Raven Crag - Lake District.

Sometimes, photographers like myself venture out early in the morning to capture a glorious sunrise with wonderful warm colours. At other times, we venture out regardless of the conditions to capture the sheer moody magnificence of the landscape in any weather. Today was definitely one of those latter occasions.

It's the first 'sunrise' I'd done out in the hills for quite some time, as this year I've focused mainly on sunsets. From the outset, I knew there was very little chance of the sun appearing, and I had the waterproofs on before I even set off - which was a good decision as the rain started heavily very early on and didn't let up for the whole outing.

There are a few locations which I personally think look best in these kind of conditions, and Raven Crag is one of them. I always feel like it has a slightly sinister and ominous atmosphere, so this kind of weather sets the scene perfectly for me. I stopped in this position for a good 20-30 minutes as the mist swirled around the summit crags, seen here from one of the forestry tracks on my ascent. The little tuft of grass in the centre of the track provided just the right amount of foreground interest without detracting from the impressive backdrop.

After capturing this picture, I carried on to the summit of Raven Crag and then the nearby Castle Crag.

(2024-04-21 image © lake district national park) This is Keswick in the middle of the Lake District National Parl. There are many many tourists every year, and not too many residents. It is an area that would be helped by full 4G coverage but it is not economic from the phone operators viewpoint. It falls right into the category of areas that need 100% 4G.

Luckily it has been announced that a number of masts have been installed and more on the way to provide the necessary coverage. This is under the government's SRN scheme. This scheme means the masts are shared between the operators, and the costs are shares roughly 50 / government and operators.

Who else is excited for some winter hikes? Amazing winter walk yesterday up the Sticks Pass to Raise and White Side in the Lake District. Interestingly, White Side was actually Molly's very first Wainwright summit 10 years ago last month, and she has since gone on to complete all 214 🐾🐾❄️❄️

The Lake District is famed for its high fells, mighty lakes and its infinite capacity to inspire – countless writers, from Wordsworth to Beatrix Potter, have fallen in love with the place.

Sixteen main bodies of water make up the park’s lakes, while England’s tallest mountain, Scafell Pike, the second peak in the Three Peaks Challenge endurance event, is also located here. The area is renowned for its stunning walking routes, natural history and its quaint lakeside communities such as Keswick and Bowness-on-Windermere.

Where should I stay in the Lake District? Breaks in the Lakes - Lake District Offers

As one of the best national parks in the UK, there’s a wide range of accommodation available in the Lakes.

Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere are good options for a fuss-free staycation, while Buttermere is situated in-between the lake of the same name and Crummock Water. The town of Keswick is closest to Derwent Water.

Glenridding and Watermillock are good shouts for Ullswater, while there are plenty of smaller villages in and around the Lakes, as well as campsites and caravan sites – if that’s your cup of tea 🏕️
