This issue bothers me a decent amount, so I’ll have to get this off my chest now.
People in the Hispanic/Latinx community love to devalue Haitians or boldly proclaim that we are not a part of the Latinx community.
This post isn’t to start arguments, because identity is and always will be fluid, but it is to educate those who don’t know.
In 1804, Haiti gained independence, making it the first free black nation in Latin America AND inspired rebellions across Latin America.
Where is Latin America? It is generally considered to be the Global South, where South America lies, and where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic. By this logic, both Haiti and the Dominican Republic (both on the island of Hispaniola), are Caribbean AND Latin countries.
Point of contention #1: Haiti can’t be Latin, they don’t speak Spanish.
This is a common argument, but easily dismantled. All Romance languages (French AND Spanish alike) are Latin based. If a country were to speak Spanish alone, it would be considered a Hispanic country (think Mexico or Colombia). But if a country’s only requirement to be Latin was to be Spanish-speaking, then Brazil, a large Latin country in South America that primarily speaks Portuguese, would no longer be a part of Latin America. The argument falls in on itself.
Point of contention #2: Haiti isn’t in Latin America!
This is basic geography. Look at the map.
Tumblr media
Point of contention #3: Haitian culture is more similar to Jamaica and other West Indian nations, not Latin culture!
Culture is constantly shifting. If you’ve ever listened to Haitian Kompa or Jazz, you’d find that it’s similar to Dominican Bachata— the guitar, drums, and vocals are similar, with the main identifier of difference being the language. Nonetheless, I provided an example of a classic Dominican Bachata song and Haitian Kompa. Although there will be other Caribbean influences, it isn’t likely that Haitians will be bumping out to Reggae in the street. If so, it likely isn’t our own.

Point of contention #4: The food isn’t Latin-based!
Laughable. We eat plantains, fried pork, rice, beans, chicken, and goat like everyone else. Naturally, other Caribbean nations like Jamaica do as well, but they also have staples like curry goat and roti, which is delicious but not easily found in Latin nations. Our dishes overlap very often, but are still distinct in flavor. Try to spot the difference between Haiti and the rest of Latin America’s foods. I’ll wait.
Tumblr media
At this point, I’m not trying to act as a « pick me » for Latin countries everywhere. Identities are fluid. You can be Caribbean, Latin, and black all at the same time. The division between these categories are the source of violence and ignorance to one another’s struggles. I’m here to educate those who want to learn, and to ignore the ignorant. Know that the complicity in antiblackness is deep within Latinx culture, and quit trying to deny it. Ask yourself why you want to distance yourself from your black neighbors, and why your family raised you hating curly hair and dark skin. Recognition of our flaws as a community is the first step to transforming our relations to others. Point blank period, mwen fini ak bagay sa.

It's January 1st, 🇭🇹 Haitian Independence Day. 🇫🇷 France had ruled the colony of Saint-Domingue as part of its worldwide empire since 1659. However, in 1791, a group of enslaved persons, inspired by the 🇺🇸 American and 🇫🇷 French Revolutions, began an epic struggle for freedom that culminated in victory and a declaration of independence on this day in 1804. The declaration proclaimed that the new republic would forever after be known by the same name it was known as before the Europeans had arrived – "Haiti," which means "High Land" in the 🛶 Native American Taino language.
The Haitian Revolution is Haiti's defining moment. It was the largest slave uprising since 🇬🇷 Spartacus' unsuccessful revolt against the 🇮🇹 Romans in 72 BCE. Haiti's victory came as a total surprise and shock to the rest of the world and inspired countless other revolts throughout the Western Hemisphere. It also paved the way for the termination of the transatlantic slave trade. As for Napoleon Bonaparte, the defeat was the nail in the coffin of his ambitions for a New World French Empire. He had sold the Louisiana Purchase to the US the previous year in part to pay for a victory in Saint-Domingue. That was not to be. Haiti became the first independent state in Latin America and the first in the New World to be led by a person of color.
The defeat of France put an end to Haiti's military fight for freedom, but not its political fight. The US and most European nations, including France, didn't immediately recognize Haiti's independence. France didn't officially do so until 1825. The US didn't do so until 1862. They don't matter, though. All that matters is Haiti. The Haitians recognized their own independence on this day in 1804 and have continued to do so every day since. ☮️Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet
