Volunteer Transcribing or Tagging for the National Archives

Through this article from Smithsonian Magazine, I learned that the National Archives is looking for volunteers² who can assist in transcribing² and tagging⁹ᶜ numerous old documents. Specifically, they'd like help with Revolutionary War Pension Files.

While this may not seem genealogy-related on the surface, helping to make these old documents legible can help scores of genealogists and historians find the information they're looking for. This is no less than what they've done for me so I could locate all the documentation I have now.

Though it would be marvelous to be compensated for our time and skillsets, I hope some fellow family historians will join me in volunteering to help if you're adept at making out 18th to 19th-century handscripts. The Citizen Archivist Dashboard even has this handy page of resources to help you get started.

I think one of the key points is it being a narrow diameter. I must clench up when I'm writing, because my hand gets tired before I've gone two pages, usually, and not with the Staedtlers. So I borrowed Hyacinth's calipers and determined that Edward's paws are 40 mm across at rest and he's a good kitty the Staedtlers are 8 mm across, and the last pens I got are a vile 10-12, depending on the measurement point. I would not have thought 2 mm would make a difference. Maybe it's the tapered shape?

If I restrict myself to an 8-9 mm diameter that means I'm looking at a Diplomat Magnum or an IWI Handscript.

@wingedspirit Yeah with pencils I had to make a rule that I wasn't allowed the 0.5 mm lead even though I like it because my writing gets too small to read. Left to my own devices I will take the 0.5 mm and graph paper and be tempted to write two lines to the row on graph paper. Not to mention switching languages when it's more concise... So I should bear in mind that some things are Forbidden.

What do Extra Fine, Fine, Medium mean in millimeters?

O senior pen user! I have been a dedicate of pencils for years but finally found a pen I like (Staedtler triplus fineliner). How do I tell when to stop using the pen? It seems wasteful if ink still comes out, even if it's a pain/not fun to use anymore. And if I like these sharp points, small bodies - is there a refillable/fountain pen I should investigate?

If the pen's getting scratchy it's time for a new one. Scratchiness means the tip - AFAIK Triplus Fineliners are fibre-tipped - has worn down, or there's not enough ink coming out to properly lubricate the contact between tip and paper. Either way it's refill or (unless recyclable) landfill.

Check Goulet Pens and Jet Pens for refillable fountain pens with fine nibs.

It's possible to experiment without spending very much, for instance the Jinhao 993 Shark from Goulet is $3.95. I might get one of these for @dduane, because of Ed-related Reasons. :->

The Platinum Preppy from Jetpens is $7.00...

...and the Pilot Penmanship, also from Jetpens, is $10.00.

All are refillable using cartridges or (AFAIK) a convertor for bottled ink.

Personal opinion: in my experience Pilot nibs at the cheap end of the range have been consistently superior to how they might reasonably perform for the price. Maybe I've just been lucky, however DD's two Pilot Metropolitans continue the "better than paid for" trend.

I'm pretty sure both Jet and Goulet could refine the search even further if you emailed them with a query like "What (inexpensive) fountain pen writes as fine as a Staedtler Triplus Fineliner?", although my recommendations may already fit the bill. :->

I've bought stuff unavailable in Europe from both companies - those Pilot Metropolitans had stub and fine nibs, for instance; for some reason the Pilot MR equivalent over here is medium-only - and they were very prompt and friendly even though my orders were just small ones from a customer unlikely to be frequent.

DON'T REMOVE THE PLASTIC THING!

If your pen's plastic thing is like these pens' plastic things - and from your photo I'm sure it is - it's the feed, a vital part of the nib unit which feeds (surprise!) ink from the cartridge to the nib point.

Removing it will break your pen.

So, your pen won't write. Have you tried turning it off...

No, thinking of something else. Let's be just as obvious.

You mentioned "where the cartridge connects". Have you put the ink cartridge in firmly enough to break its seal?

There's only a couple of millimetres between "sealed cartridge offered to socket" and "open cartridge engaged in socket", so if you're not used to loading a fountain pen, it's easy to think a apparently already tight-fitting cartridge doesn't need one last little push.

There's a tiny "pop" sensation or even a "click" sound as this happens, depending on whether the seal is a moulded plug or tiny plastic ball, after which the ink is able to flow from cartridge to nib to paper.

Here's a sealed Lamy cartridge, and the feed socket into which it plugs.

Open your own pen again and give the cartridge a little wiggle to see if it's tightly connected. You could even pull it out and see if it's open (L) or still closed (R).

If it IS open, and IS properly connected, try this:

(a) Run a trickle of cold water over the nib then blot it with kitchen paper or loo roll to encourage the capillary flow of ink.

(b) Wrap the entire nib securely in kitchen or TP and hold that securely in place while you give the entire pen a couple of shakes or flicks to encourage ink-flow by centrifugal force.

And, because this is how such things work, I'll bet that by the time I've written and posted this and you've read it, your pen (an IWI Handscript?) will be working just fine... :->

I have obtained a Neat Pen with which to find out whether I enjoy fountain pens!

It doesn't right.

Short investigation shows it's got a plastic thing in the nib that probably needs removed. How do I do that? It is flush with the nib and appears to make a full circle with the body below it, and I'm not confident enough to try needle nosed pliers on the front or the back side (push it through from where the cartridge connects? Then what will the cartridge connect to?) without advice from a devil.
