Excerpt from this story from The Revelator:
How do you get people to care about something they can’t see?
That has always presented a challenge in environmental conservation messaging, where a consumer’s decisions can affect people or species on the other side of the planet. It can be hard to connect the dots between a candy bar containing palm oil sold in Indiana to the destruction of an orangutan’s habitat in Indonesia, or how purchasing a cheeseburger in Nebraska contributes to deforestation of the Amazon.
While advocates have had some notable successes communicating these threats, promoting similar efforts to protect ocean life has proven even harder — even for communities that live right next to those waters.
Two of the biggest threats to marine biodiversity come from unsustainable overfishing and habitat loss — both of which also threaten the food security and livelihoods of coastal communities.
To fight these threats, governments have increasingly turned to creating marine protected areas (MPAs), essentially underwater national parks that protect habitats and organisms that live within them.
What can we do to build local support for MPAs and enhance their success? Wootton and her colleagues tried using an innovative collection of virtual and visual tools to persuade people of the benefits of an MPA. It focused on beloved marine species that would be protected by an MPA network, which the researchers called the “Fab Five.”
Wootton and a team of marine scientists, in partnership with First Nations Sea Country peoples, wanted to assess what gets community members to care about the ocean and support an MPA. Working in South Australia, which has 26 commonwealth or state marine parks, they picked five iconic local species who benefit from the MPA, including the Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea), giant Australian cuttlefish (Sepia apama), white-bellied sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster), great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), and southern right whale (Eubalaena australis).

top 5 birds of prey?
BIRDS. love birds. unfortunately I know VERY little about birds compared to snakes :(
I have absolutely no bias for a specific type of bird of prey. I don't know what you're talking about what I never have
5: white-bellied sea eagle (haliaeetus leucogaster)
I will be honest, I know very little about it so I have no room to speak. HOWEVER. it has a very special place in my heart because it was compared to me.
my beloved bird now
4: himalayan vulture (himalayan griffon vulture/ gyps himalayensis)
BIG. huge. big wingspan. I fucking ADORE these things they look.. soft.. but also I've never seen a vulture that looks so wise. it almost seems regal.
also, THE NICKNAME?? GRIFFON VULTURE?? THATS INCREDIBLE
3: egyptian vulture (neophron percnopterus)
Just. incredible in so many ways. I worry for them (endangered? i think). but. look at them
yellow.. they remind me of seagulls for some reason. they have that same stare. but I. holding them. holding them. also their history in ancient egyptian belief is?? fascinating?? like. God. also I can't not love smth called pharoah's chicken
2: loggerhead shrike (lanius ludovicianus)
Does this count? I don't think it counts but I'm putting it because this is the most hardcore little bastard ever. I love shrikes. they impale prey on branches or barbed wire to eat them. THEY ARE CALLED THE BUTCHERBIRD. THEYRE RAPTORS AND PREDATORS AND YET? THEY LOOK LIKE THIS?
incredible thing
1: bearded vulture (gypaetus barbatus)
These are so important to me. you don't understand. like I've made these things a part of my identity. They're so fucking cool and so interesting and one of the most metal vultures I've ever heard of. they were the originator of my interest in vultures ans my interest in bone-collecting and taxidermy. I owe a large part of my identity to them and they're just Sick As Fuck in general. love you, lammergeier

Sweet memories of living by the sea...
"The wild southerly has blown the rain away... for now... and everything looks so crisp and clear... eagles soaring, white horses in the sea racing, and even though the sun is still strong, there is definitely the hint of Autumn in the air... I love it when the trees are dancing..."

WHITE BELLIED SEA EAGLE
Haliaeetus leucogaster
©Laura Quick
The white-bellied sea eagle is a large diurnal bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. A resident through Southeast Asia to Australia on coasts and major waterways, the white-bellied sea eagle breeds and hunts near water, and fish form around half of its diet. Opportunistic, it consumes carrion and a wide variety of animals. Although rated as Least Concern globally, it has declined in parts of southeast Asia such as Thailand, and southeastern Australia.
The white-bellied sea eagle is generally territorial; some birds form permanent pairs that inhabit territories throughout the year, while others are nomadic. The species is monogamous, with pairs remaining together until one bird dies, after which the surviving bird quickly seeks a new mate. This can lead to some nest sites being continuously occupied for many years (one site in Mallacoota was occupied for over fifty years).

April 3, 2018 - White-bellied Sea-eagle, Australian White-bellied Sea Eagle, White-bellied Fish-eagle, White-breasted Fish-hawk, or White-breasted Sea-eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster)
These large eagles are found in parts of South and Southeast Asia, southern China, New Guinea, and Australia. They eat a variety of aquatic animals, including fish, sea snakes, water birds, and turtles, along with some land mammals and carrion. Monogamous pairs stay together for life, often reusing the same nest for many years. They usually build the large stick nests in trees near water, lining them with leaves, grasses, and seaweed. Females do most of the incubation and both parents feed the chicks.

Sooo I had to change Hali’s name. Turned out I misread it, and Haliaeetus is the genus name. Considering Haliaetus is the species name of another raptor this would be confusing. SO Hali’s name is now Leucogaster, the ACTUAL species name for the white-bellied sea eagle
