My favorite fictional worlds: avonlea edition
“Spring had come once more to Green Gables—the beautiful capricious, reluctant Canadian spring, lingering along through April and May in a succession of sweet, fresh, chilly days, with pink sunsets and miracles of resurrection and growth.” Green Gables, Anne’s home in Avonlea.
Even now, I can see myself there. The tall grasses and clear blue water. I breathe in and out, taking in the fresh air…

ANNE: [reciting lines 37-41, 132, 134, 141, 143-4 from Lord Alfred Tennyson's The Lady of Shalott]
There she weaves by night and day
A magic web with colours gay.
She has heard a whisper say
A curse is on her if she stay
To look down [on] Camelot.
And at the closing of the day
The broad st[r]eam bore her far away,
And as the boat-head wound along
They heard her singing her last song,
The Lady of Shalott.

"To the memory of 'Lucky’, the charming and affectionate comrade of fourteen years."
— the Jane of Lantern Hill dedication, Lucy Maud Montgomery
Dear Jane of Lantern Hill book club,
I’m in no way prematurely reading ahead of schedule but today as I was locating my physical copy of Lantern Hill, I thought I might take a peek at any forewords, and instead found this very sweet little dedication to one of Maud’s ‘favourite’ cats, called Lucky! Anyone who had looked through Maud’s scrapbooks (also see: above photo) will also remember ‘Lucky’ by his formal name ‘Good Luck.’ And anyway, I thought okay… surely we can talk about Lucky, before we leap tomorrow!
Off to a great start if we have a little pal like Lucky to see us off!
Here’s a little more Good Luck content (plus one extra bonus cat that seemed relevant!), and see all the Lantern Hill book clubbers tomorrow! xx
From the Life and Work of L.M. Montgomery:
1937; Montgomery’s beloved cat, Lucky, dies, and she writes a lengthy journal entry about him and dedicates Jane of Lantern Hill (complete the same year, 1937) to him. Montgomery was passionately fond of cats all her life.
TOP: One of Maud’s (numerous!!!) snapshots of Lucky.
BOTTOM: Her last scrapbook entry is also from 1937. It is a clipping of a Glaswegian, whisky-drinking film-star cat "Matthew of Greengables," that Montgomery had seen in a silent film. The caption says, "The cats had their day in Glasgow yesterday when a Cat Show was held in the City Hall. Here is Mrs. Sargent Stowe with 'Mathew of Greengables.' This pretty puss is a film star, having appeared in 'Abdul Hamid.'"
ABOVE: The Lucy Maud Montgomery Heritage Society shared this granite rock painting of “Napping Lucky,” by artist Rosemary Scully, which can be found at the Children’s Garden of the Senses, in Norval, Ontario.
“The Children's Garden of the Senses is a Sensory Garden. The Garden is dedicated to the famous Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery and it pays tribute to her writings especially about gardens and landscapes which she describes in a very sensory way.”
Guys. Guys. I am ‘wild with delight’ over this. 🥺🫶🏻 The painting. The garden. I’m going to be warm-in-the-heart over it all evening.
Thanks for everything Good Luck! 🐈⬛ What a little soul you must’ve been!

Your art of Cheslock strikes a feeling in me of me wanted to smuggle snuggle him and also mess up his hair or watch The Noteook
You make me watch The Notebook a LOT
Oh my god this is so kind! Tysm!
I'm a very big fan of cheesy, romantic (and often historical) media. I think Anne of Greengables, the Enola Holmes movies and the Webcomics "Mrs. Abbott and the doctor" and "Lady Liar" have to be one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to drawing interactions with characters. I'm so glad that this comforting vibe is visible in my art.

🥾 Great Gable Walk: Updated and Republished on the Website
🏞 Last year, my friends and I decided to tackle a Great Gable walk, starting from Honister Slate Mine, on the B5289 Honister Pass road between Rosthwaite and Buttermere in the Lake District. We had four Wainwrights in our sights: Grey Knotts, Brandreth, Green Gable, and Great Gable – not that we're hardcore Wainwright Baggers or anything!
🚗 After parking, we hopped out of our cars and were immediately greeted by the daunting sight of the steep path leading up to Grey Knotts. A quick look around confirmed I wasn't the only one thinking, "What have we gotten ourselves into?" accompanied by a few mumbled expletives from the group. But, ever determined (or maybe just too stubborn to back down), we started the climb.
🌄 Slow and steady, we made our way up, reaching the summit of Grey Knotts and ticking off our first Wainwright. Next, we headed south-west towards Brandreth, our boots squelching through the boggy bits. Pro tip: sticking close to the fence line helps with not getting lost!
🏔 Our journey then took us south across the grassy expanses, down into Gillercomb Head and back up again to Green Gable, the third Wainwright. After a brief dip into Windy Gap, we faced the rocky ascent to Great Gable. Reaching the summit, we took our time exploring, especially around Westmorland Cairn and White Napes, taking in the incredible views down to Wast Water.
⛰ The descent from Great Gable was a bit of a nerve-wracker, carefully picking our way down the north-west slopes, through rocky terrain and slippery sliding scree. We then veered east, passing under the imposing Gable Crag, and headed north, below Greengable Crag, along Moses’ Trod and across the fells.
🌳 Wrapping up, the path eased up, leading us past Fleetwith and down a stone track by Bell Crags, back to where we started at Honister Slate Mine. Though it was challenging, our Great Gable walk was definitely a memorable experience, filled with a mix of laughter, a few grumbles, and of course, the usual sense of achievement.
📸 For more details about the walk and to see some of my photos, have a look at the website.
