"I should've seen the signs" I feel like Stoick was basically reliving the way he lost Valka.

To him, after a lifetime of wanting nothing but to kill a dragon, Hiccup's suddenly and inexplicably changed his mind. To him, Hiccup saying he can't kill them is just like when Valka refused to and tried convincing others as well, then as a result was 'killed' by one herself.

To him, way Hiccup tossed his weapon and shield to the side then approached Hookfang while speaking about how dragons aren't what people think they are probably bares an uncomfortable resemblance to the way Valka put down her weapon and stared a dragon in the eyes and as a result was taken.

To him, attempting to do anything but preemptively defend yourself against a dragon will only end in tragedy, so he has to do anything he can to stop Hiccup before it's too late.

(And just like with Valka, he unintentionally escalated the situation by trying to protect Hiccup but only agitated the dragon, causing it to panic and react, inadvertently putting someone he loves in danger. again)

Stoick of course, wasn't acting rationally, but it makes sense when you think about how traumatizing Valka's 'death' must've been for him (and how much Hiccup reminss him of her); he watched her get taken, presumably killed, and couldn't do anything about it.

For me it was such a delightful to see Hiccstrid as Parents. You can see how they Look at their children, how much they Love them, Even in the Epilouge of Httyd3 were we see Them for a Short Time and in Homecoming & Snoggeltog Log. Like the whole Trilogy itself, this cute Little Family brings Me so much joy.

The discussion on whether Stoick was a good father does not hinge on the scene where he found out about Toothless. It doesn’t excuse his behavior or that he said, “You are not my son,” to Hiccup, it does not mean it’s irrelevant, but we are not looking at normal circumstances of his parenting. It is not intended to depict normal circumstances. 

It is intending to depict what happens in such extreme circumstances that few, if any people, would ever react “blamelessly”.

This is a leader finding out his son sided with their enemy in war, the enemy that’s killed best friends and aunts and cousins and little kids and old men and women and fierce warriors for decades. If you found out someone sided with the murderer of your wife or put your entire friends group in immediate, grave danger, would the first words out of your mouth be patient? What’s the likelihood you would say something really mean or harsh? What’s the probability you would blow up and shoot something out of your mouth in high emotions before you half-realized what came out?

This is Stoick going through an extreme circumstance. Us acting in an extreme circumstance says something about our character, but it’s not the end-all. This is not reflective of Stoick in 99.99% of his life as a parent. This is not the prototypical, representative instance for deciding “What is Stoick like as a parent?”

headcannon that when ast was pregnant for zephyr hiccup was so excited and nervous that he hardly could sleep, so he just, talked with zephyr still in the belly. For hours and hours ab literally everything, like, how was his day, what he did as a chief that day or week, how he loved his wife, how he missed toothless, ideas for future projects, literally EVERYTHING and with details. and every time he talked to zeph he calmed down enough to fall in a completely peaceful sleep without even finishing his own sentences.

all while astrid was sleeping. and she never really had a chance to see the moment because she was always asleep, (i also headcannon that she was pretty sleepy during zeph's pregnancy) until one day she ended up waking during one conversation and found it just so freaking cute that she decided to pretend to be asleep to hear it, and i'm absolutely sure she just fell in love with him all again at the moment

Astrid isn't the best cook, Hiccup don't have time. Sure they could go to the Great Hall... but what if... what IF...

I can’t express how much I need this.

HTTYD highschool Au right? But! Toothless is the school Jock who one time in middle school was almost caught sneaking out of school but Hiccup (school nerd) saved him from getting caught. Toothless isn’t liked by Hiccup’s dad (idk make him the school coach or something) but both Hiccup and Toothless get along better than anything.

Astrid is the female Jock who is basically part of everything. Honor society? Yes. Debate team? Every Sunday afternoon, and so on etc.

Light Fury (we’ll call her Luna ig) Luna is the shy girl who doesn’t really go out much. She likes reading and animals but overall pretty average in everything else.

Toothless one day hears Hiccup talk about how nice it’d be to be in a relationship like his mom and dad. So Toothless is like “well, of course he should have a relationship like that! Hiccup is so great! Smart and creative! I’m gonna find him a girlfriend.” So Toothless picks who he thinks would be a great Partner for his nerdy but lovable friend, Luna. After all, who better for a nerdy lovable dork then someone who loves puzzles and stories? So he starts trying to trick Luna into being alone with Hiccup.

Hiccup sees Toothless’s notes that just have a bunch of girl names and labeled “perfect match” and thinks Toothless is looking for a girlfriend so Hiccup decides to help. Who does he pick for the sweet Jock he loves as a brother? Astrid. Who else would be good enough for the star Jock with a pure heart? So he (cautiously) becomes friends with Astrid and tries to set them up.

Meanwhile, Luna has no idea why the star Jock suddenly starts talking to her but she falls hard and fast. Toothless is sweet and she fell in love with the pictures and sweet words he drew for her. Not to mention the big warm hugs and dazzling smile.

Astrid has no idea why the nerdy guy that sits behind her in biology is trying to befriend her but when she sees him outwit (and saves her though she won’t admit it) Snotlout, who keeps hitting on her, she figures she can give him a chance. She’s thankful that she did because she quickly finds how interesting he is.

Bonus points if:

Toothless thinks Astrid is bullying Hiccup at first.

Astrid gets paired with Toothless for a class assignment and Luna gets paired with Hiccup, both girls get jealous because “how could they not fall instantly in love with Hiccup/Toothless”

Toothless saves Hiccup from something and Hiccup saves Toothless from something

Hiccup still only has one leg

The contiontion to the First Hiccstrid married Couple Story i did.

The freshly fallen snow shimmers silvery in the light of the full moon on New Berk. Zephyr and Nuffink take advantage of this opportunity to have a snowball fight. The two children scream happily in their wild chase around their parents' house. Hiccup was throwing some logs into the fire when his wife stepped out the door, a white fur coat wrapped around her shoulders. In her hands she held a tray with sandwiches and a single salad plate filled mainly with cucumbers. His eyes slid over her beautiful appearance, the long blonde hair that fell in soft waves over her shoulders like a golden veil. Her unfathomable ocean blue eyes glowing in the glow of the flames. Right down to the little bulge in her stomach where a little baby was growing inside her. Smiling, he stood up and took the tray from his wife's hands. “May I?” Astrid rolled her eyes with a smile. "Hiccup, I'm not seriously ill, I‘m just pregnant." In response, he just gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before placing the tray on a small wooden table in front of the fireplace. “I know, Astrid. But still."The two sat down by the fire and then watched their children playing happily in the snow. "Ready to tell them the news?" Astrid nodded, then called out, "Zephyr! Nuffink! Please, both of you, come here!” The siblings immediately came running and quickly climbed onto the bench next to their parents, where they immediately cuddled up to the two of them. Astrid lovingly ran her fingers through her little daughter's hair, and Zephyr giggled under the touch of her mother's gentle fingers. "We'd like to tell you something," Astrid began, giving Hiccup a quick smile as he sat Nuffink on his lap. “And it is very important to us that you listen carefully,” he continued. The two children nodded in joyful anticipation. Hiccup placed his hand on his wife's thigh and looked at her invitingly. Astrid ran her hand over her stomach. “So dear ones, you will soon have a little sibling,” she announced. Zephyr and Nuffink exchanged a quick look. Astrid bit her bottom lip, a quick glance with her husband was enough to see that he was thinking the same thing. Had her children taken it the wrong way? Did they think they would love them less now? But Hiccup and Astrid could hardly think any further when their two children happily jumped up and hugged them. “This is the best Snoggeltog present ever,” Zephyr exclaimed, wrapping her arms over her mother’s stomach. "And don't worry mommy, I'll take good care of you and the baby," Nuffink announced proudly, fiddling clumsily with his toy sword. Hiccup stroked his son's shaggy hair. “And I will take good care of you all. A Chief protects his family.”His gaze slid from his pregnant wife to his two children, who were carefully stroking their mother's stomach. At this moment he couldn't be happier. A smile appeared on his face. “Then let’s eat to celebrate the day.” Astrid and the children didn’t need to be told twice.

After dinner the children decided to build a Dragon out of snow. Astrid was leaning on her husband's shoulder and watching her children. Hiccup's hand slowly stroked her shoulder. Lost in thought, he watched as it started to snow again. Small white flakes trickled down in the glow of the northern lights and glittered in the glow of the colorful natural spectacle. Astrid noticed his look and stroked his chest so that his eyes fell on her again. “Is everything okay?” He sighed heavily. “No, it’s not Astrid. I'm looking forward to the baby but...I'm scared...for you and the baby." "You're afraid it'll be like when Nuffink was born?" He nodded. “I almost lost you back then. I don’t want to lose you this time.” He took both of her hands in his. "Astrid, I can't imagine a world without you." She ran her hand over his cheek. “I can’t imagine a world without you either. But I promise you, everything will be okay. You will not lose me. Never!” With these words, Hiccup wrapped his arms around his wife’s body and hugged her tightly and then gave her a kiss on her temple. “I love you, Astrid. I love you."

Favorite Fictional Families 6 (In No Particular Order)

The Haddocks

This is intended as a loose, not-that-serious “generalization,” but I feel like you can sorta tell the age of a httyd fan based on how they react to Stoick’s relationship to Hiccup in the first movie.

Other life factors aside, someone young is more likely to side with Hiccup and relate to the ways that Hiccup feels uncomfortable with his father’s disappointments and expectations. They’re more likely to call Stoick unfair, perhaps even go so far as to say he was abusive. 

Meanwhile, I feel like many adult fans understand and sympathize with Stoick. They understand the nuance and struggles of a parent trying to help your kid, steer them away from wrong and dangerous paths, appropriately call out and discipline bad behavior to protect them from worse consequences, puzzle over your kid’s seemingly contradictory claims, handle the weight of many stressors, and sometimes make mistakes, even big mistakes (it doesn’t make you a bad person, but, like every parent, imperfect).

I first saw HTTYD when I was in high school. I saw things from Hiccup’s view. Now I’m 30 and I see things from Stoick’s. I think that’s part of the magic of HTTYD - both father and son are relatably real, struggling through things an everyday father or son would. To say Stoick is an abusive parent is as inaccurately reductive as saying Hiccup is a menace. Stoick made a few poor and questionable remarks that hurt Hiccup, and Hiccup did wildly questionable, disobedient, reckless, and dangerous things that hurt or scared Stoick and the rest of the village. Both sides had blind spots for how the other felt that exacerbated the other’s stress. I love that HTTYD understands both sides made mistakes, both sides are intended well, and both sides struggle with miscommunications. 

I love that HTTYD didn’t reduce either Hiccup or Stoick in depicting a miscommunicating, on-the-opposite-side-of-the-coin, still-love-each-other family.
