🧛🏽‍♀️🧟‍♀️👹Horror Movies for Beginners🦇💀👻
Disclaimer: This is something I'm doing for fun and because I've had people in the past ask me for suggestions for people who are interested in horror but are too scared to get into it. I'll be adding more to this list as I think of more.
Tips: For one thing, I would suggest checking doesthedogdie.com before watching any horror movie. It's a great source for triggers ahead of time. The people who contribute to it can be very helpful too, as they sometimes provide timestamps as to where in the movie the triggers take place so you can skip over them.
I would also suggest horror comedies, as they provide humor to lessen the blow of the scary stuff.
Spooky Movies for Beginners
Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, Ghostbusters (2016)
Yes, I am including 2016. No, I am not ashamed to like that version. No, I will not be taking criticism. I did not include Afterlife because I have not seen it yet. That aside, I do recommend the Ghostbusters movies listed. The movies contain a balance of horror and comedy and cool science-fiction tech. They're fun, but not too scary for beginners.
Haunted Mansion (2003)
Most of the "scares" in this movie aren't really scary. If you've been to Disneyland and can ride through the attraction with no problems, you can probably get through this movie. It's geared more towards families, so if you have kids, they'll probably enjoy watching it with you. However, there is an anti-Romani slur used repeatedly throughout the movie. Also, proceed with caution if you have a fear of spiders.
Coraline (2009)
This movie is animated but contains a lot of creepy imagery. Some kids might get creeped out by it. If you like "rabbit hole" type movies that involve stumbling upon hidden and treacherous worlds, you'll probably like it. Henry Selick, the dude who made Nightmare Before Christmas, is responsible for this film adaptation.
Wendell and Wild (2022)
Another animated movie from Henry Selick with Jordan Peele. Two mischievous demons cause havoc. Peele and Kegan-Michael Key play the demons. Oh, and it's a middle finger to private prisons and the school-to-prison pipeline, so there's that. If you're too afraid to watch Get Out, Us, or Nope, but want to experience the horror magic Peele, you will probably enjoy this one.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
I'm hesitant to put this one on the list because this one does contain disturbing imagery that can be too much for a beginner. But this is a really solid movie even if the ending has already been spoiled for you. How scary the ghosts are really isn't what this movie is all about--the themes of grief and healing are really what it's about.
Gremlins (1984) and Gremlins II: A New Batch (1990)
When I was a kid, my parents thought they could scare me into behaving by saying the gremlins from these movies were going to get me. But I loved the gremlins because they were fun and I wanted to be their friends lol. If you like practical effects, you'll probably like this movie. I don't think these movies would be scary for most adults, but kids might be a little iffy with the gremlins--but Gizmo is adorable and might be able to balance out the scariness. However, there is some...questionable Asian representation typical of 80's movies. Proceed with caution.
Warm Bodies (2013)
This movie was released when the Twilight craze was at its height and I remember being shit-talk about that, but this movie is worth watching. Yes, it is about a zombie falling in love with a living human, but it really is adorable (in my opinion) and the movie is overall clever and fun. I will say that there are some parts that might be a little too much for beginners. The "bonies" might be a little too scary. However, the "scary" parts are very brief and they are not the center of the story.
To be continued...

I was thinking about some of the gifs that I reblogged and how for a period of my life I saw a lot more movies in the theater than I do now. I thought maybe it was just my imagination so I decided to check myself and randomly chose 1990 as a starting point, then did checked the Wikipedia list for movie releases and then did every ten years to see the results.
1980 - 4
1990 - 45
2000 - 11
2010 - 3
2020 - 0
My memory, of course, could be faulty so I tried to err on the side of caution. It's not like I even saw all of the biggest movies that came out in 1990 or that those movies are better than movies now. Maybe it was because of my age and the group of friends I had at the time. Maybe it was because I lived in a place that had a lot of movie theaters, including an independent 'art' house so I had more options. It could have been the cost of going to the movies was more affordable at the time. (I went pretty much every Friday night to the movies and out to dinner with friends afterwards.)
Weirdly, looking at the list of 1990 movies some of them I never watched again, even though I enjoyed myself at the time. A lot of them I have no idea why I even went to see them in first place, but it was probably because it was what was playing and we wanted to go to the movies so we found something we could all agree on. I do know the only reason I saw Ghost was because my boss made me. We went to the movies together sometimes but he complained that I was a film snob and didn't watch hit movies as a result. Around two minutes into the movie I slipped him a piece of paper naming the murderer and later I almost got attacked by a couple of women for laughing inappropriately. The credits sequence, I believe done by Mike Jittlov, is still my favorite part of the movie even though I've never watch it again.
Below the cut, are the list of movies. Just because.
1980
The Nude Bomb
The Empire Strikes Back
My Bodyguard
Phantasm (!!! way too young to have seen this)

Imagine the Wedding Dress Org taking a liking to you after you try to save your fiancée is... Funny/HOT!!! Hope you'll do a Sequel! You Really should Write Complete SMUTS, with your Talent/Skill, Monster Pervs would LOOOVE them! WDO reminds me of a Message I sent you a while ago about whether or not you Find Greta Gremlin and Audrey II x Male OC HOT??? There was another Character, but I forget, a version of The Devil I think! I've GOT to Find MORE Pervy PW Monsters for you! ;)
Hmm, maybe. For the Dress Org sequel. I’m just really busy. In February, this blog’ll just have four imagines a week, instead of one daily. But Tome of Tantalizing Terror could always use more weird teratophilia.
Sorry. My inbox keeps eating messages. x_x Haven’t seen Gremlins 2 yet. But if I was a gremlin, I could only hope to be designed by someone as horny, I think, as Rick Baker. XD Audrey II does have nice tendrils... I don’t write for the devil. But more PR villains? Bring it. Someone else DM’d me some Power Rangers clips, so I also have an Arachnor imagine queued up.

Christopher Lee: A Sinister Centenary - Number 30
Welcome to Christopher Lee: A Sinister Centenary! Over the course of May, I will be counting down My Top 31 Favorite Performances by possibly my favorite actor, the late, great Sir Christopher Lee, in honor of his 100th Birthday. Although this fine actor left us a few years ago, his legacy endures, and this countdown is a tribute to said legacy!
Today’s Subject, My 30th Favorite Christopher Lee Performance: Dr. Catheter, from Gremlins II: The New Batch.
This performance is an odd sort of duck for Christopher Lee and his fans: the Gremlins films are, of course, considered horror-comedy classics, with the first movie being one of the most psychotic Christmas movies you’ll ever find, and the latter being a semi-satirical homage to many great horror films of the past few decades. But while a lot of people talk about these movies, I almost never hear anyone talk about Lee himself, and his appearance in the second film as the obligatory mad scientist, Dr. Catheter.
I guess that’s not TOO surprising; Catheter isn’t around in the movie for VERY long, and to be honest, he’s probably one of Lee’s most reviled characters. This guy is a classic evil scientist; obsessed with rare diseases, performing illegal and immoral experiments on people and animals alike, and willing to go to any lengths just for the sake of what he perceives as fascinating science. He’s pretty funny at first, with his mixture of sleaze and unhinged sneering…but then our sweet, cute little Gizmo encounters the doctor, and we start to hate the guy. Not only is he thoroughly unamused at Gizmo’s dancing abilities, and totally unmoved when the scared, trapped little Mogwai is crying and whimpering…but the sheer, sadistic RELISH he takes in stating his plans to cut Gizmo open for future experimentation immediately makes us want to see the guy take a fall.
Honestly, Catheter is a lot like the mad scientist version of Cruella De Vil, when you think of it. Not in terms of being flamboyant and loud, but more in terms of the mixture of loathing and fun he provides. Just like Cruella, what Catheter does and wants to do is absolutely horrible, and unforgivable in the eyes of most audiences…but you can tell Lee is having fun with the part, and the humor of the script – as well as just how much of a TOTAL mad scientist he is, so to speak – makes him entertaining to watch, all the same. His ultimate downfall is also much the same: it’s satisfying to see Catheter meet his end after being so cruel to sweet, darling Gizmo, but…well…anytime one sees Christopher Lee go down, there’s always a slight pang.
Ah, well. At least we had Tony Randall’s Brain Gremlin to help dull the pain.
Tomorrow the countdown continues with My Number 29 choice!
