when wei wuxian asked lan wangji to marry and received a positive answer, most of the lan sect knew there wouldn't be grand courting gifts, nor it would be expensive, as he and his parents were rogue cultivators.

what they didn't expect was wei changze himself arriving in cloud recesses with four big wooden chests, intricately carved with wedding symbolisms saying it was his son's gifts.

they sat inside the formal room, curiously waiting to see what was inside the chest. lan wangji looked impassive as usual, but his fingers were twitching with barely stifled desire to open the chests himself.

the first one was opened.

"lan-er-gongzi, here's the first gift from your betrothed." wei changze smiled softly and brought his hands out of the chest, a beautifully made sky blue robe with a silver dragon embroidered on the back "a robe for you made by your betrothed's hands. a-ying not only embroidered but also sewed the cloth he himself chose especially for you."

all the lans were surprised and impressed, it was clearly well made, it could easily pass by professionally made.

"the second gift" wei changze continues, opening the second chest "is a pair of bunnies carved in white jade by your betrothed." he put the, frankly big, pair of jade animals on the floor in front of lan wangji, who immediately snatched one to look up close.

again, the lans were impressed. who would know that wei-gongzi was so accomplished.

"the third and last gift for now" wei changze opened the last chest "is a pair of guans carved in wood, a pair of hairpins of blue and white jade, and a pair of tassels in the same colors." he put one by one beside the lonely bunny "all made and carved by a-ying himself."

the lans were truly astonished. the gifts were all beautiful and well made, almost as if wei-gongzi was a professional in these sections. and were all of immeasurable price. blue jade! the boy had blue jade to carve! and many white jades to choose what to do with it!

lan xichen could barely blink! lan qiren felt his own mouth open.

"thank you.... a-die." lan wangji bowed, showing, for once, his shy side.

wei changze just chuckled "there's nothing to thank me, a-zhan, just make our a-ying happy."

"mn." lan wangji nodded firmly "will make beautiful gifts for wei ying."

the rogue cultivator chuckled again, and bowed "for the next round of gifts, a-ying wishes to focus on cultivation, if it's ok with you?"

"definitely." lan xichen said, before coughing softly into his hand and smiling "we will be happy with anything wei-gongzi thinks is valuable."

"of course." wei changze nodded with a smile.

later that night, past curfew, most lans that were inside that room would find hard to sleep, thinking about the gifts received and the ones yet to come.

all but one.

lan wangji slept soundly, a tiny smile in his lips as he dreamed of his future.

Neither he nor Wei Wuxian are able to bear children, so there will be no need to share a marital bed; that should make it easier for the two of them to reach a natural, comfortable equilibrium. Two strings played in harmony: this is Lan Wangji’s quiet hope, as he arranges the Jingshi to accommodate a second inhabitant. Perhaps, he thinks, they might even become friends.

Kay's comments: Oh. Wow. Ouch. This story was exquisitely painful. The hurt was strong in this one. Ouch. I loved every moment of it. In which Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji find themselves in an arranged marriage and Wei Wuxian tries to make a home in the Cloud Recesses, but it's not working out. Lan Wangji watches as his husband slowly burns out and succumbs to depression and it takes him a while to understand his part in it and his family's part in it and how stifling the rules and the Cloud Recesses as a whole are for someone like Wei Wuxian. In the end, when he finally tries to make amends, he's almost too late.

Excerpt: Lan Wangji is, frankly, relieved to hear it. But it is not enough. “Some thoughts,” he says quietly, “are too dangerous to experiment with.” Wei Wuxian steps back. He studies Lan Wangji. After a long silence, he says, “That’s how deep it goes, ah?” Lan Wangji does not understand. “Not just things you can’t do,” Wei Wuxian says, with a Lan-like stillness to his face that Lan Wangji has only seen him wear once before. “Not just words you can’t say, or places you can’t go. But thoughts you can’t think. In a sect of scholars.” Lan Wangji still does not grasp his point. But he senses that Gusu Lan is being mocked. His grip on Bichen tightens, and he turns toward the door.

I love your mdzs metas, especally the one where you say MDZS is not a hopeful universe and you can't fix it by just saying the Jin Sect is evil because the real problem is the powerful society.

And that post inspired my ask here.

I'd like to hear your thoughts about Lan Wangji deciding to remain in Gusu Lan Sect after wei ying's death. It's clear to me that his strong moral compass doesn't coincide anymore with the sect who was accomplice in the siege at burial mounds. Yeah his family wasn't the direct responsible of Wei Ying and the Wens' deaths, but still involved. I think his relationship with his family after Nightless city was deeply broken, not just emotionally but also morally. I think it would have been wiser leaving his seft after recovering from the wounds and being a rogue cultivator. Or living as a common with a-yuan, because I don't see how they could cohabit together after what happened. Or maybe lwj decided he was guilty as well for not being able to protect wei ying (and the wens), so he lived in remorse and guilt in the sect that allowed that crime? I'm curious about this dilemma because the novel doesn't explain fully in details that period of time. I was just thinking: "why lwj couldn't just live away from the sect after witnessing that their values ​​were no longer compatible and the corrupted cultivation society could no longer be his home". It would have been more coherent and right for him, I think. No one could blame him. Or maybe the punishment hurt him so deeply that he grow to think he deserved it... surely living there in gusu lan sect is not the healthiest option for his state of mind (we could agree that lwj doesn't care about money and privilege). So... why did he stay there and didn't choose another road?

There are factors we have to consider in this – practical, emotional, and thematic.

Firstly, there are the logistical (and most boring) reasons. After Lan Wangji brings A-Yuan back from the Burial Mounds, he’s responsible for him – and while he could take A-Yuan with him when leaving the sect, A-Yuan would have a much harder (and lonelier) childhood growing up as the child of a rogue cultivator, than he would growing up in the security of a prosperous sect with other disciples of the same age around him. We have an example of the former with Wei Wuxian himself, actually! And though he seemed to have a happy childhood, it certainly wasn’t secure, and at the age of five his parents, who were also very capable cultivators, died on a night-hunt while he was left at an inn (which probably happened regularly, because I can’t see his parents bringing him with them while on a night-hunt). If being raised in the Lan sect was an option, I don’t think Lan Wangji would choose to give A-Yuan that sort of very insecure childhood. I can’t really see him leaving A-Yuan at Gusu and defecting by himself either, especially with how reluctant his family was to accept a Wen into Gusu Lan anyway*.

Additionally, it’s important to remember that when Wei Wuxian dies, Lan Wangji is heavily injured from the disciple whip, and has to spend years recovering – he wouldn’t physically be able to become a rogue cultivator in that condition, even if he wanted to! And after he’s recovered, Lan Sizhui has already been a member of the sect for some time – again, I can’t see Lan Wangji taking him away from that.

Lastly, and very importantly, he holds a lot more influence as the second young master and Twin Jade of the Lan Clan (to the cultivation world at least – his reputation to the common people was made on his own merits!) than he would as a rogue cultivator... and that brings us to the second idea: Lan Wangji’s feelings and motivations.

Because I agree with the fact that the majority of the Lan sect, at the time of the siege, wasn't morally compatible with Lan Wangji's own ideals. But instead of leaving the sect and letting that corruption and hypocrisy stay and fester, he chooses to stay and work towards making a difference – to make it compatible, to shape it into the righteous sect it claims to be. He uses his position to teach an entire generation of juniors to be open-minded, compassionate and brave, and to not let the rules stop you from doing so (with Lan Sizhui as the primary example, but you see that in the others, too – he didn't spend all his time raising just A-Yuan). So that if or when another situation like the Siege or the Wen camps arises, they'll have the forethought to think about the situation and not be driven by mob mentality, the understanding to not fall victim to prejudice, and the courage to stand up and do the right thing, even if that means breaking some rules, because certain things are more important.

He teaches that to the people who he knows are the future of the Lan Sect, and when they take over, Gusu Lan can become the righteous sect it claims to be.

That's what he chooses to do, and chooses to do again and again – to take the initiative to make the world into a good place, when it isn't one. He didn't gain a reputation as Hanguang-Jun, for going wherever the chaos is and spending his time helping people rather than chasing acclaim, for nothing. If the sects aren't going to help, he's going to do something about it, and time and time again he does.

And that's infinitely more powerful than just walking away.

As we’re talking about Lan Wangji’s emotions and decisions, let’s consider your other thought, too: that Lan Wangji perhaps stayed because he thought he deserved it as a punishment. I don’t really believe that’s the case – not because Lan WangJi doesn’t have any turbulent feelings of guilt and regret, but because punishing himself is simply not the way he chooses to act on them. There is the scenario with the Wen brand, but it’s crucial to note that he’s drunk during that scene! It may show us his subconscious thoughts and feelings, but it doesn’t show how he’d act on them, because he doesn’t actually have the power to make conscious, meaningful decisions. However, when he does have that power, he consistently chooses to channel his grief into the inspiration and drive to not make those same mistakes, instead of channeling it into self-loathing, or even resentment for others. Instead of punishing himself for what he couldn’t do then, he focuses on what he can do now – raising A-Yuan and teaching the Lan Juniors are some examples of that. 

He and Wei Wuxian are quite similar in that aspect (another way they’re alike), and both actually have very healthy ways of coping with what happened in the past! Neither of them punish themselves over what they did wrong and can’t change, but instead focus on the present moment – and likewise, neither of them unhealthily fixate on those they’ve lost and get stuck in the past, but instead carry them with them and keep their memory alive, while accepting they’ve passed on**. However, I do think that Lan Wangji uses the past, and more specifically his grief, a lot more than Wei Wuxian, and actively channels it into not repeating the same mistakes he did. Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian simply lets the past be (while still acknowledging it) and focuses on the present. Both are very healthy ways of treating grief! 

Finally, Lan Wangji choosing this path also makes the most sense thematically. One of the main themes of the novel is the idea of moving on from resentment – the most obvious example of this is Wei Wuxian himself, but it appears in so many other characters, too. Wen Ning, for example, who decides to save Jiang Cheng from Nie Mingjue’s corpse, even after everything Jiang Cheng did to his family at the Burial Mounds. The rest of the Wen remnants, who, when they emerge from the blood pool, choose to channel their power into protecting people rather than doing something harmful (which sounds a little familiar, no?); Lan Sizhui, who after finding out about his heritage continues to be kind and compassionate even to the members of sects who were responsible for what happened; Jin Ling, who’s been brought up in an atmosphere of resentment his whole life, but learns to let go of that and has a breakdown because he realised he simply couldn’t hate anyone for the deaths of his parents!

Alternatively, if you look at the antagonists, all of them (apart from Jin Guangshan, who was driven by greed) held on to resentment in some way, and let it fester. Regardless of what people think of him, Jiang Cheng plays an antagonist’s role in the present storyline, and a big part of his character is that he let his resentment for Wei Wuxian fester instead of letting it go, and that leads him to convince himself that Wei Wuxian is still alive somewhere and therefore to him torturing demonic cultivators – and that resentment (along with poorly expressed care for Jin Ling) pretty much drives all his actions in the present timeline. Jin Guangyao’s driven by resentment for people disrespecting him and his mother because of their heritage/job, Su She is driven by resentment of Lan Wangji. Xue Yang is driven by resentment for Xiao Xingchen, and holds onto that motivation, convinces himself of it, even when his feelings get more complicated – and ultimately chooses to act in accordance with that. Even Nie Huaisang, whose role in the narrative is admittedly dubious, is driven by resentment for his brother’s death, and that is not presented as right.

Neither group of characters has suffered more than the others, and you could even argue that the first group suffered more. However, the thing that sets them apart is the way they deal with resentment. And so we come to Lan Wangji. 

Like so many other characters, he has ample reason to turn his back on the cultivation world, to not forgive and to place more importance on his negative feelings towards others than on anything positive. But just like so many other people – like Wei WuXian, like Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui, like Jin Ling – he chooses to not focus on his resentment. He gives his sect a chance, while still preserving Wei Wuxian’s memory, while still accepting they did something wrong. Lan Wangji is not somebody driven by resentment, and not someone to hold onto it; he’s someone driven by love***.

And being a member of the Lan clan won’t constrain him from that.

*Edit: Apparently it’s only Lan Qiren who was reluctant to accept him until he saw Lan Wangji’s behaviour! But with the general prejudice against the Wens, I feel like that (not necessarily the family, but other people) was still a factor in him not wanting to leave A-Yuan alone. They didn’t tell anyone, but if anyone somehow found out, that was a risk. Thanks to kimalysomg for catching that!

**Which is part of the reason takes that say Lan Wangji spent the thirteen years searching for and waiting for Wei Wuxian bother me, actually! It very much undermines Lan Wangji’s healthy coping of with grief, and diminishes his character and character arc a lot, too.

I think Lan Jingyi is important. Specifically in what he represents: In the Cloud Recesses Study Arc we see how stolid the Lan Sect is, and with Lan Wangji's whipping we see how blinded the Lan Sect can be by its own ideals that it forsakes the morality those ideals represent.

When we see Lan Wangji in WWX'S second life we see the change Lan Wangji has initiated in his own clan.

That change is embodied in the one Lan Jingyi.

He's loud, brash, emotive, unfiltered and sometimes rude, all of which are anathema to the Lan Clan's sacred ideals of comportment and image. While Lan Jingyi does get punished for infractions it should be noted that he's never dissuaded from his own nature. There is no alienation of Lan Jingyi from his clan. Lan Jingyi is fully Lan, we don't ever see him excluded and we don't see his relationship to his clan in any interpretable as estranged.

What does that tell us?

It tells us that the Lan Sect is changing. If we went purely on the Lan Sect we see in years prior it would not be surprising to see a character such as Lan Jingyi continually disparaged for his anathemic nature, looked down upon and excluded for his differences and punished for his 'undesirable traits'.

We do not see Lan Jingyi's passion being trained or beaten out of him. Instead, we see that the Lan Sect, especially through Lan Wangji's teachings and reforms, are doing their best to model Morality and Righteousness.

The flourishing existence of Lan Jingyi is a testament to the emendation of Lan Sect values; true righteousness being valued over the appearance of it, benevolence in action instead of in name. Mercy. Grace.

Lan Jingyi is the product of Lan Wangji's reforms and trials.

We see Lan Wangji suffer for his innate passion, punished for it by the hands of his own sect. But we also know Lan Jingyi never will.

Lan Jingyi is a sign of growth.

We are all aware of the famous wall of rules at the Gusu Lan Sect, which Wei Wuxian has a hard time following.

Well, according to the MDZS novel, there were 3,000 rules when they were students, and 4,000 rules 13 years later after Wei Wuxian was resurrected.

I managed to compile 180 rules and divided them into categories.

okay, since I've finished the books, I've been watching bits and pieces of the show. among the many wild changes it includes, my favourite so far is definitely Nie Huaisang smuggling an entire ass bird into the Gusu lectures in his sleeve, what a legend

He had to see Wei Ying, to make sure he was okay. He hadn’t been allowed to see Wei Ying six years ago, and the man had nearly died. Would have died if Wen Qing hadn't randomly happened to be interviewing at Gusu hospital that same day. It was unacceptable that a sheer coincidence was the only reason Wei Ying was still alive. The company Lan Wangji’s family owned had put Wei Ying at risk, then abandoned him. Someone in his family’s company had made the decision to fire Wei Ying without notice, which violated company policy. Someone in his family’s company had further made the decision to pull medical support over a policy that was clearly not meant to be used in this way. Lan Wangji was going to find this ‘ someone .’ And when he did… Lan Wangji cut himself off at the shocking violent images that flickered through his normally peaceful mind. There was precedent for such punishments. Though much of his ancestor’s history had been burned, enough survived to make it clear that Lan discipline had always been harsh. In the modern context, he knew such measures would be viewed as archaic… even barbaric. But cultivators were given leeway by the authorities and society at large to handle their own business. Lan Wangji felt a primal sort of anger and thirst for vengeance that - for the first time in his life - made him fiercely glad that there would be no boundaries to stay his hand if he found the one responsible for Wei Ying’s treatment.

“You never told me that you and Hanguang-Jun had been romantically involved.” Wei Wuxian choked on his in-drawn breath, which sent him into a coughing fit that lasted almost a minute. “What?!” He wheezed, when he could finally form words again. “Why would you think… it was only… we weren’t romantically involved. Fuck, who says shit like that?” Wen Qing eyed him skeptically. “If you’re trying to play this off cool, you are failing spectacularly. Though that’s nothing new.”

He had, perhaps, not realized that there were so many reports he had written about Wei Ying. “I was the Compliance officer,” Lan Wangji replied tersely. “Mn,” Lan Xichen said, an unforgivable smirk appearing on his face. “You wrote him up for wearing too few layers on a night hunt after being covered in Yao viscera and changing into civilian attire?” Lan Wangji clenched his jaw. Wei Ying had been wearing only shorts and a tee-shirt. It had been a professional trip. It had been… distracting. “You know that most people don’t flirt by giving citations of minor rule violations to the person they are interested in, right?” Lan Xichen persisted, openly laughing at him, even if it was only with his eyes. “ Ge ,” Lan Wangji said repressively, which only served to amuse Lan Xichen more.

Summary: When the dust settles, when Jin Rulan is officially granted the title of leader of Lanling-Jin and Nie Huaisang has taken the mantle of Chief Cultivator, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji receive an urgent letter. Cutting their travels short, they head south-east from Shangqiu and arrive back in the Cloud Recesses of Gusu-Lan a month before a conference is to be held in the Unclean Realm. A conference to discuss the fate of one Jin Guangyao. - Or, the one after it all.

Kay's comments: This story takes a look on what could have happened if Jin Guangyao would have survived Guanyin Temple and I really like it a lot. Lan Xichen starts petitioning to other sect leaders that Jin Guangyao should be allowed to be imprisoned in the Cloud Recesses until the end of his life and the other sect leaders aren't very happy about it, because they want him dead. Lan Qiren calls back Lan Wangji from his honeymoon to help him deal with the fallout and learns to appreciate Wei Wuxian in the process. Really enjoyed it!

Excerpt: “I wish I knew,” Lan-xiansheng sighs, and he looks older than Wei Wuxian remembers. Worn and tired. “I worry for him; he has not taken the recent changes in the jianghu well. I fear that this might cause trouble for the sect, if he continues to stand by Jin Guangyao despite the proof of his actions that has arisen.” That Wei Wuxian has heard of—more small sect leaders coming forward about underhanded deals, payoffs to civilians. Hardly anything surprising; if Nie Huaisang had a hand in it, Wei Wuxian would also not be surprised. The new Chief Cultivator seemed quite disappointed by Jin Guangyao’s survival. Wei Wuxian can’t say he disagrees with that disappointment.

Headcanon Hell: MDZS #2

Hear me out, although I am probably mixing MDZS-verses (novel, drama, etc), in this case it does not matter so much. Headcanon for today is: no one should be surprised that WWX did not know the meaning of the Lan ribbon, his poor memory does not play a role here - rather, what is important is his working methodology. My bet is that WWX didn't rewrite as many Gus Lan texts as he should have as a punishment. The basis of WWX's character is to work smarter not harder (so he can do more). I've seen many times how the fandom says that WWX invented the copying talisman, but no one uses it to explain his low knowledge of Gusu Lan customs, which is perfect solution for it. Knowing the Lans their texts were written in difficult, serious language, if I were WWX I would rewrite them once, not focusing on content, just calligraphy - legibility, and later I would copy my version enough times and then wait the punishment off while doing other things to make it look like I did everything myself.

Don't tell me this isn't something WWX would do?

Especially noticing the scene at the end of his punishment (with the porn book), nowhere does it say that they checked how much he had written in a day (or at least I don't remember - they were keeping an eye but besides it?), even LWJ was surprised that he had already finished the rewrite and had time to tase and draw him - at that point LWJ's crush was unlikely to be so strong that he could overlook that. Additionally, to deflect the argument that WWX knew the sect's rules and could recite them from memory. He could because LXR recited them during class (probably more than once), and WWX seems to be the type of person who finds it easier to ignore writing than hearing words (as listening is more closely associated with experience). Though again, in the case of the rules themselves, it's likely he's seen them on the wall enough times to remember quite a bit along with the help of LXR's recitation.
