West Siberian Laika are not bred to pull. Yes, I do pulling sports with my dogs. Yes, they enjoy it. That doesn’t mean this is a pulling breed. If I was able to hunt year-round I probably would not do any pulling sports and might not even pack, we do that as a way to stay in shape when hunting is not possible. I have had a lot of people ask me about getting a WSL specifically for pulling sports. Some of these people want to be competitive, too. They can never give me a straight answer on why a breed developed for pulling is not a better choice. There are a lot of them to choose from. Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Alaskan Husky, Samoyed, Yakutain Laika, etc. Those are just *some* of the spitzy picks, there’s even more variety if you include draft/cart work. And yes, you can find working versions of all those, as well as crosses. If your goal is to get a dog for pulling, especially if you want to be competitive, get a dog that’s bred for that. I have worked with actual sleddogs, the desire to pull is WILDLY different between those dogs and mine.

been rereading Shades of Magic lately, which i first read in 2018 (!!). it's been really nice to revisit characters that made such a lasting impact on my brain, so i've been drawing dogs about it i guess!

it's a myth that mutts are inherently healthier than purebreds. a pug carefully outbred with a jack russel terrier is healthier than an inbred-to-oblivion snoutless purebred. that doesn't mean any backyard designer schnauzerdoodle is inherently healthier than a purebred working line GSP.
also dog breeds aren't the same as horses and donkeys, stop comparing mutts to mules.

dunno if it's just me but i peg price as a chocolate lab/gsp owner he's gotta have a breed of dog that survives the papa pats yknow and gaz gives basset hound/beagle, don't ask me why 😭
(fern’s opinions below x)
you’re right that price’s dog needs to withstand the dad-pats but i personally see him with a hound of some type, a bloodhound or maybe something shepherd-like, like an alsatian (a lab would work also !!). an english bulldog would be a classic pick too lmao
gaz would totally have a collie of some type, or maybe even a doberman or a beauceron
additionally, simon would have an english staffy or rescue mutt (definitely get the vibe of a girl-dog-dad too who spoils her) <3 and johnny isn’t a dog person, so he’ll stick with a ginger cat

Do sledding races have upper or lower limits for the number of dogs in a team?
Yes!
In many shorter sprint distance races for example you'll see different classes that determine both the general distance and number of dogs allowed. These are often 1-2 dog skijor, 2 dog sled, 4 dog sled, 6 dog sled, 8 dog sled, 10 dog sled and open/unlimited class sled (10+ dogs).
Dryland will also have their own specific classes such as women's canicross, men's canicross, 1 dog bikejor, 1 dog scooter, 2 dog bikejor, 2 dog scooter, 4 dog rig, 6 dog rig, etc. Longer distance races have less options for small teams since these expedition style races require a lot more dog power and ability to drop dogs at checkpoints for their health and well being. While their classes are more to do with the specific distance run, Iditarod for example requires a minimum of 12 dogs at the start (you can have a maximum of 16 dogs at the start) and you cannot drop below 5 dogs total. (Now iditarod and other long distances races have a significant barrier to entry such as other qualifying races and a uh...hefty entry fee, but that's another story).
You'll also see races specific to the types of dogs may be entered. All breed for example is any breed of dog and this is where you see the most competition because it's where the Alaskan Huskies, GSPs and Eurohounds compete. Registered breed competitions in North America are often only Siberian Huskies, but competitions in Europe, such as Polardistans, have specific classes for Siberians, Malamutes, Greenland Dogs, and Samoyeds depending on the breed makeup and purpose (freighting breeds have to carry a specific amount of weight per dog that is different than the weights required by lighter breeds). Longer distance races sometimes, but not always, limit the type of dogs allowed to race. Iditarod only allows husky type dogs with the appropriate coat to survive in arctic conditions (teams of standard poodles have finished the Iditarod 4 times prior to this rule change however and spaniel type dogs have run in the Can-Am).

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: what dog breeds would suit them/they'd like/they'd own?
Tumblr media
CHARACTERS MENTIONED: erwin smith, mike zackarias, marlene, ilse langnar, jean kirstein, eld jinn, gunther schultz,
━━━━━━━━━━━━━.⊹˚⁀➷。.━━━━━━━━━━━━
erwin
german shepherd for sure, but that's such a boring answer bc 1) you know it, i know it, everyone knows a german shepherd fits this man and 2) you can say german shepherd for pretty much every character on this list. anyway: he'd vibe with irish wolfhounds (courageous, fearless, loyal, not agile but very smart and good at problem-solving  - it'd be a good fit for erwin). i can aso see him with a scottish terrier or a keeshond. for a more mellow dog, i can honestly see him with a (spanish or russian) greyhound: they are excellent companions, usually calm, love peace and quiet, but can be moderately amusing and entertaining. the greyhound's demeanor would be a very soothing presence for him. the downside would be that the greyhound would probably get anxious when erwin gets anxious lmfao.
mike
bernese mountain dogs and newfoundlands BABY. also a border collie or a labrador retriever and they'd be outdoor activity buddies. also maybe.. an akita because they apparently are reserved with strangers but form strong bonds with their family. would probably also vibe with beagles and basenjis.
ilse
is it a large breed and does it look like it could kill her and is it taller than her when standing on its hind legs? she’ll love it. doberman, german shepards, australian shepherds, bernese mountain dogs, newfoundlands, and irish wolfhounds - calls them all puppies and thinks all of them are adorable and smart and so loyal and great companions. also - labrador/golden retrievers bc they’re honestly underestimated breeds (yes they’re cute asf, but they also need a firm hand and positive reinforcement) and she’d love that. people would think: “it’s a labrador/golden what’s it going to do? bite me?” and quickly realise “oh shit it’s actually very well trained and loyal and could rip me apart" and ilse would just be like "yea : )". briards, samoyeds, and the shetland sheepdog would suit her too because they are agile and devoted asf, just like she is.
marlene
vizslas are attached to the hip of their owners: marlene would love that. her dog would be her baby. they're a package deal. would love dalmatians and all dogs considered "pretty". probably wanted a papillon when she was a kid.
jean
boxers: strong sense of loyalty? check. protectiveness? check. playfulness? check. also leaning towards rottweilers because they are such devoted dogs. would maybe vibe with swedish vallhunds too, and secretly would think dachshunds are funny and cute asf and would want one. would maybe like chinese shar-peis too.
eld
golden retriever: this one in specific. would also vibe with: great danes, huskys, australian shepherds.... doesn't matter if they are a large breed or not, basically any dogs you look at and think "they have good vibes, maybe a bit weird, but good" he'd love them. would want a shiba inu or a GSP - should NEVER own either.
gunther
kuvaszs and the neapolitan mastiff: serious guys, for a serious guy. i can see him with a rhodesian ridgeback or a giant schnauzer too.  would claim not to like GSPs, but would end up loving them. honestly, i think he'd also vibe with small dogs a lot esp corgis and dashounds.

Having had both, I don't think I would consider owning either breed again (for many reasons), but...
German Shorthaired Pointer or Border Collie?
god this ask made me exhausted just reading it.
if i could be specific and say i want a show-line border collie, i'll do that. otherwise... i guess border collie just because i like herding dogs in general and they're less likely to eat my cat. GSPs are really cool-looking dogs but i havent met one that wasn't some flavor of Batshit and while i'm not a huge fan of BCs, they at least seem to have slightly more self-preservation instincts.

Isn't it like, past midnight for you right now? Go to bed!!!
Anyway, German Shorthaired Pointers are really cool dogs! They're a pointing breed (hence "pointers") so as hunting dogs go they're fairly stable. Their job is to seek out prey (quail mostly) and point it out to the hunter. They do not flush the quail like a Beagle or a Coonhound might flush out a rabbit. They just find and alert the hunter to where the quarry is. Super cool work. Lots of fun to watch.
That being said GSPs are pretty stable for being a hunting breed. They're super energetic, friendly, and just happy dogs. But they're a doing breed. If they don't have something to do they either find something to do (chewing walls, furniture, etc) or they become nervous wrecks. I've never met one that didn't end up being found perched on top of the fridge at some point in their lives.
Not intending to call you out or anything but you remind me of that. You're fun, you have the energy of fifty hamsters (seriously how!? I'm so exhausted all of the time) and you are the picture of happiness and joy in the small things of life. But I see the little moments when you don't have something to focus on and your energy shifts. You get ansty and a little nervy. You need somewhere to put your energy. You need to be doing. That's not a bad thing of course. It's just you. It's a by product of all that boundless energy and joy you have bubbling up in you.
So yeah, you remind me of a GSP. They're my second choice for pointing breed. Super cool dogs. My favorite color are the liver roan.
…it was midnight when I got this ask. And I. Stayed up. Two more hours. Before going to bed *lowers head shamefully*
Dude I love it when you talk about something you’re passionate about oh my goodness-
“I've never met one that didn't end up being found perched on top of the fridge at some point in their lives.” Oh dear XD
Though actually, I quite like sitting up on counters! And I also have a loft bed… hehe
I GOT CHARACTER ANALYZED BY DEATHY HECK YES THIS IS AWESOME!!! Whoa this is so cool to read!! Wow!!!
Awwww, the liver roan is so cute!!

German Shorthaired Pointer
The German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) is a medium to large sized breed of pointing dog developed in the 19th century in Germany for hunting. A versatile hunting breed, being an all-purpose gun dog suitable for both land and water, they are streamlined yet powerful with strong legs. While a hunting breed that retains a strong drive to find and chase game, they are extremely energetic and can excel at a wide variety of dog sports. Their demeanor when well-socialized is friendly toward both people and fellow canines, with some tendency to be "velcro dogs".

I have no clue why people are coming at you over your post. It’s obvious they haven’t spent any time around properly cared for working dogs. I worked in small, outdoor specialty dog boarding kennels for 5 years where only the kennels were inside and we got a lot of hunting dogs (WH griffons, GSPs, hunting labs, etc) and they are just on a different level. These dogs would go insane if they were kept indoors with only 1 walk a day or just tennis ball throwing in a field. I’m just mad for you. Huge chance that some of the people who can’t comprehend a happy and healthy outdoor working dog also unknowingly deprive their dogs of basic stimulation and exercise and basic care (nails, grooming, socialization) that their dogs require to have a fulfilling life. Most outdoor well cared for working dog breeds will be WAY happier than an indoor non working g shep or jack russell or god forbid a cattledog or border collie. Sorry you’re being attacked like this. You’re fighting the good fight.
the answer is really REALLY simple. People on this website have really disturbing parasocial relationships with some of the blogs on this website and take every perceived slight (no matter how incorrect they may be about it being a 'slight' or 'drama' or 'vagueblogging' or whatever) to the point i've even blocked unproblematic blogs just bc i don't need their followers getting into my notes.
People be absolutely feral (negative) on this site and i want all my followers to know right now that you better never behave that way lmao).

Do you have any resources (especially books, podcasts, social media groups) for someone wanting to learn more about Dalmatians? I’m wondering if they could be a future breed for me. Do they dog well in multi dog households? Can they be an about-town companion?
Hey! So, for resources, this book is basically the bible. 'Dalmatians in Performance' on Facebook is also a good group to join if you want to see the many events that dalmatians do and people are generally really good about answering questions. On top of that, if you are in the US, contacting your local regional DCA club is a fantastic idea if you want to actually meet some dals. I am a member of the Twin Cities club, for instance, and we get emails from people asking about breeder recommendations or hoping to meet dals and people are generally really good about meeting up to show people the breed so that they can learn more. There is a Pure Dog Talk episode about dals but I have... issues with some of the things said in it, especially the idea that it's somehow okay to ever breed a deaf dal. (it ain't.)
Dals can definitely be in multi dog households. It definitely depends though on the dog about how well they'll do. They aren't hounds but they aren't akitas, yanno? They aren't especially inclined to get along super well with other dogs but they also aren't especially inclined to want to kill them. They're pretty middle of the road on that. My guy does great in the house but my dad's boys have definitely had some SSA clashes.
They can be an about town companion but, here's the thing, they've got the environmental awareness of a doberman or a GSD without the inherent handler focus. So they might not be especially chill about hanging out on a brewery deck like, say, a vizsla or a GSP might be. Dals also tend to have a reactive period during adolescence, which can be a pain. They also tend to be kinda sus about strangers. My guy does great around strangers so long as they are just going about their day but if they look him in the eye or address him? Absolutely NOT, gotta yell at them about it. He's also been VERY useful when I've been in hairy situations, so I don't necessarily mind that protective instinct.
If you want a dog that is a high energy, versatile companion with some sass but want a dog that will easily fit in to any household and will be rock solid with strangers or kids, I'd get a GSP or a vizsla, to be perfectly honest. I want a dog with a protective instinct and managing stranger danger is a totally fair trade off for me in order to get that. I'm totally down with needing to crate him if a handyman comes in the house and with telling people that they can't say hi. I'm fine with being a little more careful about what dogs he meets, even though my guy is pretty damned solid, though he tends to come on a bit strong because he's a dumb intact teenager. If having to manage is a deal breaker, then this probably isn't the right breed. If that's fine, then hell yeah.
