Top 40: Hagop Tchaparian — Bolts

Did you know Hot Chip named a song after this guy? (Or at least it seems so.) When I first saw this album mentioned somewhere my first thought was definitely “oh, like the Hot Chip song” before I found out, yeah, exactly like the song. That’s not why I like Bolts, though. It kind of has the same rough-hewn feel to it that Holden’s The Inheritors does, except it’s full of recordings of traditional Armenian/Turkish music and instruments Tchaparian made over the years, and also it feels both more compact and at times aggressive. Even the Holden reference is a bit of a stretch, I really don’t think I’ve heard anything else that sounds much like this.

Armenian British producer under Four Tet's label. 'Bolts was assembled from stray recordings Hagop Tchaparian collected over 15 years, from street musicians and wedding videos to small towns where his father’s family took refuge after being exiled from Musa Dagh, an ethnically Armenian region in present-day Turkey'. The album cover is of the Manhattan bridge looking into Brooklyn which I love.
