I think something that gets me so much about Wen Kexing in Word of Honor, is his line "It's too late." He uses it twice when Zhou Zishu is going on about how he's finally found Zhen Yan again, and then a few more times when Shen Shen confronts him about his parents. At that point, he cries out in despair- "They're both dead, along with Zhen Yan." And it's just so completely gutting.

I have a unique experience of being betrayed, of my family being hurt, by people who I trusted, who formed a large part of my community, my identity, and who I thought would help us in time of need. It led to such a horrible traumatic experience, for all of us. And it does feel like a part of me has died. I keep meeting people who are part of this community (and have nothing to do with the others) and they still believe in it and wonder why I don't. But the reality is, I don't have the ability to anymore. I suspect I will regard this community with distrust and skepticism for years to come. It is indeed too late. The part of me that believed is long gone, replaced with anger and trauma that will never fully heal.

I am in a unique position to understand why Wen Kexing had such a burning desire to burn the world down and himself along with it. Because sometimes, all you want to do after such a horrible betrayal is hurt the ones who hurt you. Calling them dogs and demons doesn't even faze me. Even though there is good people in the mix, they didn't do anything to help and so they're going to be part of the pyre too.

So at the end of the series, when Wen Kexing takes his revenge on Zhao Jing, and calls out the Jianghu for namedropping his father but not helping them, it gives me a very sick sense of satisfaction. That's what I wish I could do as well, but I can only engage in the catharsis that fiction allows.

Wen Kexing is a fucked up little guy. But he's my fucked up little guy. And I understand him perfectly.

He is warmth. Like a sun licking its heat to your face in the morning. That was his first impression. He is also vibrant. Colorful like his hanfu robes. He is also constant. He is also attentive, especially to my needs. Never told him of mine, but he knows anyway.

At every moment, my lips will curl up (slightly and without noticing, but he still able to catch) at his antics. He brings me joy and happiness. Sometimes, I am afraid. Not afraid of him, but afraid for him. He is careless with his own, but care for others. If I'm emotionless and precise, he is violent passion and unhinged. Lunatic they call him. But, I knows more than that.

He is Zhen Yan. But he is Wen Kexing. Guigu guzhu and Siji Shanzhuang er-shidi . My zhiji.

Thoughts of Zhou Zishu of Wen Kexing.

Day 1: Wen Kexing

It is hard to trust anyone. Trust is not what she has in spades. Trust is something to be broken.

The first time she trust someone was with her family. But her family betrayed her for wealth by trading her happiness. The second time was with her lover. In the end, her beloved trade it for wealth and fame too. And thus, she kill her family members and leave the sect. After all, what use she had as the firstborn of Luo clan but political marriage?

She never made to trust anyone in Guigu. That was how she raise in rank. That is also the foundation of her Boqing Bu. She even did not trust the Zhen couple. Only use them for the purpose of her betterment. But, she knows their worth. For all that happened, the loss of the couple was something she regret for.

Ironically, she learn to trust back through the Zhen's progeny. The young man that she knows now as Wen Kexing. Slowly, she learn to trust the Yan Gui. She learn to trust Shishi Gui. She learn to trust her guzhu. And thus, she learn to trust her Boqing Bu.

When she was caught, it was Yan Gui who she relied heavily. When she was sick, it was Wu Xin Zi Sha she ask for medicine. When her Boqing Bu girls were being harassed, it was Shishi Gui who protected them and ultimately, with her life and freedom, it is Wen Kexing who she trust implicitly. For all the lunacy act and spew, she was the one who care for him albeit indirectly. And he too.

Learning to trust is easier but letting go of grudges is not. They are a band of misfits, with having trust issue first and foremost. But they are all they had and they stay true together until the end...

Day 3: Trust

What is Gui? Persona non grata by the jianghu?

They do not know their names. Do not know of their lives before this. Do not know if they have relatives, families or even lovers. All they knows is they are unnamed entity, casted out by society due to criminal records and unwanted.

But how about children? The children that were being kidnapped, or born inside Guigu? Are they also being called as Ghost too?

What about those who are misunderstood, who never harms and took lives? Who being cast aside due to greedy person? Or been cast out from orthodox sects?

In the end, nothing matters as they become new entity, never to remember their past life, grudges and even the things they obsessed most. They are just foot soldiers, made into invisibility, into whim and as dispensable by the ever changing Valley Masters, until their newest leader, The Lunatic Wen.

Ever since he kill the previous guzhu, he sometimes see the man haunting him around. Mocking him of being too soft, too lenient. Not fit to take the mantle of Guigu guzhu. The man literally vanish, with horror on his face when the last remnant of the 10 Devils under the previous guzhu died with the same method as he did.

When he with Ah Xu, sometimes the people he killed dogged around him, casting displeasure upon them together. Mocking him, throwing him with sharp and jagged words. Sometimes they are not around. Sometimes they do. It keeps reminding him that he is not worthy of Ah Xu, a monster beneath the skin of Wen Kexing.

After he mete justice upon Zhao Jing, when he is in Siji Shanzhuang, his parents and his first shifu is there. Smiling upon him, lightly touching and whispering proud and happiness. It is still not enough. He is still not worthy of Ah Xu.

In the end, it is Ah Xu's lips, Ah Xu's words, Ah Xu's love that ghosting around him, with care and love that makes him full, brimming with happiness and enough to make as his ablution.

Day 6: Ghost

Water is inorganic, transparent, tasteless, odourless and in liquid form is a matter without definite shape. She is just like that after being cast out by her lover and society.

She become the embodiment of water. Often time changing colour when she had orders from her chief. In overall, she was being painted by him, being given a new taste and colour, shaped by his own hand. After all, her chief was the one who saved her and in turn, she protected him of what she could.

Yan Gui, her chief called her. Even with scars, the man who was once a teen when they met, call her beautiful. Even though Xi Sang Gui the one who cared for her during her confinement, when her child did not survive. It was the Chief who was the one protected her from the fate worst than death. At that time, he was still a nobody in the Ghost Valley, putting the ire on himself to the previous Guzhu.

She become fluid for her master. To both Xi Sang Gui and Guigu Guzhu.

Day 19: Water
