I love reading zoology research articles so much - yeah often there will be a ridiculous amount of academic language and scientists should be pushing to make knowledge more widely accessible but there's something about it all that is just unintentionally comedic. Like the formality of it all and the funding required and the number of scientists being like yeah this is my life's work and it is incredibly significant and then they'll show you the animal and it's just-

The Hammer-Headed Bat

Scientific Name: Hypsignathus monstrosus

Region: A region of western central Africa

Size: About a 3'4" (~1.0m) wingspan

Interesting Notes: The males of this unique fruit bat species, the largest of continental Africa, have a large resonating chamber in their snout used in producing loud honking noises to attract potential mates. Females of the species look more like other fruit bat species, and weigh roughly half their male counterparts' weight.

Had to settle for a cruddy photo because this doesn’t fit under my scanner, but I’ll make a proper scan when I have the chance :)

A hammer-headed bat and some grotesques (possibly gargoyles but I can not see if there are spouts.)

The hammer-headed bat is native to Africa and the grostesques featured are generally quite old - which would have made it unlikely that the Europeans who created and carved these figures had ever seen this animal in the flesh.

Makes one wonder about Jungian archetypes; the potential for anchestrally shared, almost cellularly dormant 'memories' that underscore and generate a sense of apprehension or even fear when we meet animals or others that deviate from our individual experiences.

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

A big nose just means more to love- especially when you’re a hammer headed bat. The males’ large noses act as resonating chambers, amplifying vocalizations during the mating season. In order to make sure their voices are heard, males also have vocal chords three times the size of the female.
