I will say, the one thing that bookshelf tours (at least recently) allllllways disappoint me about is that basically no one has contemporary YA anymore, except maybe a handful of the very boring and over-hyped bestsellers from the 2010s, and then there’s me out here with my 150+.

Which I’ve decided to share since I made the effort of typing it up (per yesterday’s post), so if you’ve always had the burning question “which 21st century YA novels does Televinita, a 30-something, own exactly,” today is your lucky day.

(DISCLAIMER LIST: noted ‘historical’ on a few while seeing if I had enough for their own area (no). These aren’t all necessarily ones I want to keep forever, just the one that are currently here. Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz (2016)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...

When I saw Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I saw unintentional comedic gold. The shoehorned cat and mouse created plot holes, the crappy animation made for many meme-worthy frames, plus it was just so out-of-nowhere the very title made me laugh. What was next Tom and Jerry and Kramer vs. Kramer? Tom and Jerry and Me, Myself & Irene? I couldn't wait to see Tom and Jerry and the Wizard of Oz but it disappointed me. It’s a film made worse by being better, which is also very much the case for this sequel.

Following her return to Kansas after her adventure in the wonderful land of Oz, Dorothy Gale (voiced by Grey Griffin) learns the farm’s livestock is about to be forfeited to Mr. Bibb (Jason Alexander) unless the family repays their debt to him. Worse, the Nome King (also Jason Alexander) has attacked the Emerald City and threatens to sink it so he can reclaim its emeralds. Rejoined by her friends The Scarecrow (Michael Gough), The Cowardly Lion (Todd Stashwick), The Tinman (Rob Paulsen), her faithful dog Toto… and Tom and Jerry, Dorothy must stop this new threat to the kingdom and save the farm too.

Much like its predecessor, it’s hard to pinpoint who this film is for. “Wizard of Oz” fans may get a kick out of seeing some of the books’ less well-known elements, like the Jitterbug (James Monroe Iglehart, whose character was originally meant to appear in the 1939 classic but was ultimately cut) and the Nome King. I'd wager they'd rather watch Return to Oz, or read the books instead. It’d be different if the animation was good but it’s just ok. At its worst, it's bad without ever becoming so bad it’s hilarious. What a shame. The end credits show some pre-production stills and animatics in which the characters ARE consistently on-model and look nice. Clearly, this was a production made as cheaply and quickly as possible.

Assuming Tom and Jerry fans are interested in seeing the characters interact with L. Frank Baum’s creations, they'll find a  few decent gags here. They’re nothing special but these laughs prevent this creation from becoming painful. I guess you can also appreciate that as a sequel, this is “good” in the sense that, unlike so many other Oz sequels, we actually get to see the characters we liked the first time around come back. Well, not ALL of them. Thankfully, the irritating Tuffy (Kath Soucie) is kept to a minimum this time.

The songs are so bland and unmemorable I nearly forgot to mention them. The best bits of music is another rendition of Over the Rainbow which you’d trade in for a recording of Judy Garland’s any day of the week. That's all I've got to say about that.

Overall, Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz is betterrrr (?) than the first but not by much. It still struggles to validate its existence. This is the kind of movie you only end up watching because your grandma bought it for you at the gas station because she thought it was your birthday and forgot that you’re now a grown man. I didn’t hate it but would be hard-pressed to find anyone I'd recommend it to. (On DVD, February 8, 2019)

The next year, he was joined by a partner, Stanley Sampson the two had a very successful partnership for 25 years running the Casco Country Stores and being members of the Cumberland Wholesalers. It was during this period that Phil decided to start his own store, the Gray Thrift Shop. as a pilot and proudly flew B-17s during his tour, including flying with his crew to England and back.Phil returned to the chain store as a store manager and was promoted to the Portland store in 1956. He also leaves behind Faith Rogers, his beloved companion of 15 years, and her extended family.Phil’s career as a retail manger was interrupted by his service in the U.S. He and Ruth Griffin married in April, 1942 and were married for 62 years.Phil leaves behind five children, Philip, Carol (George) Mayle, Robert (Poppy), Judith, Cynthia (Gary) Hawkes four grandchildren, Jennifer Cook, Stephine Sousa, Chris and Philip Cook and four great-grandchildren, Will, Alex, Nichole and Chloe, whom he dearly loved. There, he met “his million dollar baby” at the counter of the 5 and 10 cent store. He stayed in the Boston area managing multiple stores. 19, 1918 to John Aton and Cecile (Clark) Cook.Phil graduated from Calais Academy in 1936, followed by his departure from Calais in 1937 to join a major store in Fall River, Mass. Cook, at the age of 101, passed away peacefully, May 1, 2020, at Birchwood Assisted Living in Portland.

Because the talent collected for Pokemon Masters impresses me, I’m making this masterlist post of voice actors. idk if ur still talking abt 12th nite but i want to curse you w the knowledge that my first & only exposure to it was being in a youth production of it where we were all playing the characters as if they were old sitcom characters. the fool was split into the marx brothers, malvolio was kramer from seinfeld, sir toby & sir andrew were peter griffin & homer simpson, maria was the nanny named fran, etc. (1/2)

(2/2) i never learned the plot or any of the characters' names because the director only ever called us by our sitcom names and directed us to act like the sitcom characters first & the shakespearian characters second. the entire thing was set up as the fever dream of a kid who was supposed to be studying 12th nite for school but fell asleep watching gullivers island. he was this 10 y/o kid who'd be in the bg of scenes riding by on a skateboard or sitting on a bed or smth.
