Life is full of endings and beginnings, and sometimes they feel the same. During a pandemic, I think we can feel more deeply; our emotions are heightened and our sense of loss is magnified. The truth is everyone is struggling in some way through this time, none of us are immune to that. In the struggle, let us not forget the precious humanity of others and the need we all have for Jesus. Things won’t always go the way we think they should. People will make decisions with which we don’t agree. We will struggle to understand each other. And through all that, perhaps more than ever, we need to care well for each other. We need to give each one the benefit of the doubt, looking for the best instead of the worst, working for understanding instead of dismissal. We need to fight for common ground, for hope, for a sacrificial love that puts the needs of others above our own. This season is a struggle, whether it is the end of one chapter or the beginning of another. Some days it can be really challenging to keep our focus on things above. It can help to remember that nothing shocks God or surprises Him. He knows what’s going on, and He is carrying us through it all. To keep our focus on Him is to worship Him, surrendering our lives—from our unseen thoughts to our words and actions—is to give God His rightful place in our lives. This week I spent some time studying Genesis 22, and though I was struck by multiple things (like the concept of not withholding anything from God), I love Abraham’s trust in God’s provision. When Isaac asks him where the lamb is for the burnt offering, even though Abraham knows he’s been commanded to sacrifice his son, he answers that God will provide the lamb. His faith is so certain that he obeys to the point of nearly sacrificing his only son, but God indeed does provide a ram. Are we willing to follow God with such certainty today? Do you believe that He will provide to the point of sacrificing all that you hold dear? This is a difficult concept, but I think if we completely trusted in God for provision we would see a shift in our mentality, from fear to peace, from self-reliance to expectancy. God moves in ways we may not understand, but He can be trusted.
