Guanella Pass

I’ve spent the last week ratcheting up the elevation, with multiple rides to 10,000’+. But today was a 3300’ climb to 11,600’. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and was prepared to turn around if it started looking too ugly, but I was pleasantly surprised to still be alive at the top.

RIDE WITH GPS

Guanella is a relatively untraveled pass above Georgetown CO. Untraveled, except when the weather is perfect, Denver itself is smoky, the foliage is at its peak, and 15 miles of I-70 immediately west is slowed to a crawl by construction. Why not just drive up to Guanella Pass for the day? Good thing it isn’t a weekend. The cars weren’t really a problem, just a constant presence!

The climb comes in thirds. The first third and last third are steep (7-8%?), while the middle is a little gentler as the road winds past a couple of lakes. The climb breaks out of the trees near the top but there are plenty of good views from the lower sections, too. The pavement is good and the road is wide enough to let cars pass safely. And of course, there are all those bright yellow trees.

There were plenty of cyclists - and on this route they were all the pedal up-pedal down type. No e-bikes. No shuttle-supported downhill-onlys.

The ride down was a blast. And would have been faster were it not for photo stops and all those cars, going slightly slower than the nominal coasting speed.
