honestly the flip side of this is that i want the protagonists to have positive qualities that aren't just "well they're the main characters." if your villains are just worthless on every level, it doesn't matter what the protagonists are like - they're better, right? but if your antagonists also have some kind of strength of character, then your protagonists have to be more than just good-guycoded.

i keep reading things where the author decides that the best way to make it clear who the reader should be sympathizing with is to make the antagonists completely devoid of anything resembling a positive quality and more than anything it's just boring.
