So I JUST came back from watching the httyd live action, and I’m… very pleasantly surprised.

So… !! SPOILERS !!

Something I really liked was seeing the bond between the other riders and their dragons, because in the original movie we really only see them ride them, and then when we catch up with them in defenders/riders of Berk, the bonding has happened off screen.

And although it’s not a lot, a lot, in the live action, it’s more, because during the red death fight we see Astrid risking her own life to free Stormfly from the red death’s bite, and Fishlegs already affectionately calls Meatlug “girl”, and after the ask has settled, when everyone thinks Hiccup has died, Hookfang, Meatlug, Barf and Belch, pushes their way through the crowd to stand next to, and they nuzzle against their riders, and even in the ending scene, when hiccup has woken up and goes for a test fought with the new tail, we get a look at Ruffnut and Tuffnut rubbing lotion on Barf and Belch’s necks.

It’s a nice touch.

I’m weirdly obsessed with the post time skip scene at the end of httyd 3 where Hiccup is so effortlessly sailing and steering their ship. I want to see a mini series of Hiccup getting used to these things, of realizing that nothing will ever be as it was, and he has to learn what he would’ve already learned if they hadn’t made peace with and existed amongst the dragons, and remembering how things were before the peace.

Just how long it took to go anywhere by ship, how much patience it took to sometimes just catch a few fish, or to catch a bore, or herd sheep, or get to the top of the mountain.

It would’ve been depressing, just to deal with these things after having lived the life he, and they, did.

Hiccup: Astrid, please. We’ve in a lot of unexpected predicaments before and we always escape unhurt.

Astrid: ...

Hiccup: Okay, we sometimes escape unhurt.

Astrid: ...

Hiccup: Alright, we escaped unhurt once... Then we hurt ourselves on the way home.

Quietly losing my mind over Dagur saying that he hates traitors, only to eventually become a traitor himself. And thinking that that might’ve been the reason it was so hard to make that decision, because somehow, that was one of the few morals he had, and he went against it.

Would love to know what went through the heads of those that had read, and was fan of the httyd books before the first movie came out, and then saw the trailer and movie, deeply confused, but still pleasantly surprised.

“what do you mean Ruffnut is a teenager? Oh she’s funny.”

“Wait how old are the kids in this?”

“Wait, Hiccup and Snotlout are still cousins? RIGHT?! No?”

“Gobber is……… supportive? Mostly kind? Huh??????”

“Toothless is black, and big? AND SO CUTE.”

“This is NOT the plot of the books, but it’s SO good!”

“WHERE IS OLD WRINKLY?!?!”

“Terrible terrors huh? That design is…. Huh.”

And so on and so on, i literally can’t imagine these weren’t legit reactions for a lot.
