grouchy red eyes. 5/5

CATERPILLAR: larvae are so rarely included in these, and when they are, they’re often an incredibly plain segmented tube that doesn’t look like anything in particular, or a recolor of a generic caterpillar I’ve seen several times before. This caterpillar sculpt is actually new to me and nicely shaped, with a tapering body and accurate limbs. It is however a rather stiff hunk of plastic, not as rubbery as the others, and honestly this is the one you would want rubberiest! Still a 5/5 for its inclusion at all.

BEETLE: beetles are the most abundant, diverse insect group and the most common rubber bug toy after spiders, so it’s another bold move that they include only one in this whole set and it isn’t even one of the more recognizable, more famous beetles. On its own merits as just a rubber beetle it’s a 3/5, but its metallic blue stands out so nicely in this set, and the sculpt appears to be some sort of blister beetle, a rare choice and a very cool (but dangerous! Don’t touch them!!!) insect group so 5/5

MOSQUITO: mosquitoes are another of my favorite animal groups, and as one of the world’s most abundant, most recognized, most controversial insects you’d think they’d be a standard bug toy already, but this is only the third plastic mosquito design I’ve ever seen in my entire long life! It’s brown, unpainted, dinky and bent funny. 10/5

Poor Tarantulas, unable to find love because he keeps latching onto the worst men ever. But no matter, I do love him and to prove that I performed the greatest feat of love that there is: I ate him.

By which I mean I ate a tarantula and prtended it was him. I am aware I am not someone whose love Tarantulas would want. That would be good taste and OoC for him, but whatever.

Unlike other insects like grasshoppers, tarantulas aren't as easy to come by so I went to the San Juan market with my brother and his girlfriend. I didn't tell them why it was so important that I ate a tarantula and they didn't ask, just seemed to accept my out of nowhere ideation. But sister in law was happy to go because she wanted to eat snake.

The waitress was really nice and let us see the stand's pet tarantula, Patroclo. He refused to step on my hand despite hopping onto everyone else's because my vibes suck and he hates me personally T-T But that's okay! Being rejected made me feel all the closer to Tarantulas.

They brought me the tarantula I was going to eat before they cooked it, it was really cute!! I took a moment to stare and picture Tarantulas.

As for the taste itself, toasted insects have pretty safe textures for me because they're dry and crunchy, the opposite of the kind of texture that can set me off. The body didn't feel all that different from a grasshopper, I was expecting it would be harder to bite but no, it gave in easily. The legs were amazing!! The thing was really well seasoned and I ate it with habanero sauce and lime.

This was 600 pesos which is outrageously expensive for a single dish that's not even enough to fill you. I ate two tuna tacos so I wouldn't stay hungry. I am ashamed of myself.

But I did it for you, Tarantulas. I think you're worth everything. You are enough.

Also I just genuinely wanted to eat one. Also had a lot of fun at the market so it was okay.

Some other stuff: we had an insect plate with more normal stuff like grasshoppers, crickets, chicatana ants, maguey worms and a scorpion and honestly the tarantula was better. But also, these weren't the best seasoned grasshoppers I've eaten.

But honestly, the best tasting thing was the pulpo al ajillo my SIL got, which is the best pulpo al ajillo I've tasted. Also, she says snake meat has a lot of cartilage, if you're curious.

That summer thing where it rains gently but the sun is still shining and the color green gets super saturated.

The kind of still, perfect temperature where you almost can't even feel the air, and it's dark but the sky is clear and you can see the stars.

When it's going to rain, hard, but not yet, and there's the sneaking undercurrent of a breeze, too low to be wind, and it's the kind of uncanny dim where you have no frame of reference for the time of day, and everything in the world seems to be holding its breath.

Treats that make you happy?

Cheesecake is the first thing that comes to mind. I eat it very rarely, but it's delicious. The consistency is very rich and satisfying.

My mom used to do homemade cheesecake sometimes, and I have a serious nostalgia for grasshopper (mint/chocolate) in particular.

My husband and I pilgrimmage to the Cheesecake Factory around Valentine's Day most years. (I think my favorite there is the mango lime flavor.)

Oh gods. Tiramisu. I go crazy for tiramisu.

What's your favorite hands-on activity (or what would you like to try)?

A fascinating new one: I just learned how to tack up and ride a horse for the first time! I did it for research/writing, but now I really want to ride a horse again. It was very cool. I got the info I needed for my fic, but I don't think I've yet figured out the vocabulary to really fully describe the experience. Very stimmy, though; soothing and exciting. That good riding posture, man. I get it now. I get why people love horses.

Appearance: Grasshopper is a Mammon-customized Robo Fizz, and it shows in both their and Shots' design. Where typical versions of the robotic jester line have stripes, their hat is split into jagged sections mimicking Mammon's color scheme with one tail being a minty sort of green and the other being lime green. The tails of their jester hat end in bells decorated with dollar signs. They also lack the usual ruffles, instead wearing only the black collar with small bells attached to it. Their outfit is also less flamboyant, resembling a lime green dress or robe with one sleeve being black and the other sleeve having black and lime stripes. Their eyes are pale blue.

Personality: Between the two siblings, Grasshopper was always the one who was a little better at pretending to be nothing more than a robotic doll: nodding along to everything Mammon said, smiling through any abuse they suffered, and of course hanging off of the sin when it was required of them. After Shots went missing, Grasshopper agonized over their twin's disappearance for ages before finally summoning up the willpower to go looking for him. Grasshopper is very passive normally, so it takes a lot of convincing to get them to do something. Grasshopper is more talkative than Shots, though admittedly that's probably not saying much since their sibling doesn't like talking very much to begin with. Like Shots, they are not very fond of being the center of attention but can handle it a bit better since they're more of an ambivert than an introvert. Conversely, they are not good at dancing and often wind up tripping over their own feet. They do enjoy painting, however, having picked it up as a way to express themself after leaving Mammon.

I’ve been trying to recreate the mezcalita with hibiscus and grasshopper salt we enjoyed multiple times at Terraza Cha Cha Chá in Mexico City since we got back, but the color never looked right. I had used up my supply of inexpensive dried hibiscus flowers, so I used my fancier bag of hibiscus flowers from Diaspora Co to make these later versions, and I realized that I needed to make a double-concentrated batch to get the color I wanted.

First I tried the mezcalita with orange and lime, but it didn’t taste right; I then omitted the orange juice and kept to lime, and it was better, but it was that double-strength brewed hibiscus that made the drink that finally tasted correct.

One thing I actually stole from Natasha technically #IMSORRYWOMEN (she says "mein" for no reason) is just, random German words he hears in the news.

(These mean tissues, legislation and maternity leave respectively for any who can't be bothered to google something rq). This comes from listening to the SBS radio which I guess has a German program before the Hungarian Romanian Transylvanish broadcast. I know SBS is Australian but I assume the USA has something like it

And you're defs right about the green thing. He lists a lot of green stuff. He says little cabbage which he learned is a French thing and thinks he's so clever for saying it. Animals like grasshopper and praying mantis. Etc. Other less romantic green foods like limes and avocados. At some point he forgets they should at least be green and starts calling him Blue Cheese

He ends up getting abstract with it when he runs out of ideas. My darling D minor scale

Blue - Standard blue design, i always have seen him with yellow eyes because of the pre-final cover of book 11.

Burnet - Silkwings based off of moths are fuzzy for future reference. Also she’s purple.

Silverspot - Based her off of the silverspot butterfly

Admiral - Peacock vibes. also all the flamesilks have flamesilk cuffs and nose rings.

Wasp - the green blood is from the fact the othermind has infected her for like, a century.

Io - i SWEAR there was a constellation based off of the myth of io and the bull but i couldnt find it??? anyways she has bull horns and teal star freckles

Aphid - i think i overuse green hivewing designs but also a lot of bugs are green.

Chafer - he runs the sugar dream, so pink cloud silks

Pierid - sleepy time

Bombadier - hate him 

Danaid - i WISH they brough her back in tfoh shes older than the tree wars she couldve been so interesting. heart wings.

Jewel - jade accessories and teal accents. honey-drop pattern black scales. emo eye scales. just pretty hivewing

Pinacate - She owns a store called raindrops, so blue and raindrop accessories.

Temora - Temora butterflies are really cool

Argus - OKAY this one has a bit of a ridiculous explination. one of my favorite video games ever is called witchs heart and one of the main characters is this guy named noel. okay spoilers for the second game in the rest of this explnation but when he was like 11 he got died by an eye demon and was inflicted with the “curse of argus”. at nighttime he becomes a huge flesh eye teeth monster but can seem human at daytime. his wings are based off his flesh monster form and the rest of his body is based off of his human form. so yeah i slipped a reference of my favorite game into my design blog whoops

Sundew - some red accents + red eye to reference a real sundew plant. also some leafwings have a red spiral tatto on their arm that deigns them as poisonwings. small ones like what sundew has are for dragonets, an extra loop means theyre an adult and a third means theyre first and second in commant

Willow - droopy. some other leafwings have a dark green stick-like tatto that deigns them as sapwings. all these tattoos r the same no matter rank.

Belladonna - purble!!!!

Cobra Lily - i had to give her like the wavy hair frills. pink

Hemlock - the idea of a shell necklace on a leafwing seems so fun. where did you find that shell little man

Nettle - purple but in a grey way

Mandrake - i have a semi crack au where blue and cricket divorce because blue falls in love with mandrake. not important to his design i just want yall to know this

Bryony - the star patterns.... muah. also have an actual oc named bryony but i did my best to ignore him when designing this bryony.

Wolfsbane - ultraviolet

Inchworm - i like his tail

Glowworm - her tail GLOWS

Byblis - ooohhhhh they fuckin PIMK

Pokeweed - hints of violent magenta in an otherwise cool green

Hazel - I give leafwing queens a thorn crown. i thought it was a cool idea but then i found out that it can also be considered a jesus thing. ive never read jesus though so like. coninkydink.

Sequoia - leafwings have green blood cause of that CLOROPHYL BABY!!!!!!! ive visited both a sequoia and redwood national park and those trees are massive. so she is massive too. she has a peg leg cause. war veteran. is blind in one eye. also do we ever learn what happened to her. does she. become queen again after tfoh?? or does she let hazel keep it??

Grayling - hes described to have scales the color of “a pile of chinchillas”

Hawthorn - EVIL time..... 2009 sparkledog oc energy was what i tried to channel

Cochiniel - Did wasp mcmurder her or did she retire. do you think shes still alive that would be so funny. shed surely have to be like 300.

Odollam - i hc theyr related to bryony

Bloodworm - red like blood

Snowfall - SNOWFALL MY BEST FRIEND SNOWFALL. i love her. orange and blue is sooo good. she has heterochromia but she is NOT hetero.

Lappet - dont have many greybrown silkwings despite so many moths irl being greybrown

Ivory - man im sooo glad snowfall has one good adult role model even if its just one of her generals who doesnt hate her

Lynx - LYNX MY BESTIE LYNX. love her. lynx spots. also ik the fandom likes making her cool fun bestie but shes LITERALLY the highest ranked second only to the queen so shes prolly like. real scary.

Mink - babychild....... ough i love she. i like to think that she doesnt get all sad and repressed like other icewing royals

Atala - rose imagery idk

Permafrost - we know hes snowfalls uncle but not on what side so i just made him glaciers other brother. he has similar coloring to snowfall but a similar body shape to glacier. cool.

Ghariel - gave him funky eyes

Crystal - her horns were so fun to draw

Polar bear - baby man little babyman

Opal - i went all out with her design. star spike tail was a must have. her spikes are opalescent

Dragonfly - teal hivewings are underutilized

Rootworm - i think hivweings would wear skirts even if theyre unweildy theyre extra like that

Jerboa I - standard jerboa design. her eyes are more red and horns longer than jerboa iii

Jerboa II - “she went wrong” can mean anything from she cries sometimes to eldrich abomination. i went with the latter. the dark feathers are cause jerboa said she would enchant an ostrich egg. Also i did photoshop real ostrich eyes onto her face youre welcome

Jerboa III - I think her necklace catches all of her scars, even small ones

Luna - I took “wings like cascading sunlight” very differently than her canon design. also purple cause shes based after a LUNA MOTH.

Dusky - puble

Glider - god his design was so fun to read. what do you MEAN LIME GREEN AND ROSE.

Swordtail - “took a cauldron of melted sunlight and flung it on him”

Sage - so TECHNICALLY sage could be a human but on page 112 of the brightest night graphic novel there is a letter adressed to sage in the sandwing library thus i decide they are a sandwing. hashtag nonbinary

Bullfrog - he was so funny i loved him

Pineapple - a littol bit fruity (literal) (figurative)

Carabid - stinky

Sky - basically my peril design but crank the saturation wayyyyy down. he has a rainwing frill like his sister cause i like to think some of chameleon bled through.

Mantis - the mantis hive was said to be scientififc so book

Malachite - cricket but orange

Hornet - I hc her and wasp as twins so their designs are. similar but not the SAME. hornet is more greenish

Clorinde - fun art teacher. also clorinde butterflies are like blank canvases with some paint on them...

Tsetse - i tried to give all the wasp famliy dark stripes

Earwig - red hivewings ended up being really common 

Yellowjacket - zesty and fun. her eye is. i just went bonkers with it

Whitespeck - there were two whitespecks. this one is based off the whitespeck butterfly

Vinegaroon - Vinegaroons can shoot acid so i gave her rainwing-esque fangs. not as bad as rain venom but it would still hurt

Monarch - a dying star. i made her a flamesilk because she desrves it. basically i think royal silkwings were decked out- huge frilly antennae and MASSIVE wings and silk glands on all ankles instead of just the front ones but then wasp killed her whole family so now those genes are rare to nonexistant

Freedom - a lot of designs i see just make her. orange leafwing. i didnt want that so i really muddled her up. shes an ancestor to all tribes! you shouldnt be able to tell whats going on there!!!!!!

Weird ask, but if you could describe all the different Zelink pairings (OOT/MM, TP, WW, ect.) as different icecream flavours, what do you think they would they be?

TWW: Black Cherry

TP: Basil Lime Sorbet

SS: Vanilla soft serve

BotW/TotK: Grasshopper (mint cookies and cream)
