what films or tv shows that you've watched for jean are your faves and why?
a tough question! most things I've watched for her so far have been things I already watched and loved (frasier, the kid, samantha who, legion) so I feel like those have to be excluded/in a separate category.
of the new things, I think watchmen was the best as an overall show (and jean was an AMAZING laurie!! even if I have some disappointment with how they dropped the ball writing her). I also really liked both high society and style & substance and wish both had more episodes. forever fabulous might be the highlight though, because it was so exactly what I love to watch for an actress lol - good premise, middling quality, crazy moments, hot scenes/looks, and singing!

Hi! First of all, congrats on your Hacks fanfic – I loved it and can’t wait for the next part! The same goes for your gifsets too, they’re so much fun and you catch so many parallels and callbacks, they make me want to rewatch the show over and over again ;)
Given your great understanding of the characters, I have a question that’s been bugging me since the finale (only if you feel like answering, of course ;) ). Do you think Ava and Deb have actually discussed anything real prior to Singapore and during those 8 months, after the fallout of 4.09 and Deborah’s sacrifice? Or was it more of a totally wasted period, communication-wise, spent on this never-ending, empty holiday?
I’m really curious how the show will approach it in S5, since I have the feeling they haven’t really talked on screen with each other all that much this season (the beach scene comes to mind most of all), aside from everything else that kept happening. Do you have any take on that and what might unfold?
I completely trust the writers, but I do wonder how this will go on, given that so much still feels left unsaid – at least on screen from what we’ve seen.
Thanks and have a great day!
What lovely compliments, thank you so much!! 🥰
A very good question! Personally, I think it was mostly discussion-less. Deborah is virtually never the one to open the door on introspection even when she's at her most comfortable, and that was absolutely not the case in the finale. And even though Ava regularly pushes Deborah, and they were together for SUCH a long time, I think this was a rare situation where Ava didn't truly push for Deborah to open up. And I think that's because Ava herself was struggling with Deborah's decision - I think she was carrying a lot of guilt (as suggested by her talk with Jimmy), and for once, she didn't feel like she was approaching Deborah from the moral high ground. I also think that at the start of the trip, Ava is just as aware as Deborah how tenuous their connection is - just because Ava is comfortable with their relationship existing without work (and I really do feel like she's 100% settled with her feelings for Deborah/acceptance that Deborah is the most important person to her), she's perfectly aware that Deborah is not. And since Deborah had JUST pushed Ava away to be on her own for weeks before the trip, I think Ava was unusually skittish about opening a door for Deborah to do so in the earliest days in Singapore. (And also, Ava was absolutely down to make any situation work, including Deborah's ridiculous plan.) And then, I think they got ~comfortable, and the longer Ava went without confronting Deborah, the harder it got.
Now, that all being said, I think Ava did broach the topic of Deborah's drinking/denial prior to the boat scene. I don't think there is any situation where Ava wouldn't genuinely try to help Deborah before giving up and going home. I think the boat scene was probably the dozenth or so time that Ava tried to get Deborah to listen. I just think that it was the one included in the episode because it was when Ava had finally accepted that Deborah was not going to/was not yet able to listen to her. So, I think from Deborah's perspective, their entire trip was conversationless. From Ava's perspective, they had a bunch of important talks that Deborah just was not really a part of, if that makes sense.
I agree with you, they really did have minimal conversations on screen the entire season! And I do think we have things that are unsaid and are important left to address. (I also have had it low-key in the back of my mind that it was unsettling that they chose to play "Cursed" over the end credits immediately following the beach scene in Mrs. Table. On the one hand, yes, it's just an appropriate song for them! On the other, it makes me itch that, after their most ~connected/open moment of the season (at least to date at that point) we got that song!)
I'm a little mixed on what I'm expecting them to address in season 5. On the one hand, there are definitely conversations I want to see. On the other, I also trust these writers and really don't want to put many expectations on S5, because I think I'll enjoy what they offer me far more if I don't speculate too much. (Which is hilarious to say while currently writing post-S4 speculative fic! 😂)
So, keeping my wish list short, the things I do want to see them address that I think are the most likely: 1) Deborah's habit of making choices for Ava - this feels like it was set up with the tail end of S4, when Deborah tells Ava they're leaving and Ava points out she was already packed to go, and 2) Deborah finally accepting that Ava wants to be around her without work - I really feel like Ava's email comment that no one would be around Deborah if they weren't in her employ needs to be addressed. It's been brought up way too often, and I think it's a fundamental aspect of Deborah that she sees herself as her professional persona; for Deborah to find true peace, I think she needs to address her issues with that conflation, and Ava is such a huge part of, and key to, that resolution.

Ao3 does not need an algorithm, you're just lazy
Ao3 does not need a 1-5 star rating system, you just want to bring down authors writing for FREE
Ao3 does not need automatic censorship, it is an archive, therefore anything can be posted
Writing or reading about something illegal does not mean the author nor the reader condones it, if that were true, you could never read a story involving anything negative
Purity culture is ruining fan culture and you all are fucking annoying
