Before meeting with Inosuke to investigate Zenitsu’s disappearance, Tanjiro is sent on an outside errand for the Tokito House where he happens upon a crying child. Without hesitation, he offers the abandoned child help, while his selfless actions catch the attention of UpperRank 6, Daki and Gyutaro (from within).

How They Look at You

Tanjirou looks at you like you are the night sky, wonder and admiration emanating from his eyes. He can hardly look away from your beauty, but it blinds him.

"You... Are the most beautiful person i have ever met, or will meet"

Rengoku looks you in the eye with adoration so strong it looks like his eyes are burning. He could look at you forever without blinking, without getting bored.

"Please, let me look at you a little longer"

Giyuu can hardly look you in the eye without getting shy. Each time your eyes meet, his face erupts in pink and the need to avert his eyes is undeniable. Still, he stares out of the corner of his eye, hoping you wont see him this time.

"I-I wasn't staring, don't look at me like that"

Inosuke doesnt try to hide his stares. He stands in front of you, forehead against your ownm eyes boring into your soul. It feels like hes watching your movements with how closely he stares. Its almost as unnerving as it is endearing.

"Zuitsu told me that staring into someone's eyes will make them fall in love with me! So keep looking!"

Akaza gazes at you with respect and reverence, as though you were a holy grail. He doesn't dare touch you, fearing that he may taint you. You are unattainable, and so he must watch from afar and yearn for you.

"Please dont come any closer, i can't trust myself to not ruin you"

Gyutaro feels unworthy to even look in your direction- you are so beautiful, so ethereal. Surely he does not deserve to be close enough to see you when he is so wretched. Yet, when you watch him, he feels as though he was chosen by some god. Surely he does not deserve your time, or to even see your heavenly form upon the same ground he walks. So against his longing body, he forces himself to recoil from your waiting form like how he shrinks away from the sun.

"Please don't look at me, i'm hideous. I'm sorry for taking up your space, i have made it unclean"

( summary ) you’re a demon slayer, but even you can’t help but notice the unique beauty of the blood thirsty demon in front of you.

CONTENT WARNINGS!

gn reader. mentions of blood. death. starvation.

you were on your back, clutching your head in pain. the blood was oozing out of the various wounds that had been inflicted across your pale body. your eyes were fluttering, the throbbing in your chest was making you weaker by the minute and soon you gave in to the desire to sleep.

it was an almost useless ability. you being able to see into creature’s pasts, human or not. though, most of the time it gave you leverage over most demons.

your feet scraped against the rocky ground, searching for the demon’s past self. the sound of gasping women caught your attention as you turned the corner. the small rocks fell from their hands as a boy faced them, smiling wide. his teeth were rotting, a sign that starvation controlled his body.

he was short, his cheeks and torso sunken in. his hair was matted and dandruff riddled. extravagant beauty was something that did not grace him.

the women turned, with their hands covering their mouths and noses, and ran away from the boy. you saw nothing terrifying or disgusting about him. so why did they run? he was just a human trying to survive the harshness of the world.

it was cruel how many people turned their noses up at the sight of him. it saddened you to your core. humans had always been the worst creatures in your opinion. always the ones to start wars and destroy the planet. though you took a vow to protect human life, it didn’t make you worship the ground they walked on.

you continued following him through his life, watching him and his sister grow. it seemed that his sister had given him a reason to endure the cruelty around him, gave him a reason to survive. but his reason was ripped away from him. you understood him.

it was beautifully sad.

your eyes opened, seeing the demon standing above you with a grin adorning his features. you could smell the blood lust dripping off of him. fear struck you suddenly as his face inched closer to yours.

“your friends will not defeat me,” he croaked, his hand clawed at his throat. it was almost scary, the way his stomach dipped in, his hip bones extremely prominent.

“and neither will you!” a scratchy laugh escaped from the back of his throat. he seemed excited to be able to take your life, most demons did. it was nothing new to you. you just stared at him.

as you looked closer, the similarities between him and his human self were astounding. he was still such a beautiful creature. that wouldn’t change for you. the things he had endured during his childhood would seem to make any reasonable person insane.

you’ve never been scared of dying, the thought of finally being with your family comforted you instead. you knew your end was coming and you shed no ounce of fear.

“you’re beautiful ya’know,” the words spilled from your mouth before you could even think.

“in my next life, i pray to the heavens that i will be gifted with even half of your strength!”

it was sad, the way he looked at you as though no one has ever uttered kind words to him. his devilish grin turned into a sad smile as he fell to his knees beside you. the blood sickles he once held, dropped beside him.

he began to cry.

ironic, isn’t it? the demon that was once so willing to kill you without mercy, was now kneeling beside you, crying his heart out. the pain that he felt was such a pungent scent. his years of existing were nothing sweet, and you felt it too. it was such a painful feeling.

you could tell your wounds were fatal, but at the moment all you could do was focus on him.

the way his body shook as he sobbed was an incredibly depressing sight to be witnessing. it caused your heart to overwhelmingly ache. you reached your hand out, softly cupping his jaw.

“you are beautiful gyutaro,” a sigh left your lips as your injuries continued to weaken you. the gash on your chest stung badly and your broken ankle wasn’t any better.

the demon in front of you didn’t seem as put together as he once had. the emotions of his past leaked from his pores and it made tears slip from your own eyes too.

you heard tanjiro yelling out your name as he rose from the ground, noticing the demon so close to you.

you were not alarmed.

“i will not survive my injuries, please have mercy on me and make the pain stop. i beg of you!” your voice was extremely weak. it was almost pitiful.

he bowed his head, showing that he respected you and your wishes. his hands reached for his sickles once more, and as he rose his arms above his head, a single sentence slipped from him.

“you’re beautiful too,”

I've been thinking about kny and I think my favorite thing about it is the fact that all of the demons that turned human (before and after death) have done so because of love.

Rui is the first demon we see turn human because of love. It was after death, but he turned human because of his parents' love for him, and vice versa.

Next is Ume and gyutaro. Ume turns first, so I'll talk about her first.

Ume turned human after death because of her love for Gyutaro. If she didn't love her brother the way she did, she most likely wouldn't be human.

Gyutaro was next. He turned human after death, too. He turned because of his love for Ume. She reminded him that they promised to stick together through everything, and because he loved her, he decided to keep the promise and let Ume join him in hell. He also turned human then. Again, not possible without love.

Nothing like that happens for a while after, so beware of manga spoilers below the cut.

The next demon to turn is Akaza, yet again because of love. This time though, it wasn't familial. He turned because of love from several people, but mainly his fiancee. She showed up first, and she provoked the memories, for lack of better phrasing.

Koyuki begs Akaza to stop and just move on so they can be together again. Akaza's dad tells him that he's okay and that he doesn't need to fight anymore. Keizo tells him that he's okay, as well, and that he'll never stop loving him. Then, Muzan steps in.

Muzan tells him to keep getting stronger, and again, Akaza almost continues-- but then, Koyuki steps in. She tells him that it's okay and that he doesn't need to fight anymore. And that's when he fully turns human-- before that, he was, technically, but when Muzan showed up, he became a demon again.

He apologized so much to Koyuki for things out of his control, but Koyuki told him that she was just glad to be able to be with her husband once more.

And then, Akaza completely disintegrates. He's dead now. We see Koyuki join him in hell.

Anyways if you couldn't tell I love hakukoyu--

On to Nezuko. She's the next. She turns because of both a medicine from Shinobu and Tamayo, and because of love from others. She recalls Tanjiro inviting her home, and she turns fully at that point.

Tanjiro is the last. When he's a demon, none of the slayers present can bring themselves to behead him. They all love him too much. And so they force him into the sunlight, but of course that doesn't work-- he can be in the sun. Nezuko-- now human-- joins the fight. She runs up to Tanjiro and he bites her shoulder, but she doesn't let go of him. He also doesn't kill her, in fact doesn't even intentionally harm her beyond the bite.

He tries an attack, and Nezuko puts her hand in front of it, but the attack misses. He's fighting back against Muzan, of course. Kanao rejoins the fight, and she has a cure. She stabs Tanjiro with it and tells him to stop.

In Tanjiro's mind, he's trying to get back to Nezuko and the others. He is being helped from behind by the ghosts of his dead family, and in the front, he reaches the arms of all of his living friends and, of course, Nezuko. She's the first one he reaches, too.

If it weren't for everyone's love for him, he wouldn't have become human again.

He was deathly quiet for a good minute before his hands rushed to find your own

It was almost as if he was the sun, beaming and warm

"Ooh, you're so nice!"

He just about knocked you back when he threw his arms around you

A gentle smile tugged at his lips, his reply falling hot against your skin

"I feel the same.."

Despite the flushing of his cheeks, his eyes remained on your face and his hands found home within yours

"And, um...I might know a few dance moves?"

"Huh?"

His head tilted sharply at your words before he rushed to stand

"Whaddya mean drown in me!? Do you wanna fight or somethin'!?"

"No, you idiot! I just meant that I love you!"

As if he wasn't just jumping about, his body comes to a complete halt

Wait, is he...

HE'S NOT BREATHING-

"...don't lie."

"I never do when it comes to you."

Though he had originally glared at you, his gaze was now regretful and turned to the daisies that adorn the grass you both had sat upon

"I adore you, 'taro."

He remained quiet, allowing a stiff silence to fall over you both

And it was only when you glanced back to the district that he finally spoke; mumbled

"...sorry."

"It's okay."

He didn't say 'I love you', but he did hold you

   ➢ Mitsuri

She let out a squeal the moment you finished speaking

"You're so sweet, (Y/n)! Ooh, I can't breathe-"

A giggle falls from your lips as she curls up and fans herself, gaze loving

"You can't just say that so casually- especially when we're laid together-"

"If it makes you this flustered, I might just do it again..!"

A dramatic 'nooo' pushes itself from behind her hands, having slapped them to her face

"Love youu~"

"...ove yuh toh!"

"That'll be hard with the three of us."

"Wouldn't stop me, though!" Suma piped in quickly, draping herself over your shoulders in a hug

"It wouldn't stop any of us." Like a calm melody, Hinatsuru spoke and smiled behind her hand to hide her laugh

Makio slapped Tengen on the arm, "If we can share a bed together, we can dance together too."

You watched as they all grinned at each other, smiling to yourself

"Alright, alright! We can give dancing a go."

The three cheered and you couldn't help but add in a little 'woo!' of your own

And only the neighboring trees bared witness to your groups fumbling when you all finally stood

A whine tickled your throat as you scrunched your face

With a pinch to your nose, she drew close..

Your eye shot open, looking down at the girl that was pinned down to the ground with your Nichirin blade. You knew you wouldn't have done this on purpose so you thought she was gonna attack you. Or something, then you see a little girl hitting Tanjiro on the head then sees Kyojuro choking this girl like how you had the reflexes... You walked over to Kyojuro, holding the girl by the neck, then looking at the ground to see a weapon, you walked over, lifting your blade up from holding the girl, you bent down, knowing the attack she attempted to succeed in doing which failed since you were the second highest rank in the demon slayer corps, and also trained by one of the first girl Hashiras, Mitsuri Kanroji, and didn't want to put her training to no use, bending over the girl, standing up and pinning her to the ground after avoiding her attack, smiling at her like you didn't do or almost get attacked, in that one chilling tone, you looked at her with a smile no one would have thought would scare someone so much that they would shit themselves. "My my!~ You are a tough one! I'm impressed you are working with a demon!~ Let alone you are a human! I would have never thought I would see the day! But here you are! Underneath my blade, you know? If you were a demon, I could decapitate you right. Now..." "But since you aren't and I'm not allowed to do that since you are a human and we aren't allowed to hurt humans, I shan't... But... If you tell me about the demon, I will let you walk freely, unless you want to end up like..." You move the girls head around forcefully to the girl that was currently getting strangled by Kyojuro, while moving her head you almost make it fall off. "Her..." "But... It's your choice of course!" "So, what shall it be?" You let go of her chin forcefully, not liking that she betrayed humans and is working with a demon... "I- I will tell you! J- just don't hurt me!" "Okay, I won't! But it's weird how you choose a demon over humans!-" "I'm gonna tell you now, okay!?" The girl tears up, feeling the impact of her neck being turned around so forcefully taking action. "Go on then...~ Explain!~" You look at her, not knowing about this side of you, you were thinking about what could have made her want to do this. "The demon is lower moon one! H-he can control dreams, he wants us to collect the spiritual core! He promised us a pleasant dream if we... Destroy them! J- just please don't hurt me!" The girl begs on the ground. "Hmmm... - Hah! I wasn't gonna hurt you at the start anyways! Not like someone called Kyojuro... But!- Have a nice life! Tata!" You turn around, running away, then climbing onto the roof since that would be the most understandable place for the demon to be at.

"Ah~ (Name)-chan; what a lovely surprise!-" "Shut it, I don't care about anything but the fact you bribed them to help you by giving them a 'Pleasant dream' which I would call... Black mailing...~ Huh?" You smile at lower moon one. "Wow! I shouldn't underestimate your skills at figuring out stuff, huh? (Name)-chan! Become a demon, and you will be able to be smarter, stronger-" "No thanks! I'd rather die by a demon then actually become the demon that kills and ruins joy and hope for others, it's just wrong for people to ignore others feelings! I'm sorry but I could never stop or ruin that for others like they did to me!" You look at him with more hatred then you have towards the other demons you killed. "Wow! You are a human that never wants to give up their humanity huh? Impressive! I would never have thought that of you! But... Shall we dance our way to victory?... (Name)-chan?" You get shivers down your spine after he said that, you never felt that way before... It was freaking you out that a low ranking demon made you shiver on the spot, but you quickly got into the position you would usually start a fight in. "... Gladly~" "Then let's start!" You were the first one to make a move, leaping towards him, moving your blade to the right angle, to decapitate him. "Sakura breathing: .... Fourth form: .... Sakura pit: .... (Last name)'s charm!" You moved around him quickly, but not quick enough, making slashes go forward, to his position, but he avoided them with such grace, which almost made you actually want to become a demon if he was that graceful... But you snapped out of it, with rage you almost, let out another attack until Tanjiro came out of the trains carriage. "(Name)-san! I'm so glad you are oka- !!! LOWER MOON ONE?!" Tanjiro looked at the anger- Well, the dead smile on your face, just like Shinobu's, but you smelt more angry, angrier then he ever smelt anyone before! It was impressive how you hide it that much, but there was no time for that, he had to help. "Water breathing: Fourth Form: Striking Tide!" Tanjiro performs a multitude of slashes in a flowing fashion to release multiple consecutive slashes. Unfortunately you and Tanjiro definitely underestimated him. "Tanjiro-kun, do you know if Kyojuro-kun is awake? He could be some help" You look at him, still making random slashes at the demon, not focusing on one thing, but two at the same time. "And what about the others?-" You get cut off by lower moon one, putting you to sleep, thankfully you knew how to wake up, by killing yourself, you did so, even in the bathroom you swore you'd never go in again... "Rengoku-san is still asleep-... And the others too-" Tanjiro looks into the distance, then remembering.. "What was your 'dream' ?" (Name) never replied, which made Tanjiro worry, the fact that she was never the person to ignore anyone worries him a lot, but... It wasn't his fault... It was THEIR fault.. "This really isn't the time Tanjiro-kun!" (Name) took a deep breath and lunged towards Lower Moon One in such speed, he kept trying to make her fall asleep but she kept killing herself, it was painful but she kept getting used to it. "SAKURA BREATHING: SEVENTH FORM: BROKEN PETALS!" (Name) made multi-slashes rise towards the lower moon one, at different sides, successfully cutting his head off, but...- Not like any other demon, he was still alive, not turning into ashes, but... He combined himself with the train, (Name) looked at him in utter fear, not knowing what the hell he was doing. "Ah...~ (Name)-chan~ The world isn't... heh... That easy!~ Not like... Saving and trying to see your beloved but dead family again!~" You'd look at him with so much hatred, you couldn't hide the anger you held, you let it all out, revealing it on your once unchanging face, now ager written all over it, now even an inch was shown with the love and happiness on your face, it was all the anger you could hold without, hopefully, going absolutely crazy, out of your mind actually!

Tanjiro looked at you, then starting to attack the worm thingy again, after you run back inside the train, to see a girl fighting the other skinned worm things, but this time, they had no heads, you suspected it was parts of his body, you quickly ran over and started slashing at them, the girl looked at you in pure shock and admiration, she never met you before, but she could just recognize your voice from the way you look, you were the girl that met her friends and Onii-chan, she wanted to help because she could see your arms getting weaker and weaker by every hit, she signaled to you to go and do what you were going to do from the start, you noticed it was the cabin Kyojuro, Inosuke and Zenitsu were supposed to be in, but they weren't, you soon figured out they have woken up too and are probably fighting different parts of the train right now, you nodded and went back to your main goal: Finding the main body. You quickly found Inosuke, but he said he was going to help Tanjiro make it weaker so it would be a little easier for you since he called you 'weak' which you weren't, but you knew that's the way he was, so you carried on your way, until you see Zenitsu, asleep, and fighting another part of Lower moon ones body that was the train, you just knew he would be quick because he was a thunder user, so you just thought he would go all around the train making sure the people didn't get eaten since that was the demons main goal. You kept on going until you bumped into Kyojuro, he was fighting another part, so since he was one of the mature ones, you started to explain, he nodded then let you continue what you were doing at the start, he wished you good luck and hoped you'd find it quickly, encouraging you like: "If you kill him, that means you will become a Hashira since you would have killed a member of the twelve kizuki!" or "It's very brave of you to fight alongside a Hashira, not many people get that chance, but if you find the main body you will become a Hashira and make that chance even stronger then before!" You felt really better by him saying all of that, so you continued on your way, until you heard thunder coming from the other carriages, you supposed it was Zenitsu going around them and helping the girl. Looking back at it now, you were glad you stopped, since you found something that looked very promising, you looked around and then you found something that might be a clue!... Or the actual thing...

You didn't want that, you went around seeing if the people were okay, the impact made them all wake up, you sadly broke a finger, but that wasn't enough to stop you from doing your job. Once you met up with them all again, you sensed a strong presence come from the forest, you became very stiff from it, Tanjiro smelt it aswell since he was the one that could smell almost everything, then... A... Demon... Came out... You knew he was definitely stronger then the Lower moon one, that's for sure, but... He kept looking at you, like he was reading you... Like a book... You were very uncomfortable... Until, you read his eyes... Kanji written in them... "Upper moon three!..." You look at him in fear as you say what is written in his eyes. You quickly take out your Nichirin blade, holding it in the stronger position, you were taught a lot of positions to be in, like: The flexibility one, or the speedy one, the list could go on and on! He could see the faint flushed look on your face, which made him even more angry, but gave him the more point to kill him... "Huh? Who may you be? And why are you blocking the view of my Darling?..." Kyojuro's aura becoming less innocent and becoming more angry, and-... Well... A menacing aura...

You were just a kid yourself, you were poor, just like him. Did your mum have the decency to feed you…? Yeah, she did. Everything she did; she did it for you. Even if she fell prone to drinking and would end up hitting you. But… at least she didn’t sell you to be a courtesan. She says she’d miss you too much.

Thats besides the point. You were eating rice as you walked along the red light district, or rather the slumps where all the people who were poor lived..

Carefully, but hungrily chewing on your rice. Your mom hadn’t been able to afford food for a while, at least not food for you. She got too happy with the money she made and spent it on a new kimono for herself and a gem or two. you were just happy to be eating honestly, and your mom promised to get you a new kimono too, so what’s the harm?

As you continued to walk by, you saw kids eating leftovers, and playing with leaves they tied together into dolls.

You smiled and waved at the kids you knew, promising to play with them the next day— and then you stumbled upon him. You didn’t know his name, but most people knew him. The smelly, rotten, diseased and cursed child. You tried to approach him once before, but then he pushed you away and yelled, said he didn’t like your teasing.

But… you still felt bad for him. He was just a kid like you; you were fortunate to have your mom feed you… and according to rumors his mom didn’t.

With a huff, you sat down next to him, handing him some of your rice… okay let’s be honest… most of your rice.

at first, he thought you were teasing him, hiding him face, and muttering at you to go away.

“What? No, I want to feed you, eat the rice.” You say in response, sitting on your knees and moving his hand away from his face, and inching the rice closer to him.

He looked so confused… and scared, in all honesty. Like a cat, but eventually he took the rice, eating it. You ate it with him, and then he asked for your name.

“Y/N, my name is Y/N.” You smile at him, and you see him stumble over his next words, surprised that you gave him your first name, rather than your last name. “My name is Gyutaro.” Gyutaro says. “Why did you help me?” He asks, rice stuck to his teeth and between his teeth. “Why shouldn’t I? We all live in the slumps, we have to help each other out!” You reply, happily. “I like the black on your face,” you say, innocently not knowing the effect it would end up having on him. “I dunno why, but they look nice.” You smile - he doesn’t respond. Though you see a blush climbing up on his face.

years later, and you’ve slowly made it a habit to share your food with Gyutaro, at least until your mom made more money and you moved to a nicer area in the Red Light District.

Gyutaro promised himself to find you, promised himself to take you. He didn’t know why, but for you to be the only person to be nice to him— other than what would later become his sister. He would have to take you. He felt the need to protect you, and one day when he was at work (debt collecting) he saw a person flirt with you…

“Gyutaro?” You called out, with a small smile that would soon grow to cover your whole face. Fuck you were lucky. So fucking lucky that your mom loved you, made money, bought you nice things… you looked so clean. Clear face and skin, your hair, fuck. He wanted to take again… but it was you. So he would be sweet and nice to you, like how he was with Ume.

“Yes?” He replied back, croaky voice sending shivers through his spine, his, not yours. He wonders if he was handsome you’d date him…?

“you look nice, I heard your sister started working as a courtesan, I walked into her the other day… we didn’t talk but she was really pretty.” You smile completely now, looking at him. “I bet she’s a good girl.”

But you’ll learn to forgive him when he takes you, you were so sweet and nice to him the first time, didn’t care that he was ugly, didn’t care that he was diseased. And now he’s even more disfigured, you don’t look at him with disgust, only fear. He loves it. please say you’ll forgive him— it’s been so long, and Daki keeps complaining about you.
