Y/n wakes up to the feeling of shuffling near the foot of the bed. At first all she sees is the top bunk and Powder's colourful charms dangling above her. She slowly lifts herself up on her elbows.

Powder is sitting with her back resting against the wall, hugging her legs close to her chest. She didn't intend to fall asleep on her, she felt a tiny bit guilty.

"Hi'." Y/n yawns and rubs the sleep and grogginess out of her eyes. The room is very quiet, no one else is there except for them.

"Morning." Powder replies. Y/n is sitting up now. She looks around the room and catches sight of the clock; checking the time, it reads 10:20 pm.

Oh dang. She didn't expect to have slept for that long. When did she fall asleep anyway? She guesses the chaos of the past couple of days could be a contributing factor to her unusual exhaustion.

She's a second away from speaking up when the basement door bursts open and in comes Mylo with Claggor trailing behind.

"Powder, what's up with your sister?" He asks loudly, sounding more annoyed than he usually does. His face is screwed up into a scowl as he walks over and plops down onto the couch. Claggor only sighs quietly and sits down beside him, anxiously rubbing the back of his neck.

Y/n frowns at them, her heart still calming down from the sudden spook. She looks back at Powder who stares at the floor and then shrugs.

"How would I know?"

"She tells you everything. She just left us in the dark acting all mysterious!" Mylo flails his arms as his frustration grows. Now Y/n is growing confused. What happened when she was asleep?

Powder closes her eyes and sighs. She opens them and looks up at Y/n. "Can we go upstairs?"

The smaller girl's gaze flickers from one blue eye to the other before nodding her head and getting to her feet. Powder grabs the stuffed bunny she had a while ago and stands up to meet her friend's side.

When the basement door is closed behind her Y/n turns around and looks Powder straight in the eyes. "What happened?"

The blue haired girl furrows her eyebrows. "What are you talking about?"

"Whatever happened while I was asleep or something... Did Vi leave?" Y/n looks down for a moment when her hands start to fidget.

"Oh." Powder's shoulders sag. "Yeah.. I didn't get to talk to her though because the others followed her out."

There's silence where Y/n's face slightly twists into an undecipherable expression. Her stomach is uncomfortably twisting in anxiety; Vi did something bad but she doesn't know what. She links her arm around Powder's and the two walk up the steps leading to the bar.

The bar is completely empty. It's just Vander, whipping down freshly cleaned glasses when the two girls sit down at the counter. Y/n rests her chin on the hard surface, her friend beside her lays her head on her arm while she stares dejectedly at the bunny.

A song is playing quietly on the jukebox, one that she's heard and danced to many times but now pays no mind to. Vander smiles warmly at the two girls and places their cups in front of them filled with their favourite juice and straws.

Powder only lets her hand drop to her lap not bothering to look up. The other girl attempts a small smile, lifting herself up and taking a sip.

Vander frowns slightly, noticing both of their gloomy moods. The two girls don't notice it, but his eyes land on the stuffed bunny and his expression turns serious. He knows Violet like the back of his hand; if this was all she left them after storming out then she no doubt made some sort of plan or is being the hero. Or both.

"I have to step out for a moment. I'll be back." Vander's soft voice catches the attention of the two girls. He smiles and nods stiffly and hastily leaves the room through the front doors.

Y/n who was watching him turns her head back forward and takes another sip through her straw.

"I don't like today." She states, shoulders tense and face frowning. She feels like she's urning into a ball of anxiety. Powder straightens her back and drinks from her own straw, looking over at her shaky friend.

"Me neither." She mumbles, arms folded on the counter. She didn't notice until now, but a song is playing on the jukebox. One that they used to sing and dance to. At first she's hesitant; she isn't sure if Y/n or even herself is up for it, but then she thinks why the heck not.

She hops off the stool and trots over to the jukebox, turning up the music just a little bit higher. Spinning around she sees Y/n look at her with a puzzled expression, and then a look of realization and a smile light up her face. The girl hops off her own stool and rushes over to meet Powder.

Soon enough the room is filled with laughs and giggles. They spin and dance, standing on tables, eyes crinkled from smiling so hard and limbs having a mind of their own as they belt out the lyrics that they're surely messing up. Any worry or concern is flown out of the window, this moment now being a temporary safe haven where they can be regular little kids running around having all of the fun in the world.

The song was half way done when they started so the moment is short lived, but to them it feels like it lasts infinity.

"Well, if the Enforcers hit tonight we'll be ready... I think." Mylo stands confidently with his hands on his hips, looking down at the table of weapons laid out in front of them.

Mylo and Claggor had been discussing the whole topside against under city topic for what felt like hours.

"Dibs on the bat." Claggor quips.

"No no no no, I found it!" Mylo argues.

"But I called it."

"But I found it—"

"Respect the dibs, I called it already!"

Y/n and Powder are doodling on a box. Or in Y/n's words, a dull sad box void of personality. Their hushed giggles and conversations go unnoticed in their enclosed hideout on Powder's bed. Usually they set up blanket forts whenever they hangout at Y/n's place, and it's no different here in Powder's bed with multicolored drapes shoved underneath the top bunk's mattress to shield them away from the rest of the world.

Out of the blue a loud bang disrupts the calm in the room.

The door opens and Vi is running down the stairs, skipping steps as she does. She looks out of breath and in a rush. Powder and Y/n both discard what they're doing and run up to her, almost getting caught in the sheets.

"Where's the—" The redhead starts but she's cut off by her sister barreling into her side. "Vi you're back!" Powder happily greets her sounding relieved.

"Why did you leave? Are you okay?" Y/n is buzzing with excitement, feeling just as relieved as Powder as well as curiosity about where she could've went off to. But before she can give the older girl her own hug she notices how tense and uncomfortable she looks.

Vi's expression breaks and she looks like she's going to cry. She gently pushes Powder off of her and reaches down to the table to grab the gauntlets. Mylo is faster and manages to wrap his hand around her wrist to stop her.

"Hey! Those are Vander's. Slow down. What's going on?" He asks, face now full of concern and confusion. Violet is breathing heavily, trying to contain her composure in front of everyone watching her. Her eyes shut tightly before gulping.

"Benzo's dead."

Her declaration immediately shifts the mood to a very heavy one. The air in the room suddenly feels suffocating, and as though everyone is trapped in honey to the point they can't move.

"Dead?" Claggor is the first to say something, face paling.

"They took Vander." Vi continues, though vaguely.

"Who took Vander?" Mylo asks, trying to pull more information out of her.

"I don't know, but I need to help him."

"We're going with you." Mylo states, not taking no for an answer.

"Whatever killed Benzo... was like nothing I've ever seen. It tore him apart." Violet's voice shakes, choking on her words as the tears threaten to spill from her eyes. The fear in her voice has Y/n on edge, watching the girl's hands ball up into fists while she tries not to break down. She's never seen the girl so disturbed before. She's nearly frozen in spot beside Powder, who looks just as terrified as her.

"You're not doing this alone, Vi." Claggor wraps an arm around her shoulder consolingly, Mylo stepping closer to do the same. "He's our father too."

Y/n is still standing there, shoulders so tense they're nearly up to her ears. She barely catches Powder leaving her side; looking over to watch her pack a couple of bombs into a travel box.

"Do you know where they took him?" One of the boys ask, everyone now seeming to be preparing to fight.

"Ekko followed them.." Vi is shoving things into a bag, "The old Cannery next to the docks. He said..." Violet trails off when she sees the two girls standing side by side, looking up at her. Powder looks expectantly with a small smile on her face, however Y/n seems very reluctant; shaky hands gabbing tightly onto her forearms making her appear cold.

Violet sighs, almost regretting what she's about to say. "You need to sit this one out, guys.."

"What?" Powder is taken aback, her face falls. Y/n's eyebrows raise is surprise, however she should have expected it.

"You're not coming." She repeats, walking over to them.

"I'm not afraid." Powder tries to reason. "It's too dangerous." Violet tells her, but Powder is still adamant, voice rising. "But families stick together, you said it yourself!"

"I know what I said—"

"But I'm sure we can do something!" Y/n timidly speaks up.

"I want to fight, I can help!" Powder nearly shouts.

"You're not ready." Violet's stern voice shuts the younger girls down. Powder's face, previously determined, is now riddled with betrayal. Y/n can only look down hopelessly at the her shoes, wanting to cry.

"You're all I have left.. I can't lose you." Vi whimpers, placing her hands onto the girl's shoulders and grasping them firmly, reluctant to let go. "Here." Vi then pulls out a flare hooked to her pants and places it into Y/n's hands. "If they come for you, take this and run. Where ever you are, light it up, and I'll find you. I promise." Her voice wavers in the middle of her sentence, but she's never sounded more sincere.

She gives the two girls one last squeezing hug before meeting the boys at the door, and leaving them alone in the room by themselves. Only their muffled footsteps can be heard slowly fading away. Until moments later Powder stomps over to her bed and tosses her box onto the mattress harshly.

Y/n looks down at the flare held loosely in her hands. A tear drop falls down onto the metal surface.

Y/n doesn't know what to feel. Her emotions are all over the place. She's been pacing the room for the past five minutes, she hasn't been able to stay still. One one hand she's scared because she has no idea what the other three are getting themselves into and they likely don't either. What if they get seriously hurt or worse? And her and Powder are left here on their own to fend for themselves? What will they do then?

On the other hand she feels angry. Even though her skills don't reach adequate she can't help but feel offended and left out. She just wants to feel useful for once. She's sure her pyrokinesis could've been a good thing to have with them, right?

She whimpers, grabbing fistfuls of her hair and sliding down to the floor in front of the couch hidden away from her friend's sight. Who she should probably be comforting right now. And she did try earlier. But Powder is evidently hard to control when having a break down. It didn't help that Y/n herself was trying not to set the whole room on fire.

Powder's cries and shouts bounce off the walls of the small living room. From her quaint spot tuckered against the wall, her chest heaves as her hands harshly pull on the thin fabric of her shirt hard enough to leave small tears from her nails.

What is she to do? She has no way of defending herself. Yes she has her bombs, but what use are they at this point? Much like Y/n, she feels helpless. But also very, very angry. Conflicted, she doesn't know if it's aimed at her sister or herself.

Y/n's throat is sore and scratchy from trying to catch her breath between sobs. She doesn't want to sit there and wait. She wants to help. There's got to be something they can do! But god her head aches and burns and her stomach is churning so much she thinks she might throw up and—

The table in front of her flickers yellow. Her head shoots up and her eyes widen like saucers.

"No, no, no!" Her arms reach out through the blazing fire, desperately trying to pat down the flames, her glossy tear filled eyes being reflected by the unwelcome light.

Breath. Breath. Breath, Y/n! She repeats to herself over and over in her head. The flames only dissipate to be just a small few, slightly controlled but still charring the table black and emanating a scorching heat.

She heaves, resting back against the front of the couch. A second later something hits the floor with a clank and Powder's hoars yell makes her flinch. She buries her face into her knees.

Her friend's temper is scaring her. She's never seen the poor girl so upset, and she's afraid anything she does or says will make her mad at her.

With tightly shut eyes and her hands covered over her ears, she croaks, "Powder."

The blue haired girl doesn't hear her at first, her wails racking the disturbed air around them. Y/n repeats herself twice, only the third time when she raises her voice to the point she sounds agonizingly desperate does the other girl freeze. Her hunched over frame and messy blue bangs hide her face.

Y/n, looking around the side of the couch from her spot on the floor, slowly gets up and takes tentative steps towards Powder.

She stops in front of her, she can see her shoulders trembling and moving with every sharp breath she takes. She wraps her shaky hand around Powder's arm and gently pulls it away from her face, where the girl had been obscuring her tear stained cheeks with her hands. And when the bluenette looks up at her, she thinks it might be the most pitiful thing she's ever seen. She looks absolutely defeated; eyes bloodshot with tears and her face pulled into a pained expression, snot running down her nose and strands of hair stuck to her forehead.

"There's- There's got to be something we can do... Right?" She whimpers out, hiccupping between words despite trying to sound strong for her friend. Powder's hands clutch the sheets so tightly her knuckles turn white. Her head shakes. "She left. She doesn't want my help. She never did."

Her breathing picks up and her voice wavers, brows frowning deeply. Y/n feels a shock of panic run down her spine. Now desperately looking around to find something, anything, that could help her or give her an idea. Her moment is cut short when Powder groans, making her whip her head around.

She's banging her fists against her head, tear drops falling down onto her legs again. The smaller girl takes a step back, face screwing up in fear. She hardly gets a chance to process how quickly the girl in front of her grabs the box beside her and throws it onto the floor.

The aggression sends Y/n falling to the floor when she tries to move out of the way, watching the box and everything inside clatter to the ground with a bright flash of blue lights. Her heart is beating hard against her chest. Out of the corner of her eye she sees Powder fall to her knees beside her, quietly sobbing in defeat.

Odd tiny orbs of light still float around the two girls, as gentle as feathers blowing around in the wind. Then Y/n remembers; those are the same blue lights from the explosion the other day. The stone she had dropped in that room... Everything was piecing together, thoughts running miles per hour as her wide eyes train on one of the stones slowly rolling towards her.

"Powder..." Y/n whispers hoping she can finally catch her attention. The bluenette wipes her eyes with her hand, head slowly lifting. The smaller girl picks up the stone peering down at it before meeting Powder's blue eyes. She can hear a sharp intake of breath come from her.

"We can help them."

The stars are obscured by dark gray rain clouds that had moved in overhead. Cool air nips at their skin but they ignore it. The only thing on their minds is saving their family.

They've finally made it to the big, what looks to be, abandoned building. Y/n had never seen it before it shut down, and she always wanted to go exploring inside. She never got far enough though; always caught before sneaking her way in through a window. Why there always seemed to be people around, she never knew. But now being in her predicament, she thinks she might now know the answer.

"This way." Powder beckons Y/n over. She had been leading them for most of the way there. Ever since they stepped foot onto the streets Y/n's mind has been on autopilot, traces of fear and hesitation wiped away into numbness. For now at least.

They approach a wall that appears to have had crumbled and chipped away over the decades, some wooden boards being nailed into it to cover gaping holes. And a little ways up there's an open window. It's suitable for climbing, according to Powder who begins doing just that. Y/n tentatively follows closely behind, copying what she does while being mindful not to miss a step.

Dust and tiny pieces of cement chip off and fall beneath their feet, some flakes of paint floating down to tangle into Y/n's damp hair. Their strained breaths and the distant clunk and thud can be heard in the heavy air.

"Ah!-"

A loose board under Powder's hand gave away and fell, narrowly missing Y/n's head. She looks over her shoulder to watch it fall and that's when, with a sinking stomach, she realizes just how high up they've gotten. At least fifteen feet, and they have maybe five more to go. Which thankfully isn't a lot. She gulps and looks back up.

Soon they reach the window that miraculously has a platform right below it. Powder lifts herself up onto the landing with a little struggle and then reaches her hand down so Y/n can use it for assistance. Y/n takes it and feels herself get pulled up.

Her torso lands onto the hard surface and she's forced to let out an 'oof'. Her legs wiggle in midair and she starts panicking, reaching out for her friend and pulling desperately at her clothes; anything to prevent herself from slipping. Powder grips under her armpits and pulls her towards her with all of the strength she can muster.

"Thanks." Y/n breathes out, quickly adjusting herself so she's safely sat against the wall and not too close to the edge. However it is a tight squeeze.

Powder is at the advantage of being closest to the window. She doesn't waste time to peak inside to take a gander. Y/n peaks around the corner as well, the two girls head-butting to try and get a good view. What they're met with is Vi fighting a group of men in the distance, wearing what appears to be massive metal gauntlets.

Worry washes over Y/n like a bucket poured on her head. The redhead seems to be keeping up but she looks visibly bruised fatigued. How long she's been going at it, she doesn't know.

"Uh, okay. We-we need to do something." Y/n's voice is shaky, she almost sounds out of breath. Her hands start running through her hair and playing with her strands so aggressively that she might rip them out. She's not sure when is a good time to bring out the crystals, she's scared of hurting the wrong people. Plus there's no sight of the two boys...

While her eyes are going back and fourth between Powder's box and the fight, she catches sight of a man who looks like he's growing in size. The same man who had stopped her and the others on their way back from Piltover that day.

His veins glow a bright toxic purple and he makes high pitched screeches that sound otherworldly as his bones and limbs crack and pop to the point he looks almost unrecognizable.

The same purple pumping through his veins drip down his chin and he hunches over, vomiting the substance onto the floor. A sick feeling bubbles in Y/n's stomach at the sight, but it only gets worse when the creature advances towards Vi. The redhead slowly lifts her fists, getting back into a fighting stance.

'No, no, no, no.' Y/n chants in her mind when the girl makes a running start. She makes a great leap off of a nearby railing, but before she can make a hit the creature grabs her by the throat with zero trouble and mind boggling speed.

"Vi!" Powder cries, hand clutching the window frame so hard her knuckles turn white. Her and Y/n watch as the girl struggles while propelled in the air, gasping for air as she pathetically scratches at the creature's hand holding her up by the neck as though she's already a corpse.

Powder scrambles to open her box and take out her contraption; a little cymbal-banging monkey with a stone tied between the two instruments. Her chest is heaving and her hands shake so much she keeps fumbling while trying to insert the blue stones into the toy.

Y/n looks down at it. "Powder, that's enough. W-we shouldn't use too much of them." Y/n warns nervously. If just one was able to cause as much damage as it did to that penthouse, then she's sure three would be capable to blow half of this building to smithereens.

However, the bluenette brushes her off, now winding up the toy. "It'll be fine— We need them so that we can stop the bad people." She tells Y/n, both of them jumping at a particularly angry roar from the creature. Vi had crawled into another room and slammed the door on him, and he was now banging on it to try and get in.

"Are you still in?" Powder stares interrogatingly into Y/n's. "'Course." She answers.

"You have to work. For me. Okay?" Powder begs to herself, bringing the monkey up to her forehead in what looks like a prayer before meeting her friend's eyes. Y/n nods in confirmation and Powder reaches in, placing the toy onto the ground. They both watch from either side of the window, watching it begin to walk down the long hall towards the man. The cymbals collide setting off tiny blue sparks and they immediately scramble away covering their ears. They anticipate the explosion when...

Nothing happens... The creature had stopped yelling and banging on the door. All they can hear is its ragged wheezing breath. The two girls meet eye to eye and both look back into the room. With a resounding click the monkey's cymbals clash and they're blinded by blue light.

The bang had been so deafening that Y/n hardly notices that she's now in the air. It feels like the world had turned slow. Her eyes open and she can see the sickeningly magical clouds of smoke above her, and the sparks twinkling like stars in a vast galaxy. They're so close that she can reach out and touch one with her finger.

And then her back hits solid ground.

She's not sure how long she stayed there; laying flat on her back on the soaking concrete. Little droplets had started to fall from the sky and quicky turn into full on pellets.

She tries to sit up and instantly groans from the wave of nausea that washes over her. Her body aches and the back of her head stings, and when she looks down at one of her hands it's scraped and red. She opens her mouth and a small cry escapes.

"Powder?" She whimpers, looking around for her friend. In the midst of the smoke and rain, she sees her trying to get up onto her knees. The girl's head snaps over to Y/n's and she's instantly crawling over to her side.

"Y/n! Are you okay? I-I think we did it!" Y/n only nods. Powder's injuries don't appear to be dire. But the both are of them are full of mud and soot and soaked in water. The two girls stand up on shaky legs and look around them.

"We need to find Vi." Powder urges, antsy to continue. Y/n's eyes that still flit around end up landing on a small lump on the ground; it's the stuffed bunny. She saunters over to it and retrieves it. She holds it out and Powder takes it from her hands.

They wordlessly start walking. They are not entirely sure where they are going. Powder points out a spot up high where smoke and embers waft up into the air from the other side of a wall. There must be another opening over there.

It doesn't take them long, they turn the corner and Y/n's heart leaps; Vi is there standing not far from a large patch of flames.

"Vi, it worked!" Powder exclaims, clutching the stuffed animal tightly in her midst of excitement. Vi slowly turns around. Her face is bloodied and smeared with dirt. She almost appears indifferent, confused. "What?" She mutters, but it goes unnoticed by the two girls.

"Did you see me? My monkey finally worked!" Powder takes a couple more steps closer, Y/n not far behind with a small hope-filled smile of her own.

"You did this?" Vi mutters. Y/n's face falls. Her eyes shift to the flames behind the older girl, and that's when she notices a huge body spread across the ground. Her blood runs cold. It's Vander, but a much larger and more purple version of himself. He appears unconscious or... Y/n didn't want to accept that possibility.

Vi clutches tighter onto her arm and looks down, shoulders slumped. "Why? Why did you do this?"

Y/n's feet are glued to the ground. A mixture of fear, confusion, and regret, maybe other feelings she's never felt before, swarm in her stomach like a never-ending storm. Slowly beginning to cover her in a darkness that feels increasingly impossible to crawl out of. 'This has to be a dream', she thinks to herself.

"I di- I didn't.. I was saving you..." Powder's voice cracks, gaze shifting from Vi, to Vander, to Claggor's blood-splattered goggles lied askew on the ground. "I only wanted to help. I only wanted to help. I only wanted to help! I only wanted to help!..." Powder cries, fat tears now pouring down her face.

"I told you to stay away." Vi's voice raises, shoulders rising and falling with each labored breath. Powder makes plea after plea. Y/n flinches when Violet out of no where swipes at Powder's face causing her to fall harshly to the ground. "I told you to stay away!" She yells.

Y/n's lip trembles. Her hands clutch at the front of her shirt, slowly backing away until her feet hit something behind her. She whips around and sees Vander; he lies motionless and his eyes, now purple, haven't quite closed despite him no longer being alive. She lets out a wail, hands coming up to cover her mouth.

"Why did you leave me?!" Powder screams, clutching her cheek with a bleeding nose. Vi grabs Powder roughly by the jaw and yanks her forward, forcing the girl to look her in the eyes. "Because you're a jinx! Do you hear me? Mylo was right." Vi seethes, her own eyes filled with new tears.

Y/n faces away from Vander, squeezing her eyes shut. She can't bring herself to look at Violet's face, who looks at her trembling frame with an expression of what she thinks looks like resentment. "I... I didn't mean to." She croaks. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Vi-" She cuts herself off with a sharp exhale, feeling embarrassment and remorse for herself.

She had tried so hard, practiced so much with the redhead who she has looked up to since the day she met her, to get to where she is now; finally getting to a comfortable stage where she feels confident enough in herself and her abilities. And it was all thanks to Violet. Violet who pushed her, who comforted her, and who protected her. For all of her life. And now that same girl stands before her with the most disappointment she's ever seen someone regard her with.

She hears Vi lightly scoff and meets her blue eyes. "I should've known better." The girl mumbles, shaking her head and looking back down at the ground.

With her hand clutching her bloody scratched up arm, she starts to limp away. Away from the two girls who had meant no harm, who didn't understand the extent of their actions. Who only wanted to help.

"Vi! Vi, come back! Please come back! Please Violet. I need you, please." Powder yells for her sister, reaching out for her. Knees digging into the hard pavement causing rips to form on her pants and cut into her skin. Her voice rings through the air even when Vi is no longer seen and seemingly gone. Y/n had given up on holding back her cries. A mist had started to descend over the city, however in this moment the world has never felt so small.

Y/n sniffles and wipes her eyes, ridding herself of blurry vision and turns away from the fire. The blazing light's reflections create a paradox while they dance in the puddles and in her tear ridden eyes like spirits of the night.

Violet is gone, it's just her and Powder again. Lately it has always seemed to end up that way. Her mind trails off to why Violet had been here in the first place. Those bad men are no doubt still here...

"Powder," She chokes out. "Powder, lets go." She shakes the blue haired girl's shoulder gently, attempting to break her out of her loop. She peers up at her with tear streaks running down her cheeks, nose red and puffy from constant crying. "Powder?" Y/n grips her arm a little tighter and starts pulling her up to her feet.

"We need to go." Y/n's throat is scratchy and raw, but she seemed to be able to get her point across when she sees Powder nod her head. The smaller girl still hooked around Powder's arm, passes Vander's body. She parts the fire with a wave of her hand and guides them through.

She spares one last glance over her shoulder; as a sort of farewell to the man who she had always looked up to and viewed as family. And then the fire closes.

1. So yeah, I have read so many meta writing concerning August and what motivated him to do what he did (shoutout to Mark Pakin for unknowingly being the root cause of all my angst against August 😅). I'm not convinced because P'Aof has that reputation of subverting the 'obvious' in what motivates his characters' actions - i.e., Mes' uncle's financial woes led him to watch Mes die from a heart attack in He's Coming to Me, Tian's illegal race bet causing Torfun's death in ATOTS, and Ming betraying his bff, Dissaya, by stealing her scholarship grant as the root cause of the family rivalry in BBS.

I really am curious to see what P'Aof has cooked up this time. Plus, it's a beach episode next week 😊

Faster than a speeding train, things that ran through my head while watching this episode:

--This episode was full of fanservice, pure and simple. But meta service? Well, that was a tease.

--Like that close-up on the evening newspaper? There was a big headline that warned people in the mountains to be careful of bear attacks, but the dates were just blurry enough that I couldn't make them out. Dang it, Ufotable!

--But as for that close-up on the missing persons posters at the beginning, if you're looking for names to use for people who already disappeared on the Mugen Ressha, there's a 20-year-old Yamazaki Chiyoko, a 12-year-old girl named Setsuko, somebody with the last name Okuda… not that I believe the mystery woman who got left for dead but left uneaten was among these people, she's only been missing one night and is already expected to make a full recovery with no scars. Including not a single scar on her heart, and she'll have the ongoing protection of the Corp! What a princess! And just… an satisfactory plot device. After all the emphasis on how demons are horrid and leave irreparable damage on those whom they effect, her experience and Rengoku's assurances that she'll be totally fine sort of cheapen this.

--To that effect, Rengoku-san made a better point later in the episode, after Fuku apologizes for assuming demons don't exist. It's better proof of the Corp's hard work if people can go on thinking that, never having been affected in the first place!

--For as morally outstanding as Rengoku is, honesty doesn't appear to be an important virtue. Or at least, dude has no idea how to make a convincing lie. "I'm a bentou seller." Yes. Sure you are, Rengoku-san. I'll bet that after Speedy's attack at the garage, the workers are later going to look to each other once everything calms down, and somebody's going to say, "you know, I don't think that guy was sent here by the railway HQ."

--And Speedy, as a villain, just… ugh. I'm glad Rengoku-san made short work of him and just shut him up.

--I just… I need to sigh again for all the hype I felt for this episode, only to find the writing so… siiiigh….

--Like, I respect that they had constraints in how much they could affect or reframe the plot which comes thereafter, so they chose instead to dig (too deeply) into the lore behind "umai" just as a way of providing fanservice because everyone loves Rengoku-san. And we do!! We love the unnecessary cape flip! We love that he defeats demons with ease! And I certainly love that he has a heartwarming moment hearing that Fuku's mother and grandmother were saved by Shinjuro and that he is emulating his father, and how he wants to tell his father this good news that the people he saved all those years ago are still well, thanks to him. He wants to see if good news like that will do anything to reassure his father of the worthiness of his efforts. I love this quietly sensitive side of Rengoku-san, who is just as prepared to not have such news have any positive effect and will just make his father lash out.

--But……. I don't think they actually did Rengoku-san's character any favors with all this emphasis on how much he loves and respects food. "Don't drop your anpan" is so… not an important thing to focus on in this situation, and taking a bit bite out of food that's not his, well… it's cute and funny, but I feel like it would had been more in keeping with his character for him to catch the anpan and give it back and go on asking questions about his mission. And then showing more disgust for the demon when Speedy steps on the bentou instead of, like, when Speedy's got his nails digging into the boy's flesh, is kinda… kinda not showing Rengoku-san's strength in accessing a situation and zeroing in on what needs to be taken care of. But, sigh, if they had to use the bentou as a plot device, I guess this was a clumsy way to do it.

--Siiiiigh.

--Man, they had me so hyped with all that emphasis on atmospheric settings, the Corp members rushing toward the train (and supposedly about to meet their deaths, as we know there's already been victims before Rengoku arrived), and a Corp member who we'd never see again after this… but again, Ufotable only felt enough flexibility to do fanservice, not stakes.

--And just… the whole…….. running faster than a speeding train……….. okay, I'll let this one slide, Pillars DO run fast, Rengoku-san HAS moved this fast in canon.

--If Enmu brought Speedy there as a decoy, I wonder how he did it? "Hey, I need to attract the Demon Slayers' attention for a few days. Be slow and coy with it, leave them presents on your trail." "Why in the world would I do that??" "If you do a good job, I'll tell your idol Upper Moon 3 how cool you are." "IT'S A DEAL!!!!!"

--Leaving all my disappointments aside, there are things I find endearing in this pure and simple fanservice filler. I find Fuku-chan and her granny sweet, and I like that Granny reacted to the sight of Rengoku right away, and acted believably for someone who has had a run-in with demons in the past. Ufotable is totally committed to this bentou lore being part of the plot too, what with making merch and gallery displays themed around the bentou vendors. It was indeed fun at the last Toei Movie Studio event to go on a make-believe set of this shop, complete with all the signs and items on sale. :D

--And that boy in the blue haori, and the girl who takes the lead once the team of back-up arrives? How can I not like them? (And knowing me, how can I not feel tempted to want to write fanfic about them?)

--Ufotable showing off their soba animation skills is funny, and impressive. I wound up picking up a sweet potato bread for breakfast this morning to be on-theme for a Rengoku episode, but I regretted later that I didn't get anpan and pick up soba for lunch.

--But also… yes, I am a victim of fanservice. Rengoku-san is unnecessarily cool.

I was supposed to watch Only Friends after Pit Babe but then took over a week off of watching new shows because I had to write a Pete/Kenta fic and now instead of Only Friends, I'm watching The Sign.

I know incredibly little about this show except it involves Billy and a guy I don't know, there's monsters? sci-fi/fantasy elements? cops? I watched like a few tiktoks/gifsets from eps 1 and 2 but those didn't give away much. Also, there was angsty stuff going on in this show during that week when Pit Babe ep 10? aired and [redacted] [redacted] and Last Twilight was getting a lot of flack for ep 12 but I can't remember if it was because somebody died or not

Anyway, here we go, hope to love it, as always.

Ep 1 (Feb 20)

Ah, I for a split second wondered if that person was gonna betray them... but was like nah, this is just the beginning and we don't know anything, would they would that rn? maybe that look was meant to signify that he's gonna get himself killed by being stupid? but ig they would make him betray them (though was that a real hostage or also a dummy?)

I wish the first 10 minute fight sequence was shorter because we knew nothing but the last 3-4 minutes was interesting because we see more of the characters at play beyond just fighting

Also, Pit Babe and The Sign started in November while Dead Friend Forever started in December. The people who watch these BLs weekly must've been having a ball with so many shows exploring new genres and high-concepts in BL. Also interestingly, both Pit Babe have Pavel and Billy who each have been in BLs before and lead them as one of the main pairs while their partners Pooh and Babe are new to the industry. Ta and the other guys apply a little less since Ta only had small roles before and Dead Friend Forever seems more ensemble cast but kinda similar ig

Ep 2 (Feb 20)

As expected, I have a hard time stopping watching a show when I start even though I have work to do.

Also, while looking for ep 1 gifs, I came across some stuff about the naga (snake) and eagle but I didn't read much into the post but I guess those creatures will feature prominently throughout the show

and it’s not like the trope of perfectly fine adult relationship that had random childhood backstory for no reason. this one is that the reason they even have this adult friendship and crush is because they met each other that time and were told they’ll meet again since their lives are intertwined ah Phaya dreamt of the naga often as a child

I was kinda avoiding watching the dream sex scene (watched it in mini on the corner of my screen lol) and so I didn't have too many thoughts except once Phaya wrapped his palm around Tharn's neck. But going through people's gifsets, I've seen a few mentions of how we know this is a manifestation of Tharn's desires, whether it be the choking kink lol or liking getting pushed around dommed and that it's fun to actually get to see his fantasy like that. honestly a FAVE aspect when I think about it that way like aw his desire to be manhandled

But stuff that happened in the middle: the killer can't remember what happened in the cellar but he def had magic (blue) and so did Tharn (red) - which he used to defeat the killer, Doctor and Phaya face-off where Phaya had black? coloured magic which burned Doctor - I wonder how much doctor knows? about the myth/past life stuff, the temple man (Luangpur?) told Tharn that Doctor and Phaya shouldn't meet. Then finally, the dream where we get Freen magic lady, kinda confirmation that she's indeed Tharn (this life), and also a visual of that tall eagle man. Also, from gifs, I realized that the amulet or whatever Tharn used to defeat the killer was his own, he tore it from his neck

I kept getting confused how much regular people believed because everybody seemed to believe whatever the monk said but that involved a lot of fantastical aspects + the Naga festival, so I wasn't sure what people in general believed (not just what Phaya and Tharn who are like reincarnations or smth of magical creatures believe lol)

Was too sleepy to write anything for 6-4 but I have half-baked thoughts about the punch ig. On some YT comments and tiktok comments, I saw people annoyed at Tharn for not believing Phaya and people were calling him too stubborn and naive. I do think he should've taken Phaya's warnings/dreams more seriously cuz like girl, you're always seeing visions of him in danger so it can't be that much of a stretch to think he dreams of you in danger c'mon. But I also think Phaya is kinda too vague and doesn't explain properly like he can't just expect to burst in and physically drag Tharn away from Doctor who he has known for years and years and trusts; in contrast, Phaya and Doctor fought and Phaya even physically pushed him or whatever. So I get Tharn being like wtf... and also Phaya being desperate.

I hope they make up next ep (properly. through conversation and honesty and understanding) so that we can get them together again though bc we barely had them together this ep and unfortunately unlike Pit Babe ep 11 where the other characters were able to carry the ep w/o much Babe or Charlie, I don't care as much about the characters here.

Overall:

I think I liked the first few eps and the potential of the series and the possibilities more than I liked the actual series oof. Since everybody freaking loved this, I also had high expectations.

I just went through the gifs I'd reblogged (I reblogged A Lot cuz I thought I'd end up liking the show more than I ended up liking. went and deleted a bunch bc I was like why did I even reblog this one, what's the point) and I really did like more of the show's gifs from the earlier eps (whereas I enjoyed the analysis and stuff more in the later eps). Don't even feel like reblogging any ep 11 or 12 stuff now though, except maybe the checking under bed sequence. It was also just clear from how invested I was in an episode while watching because in the earlier eps, I was paying more attention and watched an ep in one sitting whereas in the latter half, I would pause in the middle of a section to go on my phone or even just stop watching the ep after a section, do stuff and then come back to finish.

I thought there would be more focus on the romance and fantasy and past lives aspect and less on the cop activity. Like there was no need to spend That much time on the rapist killer case nor Art and Kao's case, we could've spent that time on something like following up on what Lieutenant Tam had learned and the drug case/Tharn's father's case more directly along with more of the actual past lives and fantasy and such. In fact, we got so little about their past lives, I thought there were 4 cycles or something?

I don't know man, I feel like they didn't choose the correct things to show on screen? This sucks because they clearly put in So Much Effort and tried so many new things for BL, so I wish I had loved it more and was more attached.

I think most of the fight scenes and stuff were confusing and not choreographed very well and some interactions/moments/explanations needed to like have more time dedicated to them. However, some moments were just shot/directed so beautifully like ep 11 when grandma is going through the flashbacks of seeing Doctor with Tharn as a child and uni student etc from that single room and ep 12-3 when Phaya wakes up to find Tharn gone, looks under the bed, and the whole sequence after that. (Unfortunate that the reunion scene was so meh).

So many parallels and gifsets of parallels, I keep having to remember my parallels tag is for across different shows while compilation in the tag for same show. I enjoy the parallels and the thought put behind them. It also shows like the cyclical nature of Phaya and Tharn's lives, and it would've been even more impactful if we saw more of their past lives (the original one or the 2 that occurred in the middle apparently).

Highly doubt I'm gonna think of the characters again, I somehow stopped being attached to them about halfway through. Really wanted to give it at least a 7 for trying so many things but don't think it earned it sadly. They tried so many things, as shown in the list of tropes below, but I don't think they satisfyingly merged them or chose the correct things to focus on on-screen.

Thoughts and Reaction to Mr. Pigeon 72!

I knew this was going to be a really good episode, just because the synopsis we got and the trailer seemed pretty bland. Whenever ML does that, a lot of big things happen in that episode. I screamed and choked on my water in the opening scene where Ladybug's with Alya in Marinette's room. I've been looking forward to Alya and Marinette scenes sooo much since Gang of Secrets! Wayzz & Alya: Hey Marinette, you should take a break and rest. Marinette: Nah, I'm good I gotta keep working Alya: YOU'RE LOSING IT, GIRL! Marinette: Don't care, must work Alya: Okay... you know Adrien and Kagami broke up, right? Marinette: Wait what?! Oh no, Kagami needs me! Alya: Not the reaction I was expecting but okay "Let's not wait for the storm to pass, but let's dance in the rain." I really like this quote! Even during bad times, you need to find the good and enjoy it. And Marinette reaaaally needs to do that. But in a literal sense, please don't dance outside during a dangerous storm.

ALYA AND TRIXX ALDJFSLJDS oh I love them, I'm so happy we'll get to see more of them. The way they both reacted to Marinette saying she has to go console Kagami, they weren't expecting that. xD But I was! I find it very amusing how in episodes like Frightningale she was more upset with Chloe being Ladybug than Chloe being in a video with Adrien that Alya's shocked by her decision, and in Frozer where Marinette was putting Adrien's wants before hers. I really don't understand why people think just because she likes Adrien, she'd not want to help make those around her happy even if it wasn't what she wanted for herself. I'm not surprised at all that Marinette would do this for Kagami, but I'm very happy that she is. "Alya, in Paris, Kagami has no other friend except me. Only I can console her." This makes me so happy. The only times in this show I like Kagami, is when she's with Marinette. After watching this episode, I'm more and more thankful she finally told Alya about being Ladybug I don't even want to know the state she'd be in had she not. O.O She almost ran out of her room as Ladybug (whoops), then almost ran out in her pjs (again, oops). Thanks to Alya, she didn't do either. xD That little detail where Marinette runs out and the sun's really intense, letting us know she's been inside a really long time, so everything outside is really bright. I really appreciate the little things like that. Or at least, that's what I take it as. Unless they're hinting at summer coming up soon... Dang Marinette, just jumps on Kagami's back LOL Kind of reminds me how Chat Noir likes to come up on Ladybug. xD "Your so original friend." Marinette is pretty original! Wayhem with Cardboard Cut-out Adrien in Mr. Pigeon 72: ADRIENNNNNNN! :/ Marinette has a bag full of everything she may need in all kinds of situations. Comes in handy but good grief girl! How do you lug that all around??? What kind of scenarios do you think up to think of

some of that stuff!? Marinette's so adorable in her bathing suit awwww! Dude. Bob Roth. He said he's allergic to pigeons! And you blame Mr. Ramier because Adrien sneezed and it scared the pigeon away? How is this man successful again? He doesn't listen to anything or anybody. Marinette's like hey Kagami, look at Adrien. You'll start liking him again. Do you feel your heart beating fast now? And she's like "I feel especially bad for the trainer (Mr. Ramier)". I mean same though. He's being treated horribly! x.x Next take, Adrien dives and he sees Marinette with Kagami. But I think he only saw Marinette. Because he says he thought he saw a friend from school (Kagami doesn't attend their school, just the fencing class, as far as we're aware) and also he makes no mention of Kagami at all in this episode. Which means...

Why's your jaw dropping at the sight of your "just a friend" in a bathing suit, Adrien? And, you know, Kagami's literally right there in a bathing suit, too. Just saying. But it's like she's not even there to him. Hmmmmm. Poor Kagami's like, this entire thing is embarrassing, I feel embarrassed for me, Adrien, and this situation. Kagami: Marinette, stop! It's getting crazy! Marinette: Love is crazy! Don't think about it! I love how the more Marinette tries to help Kagami, the more things are working out in Marinette's favor. Interesting, isn't it? The more she tries to tell Adrien her feelings and make opportunities for them, the more they fail. The more she tries to help Kagami, or someone else, the more opportunities for her land in her lap. Hahahahaha the way they both fall LOL "Marinette? 😮" *guilty smile* AND THEN THEY TAKE DOWN POOR EDGAR! :( Mr. Ramier's in the background giving the poor bird CPR as he's drowned and Marinette and Adrien are just casually talking not paying attention lolol "What are you doing here?" "I came to surprise you." Kind of, she was hoping to help Kagami get back with Adrien. So that's a kind of surprise! "Uh, well to relax!" True too, actually. Alya did send her off because she needed to get out of the house and relax from her Ladybug and Guardian duties. Marinette, everyone needs to be careful when at a pool. Clumsy people like you especially need to be careful! lol Good thing Adrien's already seen her fall so many times, it's nothing new lol Gabriel: It's a failure Bob Roth: It's not my fault, it's his! Mr. Ramier: You are under arrest! Edgar is my best friend. He's the most intelligent of the pigeons! Gabriel: It's a pigeon Bob Roth: WHAAAT? IT'S A PIGEON? RAMIER, YOU LIED TO ME. Sorry Gabriel, I'll replace this man! I know a shark trainer First off... LOL that whole scene XDD I actually knew Bob Roth was going to say that entire thing before I heard it lolol Second... awww Edgar's okay! c: and third... I'M SORRY, YOU WANT OUR PRECIOUS BOY TO BE AROUND SHARKS?!?!? Who keeps this man employed?!?! Idk why but this whole time I thought that everyone would turn into giant talking pigeons lol ah well "I realized my mistake! We'll recreate the moment where you fell in love!" ohhh? Like I mentioned earlier, whenever she tries to do something to help Kagami (or someone else) that's when her intentions work out best for her. 😉 One of my favorite things from Style Queen was Plagg and Ladybug working together. Now they're working together again and just... ahhhh I gushed so much at that scene! x3 YESSSSSSS what I've been waiting for! Ladybug can just call Alya now and be like hey, I need your help! And Alya can just be like okay cool, and either goes to her room to get the Miraculous herself, or finds her and gets the Miraculous. So cool! Of course, I'll be most excited if she ever gets to just keep it on her, but... baby steps. Rena did a phenomenal job speaking as both Ladybug and Chat Noir lol. She's such a fan of them both, she knows just how they are around each other. Oh, oh no. We're trapped against a wall by a few pigeons. Looks like our only option is to give up and remove our Miraculous and reveal our identities. Are you seriously buying that, Gabriel? Plagg's like HELLO I'll be taking this! Alya did everything from inside Marinette's room. Ladybug was trapped in that room at the pool the entire time. All it took for this akuma to be defeated was Illusion that can be done from anywhere and Plagg getting the object off Mr. Pigeon. That's amazing! Also, this is the first time Ladybug didn't have to actually see things around her to know what to do. She just focused and thought about it. o.o Okay so hold up. Thanks to Alya, Marinette now knows she can create charms to protect past akuma victims and keep them from getting reakumatized, which is wonderful. I love how much of an impact Alya knowing is having! BUT How exactly does Monsier Rat come about then if he has a charm to protect him??? 🤔🤔🤔 I really like how her drive to want to figure things out was

especially because Mr. Ramier's been akumatized so many times, and she wanted to help him from having to continue to go through that. "This girl is truly Miraculous" awww cute how he got to just watch that this time.

I screamed at this moment because I knew. Since Origins, we have not seen this exact sky. Even during rainy scenes like in Chat Blanc or New York, they didn't look like this. YES, Kagami knows that the way Marinette feels about Adrien shows how much she loves him, but she knows she doesn't feel that way about Adrien too. And "You're right, Adrien is perfect... perfect for you." With a smile and everything! Awwwwww! This acceptance, and the Marinette and Kagami friendship in this episode is really, really good! 😭 "Wow, have you kept it [the umbrella] all this time?" She sure wasn't expecting that!! But wow Adrien, you noticed? Then Coup de Foudre happens again. Yeah, this girl is never getting out of her feelings for him.

Of course she's having trouble with her words still, but that's okay. But she's like oh, I'll give it back, and he just pushes it to her and says she'll need it to get home... unless she'd like a ride with him. AND SHE ACTUALLY ACCEPTED AND WRAPPED HER ARM AROUND HIS OMG.

To then only have the umbrella close on BOTH of them!

AND THEN ASKS IF HE WANTS TO WALK INSTEAD BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE UMBRELLA! She's come so far! And the sheer disappointment when he remembers he can't because of his Chinese lesson :/ And then, because he can't not be looking at Marinette, he hits the back of his head on the car, making himself look silly, just like in Origins she made herself look silly. This time she laughs, and he laughs with her. And it's literally Umbrella Scene 2.0 and it's absolutely everything.

DORKS ❤️❤️❤️ "They are made for each other." awwwww instead of Master Fu, this time it's Kagami. And she sounds very okay with that, that's so nice. "Let's not wait for the storm to pass, but let's dance in the rain." Then proceeds to dance in the rain!

Ahhh what a refreshing, good episode after how much she's been struggling and crying! So lovely! Her friendships with Alya and Kagami were really strong in this episode, her doing her best to help her friend with the guy she herself has always liked, and then Kagami was the one that wasn't really into it, and it made both girls realize that Marinette loves Adrien and is the one best for him, not Kagami. And I'm pretty sure this episode helped Adrien to open his eyes to Marinette more too. At least, this is the beginning of that, anyway! Alya's such a tremendous help to Ladybug now, which is everything. I do wonder if more friends will very slowly start to find out her identity and they end up contributing more to bringing down Hawk Moth, so she really, really isn't alone like she once thought. I don't really have any complaints about this episode at all! Just a bit sad we had no actual Chat Noir, but we got Ladybug and Plagg from it, so it's fine with me! x3 I know some may see it as "Chat Noir isn't necessary, how dare they do this to him!" but no, he's very necessary, sometimes he just can't be there and she can't do it alone. You have to remember how much Chat Noir means to Ladybug, and that she wouldn't even BE Ladybug if it weren't for Chat Noir! I'm really curious now about what episode 5 is, since now we've gotten Episodes 1-4, 6, we're getting 7,8, and 13 later, and we've already gotten 11. Filling in the gaps for the first half of the season! This entire week is going to be crazy with the new episodes, and for each one I'll be writing one of these posts for, so be on the look out for them!

Going in blind: Watching season 1 for the first time. Random thoughts.

This show is kind of nice because I have no memories of the original She-Ra show, or even any of He-Man, honestly. I'm not sure if I ever watched the original, so I have no frame of reference for how the series is "supposed" to be. I can just take it and judge it as is.

Of the bat, all I know is that supposedly She-Ra and Catra get together as a romantic couple later, but I'm also a huge My Hero Academia fan and the fandom around me ships every character with every other character, so for all I know that might just be shipper wishful thinking I've been seeing and hearing. Given fandoms for Gravity Falls, Thor, and Supernatural ship even siblings together, I've learned not to trust anything except for what I see in the series for myself.

By the way, this isn't a review, just random thoughts and comments I'm having as I'm going through season 1 for the first time.

Episodes 1 and 2: Right off, I really like Catra's "No duh" response to Adora about the truth of the horde. She knows they've been lying to them and have been doing terrible things, she just doesn't care. If she and Adora play their cards right they could end up being the ones in charge and then they'd have all that power. Not necessarily to make things better but enough to where they could do whatever and live however they want. That's a good build for an antagonist. Not ignorant to the fact what they're doing is wrong, just simply so selfish that they don't care.

Episode 3: It really feels like there was no good reason why Glimmer didn't just outright introduce Adora to her mother and every reason she should have known it was a bad idea to try and hide her for a surprise. Being a former horde soldier she'd probably get treated with hostility if Glimmer brought her to the front gate but you'd almost guarantee Adora would get arrested or outright killed if she got caught while no one else knew she was there.

On the other side, we have Hordak being pretty intelligent in promoting Catra. He probably knows Shadow Weaver already doesn't like him, so it's not like he's losing anything making her upset with him, and it's clear she favors Adora way more than Catra, so that little bit of advancement towards Catra probably goes a long way in earning her loyalty to him and a person on the inside with Shadow Weaver.

Also, I'm not the only one who saw Madam Razz and immediately thought Adora had found her Yoda, right?

Episode 4: I don't know how it was in the original She-Ra and He-Man series but I kind of like She-Ra being this title from legend. Adora is not the first She-Ra, given what Razz was talking about with a Mara, so instead of being something new, impressing everyone with abilities they've never seen before, and creating the legend, Adora is placed in a position WAY over her head where she's having to live up to what came before her.

Episode 5: Calling it now, as long as her personality is genuine I think Scorpia is going to be one of my favorite characters in this show. She's...endearing, I think is the best word. She's like a mix of Kronk and a nicer Shego.

For a little bit I thought Mermista was voiced by the same actress who played Poison Ivy in the Harley Quinn animated series. She's not but they do have the same kind of Daria-ish inflections, thus by confusion. Given the prom episode, Sea Hawk feels kind of like her Kite Man.

Episode 6: Okay, now it's between Scorpia and Entrapta who are likely to be my favorites by the end of this. She's fun and quirky.

Episode 7: Quite the lore drop. Shadow Weaver was once a Mystacor sorceress known as Light Spinner. I like to imagine we'll get more on that later. Her haunting Adora reminded me of the Teen Titans' episode where Robin was similarly haunted by Slade. This didn't go as far as that but that's probably for the best, since TT had two and a half seasons to build that dynamic up with Robin and Slade while we're only now halfway through the first season.

Episode 8: Well dang. Again, I don't know for sure if Adora and Catra do end up together but boy do I buy why they're shipped together after that dance. Also, good on Bow for standing up for himself. It's clear that he'll always be Glimmer's friend and this won't change that but that doesn't mean he has to just accommodate her. I understand where her issues stem from but I am still glad he gave her a reality check. It helps him feel a little more like his own character.

Also, another nice little bit of lore and worldbuilding. Scorpia's a princess, the horde landed where her people lived, and they seemed to join them willingly.

Episode 9: Surprisingly don't have a lot to say about this other than I don't buy for a second that Entrapta is dead (EDIT: She's not). This was mostly action.

Episode 10: Not going to lie, this one kind of annoyed me a little, at least the first half. The conversation between Glimmer and her mother saved it a bit. It was a bit of a trifecta. You have the alliance breaking apart, saying that the loss of Entrapta only happened because they were all together...even though Entrapta only "died" because of her own machine obsession that caused her to deliberately walk back into the purging chamber. You have Entrapta who might be turning to the horde's side because she feels abandoned by the other princesses...even though they thought she was dead, and again it was her fault they got separated. And you have Glimmer refusing to tell her mother that Shadow Weaver's dark magic has caused her powers to go on the fritz and is causing her great pain. It just feels like none of this would be an issue if most of these people would stop being self-absorbed for three seconds and talk like any normal person would. It feels very CW drama, like something I'd see in a bad season of Arrow or The Flash. The only person whose issues I buy is Adora, who is basically a soldier who was never properly raised to deal with emotion or loss and is already struggling with the burden of being She-Ra, the legendary savior. I get why she's beating down on herself for not being able to do more even if nothing that happened was her fault.

Episode 11: JEEEEEEEEEZZZZ, that was such a good episode! Focused entirely on Adora and Catra and their past together. Like, just showing someone this episode alone could probably get them to want to watch the series. That was everything you needed to know about their dynamic and history together.

Also, that moment when Catra and her past self are looking at each other, while obviously Catra takes the opposite lesson, it reminded me of this fanart I'd once seen of Jason Todd, the Red Hood, looking at his past self as Robin. The past says to the future "You ruined everything". Catra could be happy but, ironically for someone who hates Shadow Weaver, she's probably going to be a lot like her, sacrificing everything for power and ambition.

Given the way she looked, I'm guessing Shadow Weaver is either addicted to the power of the Black Garnet or she suffered some kind of past injury and its power is the only thing keeping her going. Or both.

Episode 12: I'll be honest, Swiftwind being able to talk kind of gobsmacked and I needed a moment to recover. What a great voice they chose for that character.

So She-Ra is kind of like the legendary heroes from Rising of the Shield Hero, coming from a long line of people chosen to wield the sword. I tend to dislike chosen one types of stories because I think prophecy takes a lot of weight out of the character's actions, so this and Avatar are more what I like. The MC is special but not the only one who's ever been special and they can still easily fail. Their destiny was only to be able to use the weapon, not that they would succeed in any specific purpose.

And dang, Catra's turn against Shadow Weaver happened faster than I thought it would but I'm not complaining. That great "This is what you've really been preparing me for" speech and Hordak, again, being an intelligent villain. "Oh, this experiment could net me a MASSIVE gain and all it could potentially cost me is this rock I already gave away to someone who lately hasn't been producing any results and has been consistently disobeying me. Yeah, I'm going to let this play out."

Episode 13: That was kind of a brutal fight between Adora and Catra. Not the worst I've ever seen even in other shows for this age range (Samurai Jack, for example) but those punches are connecting and those claws are leaving marks.

Also, maybe I'm just misunderstanding the exact situation but shouldn't the good guys' side be called the Resistance instead of the Rebellion? Being a rebellion would imply they are rebelling against an established power or rule over them, but the actual conflict we are shown is the established power and rule that is the kingdoms of Eternia resisting an outside force that wishes to establish a new order over them.

Season 1 verdict: I'm into it. I'm definitely more invested in the villains' side of things but that's not a fault of the series, that stuff is just way more geared towards me than the current princess stuff. I actively am at attention whenever the horde main characters are on screen. For the good guys it's mostly Adora and the She-Ra stuff I'm invested it. That isn't to say I have any real dislikes for that side. Bow especially I'm liking much more than I thought I might. He has kind of this gravitational pull around him. You will be his friend regardless of how much you might want to resist. He's definitely the rock for everyone else to hold onto.

Minor side note, kind of like Korra in Legend of Korra, I love how even when her powers aren't active Adora is shown to still be pretty strong physically with how easily she was lifting people up at the prom.

And I was right, Scorpia is my favorite side character.

On to season 2!

7. Hinata Shouyo

I'm a huge softie for first year tbh like.. WHO DOESN'T.

You know how Hinata supposed to ride his bike trough the mountain for half an hour and nu-uh baby you don't have to do that.

He doesn't mind though, he got his trusty rain coat stored back in his bag.

BUT STILL.

You insist at having the boys staying over night in your house. Watching you and Daichi having an argument it's like watching his parents quarelling.

"What about the others with a far house? Like Hinata, huh?"

DING DING DING! You - 1, Daichi - 0.

Hinata, being the most happy-go-lucky boi he is walks to your house with the most brightest grin.

You two are basically close enough, a lot of the first years really adores you. Because of your motherly side and well, your scary sides sometimes almost scares them more than Daichi's.

But Hinata, boy he is your favorites. He's the most brightest cheerful boy you've ever met and he's just like a baby brother..

To you, at least.

"Na na (Y/n)-senpai, do you have any siblings?" He asked. You nods. "Mhm i have one. He's on junior high. He's about your height." You jokes, knowing so well that Hinata will be pissed about it. And he did, he start complaining and protesting despite the rainy weather.

God you love him so much.

After unlocking the doors, you all entered the house quickly because the weather is just getting more worse. After distributing the towel, you went to bath.

While Hinata and the others busy looking around your house.

"Woaaah.. So this is what a girl's house look like.." he accidentally blurts out his thought. "Well yeah, never see a normal house before?" Tsukishima scoffs.

"Damn it Tsukishima. Shut up!" "Hey don't talk to Tsukki like that!" Yelp Yamaguchi.

After waiting for a bit the boys finally got to shower. Some of the third years showers first so he waits. But his sharp nose picks up something. Something smells delicious. The third years are back from his bath too.

So he follows his instinct and trails the delicious aroma and he ended up in Kitchen. He was about to walk past the Kitchen but then..

His eyes- Oh my for the love of Asahi's beautiful hair. He witness someone's cornering you. He panicks. He saw the gorgeous golden karaage that's been served on the plate and quickly snatch a few of them.

Before any of you could say anything, he bowed so many times and left the kitchen at ungodly speed. Leaving both of you in awkward position.

He was munching the Kaarage only to realized that his face is still in panic state. So he went to the trusty ol' buddy. Kageyama lol.

"What happen? You run into a ghost or somethin? That's what you get for cutting the line dumb-" "Kageyama.. In the kitchen.."

Ah shoot, is he really going to tell him this?

"They were in the kitchen.. They.." But before he could explained, Kageyama already assumed first what he was going to say.. incorrectly.

"Sugawara-san is cornering (Y/n)-san.." he whispered. Maybe his whisper is a tad too loud. Someone might have heard that. Kageyama clench his towel and gets up.

Poor bby tried to stop him but gets thrown away instead. He never know what happen when Kageyama went to the Kitchen. All he want to do now is get to the hot shower and eats.

"Hinata you can go." A voice told him, it was Nishinoya. Hinata thanked him and went to bathroom. Before he can get to the bathroom, he get past the kitchen. Preparing himself to witness another 'intense moment' as he past by.

But he locks eyes with you instead. You eyes was a little gloomy. His heart suddenly got a little pinch when he see your unusual facial expression.

After showering, he went out. Fold his dirty clothes and join the others. Somehow your unusual expression gets him that hard. He hardly can focus on food when you and Sugawara served the main dish.

Of course he still talks and jokes around but you're the only one who noticed that Hinata's not as cheerful when he first enter your house.

"Um.. Due to lack of the space, one of you have to sleep with me."

As usual the two second years that are going after you fights over who's the one who gets to sleep with you.

Untill you pull Hinata from the crowds and grins.

"I choose Hinata, he's like my baby brother so i trust him!" You smiles as you hang your arms on his shoulder. Hinata cannot believe you just did but everyone strangely agrees.

"He's too dumb anyway, he won't do anything weird to (Y/n)-san." Ouch, He heard that.

You leave the door open as you prepare the mattress for him. Ofc he helps too. You two pull the mattress out and prepares it.

"Here's your pillow and blanket. Do you need anything else?" You kindly asked. Hinata shakes his head.

"Kay then, i'll turn off the lights!" Once you cut off the light, the dim room suddenly got so different. You jumped to your bed and wrap yourself in your soft fluffly blanket as you face Hinata's side.

"Hehehe, i feel like sleeping with my brother, it's somehow exciting." You chuckles. Hinata looks up, he tried to find your face in the dim room. Thanks to the moon that unexpectedly shines over you two, you both able to see each others faces.

You're surprised after seeing Hinata's face. He got that serious calm face just like when he about to take over the courts. It sometimes scares you how the loud boy can be so calm yet serious.

"Do i look like that to you, (Y/n)-senpai?" He asked. Sitting right up.

"Huh?"

"Do i really look like your baby brother?" He asked. You jokingly agrees. But when he gets up. You know he's serious now. Oh fuck.

"Did you forget that i'm a boy too?" His fast movement plus the dim room causing you to lower your guards and just in a second, he's already on top of you. Wait how?

"You know.. I saw how Suga-san cornering you like this in the kitchen earlier." He explained. Ah he did witness that.

"Don't treat me like a child, (Y/n)-san. I'm- I'm a man too!" He stated while making a manly face.

You can't help but smiles. Damn, you misunderstand him. You always thought that he just adore you because you're his senpai, turns out you're wrong. He got thus serious yet commited face. And don't forget a lil' flushed cheeks.

"I'm not a kid..." those were his last word before he falls down on your body and fall asleep.

You laughed and hugs him. Hugging him close to your chest.

"Of course you're not, Shouyou.."

8. Tsukishima Kei

Salt boi is here yall

He doesn't bother to say no when you offer him.

"Hah? No thanks. I'm not in the mood for sleepover."

But oh well you insist him to go in the end. And he does.

As expected, Tsukki didn't say much or even complained. Because he kept it inside. Pfft.

"Dang it why do i have to do this?" "i should've decline." "This is just a club, duh." "How many times i have to deal with this bunch of idiots."

He places his shoes and went in. Leaving everyone behind and drop himself to your couch.

While everyone are looking at him with the 'what-the-fuck' face and Daichi is ready to beat his ass, but you stopped them.

"It's alright you all. Tsukki is actually visited my house a lot so he gets used to it." You explained and everyone are shooked.

Everyone asked him why did he get to visit your house. He simply shrugs "Our parents are friends with each other."

Everyone never knew that you both are actually childhood friend. Well you and his older brother is. But you consider Tsukki's your childhood friend too because he used to tag along with his older brother and play together with you. Since middle school, he often visits your home. Along with Akiteru.

No one really notice this because of your rare interaction. Sure you often scolds him and talk ti him but no interaction outside the club activity.

While the other are making a ruckus he wondered. "It's been so long after i came here. When was it? Around Junior high i guess? Well, doesn't matter."

"Tsukki! You came here a lot? How come i never know??" Yamaguchi protest. He doesn't believe that his bestfriend is actually close with anyone.

"None of your bussiness Yamaguchi." He simply shut him up and dried his blonde hair.

His eyes wander around your living room. Nothing change since his last visit. He hates to admit it but it brings so much memories.

"Nee-chan, I like you!"

He snaps out. Fuck why is he remembering that now. He takes off his glass and massaged his temple as Hinata rushing back from the kitchen.

It didn't take too long for him to figure out everything because of Hinata's loud whispering. He knows what happen between you and Sugawara in the Kitchen.

It's none of his concern. Or is it?

So he didn't think about it and left to bath. Before he able to enter the bath, you tried to stop him and offer him a clean towel for him but ofc he refuse wdy expect.

Once he shut the door close, gotta admit he kinda hate seeing Sugawara touchy touchy with you. But tch, what's his problem. It's your problem, not his. So what if you date someone from the voleyball club, right?

...Right?

He left the bath feeling a little better and less annoyed. When he's back to the living room he saw how close you are to the senpais. Deep down, it honestly irks him. But oh well.

Just when he place himself infront of the table, you hand him his portion of rice. "Not too much, right? I still remember!" You smiled.

He thanked you then starts to eat. Tsukishima probably is the calmest when eating. While everybody laughs, jokes, and talks he keep quiet and focus on his food. Sure he add a littlr insults here and there but it doesn't distract him from his focus.

You love that side of Tsukishima. If only he can take Voleyball that serious, you thought to yourself.

After cleaning up and washing the dishesh, it's time to sleep.

Again, "Um... Due to the lack of space, one of you have to sleep with me."

Again, Tsukishima already prepared himself for sleeping anywhere. Anywhere is fine really. He just want to call it a night. Sleeping with you? It's out of his boundaries. He can never do that-

"Tsukishima? You alright?" Your voice snaps him out.

"Huh oh, me?"

"Yeah. You seems spacing out a lot lately." Tsukishima denies, only to realize that he's in your room and no one is around him.

"Wait. Where's everyone?" He wonder. You laughs. "They've gone to sleep. And you should too, Tsukki." You tap his back, giving him a little rub.

After you pulled the mattress out, Tsukishima helps you with the sheet and stuff. He didn't say a word. Is he okay, you always wonder.

"Can you turn the lights off, please?" You ask him. He reach for the lights and turns it off. When darkness hits you. It's like you're in a different room.

10 minute have passed and none of you made any sound. Ony the sound of your body turning over and over and the soft blanket.

"What is it? Can't sleep?" Tsukishima suddenly spoke out. You're kinda surprised a little. But you nods.

"Hey, don't you remember our first sleepover?-" "I didn't. Goodnight." He cuts you off and turns his back on you. Guess he's that tired afterall.

For god sake you've tried to close your eyes arpund hundred thousand times. But it won't. Tsukishima presence is making you hard to behave.

You face him. Looking over his broad back. He grew so fast. You barely stands a chance. You remember how you and him used to compare your height and he beats you. You remember how he used to play with you and Akiteru will suggest a weird yet fun ideas. And how that day, he... confess to you.

You snaps out when you feel a sudden hit in your hand. You look over to him and find his eyes looking at you. "Are you okay? Staring at the ceiling, not blinking for almost a minute now. I'm almost having a heart attack." He said followed with a laugh of yours.

"Sorry, reminiscing old times."

"What do you mean?"

"You know, our old times."

He suddenly became quiet again. You turn over him and rest your head at the corner of the bed. "Why.. Are you avoiding me?" Tsukishima scoffs. "Avoiding you? When?" "3 summers ago. When we're having our first sleepover. And you..."

Your heart and brain are niw deciding whether you should remind him or not. Not noticing your body being so close to the edge and boom.

You fell right trough to his body. What a coincidence right. "What the- Get off me!" He pushed you off. Ouch..

You sits on his bed. Your heart is still aching from him raising his voice. You looks away.

"Do you hate me that much? I tried to talk to you but you never listen." Tsukki looks over to you. His blurry gaze didn't help so he sits right up too and faces you.

"What is your problem? Can't you just sleep quietly?" "I cannot!" "Well then stop bothering me!" ..He might have gone too far.

Is that you've been doing? Bothering him..?

Ah fuck, never knew getting told off like this will hurt your heart that much.

"Fine, Sorry. I'll stop." You climbs up to your bed. Ignoring your aching heart you decided to close your eyes.

Until you feel a warm presence behind you. You know it's him. "What are you-" "Shut up and listen. Don't cut me off and let me finish." He stated. Your silence showing that you agrees.

"I still remember our first sleepover. I remember how we can't sleep untill 2. While Akiteru-nii is sleeping, we talk and jokes until the night goes away. But one thing that i want to forget that night is when i..." he stops for a while, seems lost. His left hand is resting on your waist. You holds his hand. Calming him.

"When i confess to you. I want to erase that memory from my mind but lucky me huh, we met again. So it's a fail." You turn around and cups his face. "..Are you assuming that night that i rejected you, Kei?" He didn't expect this. What the hell?

You chuckles, seeing his clueless face is funny. "You stupid giraffe. It's my first confession dummy. I don't know how to react so i just left you off and sleep without thinking about it. But now that i think about it.." your cheeks heating up. Ah shit.

You two are so close. There's barely any distance left. His arms suddenly pushed you into his hug. Resting your head in his chest.

"In case you want to know. My feelings haven't change a slightest."

9. Yamaguchi Tadashi.

Look at that. You've been blessed by his precious smile.

Cutie didn't want to bother you at first. But Tsukki's joining so why not?

As you already know, the first year are well obsessed? Not really, but all of them put you in a special place in their heart.

Especially for Yamaguchi.

You know his struggle. His pain. His grieve when he failed that pinch serve.

You're the one who calms him down and be there for him. His panic, he almost burst out to tears and he did, he tried to leave but you stopped him and hugs him while he's crying like a baby in your hug.

And of course after that he developed a huge crush on you.

He's amazed on how you're able to handle most of them from the craziest, loudest one to the saltiest and quietest one.

When he step into your house, he barely even realize that his face shows how happy he is. Spending a night in your house, what is this a dream?

'Till he found out that his bestfriend, Tsukishima is your childhood friend. And he never knew anything. At. All.

"Tsukki? You came here a lot? How come i never knew??" And as usual Tsukishima shuts him up

He lost a little bit of his hope. Poor baby :(

You and Yamaguchi is always a good.. friend? I mean you both comfort each other. But being their Senior and their Manager, it's your job right?

But then he heard that Sugawara-senpai is- what? Cornering you? What is going on?

His heart immediately panicks and over-thinking.

It's true that everyone want to have you, but.. He cannot lose. He won't.

For a whole day he keeps himself quiet. More quiet than the usual. From the bath to dinner. And you don't even notice. Weird, usually you notice right away.. But oh well, he can talk to you later, right?

And the time came.

"Um.. Due to the lack of space, one of you have to sleep with me."

His heart jolts up. His chance for talking to you.

He locked eyes with you. Hoping you notice him. But.. You didn't. And in the end, you decided to sleep alone. Shoot. "There goes my chance." He thought.

The coldness in the living room is not comfortable at all. His mind is still going around on you, you, and only you. He need to talk to you. So he made up his mind.

He sloowly make his way to your room. Knocking it lightly to inform you. But no answer. A minute has passed since the last knock went on your door. "She's probably asleep.." But the door's open. And he got a glimpse of you in your bed. Getting sleepy but still a little awake.

Then your eyes met. Yamaguchi squeak and tried to run away. "Wait! Yamaguchi!" And he freezes on the spot. You walk over and opens the door.

"What is it?" Your gentle smile flies is a cure for his worries and thoughts.

"I-I.. But you already asleep, i shouldn't bother you, I'm sorry.."

"No no! It's alright. Come here." You says with a smiles. God his heart feel at ease. He quietly walk closer and enter your room.

He's embarassed and it shows. His fidgety moves and the sweaty palms.

You pull the mini mattress below your bed and Yamaguchi immediately helps you. You both then sits on top of it.

"What is it you want to talk, hm?" You look over to the shy boy. He let out a sigh and then his arms wraps around you. You're quiet a bit surprise seeing him hugs you first. Usually you're the one who hugs him first if he's having a breakdown.

"Let me recharge, senpai.." Yes. You're his source of battery. Being around you or near you giving him energy that will make him last a whole day.

"Sure thing, Tadashi." You ruffles his dark green hair. You can feel his breath tickling your neck. And it's the time. "Okay now, go to sleep-" "No. Wait, don't pull away.. Not yet." He hugs you tighter, not letting you go.

"You're warm, Senpai.. And you look really cute in that pajamas." He whispered to your ears. Causing your face to turns into a blushing mess.

"What the hell Tadashi, when did you learn to sweet talk like this, huh?!" You hit his head lightly.

"Ow! I didn't, i mean it.." the boy green haired boy rubs his head as he snuggles to you.

"I know Tadashi. And it works."

Excerpt

Stars are kind of funny, they’re big and beautiful but they’ve got to be lonely up there, always watching us.

Chapter 1

Her music is already playing, feet pad along the carpet as she dances to her favorite playlist. I should get up and join her, instead, I just watch her.

The sun rise casts streams of light over her as she swishes her hips and turns. Her arms reach toward the ceiling, perfectly displaying the two black outlined stars on the front of her shoulder. Her eyes are closed, her long dark hair spilling over her shoulders and down her back. She has a cup of tea in her hand, the one with the Eiffel tower on it and Paris written across it. Pumpkin spice filling the air as she carries it back and forth. She peels her eyes open and smiles when she sees me.

“Morning.” She plops down on the bed and offers me a cookie.

“Isn’t it too early for sweets?” I ask as she waves the cookie back and forth in front of me.

“Nope.” Her smile widens “not when you have tea.” She sips her tea, her reddish-brown lipstick leaving a perfect print of her lips on the rim of the cup.

“You’ve already got your make up on?” I grab my phone and check the time

“It’s only six.” I drop my head back onto the pillow.

“I know.” She nods, “the suns up.”

“Suns up so you’re up.” I roll my eyes. She says it every morning. I wrap my arm around her waist and slide her across the bed, just to hold her against me. She giggles holding her cup steady as she eats her cookie and everything is perfect. She is perfect.

“I love you, Lana.” I breathe in her scent and I press my face into her back. She’s not floral like perfume. She just smells like Lana.

“I love you, Theo.” She sips her tea and her fuzzy pajamas are soft against my face.

God I love this girl I hold her tighter. I don’t want to let her go when she taps my arm and wiggles to escape my grasp.

“Up, let’s go.” She spanks me.

“Too early for that.” I mumble pulling the pillow over my head, leaving just enough room to watch her walk out.

“I’ll leave without you.”

“I’m up!” I close my eyes just for one… more… minute...

“Theo!” She snaps, ripping the blanket away from me. “Come on, lets go.”

“Where?”

She’s already dressed, she dresses like a hipster. Her sweater is striped with black, grey, white and yellow. Her jeans hug her curves perfectly leading down to her heeled boots. She’s wearing her favorite black fedora, the one with the smaller brim. She extends a similar fedora to me.

“Match with me today.” She’s smiling. Matching is kind of cheesy but if it makes her happy, I’ll do it. I’ll do anything to keep her happy.

“Did you pick my clothes out before or after yours?” I eye her, from the blankets.

“Come find out. She sets the hat down and tugs on my arm. “Let’s go.” She pulls on my arm. I sigh but help her drag me out of bed.

The smell of coffee is all I care about as I stir the instant grounds into my own mug. Lana is perched on the make-shift window seat in the corner as she sips on her second cup of tea. I take a seat at the table, it’s too early to be staring directly into the sun but she loves it. It’s like she’s afraid of missing even a second of the sun.

Her eyes are closed when I look back at her. She’s feeling the sun on her skin, the warmth of the cup in her hand. She appreciates those things. I just appreciate her.

“What time are Alex and Shaina meeting us at the café?” Lana doesn’t open her eyes, just angles her face the slightest bit towards me.

“Ten.” Her chest rises and falls as she breathes deeply.

“That sounds like we can fit an hour or two nap in before we go.” I suggest drinking my own morning addiction.

“Or we could go and explore the area around the Café and then meet up with them.” Her face never loses its relaxed expression.

“or…we could explore afterward.” I suggest.

“You can take a nap.”

“Just me?” I love her curious nature, but she can be difficult to keep up with.

“I can explore on my own for a bit and meet up with you at the Café with Alex and Shaina.” There’s not a trace of annoyance on her face or in her voice right now. That’s another thing I love about her, she never holds a grudge.

“Fine.” I sigh “I’ll come with you, but you owe me a donut.”

“I’ve got just enough for a donut.” She smiles, her eyes gliding open to look at me. Her eyes are this super dark brown, they almost look like the same color as her lipstick when the light shines directly on them.

“Alright then, I’m bought.” I take another drink and she goes back to watching the sun rise and we don’t talk. I love that we don’t need to talk.

“Here here here!” Lana jumps onto the edge of a fountain and hands me her phone “take a picture of me!” She’s always so excited. I raise the phone as she poses.

“You’re awfully excited about a fountain.” I laugh.

“It’s not just a fountain.” She smiles wide with her mouth open and her leg up and I take another picture.

“The sun hits here so perfectly.” She raises her arms to the sky and she spins. She never falls, how does she never fall?

I take another picture because I want to look at them when I don’t have her next to me.

“Over here!” Lana jumps off the fountain edge and sits on a bench. She crosses her legs and holds her arms out in an exaggerated shrug, and I take another picture.

“Sit.” She orders patting the seat beside her. I do and she wraps her arms around me, and I turned the camera on us. She hangs on my neck and my shoulders and she sticks her tongue out and holds out a peace sign and I take another picture. She smiles at me and I take another picture. I kiss her and I take another picture. I love the way her lips feel against mine.

“It’s almost time.” She says against my lips. I pull her into my lap, and take another picture.

“They can wait.” I manage to not break our kiss.

“It’s rude to keep people waiting.” She kisses me back and she hops out of my lap and she’s standing there, and she’s got that look on her face that says she’s feeling impatient.

“Life’s too short for waiting.” She grabs my hand and she pulls me up and we run down the street to the café and I love the way her hand feels around mine.

I let her lead me to our usual booth in the center of the biggest window. She pulls me in, and she presses against the window.

“It’s nine fifty-eight.” I tell her “what if they keep us waiting?”

“Then I’ll drink tea and you’ll drink coffee and we’ll enjoy each other’s presence.” She watches the people outside the window, her face so close her breath is fogging it.

“Can I start you off with something.” Hazel comes to our table with a notebook and pen that has a big fuzzy poof on one end.

“Yeah, if we could get a black coffee and a tea please.” I offer a smile to the her.

“Sure thing, what kind of tea?” Hazel glances to Lana, guessing who the tea is for. Lana turns a brilliant smile on the waitress.

“Chamomile, please.”

“Little early for caffeine free, isn’t it?” Hazel chuckles. Lana smiles back. I love her smile.

“If she had anymore caffeine she wouldn’t be sitting.” I joke. Hazel laughs and Lana wrinkles her nose at me before she goes back to staring out the window. I take the chance to check my phone. There’s an email notification at the top of the screen, one of the agents I queried. My hands shake as I click on the email.

“You’ll get it.” Her arms wrap around mine and gives me a squeeze. She tilts her head back trying to maneuver around her hat and presses her lips to my cheek. “The right one will take your book, you’ll see.” I can feel her smile against my cheek.

“Thanks.” I tuck my phone away and take her hand with my other arm that was one of my top five. I try to shake the disappointment off, I knew this was going to be hard when I started. I just didn’t know rejection was going to actually hurt. At least I have Lana to soothe the sting. I kiss the top of Lana’s hat.

“Lana!” Shaina screams.

“Shaina!” Lana’s voice is much gentler than Shaina’s.

“You okay?” She whispers to me. I nod and Lana swings her legs over me and throws herself at Shaina.

“Hey man.” Alex maneuvers around Shaina and Lana and slides into the opposite side of the booth.

“Hey.” I sigh and sit back.

“Another rejection?” Alex asks.

“Yeah.” I nod as Lana and Shaina step over Alex and me and take the seats next to the window.

“So…” Lana leans over the table “how’ve you been?”

“You mean since two weeks ago? when we last saw them.” I laugh.

“a lot can happen in two weeks.” Lana slides a glance at me “. “We got together within two weeks and we got our apartment within two weeks.” She turns her attention back to Shaina.

“You know you don’t challenge her.” Shaina giggles. Her hair is a mess of curls, her skin a coppery golden color. Lana is a little jealous, in a friendly kind of way, of Shaina’s skin. I try not to think of the conversations Lana and I have had over Shaina. Although her skin is inhumanly perfect.

“He’s still sleepy.” Lana explains, as Hazel comes back with our drinks.

“Two more coffees.” Shaina bats her long lashes at Hazel, “and could we get a bowl of creamers and sugar packets too please.”

“And a blueberry donut.” Lana tacks on, smiling at me as if to say of course she remembered.

“Alrighty.” Hazel, bobs her head and goes to retrieve the coffees.

“We’ve been good.” Shaina says, sliding a smile at Alex. Alex smiles back “just hanging out, exploring the city… dropping to one knee…” Shaina dangles a hand in front of Lana and Lana squeals.

“He did not!” She exclaims excitedly looking Shaina’s hand over.

“What?” I try to look passed Lana but she’s practically on the table now.

“Theo, look!” She squeaks yanking Shaina’s hand over the table for me to see. Sitting on Shaina’s ring finger is a small clear stone.

“You didn’t, Alex.” I can’t help the laughter bubbling out of me.

“Course I did.” Alex snakes his arm out around Shaina and pulls her against him “I love her, I want her to be mine forever and I want everyone to know it.” Alex pulls Shaina against him, I slide a glance at Lana. She’s smiling, her face glowing as she looks at Alex and Shaina. Her eyes just a little bit unfocused, maybe imagining me proposing to her.

Should I?

Lana rests her chin on her hand.

I don’t even have money for a ring. Sweat beads along my hairline thanks a lot, man I glare at Alex across the table but he’s too busy with Shaina to notice.

“You guys are so cute.” Lana sits back in the seat. I try to find a trace of jealousy or longing on her face but when she turns her eyes to me, she looks the same as always, content.

“Aren’t they?” She asks me. I’ve never met a person as sincere as Lana. I can’t help but smile back at her even though I’m still bummed over the rejection letter and the news of Alex one upping me on good boyfriend status.

“Yeah.” I wrap my arm around her shoulders and pull her against me “They’re so cute.” I mimic her. She laughs and lets herself rest against me as she drinks of her tea.

I love you I will her to hear me.

“I love you, Theo.” She whispers into her cup just loud enough for me to hear.

I guess she did hear me.
