[image description: photos of The Disco Elysium Tarot, printed letterpress in an edition of one from handset lead type and linoleum blocks. It is a complete 78-card tarot deck printed primarily with white text and illustrations on medium grey cardstock, in a custom dark grey hardcase box with a hand-marbled orange and yellow endsheet. The backs of the deck are decorated with an illustration of a sprig of may bells, and a quote from Smallest Church in Saint-Saëns: "None of this matters at all." The interpretive meaning of each card is expressed on its face with a small excerpt of the game's text. The Minor Arcana are divided into four suits of Harry's Attributes—Motorics, Psyche, Physique, Intellect—and each card in that suit is a quote from a skill under that Attribute. The Major Arcana are assigned quotes from other sources like NPC dialogue or Thought Cabinet problems & solutions. Pips for the Minors are counted with diamonds like the game's skill points; each actor or title is printed with their in-game color, but made shiny & metallic with bronzing powder.
each piece of text was set in handset lead type, assembled from individual pieces for each letter and space, and printed relief on a chandler & price clamshell press. end description.]
🎊🎊 Desert Bus for Hope starts for 2023 on nov. 11th and i have made an item this year for the craftalong that will be up for giveaway between 6am-12pm on Monday the 13th! 🎊🎊 It is a full tarot deck based on Disco Elysium and it has several pieces of my heart & soul in it but NOT my blood because i put a bandaid right on that :) donations for this and any other auctions & giveaways for Desert Bus go to Child's Play Charity.
notes: i did not make a whole new interpretive model for this deck, apologies, that was outside of my scope. it's generally compatible with a Rider-Waite model, with Motorics for Wands, Psyche for Cups, Physique for Swords, and Intellect for Disks. (full distribution of text listed by card, linked below. any spelling or transcription errors you find there, i promise i fixed them in print—that's copied from my digital mockup which was copied hastily from screenshots.)
i also do not track hours on these kinds of projects because that way lies madness, but i will say: i knew how much time it would take to print it. it was a lot but i was not worried about it, i know how to print. i was very worried about how much time it would take to absorb the sheer amount of text, and distribute it across the cards, and really get an array i believe in. i was right to worry, and i have absolutely had a few anxious nightmares about discovering the Perfect excerpt that should've gone in and i missed it, and the suit of Intellect made me want to lay on the floor a few times, but still! i believe there's many versions of a deck you could make from this game and this one is a good one.
i think the Minors fit really well with the double-edged sword of Harry's skills, their advice, their priorities. the circular way the Fool-World assignment works out makes me smile every time. The colors on The Star came out so nice. i think Justice fulfills some of my favorite things about Kim's character & purpose in the story. i worried sometimes that editing to such short clips would lose too much of the politics of the game, but of course you can't really take them out and they're especially present in the Majors—the Devil and the Hierophant, The Star and The Sun. i've wanted to design a tarot deck for years and i love this game deeply and i let this idea percolate for a few months and it never stopped making me laugh so here it is, & given a beautiful purpose :)
i also literally could not have done this without xyrilin's Disco Reader and the FAYDE On-Air Playback Experiment to navigate the dialogue and skill checks. Really couldn’t have tied the whole concept & colophon in its final bow without the Disco Reader :)) thank thank thank, they're so fun to investigate that it was honestly very difficult to focus on my task instead of veering off and exploring every branch in an extremely disorganized way.
actual printing went well honestly, very few problems! i think that means i'm getting pretty good at planning one of these monstrosities, although perhaps it also means i'm not challenging myself enough. hmm. no that's silly there's 78 ding dang cards in this thing. anyway the drop & replace formes worked well, no registration issues. mum convinced me to overprint another half a deck's worth of cards when I was printing backs & borders and of course she was right :/ there were a handful of cards that actually had better line breaks and fewer lines total in true type than in the digital mockup, so i needed all the spares I had to put those new short quotes into the appropriate border breakage. next time i will not question her.
handset in Garamond, Eden Bold, and secret Neuland.
WIP : full text card assignments
bonus photo of the kind of trash notes i always take to plan things like how many borders were printed with space for short excerpts vs long excerpts, and how many of those are majors vs. minors, because they have a slightly different frame at the bottom edge, etc.

[image description: they are truly garbage notes, i tell you. half of it is written at angles to the other half, many numbers in the math problems are not labeled, mistakes are scribbled over. it gets me there but it doesn't look pretty. end description.]

Thinking about this aspect of the Wildmother, feral and hungry and hurting, gnashing teeth and anger, tethered to a dying world. Her absolute volatile hatred for Aeor and anguish and vengeance, lashing back out in this place where trees are uprooted and birds have no shelter and nothing real or living gets the chance to grow. How ready she was to let it all fall.
A thousand years later, in the last remnant of this city—one great big rotting cadaver—an empty husk. And then—mushrooms. Vines. Wildflowers. A patch of greenery blooming here in the heart of the place she so hated, allowed to grow and be reborn because she willed it, because Caduceus asked nicely for it, because she is willing to give some part of this place one last chance.
The Wildmother from a millennia ago surely would have despised the Nonagon, sought to destroy whatever vessel allowed these last ancient mages of Aeor to live on. But so much of the world has had time to heal and grow since then, to flourish once more into something new.
The same Wildmother who ached to strike down Aeor, allowing this lost little piece of a soul the chance to grow and try again. Divine intervention here in this place that the gods supposedly abandoned—

"Pond here.”
“Pond!” The voice of his boss’s boss came through the line. “I need you to come back and pick up Sonora’s cases.”
“Sir?”
“You know them best, I need you to work on them.”
“Why can’t Sonora work on them?” He was only just getting used to this place, and had made progress on the robberies. Not to mention the new friends he was making, like the one waiting for him in his room.
“Sonora’s in hospital.”
“Shit. What happened?”
“An unfortunate accident. But he had a string of open cases and no one here knows anything about them.”
Tumblr media
Pond scratched at the thick hair covering his chin. “But the robberies?”
“Fuck the robberies, Pond! Come straight to my office when you’re back in town.”
“I’ll make arrangements to leave as soon as possible,” Pond said but his boss had already disconnected.

[image description: 8 photos of a letterpress broadside printed from handset type and a linoleum block illustration. the poem is titled The Interview, written by a young poet for the 2024 edition of Words of Courage. the poet answers questions like what musical instrument, or animal, or color would you like to be. they would be an Afuche Cabasa, a tarantula, and the sound of a bird being eaten by a tarantula. printed from lead type, handset in Motto and Neuland; illustrated in pink, red, and blue is a tarantula playing the Afuche Cabasa. there are motion lines embossed out of the sheet for the shaking effect of the percussion. full text under the cut. end description.]
behold my abominable contribution to this year's Words of Courage publication 🎉🎉
WoC is a yearly publication of poetry broadsides written by patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and designed, printed, and bound into portfolios by local letterpress & book artists. this year’s whole edition will be scanned and posted there in a couple weeks & previous years are always there to see!
knew that i wanted this one immediately; this kid is SO cool and funny. personally i am deeply arachnophobic and have been doing some spider illustrations as exposure therapy. so far no discernible effect!! still very afraid of em. don't like to see em. research phase is a horror. but i am getting better at drawing them.
the Neuland for the sound effect was a no-brainer to me, plus i knew i would be varying the size and we have the original hand-cut stuff so each size of the face has little differences in the letter forms that you can spot. that little change in angle on the Cs, i love it so so much.
i didn't want to make the spider a cartoon. this reach for the skies pose is a real thing tarantulas do as a defensive back-off posture, so i was aiming for more of a posterized-from-photograph feel on the linocuts. reduction cut for the pink and red passes, separate block for the blue. the little bit of wobbly registration between the red and blue blocks helps the posterization feel, and some people also said it reminded them of riso, which i thought was very neat.
thought about printing the motion lines from rule as well, but it's a lot of text and i wanted it to stay very readable. so i made an embossing jig out of masking tape and hand-scored each of the lines into the edition instead. easy! well. simple anyway. 100 of em does strain the wrist so i only did a few at a time over a couple days. i finished a little ahead of schedule and this felt less…stressfully complicated than some other projects I've done so I kept looking at it and worrying that it wasn't actually finished?? when i'm not looking at it i still worry about that. but i'm, hmm, when i see it i'm really pretty sure i was correct to stop here.
The Interview    Q:        Rio, if you could be an animal, what animal would you like to be? A:        I’d be a tarantula. They make beautiful webs. Some tarantulas eat birds!   Q:        If you could be a color, what color appeals to you?
A:        I’d be red velvet like the red velvet cupcakes at Cupcake Royale. I’d also be aqua blue, the color of hospital masks.   Q:        What loud noise would you like to be if you could be one? A:        Definitely the sound of a bird screeching while being eaten by a tarantula.   Q:        Suppose you could be a musical instrument? A:        I’d love that! And I’d love to be a Latin Afuche Cabasa. It’s a stick with tiny metal spheres around it. When you rotate it in your hand it makes the sound Chichichichichichichichi.   Q:        Rio, can you imagine having wheels?  A:        I can! I’d be a buggy. I ride the hospital buggies every day when I’m here. They make me feel happy and fast! And wanting to go! Go!

Hello! Hope you’re well. I just wanted to drop in to compliment the hell out of you and your writing. keep with me forward is such an incredible character study and also sooo experiential/visceral. As someone from the Midwest, you captured the joyful melancholia of small town life so well.
I think about this fic so often and I have so many things I’d like to learn about it’s inner workings, but I wonder: how does Eddie think Steve feels? And/or what is Eddie hoping for as he and Steve’s endgame? It feels like he’s content to have Steve sleep on his couch forever and always, even though it hurts to have him so close, but do you think this version of Eddie would have ever told Steve plainly how he felt?
The Steve POV is perfect for capturing Eddie’s inner conflict, because Steve is SO perceptive! And Eddie can’t help but emote! Agh it’s so cool!! I can’t help but want to peek in Eddie’s brain!
Oh my gosh! Thank you so, so much for such a thoughtful and kind comment, I have the biggest grin pasted on my face. I’m delighted! And so, so delighted that you’ve enjoyed keep with me forward, that it’s been a happy or rewarding read for you. To have captured something that felt real for you is so meaningful to me!
I always hope to write things where you can feel that there’s a whole human being whose narrative of the situation we are simply not getting from our point of view character, and for Eddie, here, I think that is especially true. I think a rewrite of the story told from Eddie’s perspective would feel very different. I think he comes at emotions more hotly, is more reactive but more reserved in what he gives away about how he’s feeling, and is equally lost but in a sort of cheerfully disaffected, angry way. A sort of ‘exactly the same but in the opposite direction’ thing. We know what Steve is putting together about Eddie's take on it all. Eddie might not be quite so adept.
Because he knows Steve, ish, right, and he is seeing him, but Steve’s feelings and indecision and complexity can only pass through Eddie’s lens of feelings and indecision and complexity and can only mean what he knows them to mean. He sees Steve wanting to stay, but saying he won’t. He sees Steve looking like maybe he might begin to love him, and acting like he can’t. So in between the times on shift where he’s staring into space or being lightly micro aggressed but unpicking why it feels different to how it did before or reckoning with wow, okay, well, it’s a sort-bad life but not a kinda-bad day, maybe I like could almost like it here, he is treating Steve like what we know to be Steve’s messed up, grab bag jumble sale of emotions that are making it out apparent the soup of him crafting an identity are Steve’s actual, 100%, intended outputs.
I think he weighs up and comes to two potential conclusions; Steve is not happy here, and he’s not going to stay, or, the worse one, he’s happy here, but he’s still not going to stay. Because Eddie can only look at what Steve is giving him, and how he feels himself, about himself. He doesn’t see him as Steve does. So when Steve says, ‘I have to leave,’ Eddie is unsurprised and mad about it because, yeah, I fucking bet you are, and when Steve then counters with, ‘I love you,’ that makes it worse. Because it means that even Eddie’s good things, even someone who likes him, can’t like him enough. It simply doesn’t occur to Eddie that Steve doesn’t seem himself the way Eddie sees him, and therein lies the problem, both ways.
I don’t think KWMF is about ‘realising you’re good and consequently that other people can love you’, I think it is about ‘realising you’re good’ and ‘letting other people love you’, separately. So I think you’re absolutely right; Eddie would have let Steve sleep on his ugly reclining Goodwill couch forever, even if he knew that Steve loved him, because he doesn’t strike me as the sort of person who thought that that part was the stumbling block.

What Is More Beneficial – On-Premises VoIP Or Hosted VoIP?
All the strategies related to maximising the investment in business communication will be successful only when you decide whether to manage your own VoIP system or allow a host to do this on your behalf. Businesses across the globe have realised the advantages of VoIP technology and VoIP phone handsets. Now there is chaos among enterprises to switch to this technology, and more than 35% of businesses across the globe have already adopted it. The question is whether to host and manage your VoIP system on your own or rely upon a hosted VoIP, where a service provider does everything for you.
Tumblr media
On Premises Voip Vs Hosted Voip – What Is The Difference?
Both options will allow you to take advantage of the benefits of the VoIP phone systems. To get the most out of it, you will have to decide whether to self-host or enjoy the services of the hosted VoIP technology.
What Is A Premise-Based Voip?
In this arrangement, the whole system will be present at your office, like the equipment and the software needed to run the system will be there at your office. You will be responsible for its maintenance, security, upgrading and upkeep. This is easy if you have a well-established IT infrastructure and a dedicated team to manage the entire business communication scenario at your office.
Tumblr media
What Is Hosted Voip Technology?
A service provider will be hired and responsible for meeting all your VoIP-related requirements in this arrangement. This system is also called the cloud and is managed with the help of virtual servers that these hosting companies have.
What Are The Pros Of Premise-Based Voip Technology?
•          No risk of price hikes from the service provider
•          Complete control over your VoIP system and VoIP phone handsets
•          Customisation of the system’s features is completely in your hands
•          No additional cost of scalability
Cons of On-Premises Voip System
•          Higher installation and set-up cost
•          Long-term commitment to maintenance and security is required
•          You will need a dedicated staff for constant service, maintenance and support
•          Extensive investment and resources for proper management
Tumblr media
Advantages of Hosted Voip Systems
•          No stress related to maintenance, management and security
•          Incredibly low set-up cost
•          Fast implementation
•          Easily scalable depending on your needs
•          You can focus on your business and revenue generation
Disadvantages of Hosted Voip Technology
•          The system control is in the hands of the service provider
•          There is a vendor locking period
•          Network connection fluctuation will be experienced
Whether To Choose Hosted Or On-Premises Voip?
The answer to this question depends entirely on your organisation’s current capability, resources and funds. You can review your current circumstances and goals, and since every business is unique, it is ideal that the solutions tailored to fit your specific needs are selected.
