Hacks Episode 4.10 Thoughts

Alright, so I’m mostly keeping this to the episode-specific post, rather than taking up the entire season bc I want to be able to watch the season start to finish to really think about it as a cohesive whole.

I’ll start out by just saying point blank: I liked episode 10, and I liked it as the finale for this specific season. I went in knowing that reviewers and the show runners had described it as an epilogue to the climactic moment of episode 9, so perhaps I came into it with more apt expectations, but I appreciated JPL’s capacity to break their own season-arc formula, as the typical big twist/betrayal/hurt at the close would have felt like a contrivance and a repetition (without meaningful difference, pace Derrida!).

I’ve seen a lot of folks who wanted this to be the premier of season 5, but I personally would have hated this as a premier for a few reasons. For me, the hugeness of Deborah’s choice in 4.09 and the growth it represents requires an emotional aftermath, especially given the consequences that exceed what she had anticipated (which were themselves already huge even before learning about the 18 months left in the non-compete, which she and Jimmy should have known about but anyway). As an epilogue-style finale, the elision of 8 months of time that culminates in a gasping awakening from the stupor Deborah had descended into in Singapore works well. As a premier, it wouldn’t have, and I especially think it would not have landed well among the fandom (even worse than this ep did). For one, there would have been enough distance from the on-air quitting to have Deborah’s depression and her bouts of harshness toward Ava feel like emotional whiplash when many viewers would likely have used the between-season break to come to terms with this “new” Deborah and lose sight of who she has long been (more on that, too, later). It may thereby have landed as a kind of betrayal in a much more intense way. But at least for myself (and I’m someone who saw this kind of partial regression as the necessary fallout of Deborah’s growth), to have this fallout neatly contained into a single episode arc when you have an entire season sprawling out in front of you would feel like a betrayal of the weight it carries. With just one episode left and following exactly on the heels of ep. 9, though, the montages work as narratively efficacious devices to unsettle the grandeur of sacrifice (sacrifice doesn’t just hurt in the moment; it fucking aches in the aftermath). And now, with the ending as it is, we’re set up to start off season 5 in a really different tonal register without having to do a massive jump between episodes 1 and the rest of the season, which makes for a more cohesive arc.

Now onto Deborah… I’ve said it in several of my reviews, but I appreciate that JPL largely do justice (with Ava as well) to the idea that growth isn’t linear. Deborah upended everything at the end of episode 9 for Ava and creative autonomy in a moment of intense moral clarity after a lifetime spent more-than-willingly languishing in the morally gray, in the world of artistry measured by success over authenticity, in the notion of feminism defined by the success of individual women, etc. I think this episode did a beautiful job of encapsulating the idea of growth that comes in painful fits and starts, and the montages worked well to illustrate it. We open with the frustration of a series of increasingly desperate attempts at finding a loophole—attempts that lead Deborah all the way to sleazy billboard lawyers—and of course that frustration gives way to the self-isolation of a wounded animal retreating to lick her gashes in peace. She’s self-destructive because what self is there worth living for? She eats like shit because she’s no longer hyper-visible on stage and camera every night. She languishes in bed because there’s nothing to wake up for. She drinks Coke from a bottle because she doesn’t find herself worthy of the pleasures of having things perfectly to her liking anymore. And we see it age her rapidly, down to the weak little cough as she walks around a cheap tourist store. Then suddenly, a loophole materializes. It’s not growth, no, but it’s familiar, and god, there’s something to the comforts of the well-known after the whirlwind of upending absolutely everything again and again and again (from losing her residency to doing the new hour to life on the road to late night to throwing it all out again). But those old comforts provide merely the simulacra of pleasure now. They feel good enough, but ultimately ring hollow. They satiate without satisfying. And so Deborah spirals outward, seizing on everything that could possibly fill that void. Drinking. Gambling. Touristy shit. And for a little bit, the euphoria of finally being back on stage, supplemented with the rosy-hued tint of the honeymoon/vacation, is enough. But eventually…it’s not. Especially as Ava grows less and less enamored with this life, finally culminating in the boat confrontation scene.

And now here’s the thing. Deborah does lash out, trying to send Ava away with excuses that are only half factual. (Again, wounded animal, etc. etc. of course she does.) But it’s fucking huge that she doesn’t throw it back into Ava’s face that Ava is the reason for all of this. Think about the fight at the end of season 1. Where we are now is growth, even if it doesn’t feel like it compared to episodes 6 and 9. It’s subtle, but it’s there. Because Deborah has almost never hesitated to go for the jugular, but here, it doesn’t even seem to be on the tip of her tongue. She could destroy Ava, but she doesn’t. She doesn’t even hover on the precipice. Instead, she throws things out that sound vaguely like insults, but are just another way of giving Ava an out—a pathway toward becoming something, anything, other than Deborah when “being Deborah” feels miserable as hell.

I’m really curious and cautiously optimistic about season 5 now that they’ve set up a shift toward external tension as the narrative and emotional driver, rather than the internal tension between Ava and Deborah (not that I think things will be smooth sailing, but that there’s no massive betrayal haunting the background of their reunion in the way it has in past seasons). Deborah on the offensive has always been Deborah at her fiercest, and I’m excited to see the ways it may bring her back into the orbit of characters like Marcus (who seems poised to make a massive career pivot of his own, and I really, really hope JPL bring him back into the main fold and narrative focus) as Ava faces a future that’s far less scripted than the path she’s followed with Deborah until now.

I have a lot of smaller notes, but I kind of want to keep this as is for now. I might reblog this post later with a few of those small notes later when I have a chance to give the episode a second watch with a bit of distance.

after watching the finale now, i feel like i was right: season 4 of hacks should’ve ended with 4.09.

4.10 felt like i was watching the s5 pilot and it hurt the impact of 4.09 in my opinion

All things considered, I think that 4.09 would have been a better finale for season 4. Way more emotionally resonant.

This one was redundant filler for the most part only for that unexpected twist to happen and make Deborah snap out of it, but it felt more like a 5.01 rather than a 4.10 if that makes sense?

It very much reminded me of "The Handmaid's Tale" 6.10: following the high drama of the previous episode, the finale offered a subdued and reflective exploration of its characters' journeys.

Back to "Hacks": the introspective tone would have hit more had the episode been less uneven.

man, I know that Guillermo really wants to be taken seriously and all, but I can’t help but feel like his actions at the end of 4.10 feel kind of a lot like someone hacking off all their hair after a bad breakup.

like Guillermo says “nothing is ever going to change -- unless I change it” but all I hear is NEW HAIR SIRE, NEW ME.

Magnum PI 4.09 - Better Watch Out review

So where to begin with this! I mean while a good chunk of this episode was Magnum and Lia running about, BUT we got so many small Miggy moments and stuff I don’t even mind! 

(In fact Magnum/Lia relationship in this felt more like it was there to give us Miggy moments more than anything. Which is kind of what it is about so yeah... makes sense.)

We also got so much soft Higgy. From her being all ”this was the best way I could think of '' about the Santa/Elf gig (can we talk about character growth? I mean season 1 Higgy would rather get shot before putting an elf costume on!)

(Though Higgy does looks like she be ready to murder someone wishing her a merry Christmas here!)

being there to tease, support Magnum in his relationship and for saying  ‘she don’t know what she’s missing’ there at the end. And staying when the crisis is over just because she’d rather be there to support him. All the good stuff.

It was nice that we didn’t get an actual hostage crisis at the precinct like the summary said, but a digital one. This made it make sense for Higgy to be left at HPD trying to hack and stuff while Magnum and Lia did the physical detective part. Good reason to put her on the side-line rather than having something stupid like they’ve done before, so Magnum and Lia working together could happen. 

I would have, despite not really caring about Lia/Magnum, to have seen some more of the feels going on there. Because when Magnum confines about being upset Lia lied to Higgins, it’s almost surprising. (Loved their talk here and someone remembering - if vaguely - to reference Hannah.)

I mean sure, he is clearly upset but at the same time… not really feeling it. But because she’s more of a “in the background obstacle” to Miggy than anything else, we don’t want or get to see much of their ‘normal dynamic’. So IDK. Maybe having her be like “yeah, I’d love to come to O’hana X-mas” at the start and then at the end realizing he’s hurt and going “Actually I have paperwork.” 

Small question about Lia’s dad and Magnum and Higgins’ previous dealings with them - didn’t Higgy push a company assassin out of a window 20 floors up in s. 1 or 2 and he got smashed like a pancake? Or maybe that was some other organization? It’s not gonna happen but it would be excellent fun if Lia’s dad had Magnum followed, one of the followers recolonized Higgy as the person who killed said hit man (who was actually a close friend of Lia’s dad) years ago and we got a big dramatic mess when they tried to get revenge on Juliet... (fic idea ding-ding-ding.)

As for Caleb and the car plot as well as the bail skipper small time crock with a heart of gold was nice. 

(I’m really happy that even crocks get to be nice and love their families sometimes. It’s very X-mas appropriate.)

At first I wasn’t sure what was going on with Caleb and wanted him to be more embracing and happy about being part of the O’hana, but when he talked to Rick I kind of felt like it worked. He had a life and family and traditions and while he’s happy it’s different and he’s still not quite feeling like he’s part of the O’hana fully. But him being thankful and doing the little speech at the end was nice. At the same time, I kind of like him better when he’s angry or upset for some reason.

I so enjoy the fact that we’re getting Higgy being just as supportive of Magnum’s relationship as he was with her and Ethan. I do hope we get more progress during the remaining half of the season on the Miggy feels though, because we have already done this story-line in a way with it taking forever for Magnum to even be a ‘currently nothing more than friends’ so yeah. Need something else to happen. (But by the sound of 4.10 it does already sound like the writing team knows as much.)

Also wonder if this is what is going to be the begging of the end for the Magnum/Lia thing, or just a bump in the road? Could we get a “Higgy has sexy dream but Magnum and Lia are now closer than ever so…angst?” sort of thing next time. 

I honestly would either like some actual feels between Lia/Magnum or for them to amicably break up and she just be Gordon’s partner. I really like her and Gordon’s dynamic and it’s good to have another female character around!

Loved Thomas giving Kumu a little hugg-y cheek kiss. They so adorable!

Higgy making (in)famous Christmas pudding! I mean, licorice and basil? (Actually it doesn't sound too bad, but I am a Swede and thus a licorice fiend… though still not sure about it in pudding form.)

The ‘doesn’t she know what she’s missing’ moment of course even if it was meant to also imply the whole O’hana hang, it felt more like Higgy pointing out how awesome Thomas is. Which we love. Them heading out together… just feels right.

Same with the bringing her a change of clothes.

Them just being adorable and him teasing her about it but having done it. And I just want to point out… this is the top he picked for her…

(Or maybe she had some clothes picked out for him to stick in a bag but still I like my Magnum gives himself a christmas gift - Higgy-cleavage - idea better.)

Overall, I enjoyed the episode a lot. I loved the fact that this is their yearly tradition, imply they’ve been doing this every year even though we haven’t gotten to see it. Extra points for the fact that Higgy makes weird English Christmas pudding they all eat even though they don’t like it. It’s very nice and makes my Christmas-heart feel happy and full.

So yeah, this ep was a winner!

what do you think are some of the biggest pieces of evidence for cas being ace? i've watched so much of the show in the past month that it all blurs together, lol, so i can't remember many specific scenes. i do remember "i'm utterly indifferent to sexual orientation" (though that wasn't about his own orientation) and cas' discomfort at idea of sleeping with women at the bordello in 5.03... anything else you can think of? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts!

wait actually first i wanna say that the biggest reason is because i’m asexual and i said so 0:) like i know that sounds a joke and it is a little bit but SERIOUSLY it’s just a general Aura or what the fuck ever about people. you know how sometimes a friend group formed in teenage years will one by one realize they’re all queers and they just grouped together organically? ace people are like that too. many of my closest friends have been aspec and i didnt even know that when i met them, THEY didn’t even know. but like if you asked me to list the ten people i was closest to over my life the huge majority would be aspec like me. we find each other In The Wild. so when i say he’s ace because i said so like i’m saying I’m Ace And I Can See Him. He Is Ace Because I Said So. my ace-dar is EXCELLENT

okay anyway with that out of the way here’s your actual list. obviously much of this can be a point in favor of many different readings of cas (and i’m not saying those can’t be true at the same time as ace cas!), but i’m ace and he’s ace and that’s what this post is about so i’m focusing on the ace parts. thank you.

list of ace cas evidence:

in general cas has a lot of trouble connecting with humanity at first which is an ENORMOUS ace mood

when dean cracks in the 4.01 deleted scene “yeah i have that problem with women” (after cas talks about the difficult in finding a vessel that can contain him) cas absolutely does not get that joke. we were having ace cas moments right from the get-go

it’s shown as early as 4.02 that cas doesn’t understand personal space. this is him not getting one single thing about human intimacy works and that he’s overstepping a boundary. it’s not just that he’s an angel (though that’s some of it) he just doesn’t intuitively understand physical stuff like that

that dean/anna kiss in 4.10. LOOK AT HIS FACE. that’s a face that says “i had no idea this is how humans were intimate with each other” and also “do i want to try that?” answer: maybe. dean’s very pretty. but something about it just feels like he’s going “whoa i never even CONSIDERED that” - like that to be sexy with the humans he’s into just didn’t occur to him

i know you said so already but WOW 5.03 brothel scene. THEEE ace cas moment

i’d also like to take a moment to tip my hat to 5.04. almost every aspec will have had a period of frustration and self-loathing where they thought at least once about maybe just having sex they weren’t into as a way to be “fixed” or to prove something. when aspecs are at their lowest and most broken, they are having sex they do not want to have. and when cas is at his lowest and most broken (in 5.04 AND 9.03, thank you), what is he doing? having sex! it’s just Interesting to me that the only times cas fucks is when he’s literally in the absolute worst points in his entire life 

also, i’m getting out of order here, but that thing in 9.03 was absolutely rape. the way he talked about it after was THEEE most comphet bullshit i’ve ever seen. “that was nice.” “she was...sooo hot.” dean winchester can’t fool me and neither can cas thee tiel. 

i know everyone was uncomfortable with the cherub in 5.14 but cas was SUPER uncomfortable. “no one likes it” yeah that’s cause he’s not a big touchy-feely dude 

i actually really hate that porn scene in 6.10, but it is a classic “i don’t get it” moment + a side of “monkey see monkey do” later when he decides to mimic it and kiss meg. she started it - he’s just going “oh yeah i remember watching that on TV - like this, right?” he’s pleased with himself for correctly mastering a form of human interaction, he’s not, like, horny. 

didn’t get the erectile dysfunction joke in 6.19

obviously, godstiel’s utter indifference to sexual orientation

strongly implied to be in a chaste marriage with his “wife” daphne when he was an amesniac

being repeatedly lobotomized in season 8 is its own can of worms. they were trying to make him straight. alas, it cannot be done

meg propositions him in season 8 and it takes him a bit to catch on. i don’t think accepting means he’s not ace, just that he’s interested in stuff humans do. would have been nice for his first time not to be with a psycho reaper who got him to trade his virginity for a pb&j :/

cas seemed REALLY nervous at the prospect of the date in 9.06, almost like it was something he had to steel himself to do - yet another weird part of human life he was resigning himself to, especially after metatron told him “go find a wife and have some babies” when his grace was taken

cas in season 10 is UTTERLY oblivious to hannah’s advances, even the ones that include nudity (and his own nudity at one point lol), and when he finally catches on he lets her down in the most awkward way possible

in season 11 he says he’s gonna take dean’s temperature and doesn’t see how that’s weird lol

he never got to truly speak to dean about his weird “””attraction””” to amara but i like to think he would have been equally confused

in season 12 in the hotel room where an orgy had clearly just taken place dean snickers and picks up the panties but cas is totally oblivious

ALSO completely oblivious when the waitress hits on him in season 12

this is a little bit of a stretch, but despite being named as jack’s “real” father, his relationship with kelly, his ostensible baby mama by proxy, seemed INCREDIBLY platonic to me. like they were such good buds! but he never had any of that romantic chemistry with her - there were no lingering notes or touches or whatever. he just wasn’t interested in that same way. 

exasperated with gabriel and talking about porn stars in season 13 lol

canonically, castiel spent seasons 4-?? falling in love with dean, but he never made a move on him physically - yeah yeah the CW is homophobic but i like to think that most of castiel’s Urges where dean is involved are not in fact of a sexual nature. he wants to be close to him and important to him more than he wants to fuck him. you can long for someone in the ace way without longing for them sexually yk

this is part of why i actually really liked the 15.18 confession - the happiness was in the being, or whatever. he was already WITH dean in almost every way that mattered (i wrote a fic about this). they shared secrets, they shared burdens, they lived together, they fought and worked together, they even raised a fucking kid together! cas was convinced he couldn’t have more than that but also he didn’t really NEED much more than that and thinking about how he had been with dean all along was what made him happy enough to literally die. yeah there’s a version of that scene where the reciprocation was enough to do it but they accidentally hacked it into an ace love scene so i will TAKE it

this concludes my list! i bet it’s a lot longer than u were expecting

What bugs me most about this is it comes across that EK is flat out lying about the memo/email. At no point do any of the emails paint the situation with a broad, multi-national brush. It VERY specifically states just the countries of Taiwan and China. If this was really a uniform update, then no countries would be singled-out.

So now they’ve essentially looked like assholes for making the lame requirement in the first place. Then they looked like assholes that don’t know how to properly communicate with their employees and had to retract a previous statement. And now they look like lying assholes that STILL don’t know how to communicate at all, either with their employees or the public. The communications team needs some new leadership and/or expertise. Well… a corporate exit has been laid. Sure, Taiwan flag is singled out due China’s pressure. Sure, there is pressure from China government to Emirates or maybe UAE. Sure, Emirates wouldn’t want to lose Chinese market.

@doublejade, your ranting sounds pretty clueless. EK’s Standards and Development Manager’s internal email clearly mentioned “We have been instructed by the Chinese Government that with immediate effect”. If the instruction from Chinese government were not true, EK should have clarified it. But instead, EK used a lousy excuse saying ” This email was sent in error and has since been retracted. The intent is to recall the flag pins worn by all our cabin crew was part of our uniform update.”.

How could such intent result in the original email? And how on earth this excuse proved the instruction from Chinese government was untrue? If Chinese government didn’t interfere at all, how would the manager even mentioned that? The excuse at most simply implied the manager should not have sent out that email to stir the controversy.

Unless somehow you find out their manager was actually lying or his/her account was hacked to send a fake email, it’s very logical to assume Chinese government interference on EK’s business is real. Even if the manager sent out that email by accident, that does not change the fact revealed in the mail.

So to me, Lucky drew his judgement based on what presented there. How did it make him close minded? NOW I'M RESEARCHING MR.
